How to Choose a Mattress

So we reached out to our readers over at our Instagram to find out what buying guides you would like us to cover. A good number of you wanted to find out how to buy a mattress. We get it—with so many different types out there, it’s no wonder things can get confusing.

Choosing the right type of mattress

Foam

Made from a blend of polyurethane foam and different chemicals, foam mattresses come in all sorts of grades and density. One of the most popular (and expensive!) types is memory foam, which has superior conforming properties i.e. they conform to your body shape and stay that way, thus reducing pressure on the body. Memory foam is thus recommended for people who have back and joint pains.

Foam mattresses also reduce motion transfer, with memory foam the best at it. If you or your sleeping partner is a light sleeper, memory foam is a good choice since it has fantastic motion absorption properties so any tossing or turning won’t be felt as much.

The main downside to foam mattresses is that they tend to retain heat. Memory foam is particularly notorious for this. But it’s not a big problem if you sleep in an air-conditioning environment. If choosing memory foam, opt for ones that have an open cell structure, which comes with internal pockets to improve ventilation and dispel heat.

The other drawback to foam mattresses is that they can sag over time because of a lack of structural support. Rotate them every few months to allow the material to regain its shape.

Latex Foam (Natural, Synthetic or Blended)

Image courtesy of Heveya by European Bedding

Latex foam, when compared with memory foam, is firmer and offers more bounce. It is also much cooler to sleep on a mattress made from latex foam, as compared with memory foam.

100% natural latex is harvested from natural rubber tree sap and then processed to create foam layers with no fillers. These are hypoallergenic, making them suitable for people who suffer from allergies. Because of their high cost (and their less plush look), they aren’t as commonly sold in mattress companies in Singapore. Some companies market their latex mattress as natural even if fillers are included in the natural latex, so it’s best to ask questions.

Blended latex mattresses are a mix of natural and synthetic latex. The percentages do differ from brand to brand, although most comprise a higher percentage of synthetic latex.

Synthetic latex is a more economical option, and they are engineered from a bunch of petrochemicals to feel like natural latex. You do enjoy similar advantages as natural latex, although in terms of comfort level, it is stiffer.

Individual Pocket Spring (or Pocket Coil)

Image courtesy of Sleep Tech Magazine

Pocket spring mattresses are made up of metal springs, individually wrapped inside fabric “pockets”. These are placed near the top of the mattress, with foam (memory foam or latex foam) over them to offer support and comfort. The more coils there are, the more support it gives, but it’s also important to pay attention to the foam composition when it comes to comfort.

Because each spring is not connected, motion transfer is also reduced, although not as much as memory foam. This can also mean that some parts of a pocket spring mattress can age faster than others, depending on where you sleep. Rotating your bed regularly can help to mitigate this problem.

Innerspring Coil or Open Coil

One of the cheaper options out there, these mattresses are traditional types with inner coils that are interconnected. The technology is somewhat outdated and superseded by pocket springs. Still, it’s an option to consider if budget is a concern.

Innerspring mattresses offer a firm support, but they have limited contouring capabilities. They are also particularly bouncy (and squeaky) and are the worst when it comes to motion transfer—definitely not ideal for restless sleepers.

Hybrid

Image courtesy of Too Kind Studio

Hybrid mattresses are multi-layered, comprising different layers and materials to suit different needs. A large number of beds offered in Singapore are actually hybrids.

They are typically a combination of memory foam and latex, with an innerspring or pocket spring system. The idea behind hybrids is that they offer a bit more support than with a purely memory foam or latex foam bed.

Some come with a pillow top, which offers extra cushioning, while others can have a gel layer or cooling technology added for better temperature management.

Where to buy: mattress retailers

There are big name, well-established mattress brands in Singapore like Four Stars, Sealy, King Koil, Tempur, Simmons, Slumberland, Seahorse, Silent Night, Sleepy Night and Dunlopillo, just to name a few. Here’s a general overview of their mattress range, based on available information on their official sites:

Then there are smaller “online-only” retailers like Origin, Haylee, Baton, Woosa, and Noa that are known for their “mattress-in-a-box”—mattresses that are delivered to your home in a box.

The downside to them is that you can’t test them out first in a physical store. The upside? They offer a trial period (between 30 days to 100 days) where you can test them out for free and return them for a full refund if you find them unsuitable later on.

Testing out your mattress and firmness levels

Design: Provolk Architects

Try out the mattress by lying down for a good 5 to 15 mins if you are buying them from physical stores. Don’t be paiseh! If you are getting the mattress with your partner, make sure to test it out with him or her, as you both have different preferences.

Don’t choose a mattress firmness that is too different from your existing one to allow your body to adjust properly to a new comfort level. When it comes to firmness, most people prefer those in the medium firm or medium range for a good balance of comfort and support.

Softer beds offer more contour and pressure relief, ideal if you sleep on the side. They are also more suited if you weigh on the lighter side. Those on the heavier side can find it difficult to get up on a bed that is too soft.

Beds that are firmer are more suited for back or stomach sleepers and for people on the heavier side as there is no sinking feel. However, firmer beds may not feel too luxurious or comfortable.

Mattress dimensions

Design: Arche Interior

When buying mattresses, do pay attention to mattress dimensions since they will need to fit your space or your bed. Mattress sizes in Singapore differ from ones in Europe, which are also common here. Then there is IKEA, which has their own set of rules.

In general, these are the common sizes for mattresses in Singapore:

Single: 91cm x 190cm
Super Single: 107cm x 190cm
Queen: 152cm x 190cm
King: 182cm x 190cm

European mattress sizing are as follows:

Single: 90cm x 200cm
Double: 140cm x 200cm
Queen: 160cm x 200cm
King: 180cm x 200cm

If you are getting a mattress from IKEA, here are the dimensions to keep in mind:

Carpeting – Carpeting gives the stairway and extra dose of warmth and coziness. It can also help in reducing noise when people are going up and down. If you have kids, carpeting acts as an extra safety feature in case they fall. Two main carpet ideas to choose from: full carpeting or stair runners.

Full Carpeting  –  covers every inch of the stairway floor. It comes in handy if the stair flooring is not too appealing. If your stairs have a bit of wear and you don’t want to do a full remodel, full carpeting will cover the aging. On the downside, a full carpet is harder and more expensive to install. Talk about the costs with your contractor before you begin.

Carpet Runners – leave the edges of the stairs visible. Runners are ideal when you don’t want to fully cover your beautiful stairway. Runners will add some warmth without hiding the flooring. Runners are easier and cheaper to install. If you are handy with home improvement projects you can even install the runner yourself. Most homeowners opt for boldly patterned runners to add detail and texture to an otherwise neutral space. Find a unique pattern that blends in with the surrounding décor but still draws the eyes towards the staircase. You can also opt for neutral non-patterned carpeting if you want a plain minimalist style. This is also where you can add some interest with texture.

