Make your island functional by making it a dining table.

Black Kitchen Island

Black is always stylish, and it almost never goes out of fashion. You can create a cool and calm space with a black island, as black invites depth and boldness to an otherwise neutral-toned space. Whether you have a black base with an alternatively-colored countertop or vice versa, you can rely on black islands to stay in style for years and years to come.

Black Kitchen Island with Seating

A black kitchen island is truly classy, and will always top the trending items charts. You can take your black island space one step further by adding available seating options. Having an espresso-colored island in your kitchen can not only invite a lot of positive conversation but a variety of bold and contrasting colors to your space as well. Plus, you’ll be able to enjoy looking at it while you drink your similarly-colored coffee in the morning!

Cherry Kitchen Island

Cherry is a popular and traditional color that can bring your kitchen back to simpler, more traditional times. This is a highly sought-after wood that invites a sense of fullness and robustness to your kitchen. It is great if you have additional wooden pieces in your kitchen, as it can help to bring the colors together.

Keep it simple and sleek with white cabinets and a granite top.

White Kitchen Island with a Granite Top

Nothing says classy like a combination of dark and light. A white kitchen island with a gorgeous and cool granite top can speak volumes about the value and sophistication of your kitchen. Adding some darkly-colored handles to the cabinets below can accent the island and pay tribute to the granite slab on top. This is a great way to combine elegance and tradition by contrasting colors, without having to be too vibrant in your classy kitchen.

This white kitchen with dark island is so elegant.

White Kitchen with a Dark Island

A great style choice for a transitional kitchen, white cabinetry with a dark island is a bold and tasteful addition to a kitchen of any size. This gives the illusion of an expanded space, with the cabinetry expanding the walls and opening up to invite plenty of room to move around. The dark island will be an inviting focal point, especially with some light fixtures situated above it. Your family will always gather around the island as the dark colors make it a natural space to stand around and enjoy the kitchen view.

White Kitchen with a Gray Island

If you are invested in your beautiful white cabinetry, you don’t necessarily have to have a white island to match. Adding a darker neutral tone such as gray can give depth where there previously was none at all. Plus, you can enjoy the sense of cool and calm that a gray space can give.

This open, airy kitchen features a great shiplap kitchen island–perfect for fun party conversations.  The metal range hood and metal pendant lights are great complements to this modern farmhouse kitchen.  Pretty wood floors too!

Beadboard Kitchen Island

Beadboard is a highly textured design featuring thin vertical panels that decorate the base of your island. This is typically a popular design for contemporary or beach-style homes, and it can add a lot of depth to your kitchen. If you feel your room is too solid and smooth, you can satisfy the need for texture by adding a black, white, or natural-toned beadboard kitchen island.

Shiplap Kitchen Island

Similar to beadboard, shiplap is traditionally a type of kitchen island made from pieces of wood reclaimed and stripped from old wooden structures. You can achieve a shiplap island in a variety of ways, but typically in a modern island, you will want to apply the strips vertically with a paneled border. You can use any color for your shiplap wood, with neutral or style-matching tones being the preference.

BEACH ISLAND

Again–a wonderful mix of gray, white and reclaimed wood.  Take a look at that backsplash–cool!

Distressed Kitchen Island

Distressed wood gives the appearance of a vintage, rustic piece. You can make your island look like a part of history by painting it in a distressed style. You can apply this style to the base, the top, or both, in order to bring some cottage charm to your home. The beauty of distressed wood is that it matches well with anything – you don’t have to worry about distressing the rest of your kitchen just to match it. It stands up well on its own!

Reclaimed Wood Kitchen Island

Reclaimed materials are highly sought after in the current market, and you can create a unique look by building an island out of reclaimed wood. While the prices of such materials may vary, it’s a great way to add a sense of character to your kitchen. It’s also a great way to marry the different colors and styles by adding a natural material that has so much value on its own.

Desirable Kitchen Island Decor Ideas & Color Schemes -_Sebring Design Build

Off-white colors and wood touches make for a classic kitchen.

Farmhouse Kitchen Island

If you love the utilitarian farmhouse vibe, you’ll love experimenting with a farmhouse kitchen island. Some examples of farmhouse islands are those built on wheels, so they act as portable carts that you can take with you while you prepare items around the kitchen.  Farmhouse islands look great with rustic colors, reclaimed wooden basis, or even restructured cabinets. Remember that farmers love to make the most out of a small space – so the more cabinets, the better!

Industrial Kitchen Island

An industrial island is one that not only incorporates the style but the functionality of an industrial piece as well. These islands are often made from repurposed metal, wood, and other sturdy products for a piece that looks like it can stand the test of time.

ngled Kitchen Island

What exactly is an angled kitchen island? This is an island that doesn’t fit the traditional rectangle shape, but instead adds something unique and dynamic to your otherwise geometrically-symmetrical kitchen. Many angled islands include pointed triangular shapes, or hexagonal shapes to accommodate many seats around it. Often, angled kitchen islands double as seating areas or even makeshift bars, where stoves or grills can be installed on top. It adds a creative seating space that doesn’t take away from the enjoyment of the entire kitchen.

Two-Level Kitchen Island

Take your island to the next level – literally! Having a kitchen island that works on two levels is a great way to add more function to your decorative space. A two-level kitchen island includes two countertops at two different levels. Often, the lower level can serve as a stool seating area, while the higher level can be installed with sinks or just used as a general workspace. Try incorporating granite or other natural tones to a two-level island to maximize the space and make the kitchen feel wide open.

Double Island Kitchen

If you have the space for it, then you may be able to benefit from a double kitchen island. This is largely sophisticated, and a great way to add double the amount of functionality to your dynamic space. A double island kitchen is one that is not only elegant, but busy. If you love to cook, and you have the space and the family size for it, this is an ideal option for you.

Desirable Kitchen Island Decor Ideas & Color Schemes -_Sebring Design Build

For elegance and sophistication, choose a gray kitchen island.

Gray Kitchen Island

Gray is a unique color that many homeowners love to play around with. While it comes in a variety of hues and tones, it always acts as a timeless incorporation to any kitchen, no matter how colorful or neutral. A dark gray island with a bright wooden top or a light gray island with a dark granite top adds a lot of character to the space.

Blue Kitchen Island

We take our first step away from natural and earthy tones and invite the idea of a blue kitchen island into the home. There are a variety of blue hues that can add deep levels of contrast and shifting attention throughout the space. Navy blue is one of the most popular choices, while lighter blue hues can match well with other white or pastel colors you may have decorated your kitchen with. This is a great way to make your island pop with color and stand out as a truly respectable piece.

Red Kitchen Island

While it’s important not to go too overboard with a bold primary color, there’s a lot that can be achieved with a little bit of red. Having bright red kitchen island cabinets can make the entire kitchen pop. You can add red accents here and there throughout the kitchen to add a vibrant and inviting look. Red will make your guests’ mouths water, and they’ll be more tempted to spend time in your cheerful and bold kitchen!

