45 Basement Kitchenette Ideas to Help You Entertain in Style

Basement kitchenettes are starting to gain popularity as more and more basements are turned into warm living areas.  We are seeing many homeowners including a kitchenette or some type of beverage center in their basement renovation plans.

In almost all cases, a basement kitchenette is a small part of a larger basement living area. For example, you might have a family room in the basement with a kitchenette built at one end.  Maybe you have a theater area with a kitchenette nearby where the family can enjoy some refreshments; or even a guest bedroom with a kitchenette–giving the occupant some additional privacy and saving them the trouble of using the main kitchen. It could also be part of an entertainment area, or a basement bar or anything else you have in mind.

Before we delve deeper into this new trend, what is a kitchenette? It is a simple small kitchen used for basic food and beverage preparation activities.

Planning For a Basement Kitchenette

The most important part of setting up a basement kitchenette is the planning stage. Any successful home improvement project begins with thorough planning. It is important that you coordinate with a contractor early on. This blog will help you make the right decisions and save money right from the get go.

First, what is the state of the basement? Finished or unfinished? If you already have a finished basement, your work is much easier. It’s all a matter of designating a space for the kitchenette and setting it up.  On the other hand, if your basement is still a catch-all for your old junk; there is plenty of work that needs to be done before you can even think of setting up the kitchenette.

Here are other important issues you need to think about when setting up a kitchenette in basement:

Ventilation – You cannot have cooking fumes and odors getting trapped in the basement. Proper ventilation is essential both for safety and comfort. Discuss with your contractor to determine which type of ventilation is best for your kitchenette.Safety – With a kitchenette in the basement, you cannot afford to take safety for granted. Find out what the local code is regarding basement renovations and take adequate safety precautions including sprinklers, smoke alarms and escape routes.

What a unique design!

Size – A kitchenette is by definition smaller than a standard kitchen. But there still are size variations among different kitchenettes. On the compact end, there are really small ones with the most basic of necessities: a small counter, a small wall cabinet and perhaps an appliance or two. It is small enough to fit into one corner of the basement. You can also go a bit bigger, taking up one end of the basement. Here you have a few more appliances and a larger working space as well as storage; but still not at the level of a normal kitchen. The right size will depend on your budget, family size and basement size.Storage – In a kitchenette, storage demands are not many. You can make do with a few wall cabinets combined with floor cabinets below the countertop. The amount of storage will depend on the size of kitchenette and how heavily it is used. If you use it to entertain friends regularly, more is better.Appliances – Even a kitchenette needs appliances for proper functionality. The biggest challenge with kitchenette appliances is space. Most likely you will not have room for a full fridge, microwave, and oven in that small space. So decide which appliances you need most. Once you decide, buy them in smaller sizes. You can even get appliances like the fridge and microwave recessed into a cabinet to save space and create a cleaner look.  We found some helpful information at Remodelista regarding smaller scale appliances.

What a great gathering spot.

Dry Bar Vs. Wet Bar – A wet bar is defined as one with running water and a sink, however it does not always have to serve alcoholic drinks. A dry bar is simply a beverage center and has no running water. So who’s the winner between wet bar vs. dry bar? It all depends on your preferences and budget. A wet bar will likely prove to be more convenient, but will be more expensive to build because of the plumbing required for the running water.Lighting – Finally, plan your lighting with both aesthetic and functional goals in mind. On the aesthetics part, decide what look you want–warm, elegant, cool etc. and use lighting to achieve it. You can also use puck and strip lights for decorative effect on various areas of your kitchenette. On the practical side, make sure the overhead lighting will provide adequate illumination. Add under-cabinet lights to further illuminate the working area.

Take some time to look through our basement kitchenette round-up.  We’ve also included some photos of wet bars and other beverage/food preparation areas to help with the conception of your new space!

Basement Kitchenette Design Tips

1. Easy Maintenance

One of the things homeowners ignore when designing a basement kitchenette is maintenance. Simply because you have added space to your home does not mean that you have to saddle yourself with even more endless cleaning. Keep things simple and use materials that are easy to clean. For the flooring, materials like vinyl and tile are great. Wood is not so advisable considering that a basement is likely to be more humid than the rest of the house, which makes it a bit harder to maintain. For the countertop, choose laminate, quartz, recycled glass and other low-maintenance materials.