Painted Surfaces

If you don’t want to cover your stairway but don’t want to leave it plain either, try your hand at illusions. With some creativity and a pro’s help, you can transform your plain stairway into anything you want. One popular trick is to create a runner illusion. The stairs are painted such that they look like they have a carpet runner on them. You can also go full artsy and create a movie or nature scene on the stairway. This can be especially handy for long staircases as the art provides a distraction from the long journey up.

It also influences the overall stairway and space decor. There as many ideas for the railing as there are for the stairway flooring. They range from fun and unique nautical rope railings to clean contemporary glass and steel rails with dozens of other great stairs railing ideas in between. Depending on the style and type of railing, there are several important components of a stairway rail. Mixing and matching among these components can produce a wide variety of unique styles.

Spindles/Balusters/Handrail

The spindles or balusters take up most of the space. These are the series of rods or columns extending from the top rail (another component) to the bottom rail (yet another component). The top rail is also called the handrail, an obvious reference to its role as the main hand support when going up or down the stairs.

Styles & Designs

In traditional and country designs, wooden spindles are common. The spindles can either be plain square, shaped into a descending spiral or have tapered ends. The advantage of wooden handrails is that they feel warm to the touch. Additionally, they wear well, getting smoother with use.In industrial and contemporary decors, you are more likely to find metal – usually steel or iron – spindles. These come in a wide variety of styles from plain rods to intricate designs that combine different shapes and patterns. In modern homes, the metal rods are made very thin and usually run parallel to the handrail rather than up-down. This creates a minimalist barely-there look. For an even cleaner look, you can eschew spindles and use solid glass instead. But it will cost you a bundle. The top and bottom rails provide an opportunity to complement the style of the balusters. A common strategy is to use metal spindles and wooden top and bottom rails. Most modern stairway ideas leave out the bottom rail to avoid a light-blocking stairway.Other stairs handrail ideas include smooth aluminum (usually combined with solid glass railing), a rounded metal rail (combined with metal spindles) and all-glass designs where there is no distinct handrail. Some stairway designs also add a unique style to the newels – the handrail supporting posts at the start and end of the stairway. For instance, the newels may consist of thick distinctive wooden pillars with ornate patterns. They can also be simple metal rods that don’t stand out much from the rest of the supporting posts along the length of the stairway.

Lighting

Like most other components of a stairway, the lighting has both aesthetic and functional roles. Without proper illumination, going up and down the stairs can be a safety hazard especially for children and the elderly.

The traditional overhead light is often not possible either because there is another staircase above or the ceiling is too high. If you are looking for a way to flood the entire staircase with light, install a fixture on the wall of the stairway landing. Make sure it is bright enough to extend up to the top or bottom of the stairs.

A more common strategy is using recessed lights. You can install recessed lights along the wall of the stairway. Stagger the lights in a way that lights up each tread properly. You can also have a continuous LED strip recessed along the wall to ensure each spot on the stairs is illuminated.

Another place to locate LED strips is under the trend. This is possible only in a certain stairway designs such as floating stair treads or where the tread extends slightly over the riser. The underside lighting is a great way to illuminate the stairway without casting harsh light into people’s eyes when going up or down the stairs. It also adds an eye-catching style to the staircase.

If you are going for the wow factor, there are a few stairs lighting ideas to borrow from. A unique one is to use multicolored LED strips that light up in different hues up the stairway. But be careful with this one as it can create a gaudy nightclub feel.

If you have an accessible ceiling above the stairway, add a series of hanging lights, making sure they are low enough to provide enough lighting.

Making The Most Of Stairway Design Ideas

Staircases serve as the home’s spine. They not only connect rooms and stories within a house, but they are frequently the first space a visitor encounters at the entryway. As a result, stairs must serve two functions: they must be both welcoming and useful.

With such an elevated place within the home, staircases demand just as much decorative thought and polish as the rest of the house. Staircases, for example, are perfect places for trendy wallpaper or a splash of unexpected color. Unique lighting, an artsy collection, and eye-catching runners are other excellent ways to bring life to a staircase. Finally, hand-forged iron or bespoke fretwork banisters can transform steps into sculptural works of art.

Staircases, although certainly providing a vital functional purpose, have the power to elevate an entire property. Stairs may be so much more than just a way of getting from point A to point B. We’ve highlighted distinctive stairs that prove it, from interlocking treads to stunning corkscrews. So, whether you’re planning a redesign and need some stunning stair design ideas for your home, or you enjoy admiring architectural marvels, these steps will get you there.

Stairway Dimensions

When upgrading or building a home, critical measures such as standard stairway width, riser height, and tread depth are not left to chance. Staircase dimensions are regulated by common practice and building code, which is frequently influenced by commonly accepted norms. These guidelines are intended to make staircases as safe as possible. Thus, they should never be disregarded or ignored.

At the same time, because most measures are accompanied by minimums or maximums, staircase code measurements allow for considerable flexibility. The conventional stair width is a classic example. Stairs must be three feet wide or wider, according to staircase code. You can widen the steps as much as you want as long as the three-foot width criteria is met.

Bonus Tips

Some good stairway design ideas for small spaces include using thin metal spindles or combining glass with metal. This leaves the room still airy and bright.Don’t forget to make good use of the space below the staircase.Make sure you follow local code on safety when deciding the stairway design. Your contractor can help you with this. The stairway is not just about rails and spindles. If there is a wall along the staircase, it is a great place to add family photographs and art. They provide a nice distraction from the arduous journey up.Don’t forget to marry the staircase design with the décor of the space around it. As much as you need to make the stairway a unique piece of décor on its own, it also needs to blend in smoothly with the surrounding space. Use color, patterns, and materials to provide a nice blending and transition from the stairway to the room it leads into.

What are Frameless Glass Shower Doors?

Frameless glass shower doors as just that–glass shower doors without framing. Traditional framed glass shower doors make use of metal, rubber or some other material to secure the glass along the edges. The result is a bulky look that can become an eyesore especially for small bathrooms.

A frameless shower door does away with the framing, creating a cleaner and less cluttered look. Many homeowners will also agree that a frameless shower door is less of a hassle to clean and maintain. A quick wipe is enough to get it looking sparkling clean.

But the beauty and airiness of frameless glass shower doors comes with a number of downsides. For one, the cost of a frameless shower door is much higher than that of framed doors. This is due to the increased complexity to design and install frameless glass shower doors. Secondly, these doors come with a higher risk of leaking water into other areas of the bathroom. Proper design is essential in preventing this.

With good installation and proper maintenance, a frameless glass shower door is one of the best bathroom upgrades you can make. It leaves your bathroom feeling airier, brighter and bigger.

Key Considerations When Buying a Frameless Shower Door

If you have decided to go ahead with a frameless shower door, there are some essential considerations to keep in mind as you look for the right one.

