41 Incredible Man Cave Ideas That Will Make You Jealous

Featured Image: Sebring Design Build

A man cave is a personal sanctuary where you can indulge your hobbies and guilty pleasures with freedom. It provides personal space for much needed me-time especially if you have a big family and busy days, as well as a great selling point for potential buyers. The best thing about it is that you have complete control over the aesthetics. So however crazy or unique you want the design to be, you can have it all.

There are three important factors to consider when planning a man cave; location, style and furnishings.

Location

The location of your man cave will depend a lot on where you can get extra space in the house. In many cases, the basement makes a perfect location. When properly refurbished, it is cozy and well insulated from the racket of the kids above. If you have no basement in your home or if it is being used for another function, there are plenty of great garage man cave ideas too. You can also use an extra room, an unused bedroom, or a secluded area in the house. If you have limited space to use as a man cave, don’t worry, there are some creative man cave ideas for small rooms below.

Wherever you locate it, what is most important is the feeling of privacy and personal space.

Man Cave Room Ideas

This is the most important part of the man cave. Be as creative, as crazy, and as unique as you want. The most common starting point is to decide what theme you want dominating the room. This will depend on your hobbies and activities. Some create replicas of submarines or airplane cockpits. Some fill their man cave with film or music regalia. It all depends on your passions. The trick is to create a theme that feels right at home with you, one that makes your heart race a bit every time you step inside the man cave.

Make sure that everything from the wall color, to the style of furnishings, to the flooring are aligned with a specific theme. While we have numerous man cave room ideas below to get your creative juices flowing, you should also check out our home remodeling ideas.

Furnishings and Accessories

A man cave is a home within a home. As such, it must be well accessorized to become a livable space. Furniture such as a sofa and recliner are a must. Also consider putting in a fridge, microwave, drinks bar (if size allows) and bar stools.

If you are a sports or movie lover, make space for a large screen TV. A pool table, poker table, or dart board are also great additions especially if you plan on having guests over often.

Other accessories include sports memorabilia, wall art, and personally crafted items.

Man Cave Ideas At Home

When you like to get away from the stresses of contemporary life for a while, nothing beats a relaxing vacation to your man cave. These treasured areas allow us to slow down in a fast-paced environment and recharge our batteries for men. For many men with families, the man cave may be the only place in the house they can genuinely call their own. It is a location that is specifically designed for masculine energy and interests.

Our man caves are also personal sanctuaries where we may honor the various memories we’ve amassed throughout the years. It’s where we keep the things that are most important to us, such as our trophies, photographs, and even the baseball card collection we’ve had since we were kids. A man cave is similar to a closet. It is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your distinct style and individuality.

Man caves are, of course, great places to entertain. Home theaters, sports rooms with pool tables, and even indoor basketball courts are just a few of the ways that men use their man caves to unwind with friends after a long day at work.

Your man cave may become your ultimate at-home hideaway, whether it’s utilized to decompress after a long day at work, watch the big game, hang out with a group of friends, or get in a workout. Check out these ideas for establishing a man cave if you’re looking for ways to create your hangout at home!

Where To Put Man Cave Ideas

This is entirely up to you! Your ultimate man cave might be built in a variety of locations, depending on what you want to build and the available space in your home. These are only a few examples.

ttic Or Flex Room

Don’t know what to do with an attic or bonus room? Convert it into a man cave! Not only does this make use of previously unused space, but it can also provide your man cave extra privacy!

Basement

Basements offer privacy for your man cave! With a basement, you can have an entirely different décor and atmosphere from the rest of the house, allowing you to personalize it.

Garage

Because there is no carpet or furniture to worry about in this area of the house, a garage man cave can be a fantastic place for a home gym, workshop, or art studio where you can get a bit dirty!

Backyard Or Patio

The backyard is a wonderful place to barbeque, sit by the pool, play yard games, or simply enjoy the weather. If you enjoy spending time outside, a patio or deck could be the ideal location for your man cave!

Outbuilding Or Shed

Your man cave does not even have to be connected to the rest of the house! A detached building in the backyard can be converted into a man shed, ideal for loud activities like cheering at a game, using power tools, or playing instruments.

Extra Bedroom

Do you have an additional bedroom that you aren’t using? Underutilized spare bedrooms or other underutilized areas in the home are blank canvases begging to be transformed into a man cave!