2. Go Neutral

When it comes time to paint the walls, neutral colors are better. Colors like beige, gray and white create a light and airy atmosphere that can be helpful in space where space is limited. After you have chosen the main color, use the cabinets, countertop or backsplash to create a contrasting accent. For example, off-white walls with gray cabinets and a warm toned countertop. Hopefully this kitchenette image roundup will provide inspiration on what colors will work best for your project.

3. Movable Furniture

Another great idea for a basement kitchenette is to use movable furniture. This allows the space to be quickly reconfigured and can even be made smaller when you need extra room for some other activity. This comes in handy for smaller multi-purpose basements.

4. Include a Larger Dining Area

While the bar provides a good place for sitting and dining, it does not always work so well for large families. If you have the space for it, consider adding a larger dining area to the side. This provides more comfortable sitting for formal dinners and can be handy when you have friends over.

5. Keep to the Basics

It is tempting to try and include everything in a kitchenette, attempting to turn it into a full mini-kitchen. But instead of a full functional kitchen, you will be left with a stuffy and cluttered space that no one enjoys. Instead, keep everything to a bare minimum.

As for the appliances–no more than three or four large ones. The most important ones are a mini-fridge (or a full one if you have the space), a microwave and a coffeemaker.  If you have the space, you may be able to add a few additional small appliances.

Do not be tempted to go overboard with the cutlery.  It will make it easier to maintain the kitchenette. The same goes for food items. Keep only a few snacks, beverages and things like coffee and tea.

Keeping things simple ultimately leads to a better and more practical space. While the main kitchen is associated with lots of stuff and lots of work, the kitchenette becomes a convenient quiet sanctuary to enjoy a cup of coffee or treasured family time.

6. Blend in with the Rest of the Basement

While the kitchenette should have its own recognizable signature style, make sure it blends with the overall basement style. The transition from the rest of the space should be smooth.  Try to have one overall theme (vintage, modern, country, mid-century etc.) covering the entire basement.

Many home improvement projects today are about creating personal areas away from the everyday bustle of the house. There are renovation ideas such as man caves, kid-caves, wine cellars, personal galleries and so on. The basement kitchenette joins this list as a space designed not so much for its practical uses, but for its benefits as a personal or family retreat to relax and recharge.

Balance of Functionality and Aesthetics

A big focus of contemporary finished basement designs is cost control. The basement is a relatively big space and renovating it will not be cheap. Usually homeowners don’t want to spend too much on a space that they don’t deem as crucial as the kitchen or bathroom.

Many homeowners, with the help of their contractors, are resorting to modern minimalist remodels. The ideal modern finished basement balances between aesthetics and functionality. The space need to look good and feel warm. At the same time, it also needs to be comfortable and livable in such a way that it can be put to a variety of uses.

Focus On What Your Family Needs

The best way to figure out how to put your finished basement to use is to determine what your home is missing.

If there are kids around, they are likely running out of room for their toys. If you work from home, you may need an isolated and quiet space where you can get some work done. If you don’t have a dedicated guest bedroom, the basement is the perfect place to set one up.

Maybe it’s just great extra space, a blank palette—there are so many awesome ways you can use the basement. A movie room, game room, family room or kitchenette can provide a special place for the family to bond and have fun. Man caves and/or woman caves have become trendy and there are plenty of modern basement cave ideas available to inspire your own private space.

Multipurpose Basements

The expansiveness of an unfinished basement can be a curse. In a renovated basement, it is a blessing. Instead of piling it up with junk, you can fill it up with multiple spaces that add more value to your home and your family’s life.

