Decorating with Mirrors

There are many places around your home you can add a mirror. An obvious place is the living area. A large wall mirror with a detailed frame can be just as elegant as an elaborate painting.

Other places include the hallway (along the wall or at the end), the bedroom, along the stairway and the entryway. You can even install a mirror outside on the porch or on a wall adjacent to the garden. The latter is an especially good idea for those with small gardens. The mirror creates a perception that the flowers have spread further than they actually have.

Whatever locations you choose, the secret to decorating with mirrors is positioning and knowing how to mix and match. Make sure the mirror properly captures any light coming in. After all, the beauty of a mirror is coaxed out by light. If there is too little or no natural light hitting the mirror add your own light fixtures. An overhead or wall light directed towards the mirror will create a beautiful effect.

In larger areas such as the living room, hang several mirrors with varying shapes and sizes. Just make sure the mirrors are complementing each other and not competing for attention. For instance, you can have several round mirrors with different sizes. Each can have its own slightly different frame that blends well with the rest.

Or a mirror positioned to reflect the view outside into the house. Or one of those cool mirror TVs where the TV transforms into a mirror when switched off. For maximum effect, get a framed mirror TV.

With decorative wall mirrors, the framing plays an even bigger role in the overall design. As much as you may want different frame styles for different mirrors, stay within a specific theme. Don’t have one mirror with an industrial-style wrought metal frame and another country-style one with a wooden trim. Even for mirrors setup in different rooms, try to work within one theme.

There are plenty of vanity mirror ideas to borrow from. For instance, you can avoid the traditional rectangular mirrors and get a round vanity mirror installed. If you feel like round is still too traditional, there are many other shapes–heart, wavy, oval and diamond.

One other popular way to add the “cool factor” is to add lighting around the mirror. LED strip lights can turn your mirror into a beautiful focal point around which the rest of the bathroom decor flows. Did you know you can also buy bathroom mirrors that are already fitted with lights?

In addition to the mirror itself, the frame is also a big part of the overall style. Using the framing alone, you can change the look of a vanity mirror. The most common strategy is to add a painted wood trim. A wide white frame gives your mirror a farmhouse or traditional look, black contrasts well with a neutral bathroom décor, bright colors like green and yellow have a warm mid-century feel while softer colors like silver and gray give your mirror a modern style.

1. Decide on the Thickness

When buying a mirror, one of the features to check is the thickness. The thicker the mirror, the more expensive it will be.

The thinnest mirrors measure around 2.5mm to 3mm in thickness. Small bathroom and dresser mirrors are often this thin. For bigger vanity and decorative mirrors, the average thickness is between 4mm and 6mm. For much larger decorative mirrors, the glass can be as thick as 9mm. For projects such as a kitchen backsplash or a mirror accent wall, talk with your contractor to figure out the best thickness. For smaller projects, the average 4mm-6mm thickness is good enough.

Also consider the thickness of the framing. Thin frames tend to have a sleek modern look and are better for expanding a room visually. Thicker and wider frames on the other hand cast a homely country feel.

2. Use Mirrors to make the Room Feel Larger

If you have a room that feels small and stuffy, mirrors will come to your rescue. Put one large one on the wall or hang two big ones on opposite walls. The mirrors create the perception of depth and expansiveness. If you have a window in the room, put the mirror opposite it. By reflecting the light coming in, it will create an airier and lighter space.

3. You Don’t Have to Hang it

Yes, you don’t have to hang a mirror. One alternative is to place a full-size framed mirror on the floor and let it lean against the wall. This is especially ideal for bedrooms. Place the mirror at the end of the bed or beside it. You can also position it opposite a piece of art you want reflected back at you.

4. More Mirrors for a Bigger Space

If you have an expansive living room, hang more mirrors to match. They can even be identical, hang in symmetry across the wall. Make sure the mirrors align with something in the room such as the sofa, a dining table or the windows on the opposite wall.

For smaller spaces, be careful not to overwhelm the room with too many or excessively large mirrors. It might fill more like funhouse than a home.