1. Fully Frameless Glass vs. Semi-Frameless Glass

One of the biggest frustrations when it comes to buying a frameless glass shower door is the lack of standards. One seller will define a frameless shower door in a different way from another and a third one will choose yet another definition. Honestly, it can be pretty confusing to a lot of homeowners.

Two terms you will come across are fully frameless and semi-frameless. Some shower doors make use of long U channels at the bottom or sides of the door to secure it. While some sellers will still say this is a frameless door the more accurate term agreed on by many in the industry is semi-frameless. Other frameless shower glass doors use clamps to secure the glass door to the wall or a fixed glass panel. This is what many refer to as a fully frameless shower door.

When you go shopping ask whether the door uses U channels or clamps (sometimes called clips). Clamps generally have a more minimalist look compared to U channels.

WOOD ACCENT

Fine Focus Photography

Wood accents add warmth to this gorgeous bath. That frameless shower is huge!

2. Type of Hardware

Another very important issue is the type of hardware used on the door. This refers to the material used in the U channel (for semi-frameless glass doors) and in the clamps (for fully frameless glass doors) as well as any other component including the hinges.

You will find terms like brass construction, aluminum construction and anodized construction. If possible, always go for brass hardware. Shower frameless glass doors are quite heavy, sometimes weighing up to 200 lbs. The hardware used must be able to bear all that weight safely and ensure structural integrity. Brass is much better at this than aluminum and many other materials you encounter.

You can then choose to have the brass components coated in a finishing of your liking. Common finishes include chrome, oil rubbed bronze and brushed nickel.

One tip that can help you determine that you are buying the right hardware is to ask for part numbers. Look up the part numbers online to find original manufacturer information. This will tell you exactly what materials are used and safe weight tolerances as stated by the manufacturer.

NATURAL FEEL

Frameless Glass Shower Doors - Sebring Design Build

Cornerstone Architects

Natural lighting and natural materials in this bathroom creates a relaxing and functional space.

3. Type of Hinges

For the door to open and close, it must be fitted with a hinge. Installing a hinge on a glass door and a frameless one at that, is an entirely different kettle of fish from installing a hinge on a normal door. The hinge must be able to support the weight of the door and allow it to turn smoothly without any problem.

There are three types of hinges you can use for your frameless shower door: door-to-wall hinges, pivot hinges and glass-to-glass hinges. Ask your contractor for recommendation on which is best in your situation. Each hinge comes with its own benefits and complications.

For example, a glass-to-glass hinge is more problematic to install compared to a glass-to-wall hinge. A pivot hinge has the advantage of allowing the shower door to open 180 degrees in either direction.

CURBLESS

Frameless Glass Shower Doors - Sebring Design Build

VB Inc.

This bathroom definitely has a more masculine feel. Love the sealed concrete floor.

4. Type and Thickness of Glass

Lacking in framing, frameless shower doors must be thicker to achieve proper support and structural integrity. There are two sizes that are recommended: 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch. Anything thinner than this and your shower door will keep wobbling whenever you open or close it. Note that 1/2 inch frameless shower doors cost more than 3/8 ones.

In addition to the thickness, you also need to choose the type of glass you prefer. This is mostly a matter of aesthetics and each seller stocks different variations, some with proprietary names. Some of the options you will come across include clear glass, frosted glass and rain glass. One thing they all have in common–they are all tempered glass. Tempered glass is as a result of a special manufacturing process that makes it stronger and changes how it breaks. In case of breakage, it fragments into numerous small chunks that are not as hazardous as normal glass.

Reasons To Go For Frameless Glass Shower Doors

1. Frameless shower doors provide the appearance of a larger bathroom.

Glass has a natural propensity to make a space appear and feel larger. Frameless shower doors are composed of durable glass with thicknesses ranging from 3/8” to 1/2”.

Because thicker glass bends less, it does not need to be supported by a frame.

It also expands the appearance of even the smallest bathroom. Shower door layouts in frameless styles can be adapted to fit bathrooms of any size.

2. Elegant designs are possible with glass doors.

Frameless showers have a seamless appearance because they use almost no metal. The glass is attached to the wall directly with discreet and straightforward hardware. Many one-of-a-kind designs feature glass on numerous or all sides for an ultramodern look.

3. Clear glass keeps your bathroom feeling open and airy.

Because frameless glass shower doors enable you to see through them, they do not operate as a visual barrier similar to a shower curtain or framed door would.

This creates a more open and airy feeling in your bathroom, making it appear larger, brighter, and less confining.

4. Frameless glass doors let in natural light.

Using natural light in the bathroom has various advantages—a good source of vitamin D, flawless cosmetic application, hair removal, and higher self-esteem. Shaving your legs behind a dark shower curtain or squinting under fluorescent lights is never a brilliant idea. When it comes to light, frameless glass shower doors ensure that you have plenty of it.

5. Display beautiful tile designs

The beauty of your shower is overshadowed by opaque doors that give the impression that a giant box is sitting in your bathroom. This takes away from the natural feel and grandeur of your bathroom decor. Frameless glass shower doors enable greater aesthetic enjoyment by providing a clearer view of the tile pattern, color, and embellishments.

6. Provides a spa-like environment

Bathroom renovations provide an excellent return on investment, both financially and personally. The use of frameless glass shower doors adds a sense of calm and transparency to the space.

Note About Accessories

Make sure to ask the seller what kind of accessories come with the door and which ones you can add on your own. All shower doors come with a door handle while others also provide a towel bar. Other accessories you may want to include would be a threshold to prevent leakage, towel bar/handle combos and recommended glass cleaner.

1.  Put Aside Money for the Unexpected

Planning your budget is a natural first step for any big project plans. But when factoring your budget, don’t just add up the costs of your new materials and labor and call it a day. There are plenty of other expenses you’ll need to consider as well. This is especially the case when it comes to unexpected expenses.

The worst feeling is when you are halfway through your remodeling project and you are suddenly hit with a surprise cost. Maybe you lifted up the sink to find a huge leak, and you’ll need to call in the emergency plumbers. Or perhaps there is some mold you need to get rid of before your true remodeling plans can begin. All of this costs a little extra cash, and you’ll be grateful to have some savings set aside for emergency situations like this.

2. Order Your Materials Ahead of Time

It can take a while to decide what kind of materials, surfaces, products, and colors you want your new bathroom to consist of. But once you do decide, you should start ordering everything as early as you can.

Everything from the new sink faucets to the bathroom floor tile should be ordered in advance. Don’t wait until you set your project start date to order the materials. They should already be paid for and on their way to you before you even begin with your bathroom remodeling project.

If something is missing in the middle of your renovation, it will halt the entire process, which may mean that your contractors have to work longer than planned, costing you more money up front.

3. Increased Quality

Because everything from the cabinetry to the flooring is custom; quality is assured. In other words, you get full value for your money. Your bathroom is likely to last longer and require less maintenance over time.  Not only can you choose custom parts, but you can ensure that each and every new material is made to your standards. Just remember to stay true to your budget!