Kitchen Island Colors – The “Other” Colors

31 Wonderful Hallway Ideas to Revitalize Your Home

Featured Image: Dreamstime.com

Hallways. You probably don’t think much about yours. Often, they’re simply a windowless walkway. A straight line, to get from point A to point B. It’s not a place you generally linger, like your kitchen island or family room sofa. There’s no place to sit down. Nothing to look at. What if instead of a closed-off corridor, it was a gallery, a library or even an architectural highlight of your home? Hallways can do more than connect rooms, they can reflect you, the homeowner.

How they reflect you depends on the size of your hallways and your style, of course. You’re not going to squeeze a console table into a three-foot wide hallway, and you’re probably going to need more than a few 8×10 pictures if you have a long hallway that’s five feet wide. As with any design, you have to consider scale and function along with style. Here are just a few hallway decorating ideas.

Contemporary Hall

Just goes to show that anything can be a source of inspiration to perk up a hallway.  In this case, it’s the Beatles, but it can be any type of music, movies, etc.

Galleries,  Sculptures, Bookcases — Oh My!

The most obvious way to upgrade your hallway is to do a gallery wall–a curated collection of your favorite art pieces and/or photographs. You can display them in a modern grid style with matching frames, or a mishmash of frames and sizes for a more eclectic, thrown-together look. Consider highlighting your gallery wall with directional lighting to showcase your favorite artwork or cherished memory.

Prefer a cleaner look, but still want to add style? Custom millwork, creates an architectural feature out of a blank slate. Bare walls become artwork themselves. Creatively worked ceilings draw the eye up.

From the richly stained wood plank floors to the unusually peaked ceiling, this hallway is architectural artwork. The warm floors prevent the white walls from becoming too stark while the headboard and shiplap add textural interest to a mainly monochromatic color scheme. The beam-lined, peaked ceiling is the highlight of the design with a single pendant light accenting this dramatic hallway.

MEDITERRANEAN DREAM

Wonderful Hallway Ideas to Revitalize Your Home - Sebring Design Build

Fratantoni Luxury Estates

Everything in this hallway is exquisite–archways, stone, flooring, lighting, windows…

Flooring & Lighting

Don’t forget about what’s under your feet. The floor can be a great place to add pops of color and pattern. Wood planks can be shaped into a pattern different from traditional patterns in rooms. Intricately designed runners add warmth and style to the space.

You may be tempted to overlook lighting in the hallway. Most hallways have one, maybe two, standard ceiling lights. Maybe they’re flush mount, or recessed, but chances are they’re not very interesting. Small chandeliers can add drama to the ceiling. Spotlighting artwork adds interest and directs the eye across the walls. Sconces can also sculptural interest to otherwise bare walls. West Elm is great if you’re looking for modern lighting pieces – though try scouring through Pinterest first to get an idea of what you want.

Check out these highlights of hallway ideas. They are sure to inspire.

Pool Table Lights Specifications

There are a couple of features and specifications of pool table lights that should be reviewed before taking a look at the different styles available. You need to ensure that your fixtures will be secured, with just the right amount of light for your gaming pleasure.

The pool table lights’ height should typically be around 40” above the table, but no higher than 70”. Between 40” and 70” is a great range for the perfect amount of lighting, without being too bright or too dim.

The pool table lights’ length depends on the size and width of your table. You can decide which size lights to use by taking a look at the handy sizing chart table below. Remember that the same information applies whether you are using one or multiple lights in a row:

The available pool table sizes offer different lengths and depths, which can help to determine which style of lights you’d like to choose for your billiards room.

Cool Pool Table Lights

The scope of what is and isn’t cool can vary from person to person, and the interior design world is often redefining the meaning of cool itself.  However, there are several timeless pieces that will always be known as “cool”. Several ideas for cool table lights include those made from barn wood, different colored lamp shades, vintage colorations (such as green and pink), imprinted lamp shade designs, rubbed bronze, and much more.

Next, let’s take a look at some of the most popular lighting styles for your billiards table.

Stained Glass Pool Table Lights

Also known as “Tiffany” style, the stained glass pool table light can be a beautiful addition to your ceiling. These fixtures are often adorned with colorful decorations, almost in a mosaic-like pattern on the glass shade of the lights. They can be fixated to an iron bar, which attaches from the ceiling and hangs at exactly the right height.

This is a great choice for anyone who is looking to add a more antique feel to their home, further pulling together the golden oldie style of a classic games room.

Vintage Pool Table Lights

Vintage pool table lights can either be handmade or produced to mimic a vintage style. There are a wide variety of vintage styles available to choose from. Some popular favorites include lights made out of an upside-down feeding trough, with the rustic metal adding a genuine touch, and the refurbished industrial hanging light, which uses vintage materials salvaged from machines with an Edison light bulb for a vintage look. Several other styles are available that can be made from old pieces of furniture, salvaged wood, different metals, and even stained glass.

DOUBLE DOME

Rustic Pool Table Lights

Rustic pool table lights often come from old and natural materials. The term “rustic” itself refers to old metal which has slightly rusted over, giving it a genuine and well-used look. Many homeowners love inviting rustic styles into their houses, which can look especially neat when adorning a classic game room.

Rustic lights are often made from metal or wooden troughs, industrial materials, or pieces of furniture. They are not required to be vintage in order to be considered rustic.

Contemporary Pool Table Lights

Before delving into the details of a contemporary pool table light, it’s important to highlight the difference between contemporary and modern. People tend to confuse the two because there are certain similarities that can compare the two styles. However, contemporary is a style all of its own, with many features that are independent from that of a modern look.

Contemporary defines anything that is current and trending, while modern takes its cue from the past. There is a definitive modern style that will never change, whereas contemporary fits the times and preferences of the moment. With this being said, contemporary pool table lights are often boxy, square-shaped, and with several minimalistic devices. They add a great touch of modernity and a city-like feel to your room when you install them.

Custom Pool Table Lights

Aside from the huge variety of creative and classic pool table lights available on the market, you always have the option to make some custom designs that would fit perfectly with the personality of your room.

Do you like some stained glass designs, but you are also into modern and contemporary styles? If so, you can combine the two to make a custom fixture that nobody else in the world will ever have

The beauty of creating custom lights is that it’s easy to get creative and come up with a multitude of ideas that have yet to be produced. Looking back on some of the vintage designs, you can see how others used to fashion lights out of wooden troughs or barn tools. You can apply the same thought to your custom idea and let your imagination soar.

There are other ways to customize your lights, too; you can imprint the lamp shades with your favorite design or decal. Is your game room sports-themed? Want to show your loyalty for a specific team? Get their team name branded on your lights, so your guests will see them and smile when they enter the room.

Standard Pool Dimensions

Pool tables are available in many sizes. If you like to buy a pool table for your home, you should know the correct dimensions.

Pool tables are typically rectangular in shape, with a length-to-width ratio of 2:1. For example, if the table’s length is 8 feet, its width will be 4 feet.