Bedrooms – A common strategy is to set up a couple of extra bedrooms in the basement for guests. This is especially beneficial for families that love to entertain on a regular basis. You can easily have guests stay over without disrupting the family space above. Basement bedrooms can also come in handy if you have older kids that cannot share bedrooms any more. Plus, you could also add a small kitchenette and bathroom for convenience.Children’s Play Areas – When looking at modern basement design photos; one common idea is to set up a play area for kids. This area often consists of soft flooring, such as a rug or wooden floor, and colorful easy-to-reach storage for toys and games. You can use colorful and playful décor to separate it from the rest of the basement space.Entertainment – In another area of the basement, you could add a play area for adults. This usually includes adding a home theater, setting up a pool table and a dart board on the wall. You can also get a ping pong table if pool is not your thing. Another great idea is to set up a video game center.Bars – While everyone is having all this fun, there will be a desire for refreshments. Don’t forget to set up a full bar or wet bar where you can stock juices and other beverages for the kids and something stronger for the adults. You can even combine it with a kitchenette where you can prepare a few snacks.

Also don’t forget: home gyms, wine cellars, theaters and craft rooms. The ideas are endless. Your goal should be to get as much value from the space as possible. If your basement living space is small, use it to fill a void such as an extra bedroom or additional organized storage space. If it is big, find several fun ways you can utilize the space and add value.

Décor and Furnishings

Basement decoration is generally easy thanks to the open space. It is a good idea to begin with a general theme in mind. Do you want a minimalist ultra-contemporary look or a more laid back traditional decor? Do you prefer warm colors or the space-creating effect of neutral hues?

Once you decide the overall style you want, you can go ahead and choose the various colors and decorations you will use. This is easy if you have set up a single room only such as a bedroom. If you have multiple areas set up in the basement, you need to make sure that the décor of each clearly defines it and sets it apart.

In choosing the best décor for the basement, try to create some sense of continuity with the rest of the house. Start by creating an open stairwell leading from the rest of the house. It makes the basement feel open, lighter and connected to your home. Next, make sure that anyone descending the stairwell isn’t jarred by the contrast in décor with the space above. As much as you need to create defining styles for different sections of the basement, ensure there is a flow from the décor above to the one below. Otherwise, your basement is going to feel like some far off disconnected place and not part of your home.

If you have to use a vastly different style from the rest of your home, then create a transitional space that connects the two spaces. The stairwell and the space immediately around can be used to ease the transition to a new environment.

As for the furnishings, the expansiveness is again, your friend. You can afford to set up oversize furniture without worrying about space or movement. Make sure the furnishings blend with the overall style of the basement. As with decorations, you can use furnishings to differentiate separate sections of the basement.

Storage

If your basement is going to look modern and clean, storage is essential. Whether you are setting up a bedroom, play area or family room, you are going to need a variety of storage spaces.

To retain the modern minimalist look, we recommend built-in shelves and cabinets. Try to include a wide variety from wall cabinets to pull-out drawers and wall shelves. Make sure that everything is easily accessible. For kids areas, go with low storage options that they can access without needing your help.

If you have special items such as wine bottles or art pieces, you’ll need special types of storage that can protect your precious items while still displaying them properly.

If you need to store big items such as large appliances or bikes, make sure they don’t look messy and cluttered. For things like bikes and Christmas trees, racks will keep things neat.

Be extra careful about wooden storage. If you are going to use it, make sure your basement has no moisture seepage problems. If the risk of damage is high, go with metal and plastic shelving. Additionally, choose non-wood storage for delicate items such as art, clothing and books.

dditional Tips

Check what basement specifications your local building department requires. In most places, you need to have at least one exit in case of emergencies. Some places also require fire safety measures to be put in place.Tackle the plumbing and wiring first before you begin any decorations. It would be a shame if you have to tear finished walls or flooring later on.If you are setting up a media room or play area, consider adding sound insulation to keep the noise from going into the space above. This insulation will also come handy if you want to insulate the basement from the noise above and outside.Add an air purification system to keep the basement smelling fresh. If you are going to add a window well, you also need to take security into consideration. Either install a secure locking system or add a window alarm system. You can also do both.

A Guide to Buying a Water Dispenser in Singapore

If you are looking to get a water dispenser for your home, chances are you aren’t looking for a machine that just dispenses hot and cold water. You are most probably looking for a device that can also filter out contaminants from the water or better yet, a gadget that can give you supposed additional health benefits.