4. Specific Needs

Each home has unique needs that a generic bathroom cannot meet. For example, there may be someone with a disability and requires special fittings in the bathroom. There may be an elderly person who would benefit from a customized shower design. There may be children whose safety must be taken into account when designing the bathroom.

All these needs can only be fulfilled by a custom bathroom.

5. A Place that Makes You Happy

In the end, the purpose of a home is not just to provide a roof over our heads. It is also a personal sanctuary where you can relax and be yourself. A bathroom is even more personal in nature. Nothing beats a place that makes you happy and this is what a custom bathroom will make you feel. You get the colors you want, the materials you want, the atmosphere you desire; it is simply the perfect bathroom.

3. Prepare for Demolition

In order for the new products to come in, the old products must first go out. Demolition is the first step to clearing out your bathroom in order to make way for your new plans. And to be honest, the demolition process is usually one of the fastest and easiest parts of the whole project. But there are still a couple of things you should keep in mind:

● Demolition makes a lot of noise and it would be a good idea to remove all family members and pets from the home during this time.

● Demolition can cause dust and other particles to float in the air for quite some time, so if you are going to remain in the home, you should invest in a mask and some eye protection.

● It’s vital that all of your plumbing and electricity hookups are disconnected before you begin removing appliances.

What do you do if you aren’t removing everything from the bathroom? Perhaps you want to keep your existing shower or sink. You can leave it in the room, but make sure to protect it with padding and plywood so it stays unscathed during the process.

4. Don’t Make New Changes

Once the project has begun, it is really difficult to make any sudden changes. Your budget has been set, your materials have been ordered, and your contractors have been hired. To make a change order in the middle of all the building can really take precious time and money away from everyone involved, especially yourself.

This is especially true if you ask for changes that totally stray away from your original plans and designs. This is just asking to increase costs and make things more difficult for your remodeling team.

5. Upgrade the Essentials

Bathroom remodels usually focus on the visual aspects of the room that you are looking forward to upgrading. It’s exciting to pick out new cabinets, countertops, tiling, and bathtubs. Everything can be totally refreshed and refurbished to create a new bathroom look. But you can’t forget about the essential, unseen things.

Benefits of Custom Bathrooms

1. The Perfect Design

You have your dream bathroom in mind. Maybe you want quartz floors, a granite tub, a rainfall shower and so on. A custom bathroom delivers the perfect design, ensuring you get exactly what you desire. Whether you wanted a romantic double tub, a private spa area, a disability access bathroom, a breathtaking view of the outdoors, you can get it all.

In the end, you will be happier and more satisfied with the bathroom for a long time to come. Even more importantly, you will get a bathroom that fits your unique needs.

2. Maximize Space

In many homes, the bathroom is usually one of the smallest rooms in the house. Generic designs tend to under utilize the small space available, leaving dead spaces that could have been put to better use. With a custom bathroom, you can make efficient use of the space available, be it big or small.

Take it a step further with floating shelves and cabinets to maximize your floor space. This is a good opportunity to invest in hidden storage so you can remain organized yet un-cluttered.

Few Things To Keep in Mind

It does not have to be big. Despite what the magazines tell you, a custom bathroom does not have to be a monstrous room set within an expansive mansion. You can turn your small ordinary bathroom into a luxurious custom space. In the same breath, it does not have to be expensive. It is true that custom bathroom designs will cost more than a generic one, but they do not have to be ridiculously expensive. There are plenty of custom bathrooms designs that can be achieved on a budget.Insist on the best. For best results, go for high quality items. Whether it is the flooring, the cabinets or the lighting, opt for the highest quality. They will last longer and make your bathroom look better.Be bold. Before you even think about the costs involved, determine what kind of bathroom you want. Do not hold back. Whether you want opulent and luxurious, clean and urban or warm and spacious, go for it. Once you decide what you want, it becomes easier to plan around it. You can even work with the contractor to find areas where you can cut the costs down to your budget.Understand what you are getting into. Too often, homeowners will desire a luxury bathroom without contemplating issues like maintenance and cleaning. Make sure you understand exactly what you are getting. Will the bathroom require special care? What kind of maintenance is required? Ask a lot of such questions before proceeding.

dvantages Of Custom Bathrooms

Is your bathroom conducive for rest, ritual, and relaxation? It ought to. A bathroom redesign may boost your home’s happiness and turn your everyday routine into something you look forward to.

Did you know that taking an hour-long bath can lower your risk of having a heart attack, improve your blood sugar control, and even protect you from illnesses and infections? A warm soak can also burn the same number of calories as a 30-minute stroll! These are only some of the benefits that researchers are discovering as they learn more about the wealth of health benefits that soaking baths provide. Many other self-care rituals, including aromatherapy, gua sha, and body masks, are derived from morning and bedtime routines.

Do you have the same rejuvenating energy when you think of your bathroom? If not, it may be time for a new design. A master bathroom redesign allows you to add bespoke features and materials to your bathroom that are tailored to your tastes and budget.

A custom bathroom can be used as an in-home therapeutic retreat with the right design ideas. However, for far too many homeowners, the master bathroom is nothing more than a source of frustration. A gloomy atmosphere is created by unsightly mildew, old appearances, and insufficient lighting. It’s no surprise that the majority of homeowners remodel their bathrooms because they dislike the area. A well-designed bathroom is vital not only for the value of your home but also for your entire well-being.

So go ahead and envision a dream that you can transform into a reality. It can be challenging to narrow down your style and look with many gorgeous bathroom renovation samples available. Cabinets, worktops, sinks, flooring, toilets, lighting, and bathtubs or showers are all part of a bathroom redesign.

Why Go Dark?

Dark cabinets will introduce a certain richness and depth that lighter colors just cannot achieve. The color invites you to linger, be calm, and ponder. While it may not trigger the exuberant feeling you get in a white-cabinet kitchen, it brings about a calm excitement.

The calmness and depth of dark colors work perfectly for luxury-themed kitchens. However, it is important to note that dark kitchen themes require considerably more expertise and care to pull off. If you are not sure of your mix and matching abilities, you are better off seeking advice from an interior decorating expert. When matched with the right colors and textures, dark cabinets create a stunning luxe look no one can help but fall in love with.

Choosing the Right Color

You already know you want dark kitchen cabinets. But what shade should it be brown? Most cabinet sellers will feature dozens, if not hundreds, of dark shades ranging from tan to ash grey to pitch black.

The first step is to find out what dark varieties your preferred cabinet vendor has. Chances are that they have dark extremes of each color. Decide what dark shade will work best for your kitchen. When most people think about dark kitchen cabinets, they automatically see the color black or grey. But you can get dark versions of any color, apart from white of course. You can choose to go with black, dark red, dark green, dark brown and so on.

If you are going for a super luxurious look, black and grey will work best. If you are looking for something to match brown flooring, dark brown or red cabinets might fit in perfectly. If you want a unique look, try unusual colors such as dark green. If you want a bit of the excitement of bright colors combined with the calm of dark shades, try dark yellow (the color of olives).