What is Shiplap | 31 Ideas For Your Home

Kitchen Shiplap Options

Kitchen remodeling can get a little bit complicated when it comes to installing shiplap. For one, there are plenty of tight spaces and corners to work around including cabinets, outlets and other appliances. There are also issues of heat and water that must be considered.

For those who opt to go the DIY route, precision measurements are crucial in the kitchen. You might also want to think about a waterproof finish for shiplap that is likely to be in contact with water. Additionally, consider using tile for the backsplash as it is much better at repelling water and is easier to clean.

Like the living room, you can decide to use the shiplap on a specific part of the wall, making it the focal point. For example, you can use it on backside of the breakfast bar, the side where family members and guests sit. You can also install shiplap vertically in the spaces between upper cabinets.

Where Can You Use Shiplap?

Essentially, anywhere in your house.  From the bathroom, to the stairs, to the hallway; the options are endless. One of the advantages of shiplap siding is that it can be customized to fit any space, big or small. We have listed some great spaces you can use shiplap below.

Shiplap in Your Living Room

If your living room walls feel a bit lacking in warmth and style, shiplap is the perfect addition. You can choose to accent a single wall or install on all the walls in the room. Considering that this is the center of your home, it makes sense to make it as warm and cozy as possible.

Note that some areas such as the place around the fireplace may require another material (such as tiles or stone) that can withstand the heat and is easier to clean. While the traditional style is to lay out the planks or boards horizontally, you can decide to put them up vertically for a more unique style. You can leave the wood exposed with all its spots and pockmarks for a realistic cottage look. Bonus tip: exposed shiplap really goes well with exposed beams for a nice quaint look. Works great for a living room, home library, or home office.

To enhance its effect, you can finish shiplap with white paint. This looks especially good in homes with large windows where plenty of natural light streams in. It almost feels like you are sitting outside a farmhouse somewhere in the countryside.

Have you ever seen one of those cozy cottages in movies and wished you could live in one? Well, you would have to build your own cottage, but there is a cheaper and quicker way to create a similar effect in your home by using shiplap cladding. In recent years, there has been increased interest in shiplap-focused interior décor. Shiplap has appeared on HGTV shows, filled up interior décor blogs, and appeared in numerous magazine pages. In our latest home improvement guide, we take a look at Shiplap cladding, what it is and how you can use it in your home. It is one of those home improvement projects that should take you a single weekend and not too much money to complete.

What is Shiplap?

Shiplap is a type of wooden board traditionally used on the exterior of buildings. It is an effective and inexpensive way to clad a building and protect it against weather elements, especially water. Homeowners have recognized the beauty of shiplap and over time, it has found a place in the warm interiors of many homes.

When used inside, it creates a cottage-like, farmhouse or shabby chic effect. It is especially good at turning a dull and cold space into a warm, cozy and welcoming interior. You can use it to accent a specific part of a room such as the wall around the hearth, the space above the tub or the area above your bed. Alternatively, it can be used more extensively to panel entire rooms such as the bathroom, living area, or bedroom. There are numerous creative ways you can use shiplap in your home. We will go through them shortly.

If by the end of this guide you area leaning toward some shiplap for your own home, you have two installation options; you could DIY it or call in a professional. As a DIY project, it’s difficulty is moderate and you will need an extra hand or two to help. But if you are not sure, we always recommend letting a professional handle it.

Bedroom Shiplap Designs

Here the options are numerous. One common style that we see as a favorite for many homeowners is using shiplap to accent the wall behind the bed. By contrasting it with the other walls, it almost feels like a large headboard.

Related: 5 Reasons to Convert Your Basement Into a Bedroom For Your Teen.

A dull bedroom can be instantly transformed by installing shiplap all-round and painting them in a warm relaxing color. A unique style that can also be applied to shiplap in other rooms is to use more than one plank along a single row. The seams created where two planks join come together to create a stylish masonry effect.

Trendy Shiplap Bathroom Ideas

While shiplap tends to result in a countryside/cottage look in other spaces, it creates a trendy beach effect in the bathroom.

You could fill up the entire bathroom with shiplap paneling or use it on specific areas. For instance, shiplap installed just above the bathtub creates a cozy space to take a bath in. You can also install it on a single wall, above the cabinet area, and wherever else you see fit.

Because of moisture issues, it is highly recommended that you buy shiplap that has already been primed. This reduces moisture absorption by the boards ensuring that they last. It is also a good idea to skip shiplap in the shower, where running water can easily cause damage, although if chosen in that space, it is quite an amazing look.