The standard pool table measurements (length and width) are, in general, as follows:

7 feet (2.1 meters) length and 3.5 feet (1 meter) width

8 feet (2.4 meters) length and 4 feet (1.2 meters) width

8.5 feet (2.6 meters) length and 4.3 feet (1.3 meters) width

9 feet (2.7 meters) length and 4.5 feet (1.4 meters) width

A pool table’s typical height ranges from 29 1/4 inches (74.3 cm) to 33 inches (83.8 centimeters). This relates to a height range of 2.4 feet (0.74 meters) and 2.75 feet in feet and meters (0.8 meters).

Make Your Game Room Fun!

Pool & billiards are exciting and timeless activities that can be enjoyed with just one or multiple friends. Pool & billiard tables are beautiful and often expensive pieces that deserve to be taken care of and showcased with the right kind of light. When you are looking to install pool table lights above your table, you want to make sure you get it right.

After figuring out the proper height and length adjustments, you can then use your creative spark to figure out your style. From rustic to contemporary, there are plenty of shapes, styles, colors, and materials to choose from. You’re guaranteed to have something unique and beautiful every time.

21 Barrier Free Curbless Shower Ideas

Featured Image: HGTV

Have you seen curbless showers on websites and in magazines and dreamed of a new barrier free shower in your outdated master bath?  Is your current shower hard to clean and even harder to get in and out of? Or, perhaps you’ve been looking at doorless showers designs.  Maybe both have been at the top of your wish list for way too long now.

This might just be the information you need to nudge in the right direction toward getting that bathroom remodel done once and for all.  A great opportunity to start enjoying your bathroom again. It’s a fact that a new walk-in shower could be just the thing for really opening up your bathroom. And, that doesn’t mean just opening it up physically, but also visually as well. A new curbless shower could be responsible for providing that dramatic facelift that you’ve been wanting and it might not even require a complete change of your entire bathroom layout.

Curbless Shower Benefits

Curbless showers have become increasingly popular. Now you just have to ask yourself if a curbless shower could be the best option for you. First, consider the advantages to having a curbless shower of your own.

BARRIER FREE

Xstyles Bath + More, Inc.

A crisp and solid contemporary curbless shower design.  Lots of porcelain tile used in this space!

1. Functionality

This can affect everybody from children to grandparents. It’s a fact that health care costs keep skyrocketing right along with the general cost of living these days. That means that several generations find themselves having to live under the same roof. That’s just a growing reality for a number of American families and now more than ever, it’s so important to have bathrooms that work well for everybody in the entire family.  While a four-inch-high shower curb might be really easy for a young person to step over; could seem like a mountaintop for Grandma, so curbless showers and the elimination of that curb could be just the answer for making it an equal opportunity shower.

2. Easier to Clean

When you have to clean a small corner shower enclosure with a curb, it can be an experience that is extremely difficult and frustrating. Curbless showers use the space much more effectively–opening it up to the rest of your bathroom; which makes it much easier for reaching in and cleaning it. And, don’t forget about hand-held showerhead options. A hand-held showerhead with a hose makes cleaning even easier by reducing all of that bending down. Let’s face it, nobody likes cleaning the shower, so the easier the better.

CYLINDRICAL

TEAK

MODERN BEACHY

Definitely a beachy vibe in this bathroom.  The pretty soft blue tile is so comforting & relaxing.

MASCULINE

Refreshing Curbless Showers and Their Benefits - Sebring Design Build

Kast Concrete Basins

While the tile is very soft in color and feeling, the other features have a more masculine feel.

3. Better Visibility

When you have a beautifully designed shower, a curb and/or standard style door can physically cut off your view of any intricate stone or tile accouterments. But, an open shower that is completely barrier-free can provide better sight-lines that show off your luxury shower.

Curbless Showers – Design Ideas

When choosing a shower design, it’s not “one size fits all”.   Take a look at the following curbless shower designs to get inspired and motivated to create a custom curbless shower of your own.

WORLD-CLASS

Refreshing Curbless Showers and Their Benefits - Sebring Design Build

Maria Barcelona Interiors, LLC

This master bathroom is just stunning.  Tons of natural light/tied into the outdoors, beautiful stone plus upscale fixtures.

Doorless Showers Designs

This type of shower design is just about as close as you can possibly get to that fabulous feeling of an outdoor shower. You may think of it extravagant, but it’s definitely not beyond reach.  Showers that are not obstructed by a standard shower door or shower curtain are not necessarily all that new but their popularity is rapidly growing all over the country. Have you ever watched TV? If you have, then you’ve probably witnessed firsthand just how popular doorless showers designs have become over the past few years. Every house-hunter on those shows is wowed when they enter the bathroom in a potential new home and see that it has a beautiful doorless shower. It’s always a really big selling point and could be for you, as well, down the road if you ever decide to put your home on the market. Everybody these days loves doorless showers designs.

Walk-in Shower Cost

Your actual total cost of installation can vary according to some product-specific costs that include:

Shower Pan vs. Full Shower UnitShower SizeRemodeling vs. New ConstructionShower Material Used: Acrylic, Fiberglass, or Solid SurfaceAccessories

Curbless Walk-In Showers

Everyone, from grandkids to grandparents, can use it. As healthcare expenditures continue to rise and several generations living under the same roof become a more common occurrence for many American families, it’s more critical than ever to have a bathroom that can accommodate family members. A 4” tall shower curb that a teenager may easily step over can be a mountain for their granny. By removing the curb, the shower becomes an “equal opportunity” zone.

Simpler to clean than a shower enclosure: Cleaning a small corner or alcove shower enclosure may be an excruciatingly painful experience for your elbows. The removal of a curb effectively opens up the shower space to the bathroom, making it easier to reach in and clean.

Show off your stylish shower: A shower enclosure with a curb and a door block the view of complex stone, tile, or ornate wall panels. An open barrier-free shower gives sightlines into the wet area, allowing a luxury shower to be displayed.

Maximize every square inch: My friend in Italy had a curbless one-level shower in a 4′ x 6′ bathroom. There was no separate bathing area in this utilitarian area. The room only had a showerhead, vanity, and toilet fixed on the walls. While your shower doesn’t have to be as simple, it’s comforting to know that you can make better use of space by removing the barrier of an enclosure and a curbed shower base in tiny bathrooms.

Removes the cost and inconvenience of installing a shower door: Cleaning shower doors can be time-consuming, and shower doors are not inexpensive. A curbless walk-in shower eliminates the necessity (and cost) for a shower door.

They can be installed in small spaces: While a huge shower is lovely, not everyone has the space they would like. However, just because you need or want a curbless shower doesn’t mean you need the space found in a million-dollar home.

Installation of a curbless shower pan necessitates skill and attention to detail.

Otherwise, the entire shower could be a big flop, which would be terrible.

Plus, you’d be wasting a lot of time and money, so leave it to the experts!