The most important thing is figuring out what will work well with other aspects of your kitchen and the final look you are aiming for. This is because, while all dark shades will have a similar calming and in-depth character, each dark shade also has its own unique impact on the look and feel of the kitchen. Mahogany colored cabinets (a dark shade of red) will feel quite different from Sangria cabinets (a deep shade of purple).

Compare, compare, and keep comparing until you find something that is perfect for your kitchen.

Mixing and Matching

The most crucial part of choosing dark kitchen cabinets is knowing how to mix and match them with other colors and textures. This is what will determine how good the kitchen looks in the end. Here are a few mix and match tips you will find helpful as you consider installing dark kitchen cabinets.

Balance the dark shades with lighter colors. Unless you want a Gothic kitchen, too much dark can be depressing. Balance out the dark shade you have chosen with some lighter hues. One common combination, especially for luxury themed kitchens, is black and white. Most dark shades also go well with white. You can also include aspects of other lighter colors such as a yellow backsplash, brown flooring or a red accent wall.Make sure there is plenty of natural light coming in. If you are not careful, dark shades can create the perception of a much smaller room and can be depressing. To counter this, check that you have a lot of natural light coming in. At night, have enough lighting to keep the place looking bright and airy.Match with other dark elements. While dark cabinets will pop out beautifully against a light colored wall, they also look great when matched with dark flooring or other dark colored elements in the kitchen. This will prevent the cabinets from looking like the sad loner in the room. You can match them with dark flooring, a dark accent wall or a dark countertop.

As we mentioned, mixing and matching dark shades with other elements is a bit trickier than if you had light colored cabinets to work with. If you are not comfortable with your capabilities, get some help from an expert.

Here are some ideas for dark kitchen cabinets you can use in your renovation process. Find the style that best suits your kitchen and either borrow it or tweak it to perfection.

Your Dream Kitchen

Do you always dream of a dark-themed kitchen, but do not know where to start? Well, now you have some ideas to work with. Dark kitchen cabinets can create the theme you want for the kitchen. Of course, it all depends on how well you match them up to other elements in the room. We have provided tips for mix and matching above.

With so many styles and shades of dark kitchen cabinets to choose from, it can be confusing knowing what to go for. If you need any help buying or installing dark kitchen cabinets, feel free to reach out for helpful tips from us.

Reasons To Go For Dark Kitchen Cabinets

1) Scratches, dings, and stains are readily concealed.

If your kitchen is a busy hub in your house, black cabinetry may be the best option. Dark colors will disguise daily wear and tear better than white cabinets for households with children and pets and those who cook and entertain frequently.

2) A wide range of design options.

Lighter-colored cabinets are frequently used to open up space and create a lovely yet subtle kitchen. Dark cabinets, on the other hand, serve as a natural focal point. Create design interest by combining light and dark cabinetry, and incorporate color with lighting, flooring, and accessories to give the kitchen a distinct look.

3) A sense of luxury.

Dark cabinets lend depth, richness, and a sense of luxury to the finishes of a kitchen. Dark cabinets, as opposed to white cabinets, can provide a more personal environment and formal elegance in the kitchen.

4) Contrasting styles.

Cabinets in dark colors are bold. They may turn a boring, traditional kitchen into a colorful and inviting environment where your friends and family will happily meet. The room becomes more dynamic and playful when you use high-contrast colors, such as a two-tone design with white upper cabinets and dark base cabinets. Homeowners can incorporate more vibrant colors into their decor and accent pieces.

5) Comfortable and welcoming.

Dark shaker kitchen cabinets with a black and dark grey finish may create a friendly and cozy kitchen ambiance.

6) It’s ideal for large kitchens.

In a large kitchen, light-colored cabinets can feel dull and institutional. Dark cabinets will warm up the space and allow you to incorporate various decor and accent items for an eclectic aesthetic. Lighting, flooring, and art with contrasting colors will add bursts of color to complement the dark cabinets.

7) Numerous color options.

Dark cabinets are available in various wood finishes, including black, grey, blue, purple, green, red, and dark brown. In terms of dark paint and stain hues, the sky is the limit.

Murphy Beds Dimensions & Design Ideas

Sebring Design Build

New Murphy bed design ideas and a good variety of Murphy beds dimensions have introduced so many new opportunities for multi-purpose rooms.  There are so many creative ways to re-introduce Murphy beds back into the life of the modern home.

Believe it or not, Murphy Beds have been around for over a century. They were originally invented by William Lawrence Murphy. Back in the roaring ‘20’s, they were highly advertised by hotels as a symbol of luxury and wealth. Eventually they dropped in the ranks of popularity and became treated as an old afterthought. These space-saving beds once hailed as a convenient and sophisticated addition to any home, quickly became a relic of the past. But there’s good news . . .

Murphy beds are back! They have quickly made a comeback as they can provide an affordable and alternative way to save space in a room without having to rebuild.  We’ve come a long way from the 1920’s. You can design and build a Murphy bed in a variety of ways to suit the needs of your room and living requirements. For example, do you have two small children at home? Build them Murphy bunk beds! Need more storage space that you can hide away when you need to? Consider Murphy cabinet beds.

Follow our guide and the images below to get your creative juices flowing. Since Murphy beds haven’t truly been a fashion trend since almost 100 years ago, there may be plenty of new information for you to get your hands on. Homeowners are finding these beds more and more useful for rooms that they wish to redesign into an office space, living room, or guest room. These beds are flexible, classy, and now, modern. Take a look at these ideas that can inspire a new definition of “modern classic”.

What Are Murphy Beds, and Are Murphy Beds Comfortable?

Imagine if you could hang your bed up on the wall after you are done using it to preserve space in your room. With a Murphy bed, you can do exactly that.

A Murphy bed is usually mounted on a wall or hinged to a support system on the wall, so that it can be folded back into a cupboard, closet, or hidden space. The underside of the bed can be built to have cabinets or cubby space, making it look like a natural embellishment to the wall itself.

Murphy beds can be built to be extremely comfortable. There are a variety of ways to incorporate a comfortable mattress into the design of a multi-purpose bed. Murphy beds sofa combination ideas have been emerging as a new trend to get even more use out of one piece of furniture.

A Murphy bed can be folded up to become a sofa when not in use for sleeping. This can be a great addition to a den or a fun basement. Investing in a Murphy beds sofa combination can be affordable and easy to construct. This is a great alternative to investing in a remodeling project for your entire room or home!

It is recommended by specialists to use special mattress toppers help to relieve back aches and pains.

Murphy Bunk Beds

With a bed that stacks on top of itself, how can it be possible to transform a bunk bed into a Murphy style?  Well, there are a variety of options available to give your Murphy bunk beds the ideal function. A popular idea is to mount them as separate units so that you can use both or just one bed at a time. When they are folded into the wall, they have very little depth and dimension, making it easy to navigate your space in the room. They can be used as cabinets or functional wall decorations when not in use, and the ladder can tuck neatly behind them.