Design: Mr Designer Studio

Water dispensers with filters do give some of you peace of mind, so we aren’t here to see if their purported benefits hold true or not. This guide instead will look at some of the considerations you should take when buying one. We will also explore a few products and brands available in Singapore so you can get a better idea of where to shop.

Filter types/technologies

Sediment: When looking out for water dispensers, one of the very first things you want to check out are the filters they have. Most are equipped with a variety of filters that serve different functions. The most basic of which is a filter, made from materials like ceramic or polypropylene, that removes suspended particles, rust and other sediments.

Carbon/activated carbon: There are water dispensers that come with carbon and activated carbon filters that remove odours, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as well as chemicals like chlorine through absorption.

Ultrafiltration: This filter removes particles as small as 0.01 micron. It eliminates viruses, bacteria and suspended solids.

Reverse osmosis: Water dispensers with reverse osmosis (RO) filters allow only water molecules to pass through it. They remove contaminants like lead, arsenic, fluoride and nitrates, as well as viruses and bacteria to leave you with a clean, “soft” water. But the downside to RO is that it also removes important minerals along the way.

Nanofiltration: This filter type is similar to RO (although it has slightly larger pores) and can eliminate contaminants as small as 0.001 micron. What’s different is that it allows certain minerals such as calcium and magnesium considered beneficial to us to pass through. It also softens the water like RO.

Alkaline: Water dispensers with alkaline water options claim to balance out the pH levels in your body. Alkaline water typically has a pH of about 8 or 9, which is believed to neutralise the acid waste build-up in our bodies.

The science of this, alas, isn’t definite, and the counter claim is that acid is necessary in our bodies because it helps to aid in digestion, but there are lot of people who do see and feel the benefits of drinking alkaline water, so you will have to decide if it’s something you want in your water dispenser.

Deionisation: Some water dispensers will also provide deionised water that is usually used with a number of other filters. The deionisation process is a chemical purification process to remove ions in the water. It uses ion exchange resins to replace minerals and contaminants such as calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium, chloride, sulfates and nitrates with hydrogen and hydroxide ions that recombine to form water. The result of deionisation is a purer, “softer” form of water with no minerals and salts. As a side note: PUB categorises our water as only “moderately soft”.

UV filter: A UV filter exposes harmful pathogens like bacteria and viruses as well as other living organisms to UV light, killing them. However they do not get filtered out, which is why a water dispenser with a UV filter needs to work with other filters.

For reverse osmosis and alkaline water: Coral Pure Premium 9

There are nine filters in Coral Pure’s Premium 9 water dispenser. These include a reverse osmosis and alkaline filter. To work around the loss of minerals, the dispenser is also able to generate back 72 types of natural minerals including calcium, magnesium and zinc.

Good minerals retained: Livingcare Jewel

Besides the fact that it comes in an array of very pretty colours, including this powder blue, this water dispenser also does a pretty decent job of purifying water. It comes with a carbon block filter that removes chlorine as well as a nano positive filter that eliminates germs, heavy metals, moss all while preserving the good minerals.

Tank or Tank-less?

When buying a water dispenser, consider how much space you would like to set aside on your countertop for it. For smaller homes, new and trendy tank-less options take up significantly less space. In lieu of tanks, they have cooling and heating pipes that provide instant hot and cold water. This does mean that they will need direct piping to a water supply. Tank-less dispensers have less chance of contamination since there isn’t any stagnant body of water for bacteria to grow.

Small, yet stylish: Wells The One

This tank-less, eye-catching water dispenser comes in three hues, white, red and black, and features an ultra-slim design with an 8.8cm diameter so that it doesn’t take up a lot of space on your kitchen countertop. The normal filters remove heavy metals and microorganisms but you can opt for an alkaline filter for alkaline water.

Water dispensers with tanks come with hot and cold water tanks that store water. These are bulkier, but they are also higher capacity and they dispense water at a faster rate compared to tank-less models. Some are installation-free and portable without needing to be connected to a water supply, so you can place them anywhere in the home. The downside to them is that they are constantly using power since the water in the tanks need to be constantly heated to stay hot.