5. Don’t be Afraid to be Unique

Some of the mirror ideas are out of this world–they include unusually shaped mirrors and intricate designs that seem straight out of an engineering workshop. So don’t be afraid to go for the unusual. If it captures your heart and personality unlike anything else you have seen, go for it. If anything, it will provide a conversation starter for guests.

5 Factors to Consider When Setting up a Cozy Nook

1. How Big Do You Want It?

By their definition, nooks are small spaces. So most of the nook ideas you will come across feature tiny spaces turned into cozy spots. But a nook can also be big and even fill up an entire room. It all depends on what you need.

If you are creating a reading nook for your two kids, you need to make sure it is big enough for both of them. If the space needs to accommodate 3 or more kids, why not turn the attic into a nook where they can play, read and have fun?

If the nook is for you, make sure that you are going to be comfortable in it. Can you stretch your legs when inside? Can you easily get in and out? Otherwise, there is no point creating something that makes you feel cramped and claustrophobic.

The size will also be determined by what you plan to use the nook for. If it is simply for relaxing or reading, a small one will do just fine. If the kids need a place to play with their toys, create something large enough for them to jump and run around. Decorating and furnishings not only make a nook special and warm, it also makes it practical for whatever activities you are planning.

You don’t have to do a full renovation when decorating a nook. Often a new coat of paint will do. We recommend a color that stands out from the rest of the room while still creating a cozy and relaxing atmosphere.

Whether it is for reading, playing or eating, lighting is essential not just for illumination but also for setting the nook apart in terms of style and décor. Tips on Replacing Existing Windows

If you’re thinking about repainting your house, vinyl siding might be a good option for you. Vinyl siding is typically a durable plastic exterior siding utilized for small-scale residential homes and apartment buildings. Vinyl siding comes with a few different advantages over wood and homeowners may prefer this product because it’s a lot less expensive, but offers a more uniform appearance as well as greater longevity than wood. Most vinyl siding isn’t engineered to replicate the appearance of wood, board and battens or shakes and usually comes in relatively neutral shades, although they can be found in some vibrant hues such as cherry red, mahogany, or olive.

One way that you can make the most of your vinyl siding when repainting is to remove the existing windows and cut new windows in their place. The first thing that you will want to do when you repaint your home is to remove all exterior trim, including the trim around windows and sliding glass doors. After you’ve removed the trim, take a measurement of the inside of the windows and measure across the top of each frame for the insert that you’ll need to install new windows in. Mark this particular location so that you’ll have an easier time removing the window inserts when you’re ready to install the siding.

When installing the new vinyl siding over the old, you want to make sure that you use the same kind of nails or screws that you used on the exterior siding. You should also try to use the same size of keyhole plugs that you used on the siding. These are used in order to keep the siding from moving once it’s installed. Once you’ve installed the new vinyl siding, it’s time to move on to the next step of the project: installing the new window.

The next step of installing the new siding, after you’ve installed all the trim and exterior siding, is to nail down the bottom part of the window. This is typically a simple procedure, and it shouldn’t take you more than a few minutes. Once you’ve nailed your new siding down, you’ll then be able to pull up the rest of the vinyl and put it on your window. When you’re installing the window, you’ll want to remember to line the bottom of the window opening with matching caulking to prevent water from getting underneath the window.

Installing windows can be a great way to add a layer of protection between your home and its exterior walls. While you can often get by with just a regular wooden window, there are times when old siding becomes damaged and needs to be replaced. When you find yourself faced with this type of situation, an energy-efficient window might be an ideal option for you.

If your existing window isn’t showing any signs of wear and tear, you may need to do more than just replace the entire window. In many cases, it’s just a matter of adding some trim around the edge. When you start to trim the existing trim, be sure to use finishing nails. This will help prevent your trim pieces from coming apart. When trimming around your windows, you’ll also want to be sure to check your house plans to make sure you’re working on foundation or other structural damage. If you don’t have existing house plans, it’s often best to contact a remodeling company that has built multiple homes before.