Murphy Cabinet Beds

Murphy cabinet beds are another favored choice by our clients. This adds even more functionality to an already multi-purpose piece. This can easily become the cornerstone of your room through use and utility.  A Murphy cabinet bed can be a full-sized bed that folds back to provide plenty of deep cabinet space. It can appear as a wide dresser or as an array of cabinets mounted on the wall for you to use. You can store towels, clothing, toys, sheets, and extra items in the cabinets and shelf spaces provided by the folded Murphy bed.

Horizontal Murphy Beds

The classic Murphy bed style is one that folds vertically, allowing you to pull the head or foot of the bed down when you are ready to go to sleep. However, horizontal Murphy beds are a viable option to conserve space and add a different kind of dimension to your home.

Horizontal Murphy beds fold in at the side, rather than at the top or bottom. This is a great idea to transform into cabinetry, shelf space, or even a sofa when not in use. There is an advantage in using the bed’s width over its height when planning space to mount it into a Murphy style.

Always take measurements in your hallways, doorways, and any entrances that the Murphy bed or cabinetry may pass through.  Also consider the headroom in your hallways and stairwells to make sure that it is easy for you to move these items through.  Clear your home of any other furniture or items that may get in the way.

Relax in Your New Tub: 35 Freestanding Bath Tub Ideas

Sebring Design Build

If you are considering a bathroom remodel; changing the bathtub (or introducing one) is one of the best ways to create a fresh look and change the feel and style of the bathroom. Depending on your budget, needs, and décor preferences, there are different types of bathtubs you can get. One of the most popular is the freestanding tub.

As the name suggests, freestanding tubs are designed to stand on their own without any attachment to the floor or walls. They are not built into the floor like sunken tubs nor are they set into the wall. A freestanding tub is great if you are looking to give your bathroom a spacious and luxurious feel.

Faucets for freestanding bathtubs can be attached to the adjacent wall or on the tub itself. The tub may also come with additional features depending on the price and it use. Additionally, you can choose from different sizes depending on your needs. For instance, a small freestanding tub is great if you are alone but you would need a wider tub if you enjoy your baths as a couple.

Materials Used

Materials used in freestanding bathtubs are generally similar to those used in other tubs. Centuries ago, they used material like stone and clay to fashion bathtubs. In the modern times, fiberglass and acrylic are two of the most commonly used materials. Here is a breakdown of the different materials used and their unique characteristics.

Fiberglass – fiberglass tubs are popular because of their affordability. The material is more budget-friendly than other alternatives including copper, cast iron and brass. It is also lightweight and can be repaired when damaged instead of replacing the entire tub. The biggest downside is poor durability and an easy to scratch surface.Acrylic – this is another affordable and lightweight tub option. In fact, acrylic tubs have fiberglass as a major component. Like fiberglass, it can scratch easily and does not last very long.Ceramic Tile – this is another good option if you are looking for a budget friendly freestanding tub. One big advantage of ceramic tile tubs is that they can be made onsite. This means that you can get a highly customized design with whatever size you desire. On the downside, ceramic tile tubs require a lot of maintenance work and can be a tad unpleasant on your bare skin.Cast Iron – Cast iron tubs could potentially last forever. The molded iron is finished on the outside with enamel. The tub is hard and study, with the exterior extremely resistant to scratches and any kind of damage. On the downside, cast iron tubs are difficult to move because of their weight and can also carry a hefty price tag.Porcelain on Steel – this type of tub consists of a sheet of steel combined with a layer of porcelain enamel. It is a low-cost but durable material. It is also easy to clean.Natural Stone – natural stone freestanding tubs are, as you would expect, quite expensive. They are made from a variety of materials such as marble, sandstone, basalt or granite. Natural stone bathtubs are great if you are going for a luxurious spa look in your bathroom.Copper – Copper carries with it a warm aesthetic while also creating a luxurious décor. But the greatest benefit of copper tubs lie in their health benefits. Copper is naturally antimicrobial, helping keep your tub hygienic. Copper tubs come in a variety of finishes. Though expensive than fiberglass or acrylic tubs, they last very long while requiring minimal maintenance.Brass – brass is not a commonly used material for bathtubs, perhaps due to its high cost. The material is made by combining zinc and copper to form an extremely strong and durable metal. Since it does not rust or corrode, a brass tub will last for decades while still retaining its good looks. Like copper tubs, brass tubs are expensive but provide value for your money.Wood – Yes, you can get a bathtub made from wood. If you are going for an ultra luxurious warm décor, this is an excellent choice. Of course, the wood has to be treated to ensure that it is completely waterproof.

Absolutely stunning!

Choosing among all these materials can be a little bit challenging. The most important factor to consider is your budget. For low to mid-range budgets, good options include acrylic, ceramic, porcelain and fiberglass. For bigger budgets, consider materials like wood, brass, copper or cast iron.

Also consider your décor needs. Wood and copper tubs tend to create a warm homely feel. Cast iron and natural stone can be used for a spa décor or an industrial style bathroom. If you are going for simple urban contemporary, we recommend fiberglass, acrylic, ceramic or porcelain.

Size and Design

Freestanding bathtubs come in varying designs. Pedestal bathtubs come with a slightly raised design to create a unique look. freestanding soaker tubs, meant for relaxing, are common in Japan. They are deep and feature a slightly sloped design. Get a freestanding soaking tub if you want something to soak in for hours. If you enjoy baths as a couple, get an extra wide and extra deep bathtub for ultimate comfort.

Take a look at our remodeling and design portfolio for other ideas for your bathroom remodeling project.

The most important thing is to research extensively. Determine what your needs are, what budget you can work with and the best source of freestanding tubs (at your local store or online). In terms of size, make sure you measure the floor area and entry doors before buying.

The Difference Between A Freestanding Bath Tub And A Built-In Bath

Freestanding baths have long been seen as the ultimate romantic statement: the large claw-foot tubs of yesteryear can accommodate two people simultaneously (cue the scented candles and bath oil). However, there have been some complaints: they are more challenging to clean around, and they do not keep the bathwater hot for very long. However, the alternative, built-in bathtubs, has a negative reputation for being outmoded and less luxurious.

What is the distinction between a freestanding and a built-in bath? When it comes to bathtubs, there are two basic types to consider: built-in baths, which are typically installed in an alcove with walls on three sides, and freestanding baths, which give you more flexibility in where you place it in the room (though most freestanding tubs are installed close to a wall—and existing plumbing). The claw-foot tub is a well-known freestanding alternative that stands on four feet, unlike some modern freestanding bathtubs that sit flush on the ground or on a pedestal. (Historically, claw-foot baths had a Victorian-style ball and claw design, although today, any tub with feet is commonly referred to as a claw-foot.)