Installation-free: Novita’s Instant Hot Water Dispenser W11

Don’t like the hassle of installation? Consider Novita’s W11, which needs zero installation. It comes up with a 4.6-litre tank and has five temperature settings. Water also gets dispensed really quickly—just one sec for a cup of 90 deg C hot water. It features a 5-stage filtration system, including one that removes heavy metal ions.

Temperature and water volume settings

Like having your tea at a specific temperature? Want to ensure your baby formula is at a safe enough temperature for your baby? Need to down a chilled drink after your workout? You will want to go for a water dispenser that has different temperature settings to suit different needs. The more, the merrier, obviously, but you should make sure they have at least hot water, warm water, room temperature water and cold water settings.

Water volume settings are also another bonus feature to look out for. No need to lug out the measuring jugs when you know precisely how much water it dispenses each time depending on the button you press. Convenient if you are making instant teas and coffees or for following recipes.

Clean interface: Purikool’s Puri Jiksoo ODT-004DU Metal Grey

It may not have fancy bells and whistles, but this tank-less water dispenser does the job with four temperature settings (warm, cold, room temperature, hot) and four volume settings (120ml, 250ml, 550ml and infinity). It comes with a 4-stage filter system that removes ultra-small micropores of 0.01 microns.

Ice-maker: Ruhens Ice

There are five different temperature controls for this Ruhens water dispenser, including one for making baby formula, one for sterilising kitchen utensils and another for cold-brew teas. What’s really unique about this machine though is that it also has an ice-making feature that makes ice from the filtered water.

Maintenance

Consider also the amount of maintenance needed and whether that will be at a level you are comfortable with. Some will require regular servicing, which will incur a charge at your end. What’s more popular nowadays are those with self-cleaning, sterilising functions, so these machines basically clean themselves.

Most will require you to change the filters regularly. How long before you need to change the filters will depend on usage. On average, it’s about six to 12 months. Filter replacement is usually DIY, but you will need to pay for the new filters.

Easy to maintain: Cosmo Quantum

This water dispenser comes with an automatic self-cleaning function that sanitises the machine regularly. Filters are also really easy to replace. All you have to do is pull out the front facade, twist and turn out the old filters, lock in the new ones and place back the cover. This comes with a 6-stage filter system, and you get the choice of opting for an alkaline filter.

Complete sterilisation: Chromium Grey Sterra Water Purifier

The nozzles at water dispensers can get icky after a while, which is why Sterra’s water UV-C LED nozzle steriliser that automatically cleans the outlet means there isn’t a need to clean it yourself. Plus, it also has an electric steriliser module that regularly sterilisers the internal water flow path so it’s pretty much hands off for you.

Other features to look out for

Child-safety lock: A must if you have young children at home or you are planning to locate your dispenser at an accessible location. You don’t want them fiddling around with the buttons on your water dispenser and accidentally scalding themselves with the hot water.

Price of filters: Besides looking at the price of the machine, you will want to account for the prices of the filters since you are likely replacing them once every 6 months or so.

Energy saving: Water dispensers with tanks tend to continually use power even when you are not using it since they will need to keep the hot water tank warm and ready for use. So it’s best to pay attention to the power usage and whether there is an eco mode.

Tank-less options aren’t as big an issue since they don’t use power when not in use.

Adjustable or removable drip tray: This is not only useful for cleaning, it is also a good-to-have if you want to fill up taller containers or water bottles.

Rec Room Basics

If you’re a homeowner who has never planned out a rec room before, there are few key things to consider first. Before jumping right into your color palette and furniture style, it’s important to understand where the recreational room is going to go, and what purposes it will serve.

Consider such factors as:

The location of your rec room can play a part in what role it plays. For example, many homeowners plan their recreational room ideas in their basement, which is a nice way to add a touch of privacy to the room. That way, the room feels a little separate from the rest of the home, for those who want to have somewhere to escape to from time to time. That isn’t to say that other locations in the home won’t work as well; garages and empty bedrooms are also common locations for recreational rooms. What ultimate purpose is your recreational room going to serve? Do you want to transform it into a dynamic game room where all of your family and friends can have fun and play together? Do you want it to be an at-home gym, equipped with workout equipment and mats to stretch on? Or, perhaps you need a quiet escape, and you want your rec room to be your private reading room with plenty of comfy chairs and good lighting. How you plan on using the room will determine what kind of furniture and decor to put in it.