So, hopefully, these points have helped you a bit with making your decision about a bathroom remodel for your home.  Whether you choose one of the many available doorless showers designs, a curbless shower, or both; you’re sure to get many years of comfort and enjoyment for both yourself and your family from your new and improved shower. Just like those beautiful homes on TV, your home will not just be a testament to the benefits of home improvement right now but also in the future.

Remember, you don’t have to suffer with a small outdated shower that’s hard to clean and unpleasing to take a shower in. If it’s ugly, outdated, or just plain in need of a makeover, there are plenty of great design options to choose from.

How to Choose a Mattress

So we reached out to our readers over at our Instagram to find out what buying guides you would like us to cover. A good number of you wanted to find out how to buy a mattress. We get it—with so many different types out there, it’s no wonder things can get confusing.

Choosing the right type of mattress

Foam

Made from a blend of polyurethane foam and different chemicals, foam mattresses come in all sorts of grades and density. One of the most popular (and expensive!) types is memory foam, which has superior conforming properties i.e. they conform to your body shape and stay that way, thus reducing pressure on the body. Memory foam is thus recommended for people who have back and joint pains.

Foam mattresses also reduce motion transfer, with memory foam the best at it. If you or your sleeping partner is a light sleeper, memory foam is a good choice since it has fantastic motion absorption properties so any tossing or turning won’t be felt as much.

The main downside to foam mattresses is that they tend to retain heat. Memory foam is particularly notorious for this. But it’s not a big problem if you sleep in an air-conditioning environment. If choosing memory foam, opt for ones that have an open cell structure, which comes with internal pockets to improve ventilation and dispel heat.

The other drawback to foam mattresses is that they can sag over time because of a lack of structural support. Rotate them every few months to allow the material to regain its shape.

Latex Foam (Natural, Synthetic or Blended)

Image courtesy of Heveya by European Bedding

Latex foam, when compared with memory foam, is firmer and offers more bounce. It is also much cooler to sleep on a mattress made from latex foam, as compared with memory foam.

100% natural latex is harvested from natural rubber tree sap and then processed to create foam layers with no fillers. These are hypoallergenic, making them suitable for people who suffer from allergies. Because of their high cost (and their less plush look), they aren’t as commonly sold in mattress companies in Singapore. Some companies market their latex mattress as natural even if fillers are included in the natural latex, so it’s best to ask questions.

Blended latex mattresses are a mix of natural and synthetic latex. The percentages do differ from brand to brand, although most comprise a higher percentage of synthetic latex.

Synthetic latex is a more economical option, and they are engineered from a bunch of petrochemicals to feel like natural latex. You do enjoy similar advantages as natural latex, although in terms of comfort level, it is stiffer.

Individual Pocket Spring (or Pocket Coil)

Image courtesy of Sleep Tech Magazine

Pocket spring mattresses are made up of metal springs, individually wrapped inside fabric “pockets”. These are placed near the top of the mattress, with foam (memory foam or latex foam) over them to offer support and comfort. The more coils there are, the more support it gives, but it’s also important to pay attention to the foam composition when it comes to comfort.

Because each spring is not connected, motion transfer is also reduced, although not as much as memory foam. This can also mean that some parts of a pocket spring mattress can age faster than others, depending on where you sleep. Rotating your bed regularly can help to mitigate this problem.

Innerspring Coil or Open Coil

One of the cheaper options out there, these mattresses are traditional types with inner coils that are interconnected. The technology is somewhat outdated and superseded by pocket springs. Still, it’s an option to consider if budget is a concern.

Innerspring mattresses offer a firm support, but they have limited contouring capabilities. They are also particularly bouncy (and squeaky) and are the worst when it comes to motion transfer—definitely not ideal for restless sleepers.

Hybrid

Image courtesy of Too Kind Studio

Hybrid mattresses are multi-layered, comprising different layers and materials to suit different needs. A large number of beds offered in Singapore are actually hybrids.

They are typically a combination of memory foam and latex, with an innerspring or pocket spring system. The idea behind hybrids is that they offer a bit more support than with a purely memory foam or latex foam bed.

Some come with a pillow top, which offers extra cushioning, while others can have a gel layer or cooling technology added for better temperature management.

Where to buy: mattress retailers

There are big name, well-established mattress brands in Singapore like Four Stars, Sealy, King Koil, Tempur, Simmons, Slumberland, Seahorse, Silent Night, Sleepy Night and Dunlopillo, just to name a few. Here’s a general overview of their mattress range, based on available information on their official sites:

Then there are smaller “online-only” retailers like Origin, Haylee, Baton, Woosa, and Noa that are known for their “mattress-in-a-box”—mattresses that are delivered to your home in a box.

The downside to them is that you can’t test them out first in a physical store. The upside? They offer a trial period (between 30 days to 100 days) where you can test them out for free and return them for a full refund if you find them unsuitable later on.

Testing out your mattress and firmness levels

Design: Provolk Architects

Try out the mattress by lying down for a good 5 to 15 mins if you are buying them from physical stores. Don’t be paiseh! If you are getting the mattress with your partner, make sure to test it out with him or her, as you both have different preferences.

Don’t choose a mattress firmness that is too different from your existing one to allow your body to adjust properly to a new comfort level. When it comes to firmness, most people prefer those in the medium firm or medium range for a good balance of comfort and support.

Softer beds offer more contour and pressure relief, ideal if you sleep on the side. They are also more suited if you weigh on the lighter side. Those on the heavier side can find it difficult to get up on a bed that is too soft.

Beds that are firmer are more suited for back or stomach sleepers and for people on the heavier side as there is no sinking feel. However, firmer beds may not feel too luxurious or comfortable.

Mattress dimensions

Design: Arche Interior

When buying mattresses, do pay attention to mattress dimensions since they will need to fit your space or your bed. Mattress sizes in Singapore differ from ones in Europe, which are also common here. Then there is IKEA, which has their own set of rules.

In general, these are the common sizes for mattresses in Singapore:

Single: 91cm x 190cm
Super Single: 107cm x 190cm
Queen: 152cm x 190cm
King: 182cm x 190cm

European mattress sizing are as follows:

Single: 90cm x 200cm
Double: 140cm x 200cm
Queen: 160cm x 200cm
King: 180cm x 200cm

If you are getting a mattress from IKEA, here are the dimensions to keep in mind:

COLORFUL RUNNER

Character Revival Co.

Great inspiration for if you want to add a runner to your stairs.

Carpeting – Carpeting gives the stairway and extra dose of warmth and coziness. It can also help in reducing noise when people are going up and down. If you have kids, carpeting acts as an extra safety feature in case they fall. Two main carpet ideas to choose from: full carpeting or stair runners.

Full Carpeting  –  covers every inch of the stairway floor. It comes in handy if the stair flooring is not too appealing. If your stairs have a bit of wear and you don’t want to do a full remodel, full carpeting will cover the aging. On the downside, a full carpet is harder and more expensive to install. Talk about the costs with your contractor before you begin.