Both freestanding and built-in tubs are available in a variety of dimensions—length, breadth, and depth—and if you enjoy taking baths, you’ll want a tub that fits your body, so test-drive tubs in the showroom by jumping in and lying down.

What is the point of having a freestanding bath?  There is no situation where a freestanding tub is required; most individuals select freestanding baths to make a statement or achieve a vintage aesthetic. If it’s the style you’re looking for, freestanding models have a greater range of options.

However, there is more discretion regarding where the tub is placed—as long as piping is nearby. Consider positioning your tub near a window if you want to look out the window while you soak.

What’s Your Style of Freestanding Tub?

Whether you are going for a chic look, a vintage style, an industrial feel, or a contemporary décor, there is a perfect freestanding tub for you. Whether you are looking for something to relax in, to do some aromatherapy, or simply bathe, there are plenty of design and size options available.

A bathroom does not feel complete without a bathtub. If you have been relying on just your shower to wash the day’s grit and stress away, time to experience the magic of a freestanding bathtub. If your current tub is old and weary, time for an upgrade.

Leave us a message if you have any questions about installing a freestanding tub for your space.

7 Important Small-Space Lessons to Learn from Micro Apartments

Micro apartments, shoebox condos, tiny homes… Whatever you like to call them, they have one thing in common—a lack of square footage (they are typically less than 500 sqft). But as these micro homes below illustrate, a lack of space doesn’t mean you have to settle for less. If you are struggling with fitting everything in your small space, you might want to get a lesson or two on compact living from these micro apartments.

Lesson 1: Make full use of vertical space

Go full-height for wardrobes and cabinets. Incorporate storage in common ‘dead’ spaces like that area above the toilet or along the walkway. If you have an unusually tall ceiling, building a loft doubles up your living area.

In this one-bedroom condo (size: 495 sqft), a loft built using plywood serves as a guest room (it fits a queen-sized bed!) and a lounging area, with a safety barrier that doubles up as a side table.

Design by homeowner

» Read more about this home

Lesson 2: Rethink the home office

In small spaces, home offices and workspaces often take on secondary importance. But if remote working is in your future, it’s important to accommodate space for a conducive working environment even if you don’t have a lot of room to play with. Pro tip? Throw out common notions of what a home office should look like.

In this micro apartment (size: 409 sqft), a wall-mounted desk and a ‘floating’ bench were built at the end of the bed to serve as a workstation. It uses up space that would otherwise have gone unused, while the sleek lines, proper cable management system and the ‘floating’ designs reduce visual bulk and clutter. If the seat looks too uncomfortable for you, you could always include a ‘zaisu’ style chair that comes with a backrest.

Design: Monocot

Lesson 3: Think of convertibles

Furniture not cars, that is. Flexibility needs to be a big part of your small space and convertible furniture, one that can be transformed from something into another, is the epitome of flexibility and can be a huge plus for a micro home.

When it comes to micro apartments, no one knows them better than land-scarce Hong Kong. This Hong Kong apartment (size: 492 sqft) comes with a number of creative convertible furniture, including a drawer that can be converted into a dressing table and a platform storage in the living room that conceals a lift-up coffee table.

Design: Sim-Plex Design Studio

Lesson 4: Have spaces do double (or triple!) duty

When space is limited, make each zone perform more than a single function. A kitchen could also work as a home office. A living room could serve as an extra bedroom.

This “do it all” room of a small apartment (size: 463 sqft) fits in a living room, a home office, a bedroom, a walk-in wardrobe and a dining area. A staggered effect demarcates each zone while creating more seating room for guests, and a mobile table lends extra versatility to the use of space.

Design: Metre Architects

Lesson 5: Don’t neglect prep space in the kitchen

If you cook regularly, you will want to make sure you have a functional kitchen. One of the main issues we usually see in smaller kitchens is the absence of enough prep space. They tend to prioritise the hob and sink, while neglecting countertop space. And this becomes problematic, because a big bulk of cooking is in the prepping.

Learn from this small space dwelling (size: 500 sqft) that prioritises its prep space by extending its kitchen countertop all the way out into the living room. The prep counter also functions as a dining spot, so there’s no space wastage.

Design: Habit

Lesson 6: You don’t need to fill up every space

This might seem a bit counterintuitive, since you are asked to maximise your limited square footage. But having visual breathing room does help a small home feel larger and less claustrophobic.

Take for instance this avant-garde style home in Bukit Batok (size: 506 sqft), where the different elements of the home are concealed behind “cuboids” to minimise visual clutter. A minimal palette and clean walls create plenty of visual breathing room.

Design: Spaceedge

Lesson 7: Don’t be afraid to use colours

Neutrals may be the go-to hues for a small home, but if your personality is bigger than your square footage, you shouldn’t shy away from colours. You could add multi-hued accents to a neutral backdrop or stick to a bold monotone statement. Otherwise, take a leaf from this micro apartment:

This multi-coloured one-bedroom condominium (size: 441 sqft) feels like a burst of sunshine. To make things work, light pastel shades are used as a neutral backdrop here, while bold and fluorescent shades serve as an accent to prevent things from feeling too overwhelming.

Sleek Stainless Steel Countertop Ideas Guide

Featured Image: Carrie Wells

Go to most restaurants and commercial kitchens and chances are they are using stainless steel countertops. Their harsh and busy working environment requires a surface that can take a beating and still look good. Most importantly, they need a surface that maintains the highest hygiene standards. Stainless steel provides these benefits and much more. You can also enjoy these benefits at home at roughly the same costs you would incur with a granite, marble or quartz countertop.

If you are looking for a countertop that is tough, durable and looks good, try a stainless steel countertop. It brings chef-level style and functionality right into your kitchen.

Stainless Steel Withstands Almost Anything

There is a reason why steel countertops are a favorite among commercial establishments. They are tough beasts that can withstand almost anything. Unlike other countertop materials that are damaged by heat, you don’t have to worry about your hot pots and pans marring your smooth steel countertop. Oil, acid and wine spills are also nothing. Just wipe them off like nothing happened.

If you own heavy pots or appliances, your steel countertop can hold them without denting or chipping as long as it has been installed properly. The resilience of a stainless steel countertop is especially beneficial for busy kitchens. If you do a lot of cooking whether for your large family or frequent guests, consider investing in the hardy and hardwearing stainless countertop.

Countertops that Maintain Hygiene

In restaurants where cleanliness is paramount, they rely on stainless steel countertops to keep bacteria and germs away. One of the characteristics of steel metal countertops is that they are nonporous. This simply means that they do not allow liquids to seep through them. So harmful bacteria and mold have no place to thrive and hence there is little danger of food contamination. Considering that most food preparation is done on the countertop, using a steel countertop protects you and your family. This can be especially crucial if you have young children or an infant in your home.

FUNKY FARMHOUSE

Surround Architecture, Inc.