Woman/Man Cave or She-Shed Shiplap Options

The versatility in style of shiplap allows you to choose a design that fits your man/woman cave theme. If you are going for the chic-look, watch for wood that has been aged distressed by wind and water.

Types of Shiplap

Traditionally, cheap wood such as pine was used in making shiplap boards. Today, homeowners have a range of material options to choose from. The most common is real wood, where your planks of wood are installed stack-style along the height of a wall. Real wood is especially ideal if you are planning to leave it exposed but it can also be a bit pricey.

Other less expensive options include plywood, MDF or hardboards. With these, you might have to apply a nice finish on top, such as painting, to create the full cottage effect. You can find these materials at most home stores including Home Depot.  Shiplap can also be categorized depending on their design. Some types of shiplap consist simply of planks of wood, MDF or plywood. Other types come with a design that allows them to fit snugly into each other. They are referred to as tongue and groove shiplap.

If you are doing a DIY installation, it is important that you understand the different types of shiplap and how installation varies among them.

Shiplap Wainscoting Works Everywhere

Instead of the traditional wood paneling for your wainscoting, why not try using shiplap? It creates a nice decorative effect, with unique detailing. Shiplap can work on all kinds of wainscoting from one that stretches to just a few inches above the crown molding to one that goes past half the wall height. Instead of the usual horizontal stack-style shiplap, you can also put the planks in a vertical design.

Shiplap in the Basement

One of the challenges of basement remodeling is turning it into an adequately warm and comfortable space. Shiplap is a perfect solution. If the basement is well insulated, you do not have to worry about moisture damaging the shiplap boards.

Whatever you decide to turn the basement into, whether a bedroom, family room, kitchenette, bar, or home cinema, shiplap makes for a perfect addition to the walls and ceiling or both.

Ceilings With Shiplap Installed

Shiplap is not just for the walls, you can also use it for the ceiling. Just as shiplap walls give a room the perception of more space, shiplap ceiling creates the feeling of more depth. For an even more spacey effect, extend the shiplap on the walls to the ceiling.

There are plenty of things you can do with ceiling shiplap. Painting it white spreads light around, enhancing the depth feeling. Leaving the shiplap exposed creates a spacious farmhouse style. Giving it an aged finish adds a vintage air to the home. A blue-painted shiplap ceiling brings a clear blue sky right into your home.

Of course the mechanics of installing shiplap on the ceiling are a bit different and can be more challenging than installing shiplap on the walls. If you are not sure of your handy skills, it is best to hire a professional.

.fusion-fullwidth.fusion-builder-row-112 { overflow:visible; }

Pros and Cons of Shiplap

Shiplap Advantages

One of the best things about shiplap is that it brings dramatic change without requiring a big investment in money and time. You can spend a single weekend putting up shiplap siding on a wall and less than $500 but the effect will be priceless. It changes the room drastically; producing a look that, using other methods, would have cost thousands of dollars.

Another advantage is the simple installation. Whether you are using plain planks, MDF, or tongue and groove shiplap, the installation process is fairly simple and straightforward. If you have someone to help you that has the right tools, you can do a quick and easy installation. There is no ripping out walls or messing around with utilities. Additionally, as many homeowners would agree, it is a pretty fun home improvement project to fill up your weekend.

Even if you opt to call a professional, the installation cost will not be too much. The décor benefits of shiplap are very worthwhile and with just several planks, a plain room transforms into a magazine-worthy space full of character. A cold bedroom suddenly overflows with warmth. A dull bathroom instantly feels like it has been built on a beach. A boring home office turns into a dreamy workspace that spurs your creativity.

Another advantage is its flexibility. It can be used in a wide range of applications both inside and outside the home. Just to mention a few that we have already shown above, it can be used for the ceiling, wainscoting, full wall paneling, creating a wall accents and so on.

Overall, shiplap is an efficient, highly effective, and inexpensive way to renovate your home.

Exterior Shiplap Cladding

While shiplap is better known for its use in interior décor, it was first used in exterior cladding. With a light finishing, you can also use shiplap on the outside of the house. In some climates you can include it in the porch, an outdoor sitting area, an outdoor kitchen, and exterior wall cladding.