Carpet Runners – leave the edges of the stairs visible. Runners are ideal when you don’t want to fully cover your beautiful stairway. Runners will add some warmth without hiding the flooring. Runners are easier and cheaper to install. If you are handy with home improvement projects you can even install the runner yourself. Most homeowners opt for boldly patterned runners to add detail and texture to an otherwise neutral space. Find a unique pattern that blends in with the surrounding décor but still draws the eyes towards the staircase. You can also opt for neutral non-patterned carpeting if you want a plain minimalist style. This is also where you can add some interest with texture.

Painted Surfaces

If you don’t want to cover your stairway but don’t want to leave it plain either, try your hand at illusions. With some creativity and a pro’s help, you can transform your plain stairway into anything you want. One popular trick is to create a runner illusion. The stairs are painted such that they look like they have a carpet runner on them. You can also go full artsy and create a movie or nature scene on the stairway. This can be especially handy for long staircases as the art provides a distraction from the long journey up.

The Railing

Next to the risers and treads, the railing is the next most important part of a stairway. Its primary role is functional, providing people with an easy and safe way to go up and down the stairs. It also influences the overall stairway and space decor. There as many ideas for the railing as there are for the stairway flooring. They range from fun and unique nautical rope railings to clean contemporary glass and steel rails with dozens of other great stairs railing ideas in between. Depending on the style and type of railing, there are several important components of a stairway rail. Mixing and matching among these components can produce a wide variety of unique styles.

WALNUT STAIRCASE

Specialized Stair and Rail

Spindles/Balusters/Handrail

The spindles or balusters take up most of the space. These are the series of rods or columns extending from the top rail (another component) to the bottom rail (yet another component). The top rail is also called the handrail, an obvious reference to its role as the main hand support when going up or down the stairs.

Styles & Designs

In traditional and country designs, wooden spindles are common. The spindles can either be plain square, shaped into a descending spiral or have tapered ends. The advantage of wooden handrails is that they feel warm to the touch. Additionally, they wear well, getting smoother with use.In industrial and contemporary decors, you are more likely to find metal – usually steel or iron – spindles. These come in a wide variety of styles from plain rods to intricate designs that combine different shapes and patterns. In modern homes, the metal rods are made very thin and usually run parallel to the handrail rather than up-down. This creates a minimalist barely-there look. For an even cleaner look, you can eschew spindles and use solid glass instead. But it will cost you a bundle. The top and bottom rails provide an opportunity to complement the style of the balusters. A common strategy is to use metal spindles and wooden top and bottom rails. Most modern stairway ideas leave out the bottom rail to avoid a light-blocking stairway.Other stairs handrail ideas include smooth aluminum (usually combined with solid glass railing), a rounded metal rail (combined with metal spindles) and all-glass designs where there is no distinct handrail. Some stairway designs also add a unique style to the newels – the handrail supporting posts at the start and end of the stairway. For instance, the newels may consist of thick distinctive wooden pillars with ornate patterns. They can also be simple metal rods that don’t stand out much from the rest of the supporting posts along the length of the stairway.

Lighting

Like most other components of a stairway, the lighting has both aesthetic and functional roles. Without proper illumination, going up and down the stairs can be a safety hazard especially for children and the elderly.

The traditional overhead light is often not possible either because there is another staircase above or the ceiling is too high. If you are looking for a way to flood the entire staircase with light, install a fixture on the wall of the stairway landing. Make sure it is bright enough to extend up to the top or bottom of the stairs.

A more common strategy is using recessed lights. You can install recessed lights along the wall of the stairway. Stagger the lights in a way that lights up each tread properly. You can also have a continuous LED strip recessed along the wall to ensure each spot on the stairs is illuminated.

Another place to locate LED strips is under the trend. This is possible only in a certain stairway designs such as floating stair treads or where the tread extends slightly over the riser. The underside lighting is a great way to illuminate the stairway without casting harsh light into people’s eyes when going up or down the stairs. It also adds an eye-catching style to the staircase.

If you are going for the wow factor, there are a few stairs lighting ideas to borrow from. A unique one is to use multicolored LED strips that light up in different hues up the stairway. But be careful with this one as it can create a gaudy nightclub feel.

If you have an accessible ceiling above the stairway, add a series of hanging lights, making sure they are low enough to provide enough lighting.

Making The Most Of Stairway Design Ideas

Staircases serve as the home’s spine. They not only connect rooms and stories within a house, but they are frequently the first space a visitor encounters at the entryway. As a result, stairs must serve two functions: they must be both welcoming and useful.

With such an elevated place within the home, staircases demand just as much decorative thought and polish as the rest of the house. Staircases, for example, are perfect places for trendy wallpaper or a splash of unexpected color. Unique lighting, an artsy collection, and eye-catching runners are other excellent ways to bring life to a staircase. Finally, hand-forged iron or bespoke fretwork banisters can transform steps into sculptural works of art.

Staircases, although certainly providing a vital functional purpose, have the power to elevate an entire property. Stairs may be so much more than just a way of getting from point A to point B. We’ve highlighted distinctive stairs that prove it, from interlocking treads to stunning corkscrews. So, whether you’re planning a redesign and need some stunning stair design ideas for your home, or you enjoy admiring architectural marvels, these steps will get you there.

Stairway Dimensions

When upgrading or building a home, critical measures such as standard stairway width, riser height, and tread depth are not left to chance. Staircase dimensions are regulated by common practice and building code, which is frequently influenced by commonly accepted norms. These guidelines are intended to make staircases as safe as possible. Thus, they should never be disregarded or ignored.

At the same time, because most measures are accompanied by minimums or maximums, staircase code measurements allow for considerable flexibility. The conventional stair width is a classic example. Stairs must be three feet wide or wider, according to staircase code. You can widen the steps as much as you want as long as the three-foot width criteria is met.

Bonus Tips

Some good stairway design ideas for small spaces include using thin metal spindles or combining glass with metal. This leaves the room still airy and bright.Don’t forget to make good use of the space below the staircase.Make sure you follow local code on safety when deciding the stairway design. Your contractor can help you with this. The stairway is not just about rails and spindles. If there is a wall along the staircase, it is a great place to add family photographs and art. They provide a nice distraction from the arduous journey up.Don’t forget to marry the staircase design with the décor of the space around it. As much as you need to make the stairway a unique piece of décor on its own, it also needs to blend in smoothly with the surrounding space. Use color, patterns, and materials to provide a nice blending and transition from the stairway to the room it leads into.

How to Choose a Residential Stucco Contractor

stucco contractor

A residential stucco contractor is someone who uses traditional stucco to build the exterior walls of a home. In addition, he can work on the interior of a house as well. While the exterior wall finishes look very lovely with a stucco contractor’s touch, the stucco does the actual work when it comes to protecting the home. With this in mind, residential Stucco Contractors Tampa FL are often considered the best choice for many homeowners. It enhances and beautifies their homes without paying a fortune to do it.stucco contractor

However, there are a few issues with hiring a residential stucco contractor to do the work for you. While many reputable companies will perform stucco repair, there are just as many that will not. As such, it pays to be a bit cautious in your search for a good company. Here are some tips that can help you in finding the right stucco repair contractor.