Breeze to Maintain

The nonporous nature of stainless steel countertops also make them really easy to maintain. Since liquids do not go beyond the surface, there is zero risk of staining. Anything that spills on the countertop can be quickly dealt with by a quick wipe. You don’t even need any harsh detergents or special chemicals to keep your countertop clean and shiny. Some mild detergent, vinegar or baking soda will do just fine.

If you are planning a kitchen renovation with a mind to create a less maintenance-intensive kitchen space, then a steel countertop should definitely be in your plans.  Again, this is one of the reasons restaurants love these countertops. In a busy kitchen with lots of cooking and serving to be done, you don’t want anything slowing you down.

Stylish Contemporary Look

Have you looked at pictures of kitchens with stainless steel countertops? Don’t they have a nice modern clean look them? If your kitchen décor is contemporary or you have a flair for clean minimalism, a steel countertop will fit right in. It creates a refreshing cleanliness and order to even the most cluttered spaces. I especially love how the metal surface reflects back light, resulting in an open feel and look. If you are wondering how to create the perception of space in your small kitchen, try a stainless steel countertop.

If it feels too cold or plain, try pairing it up with a textured or patterned backsplash. Brick-styled tile or mosaic glass backsplashes provide a nice contrast to the smooth countertop. But if you prefer a seamless continuity, you can opt for a similar stainless steel backsplash and then use the floor and wall cabinets to balance out the shiny metal.

Highly Durable

Your steel countertop will likely outlast a lot of other things in the house. Even though it will surfer some blemishes with time (see the drawbacks section), it tends to age well, developing a certain alluring patina. So even after years of use, it still looks good and works just as well.

It’s Green

If you are looking for an environmentally friendly countertop, we recommend stainless steel. Up to 60 percent of its content is recyclable meaning that it can still be useful even at the end of its life. You can even go a step further and look for countertops made with American-made steel. They usually have higher amounts of recyclable content.

Stainless Steel Countertop Cost

Stainless steel countertop pricing is roughly the same as that of marble or quartz. The cheapest you can get it is at $50 per square foot. On the higher side the average stainless countertop cost is around $150 per square foot. But the average cost in most places is between $60 and $95 per square foot.

Drawbacks of Stainless Steel Countertops

Before you get a steel countertop, there are some concerns and issues you should know.

They will scratch over time. Scratches are inevitable especially if you countertop has a glossy finish. Avoid cutting anything directly on the countertop surface and keep the heaviest pots away. They are susceptible to denting. This happens when you place really heavy pots or appliances on the countertop. To prevent denting, make sure you get your countertop professionally installed. The best steel countertops have a wood backing underneath to support the top sheet of metal. For glossy countertops, smudges are common and easily visible. You may have to keep wiping the countertop, which can be a bit frustrating if you have kids who keep touching it. Additionally, any small bits of particles such as dust or crumbs are more noticeable compared to other countertops. They tend to be noisy as they interact with pans, pots and cutlery. While the noise is not extreme, it takes some getting used to.They are not budget countertops. Being in the same price range as marble, stainless steel countertops are not cheap. If you are looking for a budget countertop, this is not it.

It is easy to see why many homeowners are interested: it’s durable, resilient and has a great style to boot.

[Cleaning Tips] How to Clean and Maintain Different Duvet Types

Interior Design: Earth Interior Design

Most people don’t know the duvet can be cleaned. In fact, washing the duvet is not as difficult as you imagined. Let us share the ways to wash different duvets and how to store them.

Cotton quilt

Cotton is the most traditional quilt component. The quilt is made of natural cotton fibre. It is thicker and is a commonly used quilt in winter. The cotton quilt cannot be washed with water. Washing with water will cause the cotton to clump, which is difficult to restore to its original shape, and its functionality will decline. Therefore, the correct way to clean is to bask it in the sun and lightly pat the quilt to remove the dust and maintain the bulkiness of the cotton, thereby maintaining its functionality to keep warm.

The cotton in the quilt has a strong moisture absorption ability, so you need to pay attention to moisture problems when storing it. In addition, it is not recommended to put heavy stuff above the quilt when storing, because excessive squeezing will make the cotton compact and lose its heat storage capacity.

Down duvet

The inner core of the duvet is made by animals down, mostly from geese or ducks. Down has higher warmth retention ability than cotton and other plant fibres. The three-dimensional structure of the down stores a lot of air, which can retain the heat emitted by humans and effectively keep the user warm. The quilt itself is also lighter.

The duvet can be washed in a machine or water, but it also needs to be cleaned in a gentle mode with neutral detergent, because acidic or alkaline detergents will damage the down fibre itself. After washing, it can be dried in a ventilated place and avoid exposure to the sun. If you want to clean it thoroughly, you can consider sending it to a dry cleaning every 5-7 months.

In order to maintain the permeability of the duvet, it is necessary to avoid using plastic or fibre duvet cover, so as to prevent the inner core of the duvet from being damp and mouldy and causing a peculiar smell. It should also be stored in a dry place.

Silk duvet

Silk duvet is another kind of animal protein fibre. It’s soft and permeable at the same time, which can be used during all seasons. So, silk is a premium material for producing duvet. Additionally, the production process of silk duvet does not contain any chemical materials or pesticides, so pure silk duvet with good quality is a natural and environmentally friendly product.

Silk duvets are difficult to clean. Like cotton quilts, they cannot be washed with water because they will clump and also cannot be exposed to the sun, which will make the fibres brittle. So, they can only be placed in a cool place for ventilation. For storage, in order not to deform the silk, the silk quilt cannot be squeezed in a vacuum and should not be pressed with heavy objects.

Wool duvet

The curling characteristic of wool makes the wool duvet contain a large amount of air, and slow down the heat transfer rate, so it can prevent the intrusion of cold air and able to maintain a high degree of warmth as well as being the most fire-resistant quilt.

Anyone who has woollen clothes would know that wool is not recommended to be washed, so if you wish to wash the wool duvet, you need to take it for dry cleaning. If you want to keep the duvet clean, you dry the duvet regularly in the evening or early morning for 1-2 hours for dehumidification and bactericidal effect. For storage, you need to put insect repellent items at the same time to prevent the wool from being infested.

Fibre quilt

A fibre quilt is actually made of man-made fibre. The advantage is that the maintenance is simpler than other animal and plant fibres. In addition to the condition that it is less likely to grow mould, it has a high elasticity so it will not shrink and the price is relatively low. However, it can only last for 2-3 years which is a much shorter lifespan than other well-maintained quilts. Since the chemical fibre is a plastic-type, the air permeability of the quilt is relatively poor.

Cleaning fibre quilt is simpler than other types of quilts. It can be washed directly by the washing machine at low speed or washed by hands with weak alkaline detergent to clean it more thoroughly. However, it is not recommended to hang it up during drying as the cohesion between fibres is not strong. If we hung it up, it may cause uneven thickness and lose its warmth retaining ability.