Disadvantages of Shiplap

There are a few downsides and concerns we must make note of. One, shiplap in certain areas like the bathroom and kitchen are at a bigger risk of damage because of the moisture. Without proper finishing, the wood will start to warp or even rot.

Another problem arises when you need to repair damage to the shiplap or the wall underneath. Usually, it becomes necessary to remove a large chunk of the shiplap even for simple damage repair.

The world of interior design never stays still; new ideas and innovations keep coming. Shiplap is one of the best interior décor ideas you can use in your home. If not for any other reason, just the fact that it creates the exact style you want without draining your bank account.

To get the best out of shiplap our best advice is to be creative. There are many more ideas and ways to use shiplap at home than those we have highlighted above. Using this inspiration, find a design and style that is perfect for your home and go for it.

[Cleaning Tips] How to Clean 4 Types of Pillows

A high-quality pillow is a must for a good night’s sleep, but if the pillow is used for a long time, human secretions like sweat, saliva and grease could infiltrate and contaminate the pillow core, inducing the growth of mould. Therefore, regular cleaning of the pillow is very important. Pillow-cleaning is a hot topic on the internet, if you would like to know how to clean different types of pillows in different ways, let us share all of them with you here.

Interior Design: Happy Roof Interior

Four Common Pillow Types

Memory Foam Pillow(Space Cotton Pillow)Down PillowDurabilityAverageLongAdvantagesProvide good supportWill not deform easilyThe high degree of adherenceSoftWarmth-keepingPermeableWill not deform easilyDisadvantagesSlow heat dissipationNot washableThe hardness will change according to temperature and timeWeak supportNot washableNot suitable for people with respiratory allergies

Cleaning Methods

It is generally recommended that pillows be cleaned every three months to six months. While not all pillows can be washed and dried under the sun, so we must pay attention to the washing label of the pillow. If an unsuitable cleaning method is used, the life span of the pillow will be shortened, and it will be more likely to deform and lose its support. We will describe the correct cleaning method for the above four types of pillows.

Interior Design: Rezt n Relax Interior

Memory Foam Pillow (Space Cotton Pillow) Cleaning

Memory Foam cannot be cleaned with washing machines and dryers since the high temperatures will damage the tissues such as sponge and polyurethane and cause deformation. Therefore, we can only use a vacuum cleaner with a dust-mite removal function to remove dander and dust. In addition, memory foam pillows usually come with a washable protective cover, so we only need to clean that protective cover.

Latex Pillow Cleaning

Natural latex pillows are high-end pillows, which are generally more expensive, so we must handle them with care. It cannot be washed with washing machines and dryers since the latex will be torn if treated with force. On the other hand, washing with water will make the latex wet and even if the outer layer dries off, the numerous small holes in the inner layer may not be able to dry out completely. At the same time, high temperatures will also make the latex pillow brittle, so it should not be exposed to the sun.

Therefore, the cleaning method of the latex pillow is the same as that of the memory foam pillow, we only need to use a vacuum cleaner with the function of removing dust mites to absorb dander and dust, then place it in a cool place.

Down Pillow Cleaning

The advantage of down pillows is that they are soft and good at warmth-keeping since they are filled with animal hair. As it is animal fibre, we only need to expose it under the sun and air-dried in a position with good ventilation for sterilization and removing moisture and smell. Unlike down jackets, down pillows are not recommended to be washed in order to prevent the fluff from forming into balls due to water and losing the original shape of the pillow.

Polyester Pillow Cleaning

Polyester pillows are man-made fibres, very commonly used, relatively cheap and easy to clean. The gentle mode of the washing machines can be used to clean polyester pillows and they can be dried under the sun or in a clothes dryer. However, if you use a washing machine to clean and dry, please do not use long-term mode.

Tips for Machine-washing Pillows

Regardless of the type of pillow, if the laundry label states that your pillow can be machine washed, here are a few tips to keep in mind if you would like to extend the life span of your pillow:

Avoid using washing powder as if the washing powder does not dissolve, it will remain in the pillow, so it is better to use liquid detergent.Unlike laundry, pillow washing does not need to use softener as it will damage the bulkiness of the pillow.Consider washing two pillows at the same time to make the washing machine rotates more evenly.Pillows must be washed in a gentle mode since strong pulling and rotation may cause the pillow to deformIf you can use a clothes dryer to dry the pillows, the temperature should not be too high

63 Awesome Sliding Barn Door Ideas

The 50 Best Pictures of Barn Doors - Sebring Design Build

Featured Image Source: Natman.com via nj.com

Barn doors are not just for barns anymore. From the countryside barns, these wide sliding doors have entered the house to become popular interior décor pieces. From cozy bedrooms to rustic home offices and perfect room dividers, barn-style doors are all the rage for homeowners.