One of the most important things to look for in residential stucco contractors is experience. Although most of the exterior walls of homes today are made of traditional stucco, there is always the chance that newer products become available. If a company has only recently started using the new technology in its product line, it is probably time for the company to find a different job.

In addition to experience, you should also consider the quality of materials that the stucco business uses for its work. Most contractors install their products using modern technology, including eifs. eifts are the latest in exterior stucco technology and are far superior to traditional stucco. When a contractor switches from traditional stucco to life, the exterior walls of the home will look more smooth and less bumpy.

The appearance of life is also much better than traditional stucco. An exterior stucco contractor who has switched from traditional stucco to life is likely to use its in all of his or her future projects. eifts are available in a wide range of colors, so homeowners can match the exterior walls of their home with the color of their siding. Some homeowners may even decide to match the color of their exterior walls with that of their garage door. If this is the case, then the exterior stucco contractor should definitely have a great deal of experience with garage doors. This is something that many people forget about when they are hiring a residential stucco company.

The appearance of an exterior wall will also differ greatly depending on how much weather exposure it has had over the years. A good contractor will be able to take all of this information into consideration before he starts working on your home. Most exterior stucco contractors should be familiar with different types of paint and whether or not they will be compatible with your home.

An experienced stucco contractor will also be familiar with home improvements such as reinforcing walls, basement waterproofing, and other types of projects that homeowners usually undertake at one time or another. Some homeowners might feel as though they are being forced to do these things because the home is new. Rather than being forced, it is best for homeowners to hire a professional stucco contractor to do these improvements to their homes.

A residential stucco company can also give homeowners some advice on ways to maintain their home’s exterior at a low cost. There are some maintenance products that are better suited for certain climates than others. If the stucco is applied properly and effectively, it can stand up against some of the more severe weather conditions that are more common in certain areas of the country. Even if you live in an area that experiences mild winters and mild summers, there are some ways you can still improve the appearance of your home. By hiring residential Stucco Contractors, you can have a beautiful exterior without spending a great deal of money or effort to make it happen.

What are Frameless Glass Shower Doors?

Frameless glass shower doors as just that–glass shower doors without framing. Traditional framed glass shower doors make use of metal, rubber or some other material to secure the glass along the edges. The result is a bulky look that can become an eyesore especially for small bathrooms.

A frameless shower door does away with the framing, creating a cleaner and less cluttered look. Many homeowners will also agree that a frameless shower door is less of a hassle to clean and maintain. A quick wipe is enough to get it looking sparkling clean.

But the beauty and airiness of frameless glass shower doors comes with a number of downsides. For one, the cost of a frameless shower door is much higher than that of framed doors. This is due to the increased complexity to design and install frameless glass shower doors. Secondly, these doors come with a higher risk of leaking water into other areas of the bathroom. Proper design is essential in preventing this.

With good installation and proper maintenance, a frameless glass shower door is one of the best bathroom upgrades you can make. It leaves your bathroom feeling airier, brighter and bigger.

Key Considerations When Buying a Frameless Shower Door

If you have decided to go ahead with a frameless shower door, there are some essential considerations to keep in mind as you look for the right one.

1. Fully Frameless Glass vs. Semi-Frameless Glass

One of the biggest frustrations when it comes to buying a frameless glass shower door is the lack of standards. One seller will define a frameless shower door in a different way from another and a third one will choose yet another definition. Honestly, it can be pretty confusing to a lot of homeowners.

Two terms you will come across are fully frameless and semi-frameless. Some shower doors make use of long U channels at the bottom or sides of the door to secure it. While some sellers will still say this is a frameless door the more accurate term agreed on by many in the industry is semi-frameless. Other frameless shower glass doors use clamps to secure the glass door to the wall or a fixed glass panel. This is what many refer to as a fully frameless shower door.

When you go shopping ask whether the door uses U channels or clamps (sometimes called clips). Clamps generally have a more minimalist look compared to U channels.

WOOD ACCENT

Fine Focus Photography

Wood accents add warmth to this gorgeous bath. That frameless shower is huge!

2. Type of Hardware

Another very important issue is the type of hardware used on the door. This refers to the material used in the U channel (for semi-frameless glass doors) and in the clamps (for fully frameless glass doors) as well as any other component including the hinges.

You will find terms like brass construction, aluminum construction and anodized construction. If possible, always go for brass hardware. Shower frameless glass doors are quite heavy, sometimes weighing up to 200 lbs. The hardware used must be able to bear all that weight safely and ensure structural integrity. Brass is much better at this than aluminum and many other materials you encounter.

You can then choose to have the brass components coated in a finishing of your liking. Common finishes include chrome, oil rubbed bronze and brushed nickel.

One tip that can help you determine that you are buying the right hardware is to ask for part numbers. Look up the part numbers online to find original manufacturer information. This will tell you exactly what materials are used and safe weight tolerances as stated by the manufacturer.

NATURAL FEEL

Frameless Glass Shower Doors - Sebring Design Build

Cornerstone Architects

Natural lighting and natural materials in this bathroom creates a relaxing and functional space.

3. Type of Hinges

For the door to open and close, it must be fitted with a hinge. Installing a hinge on a glass door and a frameless one at that, is an entirely different kettle of fish from installing a hinge on a normal door. The hinge must be able to support the weight of the door and allow it to turn smoothly without any problem.

There are three types of hinges you can use for your frameless shower door: door-to-wall hinges, pivot hinges and glass-to-glass hinges. Ask your contractor for recommendation on which is best in your situation. Each hinge comes with its own benefits and complications.

For example, a glass-to-glass hinge is more problematic to install compared to a glass-to-wall hinge. A pivot hinge has the advantage of allowing the shower door to open 180 degrees in either direction.

CURBLESS

Frameless Glass Shower Doors - Sebring Design Build

VB Inc.

This bathroom definitely has a more masculine feel. Love the sealed concrete floor.

4. Type and Thickness of Glass

Lacking in framing, frameless shower doors must be thicker to achieve proper support and structural integrity. There are two sizes that are recommended: 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch. Anything thinner than this and your shower door will keep wobbling whenever you open or close it. Note that 1/2 inch frameless shower doors cost more than 3/8 ones.

In addition to the thickness, you also need to choose the type of glass you prefer. This is mostly a matter of aesthetics and each seller stocks different variations, some with proprietary names. Some of the options you will come across include clear glass, frosted glass and rain glass. One thing they all have in common–they are all tempered glass. Tempered glass is as a result of a special manufacturing process that makes it stronger and changes how it breaks. In case of breakage, it fragments into numerous small chunks that are not as hazardous as normal glass.

Reasons To Go For Frameless Glass Shower Doors

1. Frameless shower doors provide the appearance of a larger bathroom.

Glass has a natural propensity to make a space appear and feel larger. Frameless shower doors are composed of durable glass with thicknesses ranging from 3/8” to 1/2”.

Because thicker glass bends less, it does not need to be supported by a frame.

It also expands the appearance of even the smallest bathroom. Shower door layouts in frameless styles can be adapted to fit bathrooms of any size.

2. Elegant designs are possible with glass doors.

Frameless showers have a seamless appearance because they use almost no metal. The glass is attached to the wall directly with discreet and straightforward hardware. Many one-of-a-kind designs feature glass on numerous or all sides for an ultramodern look.

3. Clear glass keeps your bathroom feeling open and airy.

Because frameless glass shower doors enable you to see through them, they do not operate as a visual barrier similar to a shower curtain or framed door would.

This creates a more open and airy feeling in your bathroom, making it appear larger, brighter, and less confining.

4. Frameless glass doors let in natural light.

Using natural light in the bathroom has various advantages—a good source of vitamin D, flawless cosmetic application, hair removal, and higher self-esteem. Shaving your legs behind a dark shower curtain or squinting under fluorescent lights is never a brilliant idea. When it comes to light, frameless glass shower doors ensure that you have plenty of it.

5. Display beautiful tile designs

The beauty of your shower is overshadowed by opaque doors that give the impression that a giant box is sitting in your bathroom. This takes away from the natural feel and grandeur of your bathroom decor. Frameless glass shower doors enable greater aesthetic enjoyment by providing a clearer view of the tile pattern, color, and embellishments.

6. Provides a spa-like environment

Bathroom renovations provide an excellent return on investment, both financially and personally. The use of frameless glass shower doors adds a sense of calm and transparency to the space.

Note About Accessories

Make sure to ask the seller what kind of accessories come with the door and which ones you can add on your own. All shower doors come with a door handle while others also provide a towel bar. Other accessories you may want to include would be a threshold to prevent leakage, towel bar/handle combos and recommended glass cleaner.

1.  Put Aside Money for the Unexpected

Planning your budget is a natural first step for any big project plans. But when factoring your budget, don’t just add up the costs of your new materials and labor and call it a day. There are plenty of other expenses you’ll need to consider as well. This is especially the case when it comes to unexpected expenses.

The worst feeling is when you are halfway through your remodeling project and you are suddenly hit with a surprise cost. Maybe you lifted up the sink to find a huge leak, and you’ll need to call in the emergency plumbers. Or perhaps there is some mold you need to get rid of before your true remodeling plans can begin. All of this costs a little extra cash, and you’ll be grateful to have some savings set aside for emergency situations like this.

2. Order Your Materials Ahead of Time

It can take a while to decide what kind of materials, surfaces, products, and colors you want your new bathroom to consist of. But once you do decide, you should start ordering everything as early as you can.

Everything from the new sink faucets to the bathroom floor tile should be ordered in advance. Don’t wait until you set your project start date to order the materials. They should already be paid for and on their way to you before you even begin with your bathroom remodeling project.

If something is missing in the middle of your renovation, it will halt the entire process, which may mean that your contractors have to work longer than planned, costing you more money up front.

3. Increased Quality

Because everything from the cabinetry to the flooring is custom; quality is assured. In other words, you get full value for your money. Your bathroom is likely to last longer and require less maintenance over time.  Not only can you choose custom parts, but you can ensure that each and every new material is made to your standards. Just remember to stay true to your budget!

4. Specific Needs

Each home has unique needs that a generic bathroom cannot meet. For example, there may be someone with a disability and requires special fittings in the bathroom. There may be an elderly person who would benefit from a customized shower design. There may be children whose safety must be taken into account when designing the bathroom.

All these needs can only be fulfilled by a custom bathroom.

5. A Place that Makes You Happy

In the end, the purpose of a home is not just to provide a roof over our heads. It is also a personal sanctuary where you can relax and be yourself. A bathroom is even more personal in nature. Nothing beats a place that makes you happy and this is what a custom bathroom will make you feel. You get the colors you want, the materials you want, the atmosphere you desire; it is simply the perfect bathroom.

3. Prepare for Demolition

In order for the new products to come in, the old products must first go out. Demolition is the first step to clearing out your bathroom in order to make way for your new plans. And to be honest, the demolition process is usually one of the fastest and easiest parts of the whole project. But there are still a couple of things you should keep in mind:

● Demolition makes a lot of noise and it would be a good idea to remove all family members and pets from the home during this time.

● Demolition can cause dust and other particles to float in the air for quite some time, so if you are going to remain in the home, you should invest in a mask and some eye protection.

● It’s vital that all of your plumbing and electricity hookups are disconnected before you begin removing appliances.

What do you do if you aren’t removing everything from the bathroom? Perhaps you want to keep your existing shower or sink. You can leave it in the room, but make sure to protect it with padding and plywood so it stays unscathed during the process.

4. Don’t Make New Changes

Once the project has begun, it is really difficult to make any sudden changes. Your budget has been set, your materials have been ordered, and your contractors have been hired. To make a change order in the middle of all the building can really take precious time and money away from everyone involved, especially yourself.

This is especially true if you ask for changes that totally stray away from your original plans and designs. This is just asking to increase costs and make things more difficult for your remodeling team.

5. Upgrade the Essentials

Bathroom remodels usually focus on the visual aspects of the room that you are looking forward to upgrading. It’s exciting to pick out new cabinets, countertops, tiling, and bathtubs. Everything can be totally refreshed and refurbished to create a new bathroom look. But you can’t forget about the essential, unseen things.

Benefits of Custom Bathrooms

1. The Perfect Design

You have your dream bathroom in mind. Maybe you want quartz floors, a granite tub, a rainfall shower and so on. A custom bathroom delivers the perfect design, ensuring you get exactly what you desire. Whether you wanted a romantic double tub, a private spa area, a disability access bathroom, a breathtaking view of the outdoors, you can get it all.

In the end, you will be happier and more satisfied with the bathroom for a long time to come. Even more importantly, you will get a bathroom that fits your unique needs.

2. Maximize Space

In many homes, the bathroom is usually one of the smallest rooms in the house. Generic designs tend to under utilize the small space available, leaving dead spaces that could have been put to better use. With a custom bathroom, you can make efficient use of the space available, be it big or small.

Take it a step further with floating shelves and cabinets to maximize your floor space. This is a good opportunity to invest in hidden storage so you can remain organized yet un-cluttered.