Why Sliding Barn Doors?

Barn doors come with both functional and aesthetic benefits. Functionally, they are big space savers. The traditional swinging door typically needs 9 feet or more of space to function properly. While this may not be an issue for large houses, more space-starved homes will find it more than a little problematic. They need all the space they can get for furniture, appliances and movement. Nine feet is a lot of space to leave to the door. French doors, as beautiful as they are, are even bigger space gobblers.

In a small space where every single inch counts, sliding barn doors come in handy. A well installed sliding barn door offers great space economy for whatever room you use it in. Of course, you need to have enough adjacent wall space for the barn door to slide over when it is opened. But this is often preferable to similarly space-saving pocket doors that require much more work to install or remove.

A small disadvantage with sliding barn doors is that they may not close as quietly as traditional doors. But a good contractor should be able to install it in such a way that noise is reduced to a minimum.

Other Sliding Barn Door Advantages

Another advantage of sliding barn doors is their support system. Sliding barn doors use a track for movement. The entire weight of the door is therefore distributed along the length of the track. This allows for the installation of heavier-than-usual doors without affecting stability of ease of movement. For places that need more security but are limited in space, a heavy sliding barn door would work just fine.

There is also, of course, the aesthetics side of the sliding barn door craze. Some sliding barn doors have this rustic outdoorsy feel that creates a stunning contrast when indoors. This contrast is especially enhanced if the door is styled in a worn, rustic design that makes it seem like it was taken right from the barn outside and installed inside.

Things To Consider Before Installing Sliding Barn Doors

Sliding barn doors are a big trend in interior design, owing primarily to the growing popularity of farmhouse-style homes. A sliding barn door is a door that can be installed anywhere in the house and typically consists of a wood or metal door hung on a sliding track. It glides to the side and hangs neatly against the wall, rather than opening and closing like a standard door. People adore them because they can easily change an area while also adding a lot of personality.

Timeless vs. trendy

Although sliding barn doors have been around for a long time, they have recently gained a “trendy” reputation. And, like with any trend, before buying in sliding barn doors, you should carefully analyze your motivation. There is a considerable difference between truly adoring a style and liking it because it is the fashionable thing to do at the time. Ask yourself, “Am I still going to adore these five years from now?” and “Will this house be worth anything when I sell it in a few years?” You’re good to go if you are able to see long-term potential.

Do you have sliding barn doors in your home?

Before doing any home improvement project, you must evaluate your home’s style. Traditional barn doors can complement a farmhouse, coastal, or traditional property. If you put them in a mid-century or modern home, they will seem completely out of place. There are also other styles of sliding barn doors available, each with a unique appearance. A more minimalist home, for example, might benefit from metal French-style sliding barn doors, but a modern home would benefit from a more streamlined metal.

Will you be able to have enough privacy?

This is a crucial aspect to think about when installing DIY barn doors: Privacy and sound. Sliding barn doors, unlike standard doors, do not block off the bulk of sound and noise. Remember that you will hear more sound through a sliding barn door than a standard swing door, because the edge isn’t as tightly sealed. In terms of privacy, you won’t be able to lock a sliding barn door in place, which could be inconvenient if you’re attempting to keep your family or roommates out!

Is the size of your door header proportionate?

Before beginning this DIY barn door project, keep in mind that a proportionate header is essential. A header is a substantial piece of wood that acts as an anchor for your barn door, distributing the weight and increasing stability. It also improves the aesthetic value. A proportionate header is critical for decorative hardware when decorating the opening. I feel that a simple block-finished edge with no additional ornamental trim is the easiest to execute, and it creates a clean, modern-cased opening for the barn door to be the major accent.

Is your hardware in sync?

Coordination of hardware on a barn door is more about function than appearance. Remember, the hardware and door must extend past the opening, so make sure you have enough space and position the hardware, so the door slides past the wall base. The door should be wider than the opening, with the hardware on the outside edge.

Final Thoughts:

Sliding barn doors can undoubtedly give a stylish touch to your property. Remember that if you do decide to install one, preparation is essential. If sliding barn doors aren’t for you, don’t worry!