Few Things To Keep in Mind

It does not have to be big. Despite what the magazines tell you, a custom bathroom does not have to be a monstrous room set within an expansive mansion. You can turn your small ordinary bathroom into a luxurious custom space. In the same breath, it does not have to be expensive. It is true that custom bathroom designs will cost more than a generic one, but they do not have to be ridiculously expensive. There are plenty of custom bathrooms designs that can be achieved on a budget.Insist on the best. For best results, go for high quality items. Whether it is the flooring, the cabinets or the lighting, opt for the highest quality. They will last longer and make your bathroom look better.Be bold. Before you even think about the costs involved, determine what kind of bathroom you want. Do not hold back. Whether you want opulent and luxurious, clean and urban or warm and spacious, go for it. Once you decide what you want, it becomes easier to plan around it. You can even work with the contractor to find areas where you can cut the costs down to your budget.Understand what you are getting into. Too often, homeowners will desire a luxury bathroom without contemplating issues like maintenance and cleaning. Make sure you understand exactly what you are getting. Will the bathroom require special care? What kind of maintenance is required? Ask a lot of such questions before proceeding.

dvantages Of Custom Bathrooms

Is your bathroom conducive for rest, ritual, and relaxation? It ought to. A bathroom redesign may boost your home’s happiness and turn your everyday routine into something you look forward to.

Did you know that taking an hour-long bath can lower your risk of having a heart attack, improve your blood sugar control, and even protect you from illnesses and infections? A warm soak can also burn the same number of calories as a 30-minute stroll! These are only some of the benefits that researchers are discovering as they learn more about the wealth of health benefits that soaking baths provide. Many other self-care rituals, including aromatherapy, gua sha, and body masks, are derived from morning and bedtime routines.

Do you have the same rejuvenating energy when you think of your bathroom? If not, it may be time for a new design. A master bathroom redesign allows you to add bespoke features and materials to your bathroom that are tailored to your tastes and budget.

A custom bathroom can be used as an in-home therapeutic retreat with the right design ideas. However, for far too many homeowners, the master bathroom is nothing more than a source of frustration. A gloomy atmosphere is created by unsightly mildew, old appearances, and insufficient lighting. It’s no surprise that the majority of homeowners remodel their bathrooms because they dislike the area. A well-designed bathroom is vital not only for the value of your home but also for your entire well-being.

So go ahead and envision a dream that you can transform into a reality. It can be challenging to narrow down your style and look with many gorgeous bathroom renovation samples available. Why Go Dark?

Dark cabinets will introduce a certain richness and depth that lighter colors just cannot achieve. The color invites you to linger, be calm, and ponder. While it may not trigger the exuberant feeling you get in a white-cabinet kitchen, it brings about a calm excitement.

The calmness and depth of dark colors work perfectly for luxury-themed kitchens. However, it is important to note that dark kitchen themes require considerably more expertise and care to pull off. If you are not sure of your mix and matching abilities, you are better off seeking advice from an interior decorating expert. When matched with the right colors and textures, dark cabinets create a stunning luxe look no one can help but fall in love with.

Choosing the Right Color

You already know you want dark kitchen cabinets. But what shade should it be brown? Most cabinet sellers will feature dozens, if not hundreds, of dark shades ranging from tan to ash grey to pitch black.

The first step is to find out what dark varieties your preferred cabinet vendor has. Chances are that they have dark extremes of each color. Decide what dark shade will work best for your kitchen. When most people think about dark kitchen cabinets, they automatically see the color black or grey. But you can get dark versions of any color, apart from white of course. You can choose to go with black, dark red, dark green, dark brown and so on.

If you are going for a super luxurious look, black and grey will work best. If you are looking for something to match brown flooring, dark brown or red cabinets might fit in perfectly. If you want a unique look, try unusual colors such as dark green. If you want a bit of the excitement of bright colors combined with the calm of dark shades, try dark yellow (the color of olives).

The most important thing is figuring out what will work well with other aspects of your kitchen and the final look you are aiming for. This is because, while all dark shades will have a similar calming and in-depth character, each dark shade also has its own unique impact on the look and feel of the kitchen. Mahogany colored cabinets (a dark shade of red) will feel quite different from Sangria cabinets (a deep shade of purple).

Compare, compare, and keep comparing until you find something that is perfect for your kitchen.

Mixing and Matching

The most crucial part of choosing dark kitchen cabinets is knowing how to mix and match them with other colors and textures. This is what will determine how good the kitchen looks in the end. Here are a few mix and match tips you will find helpful as you consider installing dark kitchen cabinets.

Balance the dark shades with lighter colors. Unless you want a Gothic kitchen, too much dark can be depressing. Balance out the dark shade you have chosen with some lighter hues. One common combination, especially for luxury themed kitchens, is black and white. Most dark shades also go well with white. You can also include aspects of other lighter colors such as a yellow backsplash, brown flooring or a red accent wall.Make sure there is plenty of natural light coming in. If you are not careful, dark shades can create the perception of a much smaller room and can be depressing. To counter this, check that you have a lot of natural light coming in. At night, have enough lighting to keep the place looking bright and airy.Match with other dark elements. While dark cabinets will pop out beautifully against a light colored wall, they also look great when matched with dark flooring or other dark colored elements in the kitchen. This will prevent the cabinets from looking like the sad loner in the room. You can match them with dark flooring, a dark accent wall or a dark countertop.

As we mentioned, mixing and matching dark shades with other elements is a bit trickier than if you had light colored cabinets to work with. If you are not comfortable with your capabilities, get some help from an expert.

Here are some ideas for dark kitchen cabinets you can use in your renovation process. Find the style that best suits your kitchen and either borrow it or tweak it to perfection.

Reasons To Go For Dark Kitchen Cabinets

1) Scratches, dings, and stains are readily concealed.

If your kitchen is a busy hub in your house, black cabinetry may be the best option. Dark colors will disguise daily wear and tear better than white cabinets for households with children and pets and those who cook and entertain frequently.

2) A wide range of design options.

Lighter-colored cabinets are frequently used to open up space and create a lovely yet subtle kitchen. Dark cabinets, on the other hand, serve as a natural focal point. Create design interest by combining light and dark cabinetry, and incorporate color with lighting, flooring, and accessories to give the kitchen a distinct look.

3) A sense of luxury.

Dark cabinets lend depth, richness, and a sense of luxury to the finishes of a kitchen. Dark cabinets, as opposed to white cabinets, can provide a more personal environment and formal elegance in the kitchen.

4) Contrasting styles.

Cabinets in dark colors are bold. They may turn a boring, traditional kitchen into a colorful and inviting environment where your friends and family will happily meet. The room becomes more dynamic and playful when you use high-contrast colors, such as a two-tone design with white upper cabinets and dark base cabinets. Homeowners can incorporate more vibrant colors into their decor and accent pieces.

5) Comfortable and welcoming.

Dark shaker kitchen cabinets with a black and dark grey finish may create a friendly and cozy kitchen ambiance.

6) It’s ideal for large kitchens.

In a large kitchen, light-colored cabinets can feel dull and institutional. Dark cabinets will warm up the space and allow you to incorporate various decor and accent items for an eclectic aesthetic. Lighting, flooring, and art with contrasting colors will add bursts of color to complement the dark cabinets.

7) Numerous color options.

Dark cabinets are available in various wood finishes, including black, grey, blue, purple, green, red, and dark brown. In terms of dark paint and stain hues, the sky is the limit.