Of course, you should think about your budget as well; however, there is a lot of flexibility in cost when it comes to building and decorating your recreational room. It is more important to make sure the room meets your design and utility needs. Make it a room you love and enjoy spending time in. It doesn’t require you to pour a good chunk of your bank account into it. The beauty of recreational rooms is that there really is no minimum or maximum limit on cost. Make it a space that gives you what you want.

Hopefully, the following recreational room ideas for your home will inspire your design ideas. Take a look at these inspiring images.

1. Family Gaming Space

Who doesn’t enjoy family game nights? Use a quiet corner of the rec room and install a round table. This can be the perfect spot for card games, board games, or trivia games. You can choose a color that pops, or go with something more neutral-toned to keep the calmness of the room at a reasonable level.

2. At-Home Gym

This is an ideal design for a large downstairs recreational room. If you have the space to work with, consider installing a mirror along one of the walls to recreate the look of a real gym. Add your favorite workout equipment, and don’t forget to set aside some space for relaxation as well. Put a TV in viewing range of your treadmill so you can be entertained while you exercise. Or, add a lounge area to the corner of the room where you can cool down with a drink after your workout.

3. Built-In Bar

Are you the type that loves to entertain? You can turn your basement or garage into a dynamic and hip space by making it into a bar. Add a television for entertainment, and get some secure display cases to store all of your alcohol. Imitate the look of a real bar, and turn the classiness factor up a notch. Add some funky bar stools to complete the look. If the space is big enough, you can also add a brightly-colored pool table or a dartboard to give the room an extra pop.

4. Second Living Room

Again, some people just need a home away from home – at home. One of the most popular ideas for a downstairs recreational room includes transforming the space into a second living room. Another idea is to make it an open-concept plan, so everything is easily accessible. Add some comfortable furniture, decorate the ceiling with elegant lighting, and install hardwood floors to make it feel like a natural part of your home. Hardwood – or vinyl hardwood – is a good flooring idea for a recreational room due to its value. It can immediately make any room look better, especially if you are trying to go for a more classy or chic look. Plus, hardwood is easier to clean than carpet, saving you some extra time without giving you a whole extra room to clean.

5. Space for Work and Play

So much time is spent focusing on the function of your rec room, but why not make it a multi-purpose space? A big garage can easily be turned into a workspace for your startup or team-based business. You can host meetings in rooms with warm lighting and lots of free space to walk around. Add a pool table to give you and your guests a fun team-building game to play during your work meetings. Offer refreshments and some comfortable places to sit. It’s now your home studio or office!

6. Bean Bag Chairs for the Kids

Give your kids a fun space to hang out when it’s too hot to play outside. When they are on break from school, they will be excited to have a playroom all of their own. Bean bag chairs make for comfortable seating options that also offer up-close viewing of the TV. This is especially helpful if your little ones love to play video games or watch Netflix. You can even install a mini-fridge or a snack bar so they have everything they need to play and rest comfortably.

FITNESS

DES Home Renovations

7. More Flooring Ideas for Your Recreational Room

Don’t like the hardwood or vinyl look? No problem! There are plenty of useful carpet options to complete the look of your room. Commercial carpets often found in office spaces are flat, without any plush feel to them, and can be a solid option for your rec room floor. This is especially true if you have moving pieces of furniture – an office chair on wheels, for example. Make sure to get a carpet protection pad if you are using the room as an additional workspace. Find different colors and patterns that can complement the other decor in your recreational room.

8. If Natural Lighting is Your Thing…

A number of recreational room ideas work excellently with lots of natural lighting. If your rec room isn’t below ground level, you can use it as an opportunity to build the large window you’ve ever wanted. Your home may have a stunning view in a certain direction, and if the rest of your home hasn’t taken advantage of the opportunity to build a window, use this new recreational room design to open up the space. Not only does it make the space appear larger, but it also brings in a lot of warm natural light to an otherwise dark and stuffy room.

9. Industrial Style Accommodations

The rustic or industrial style of modern design is wildly popular when it comes to hosting parties and events. If you’re as in love with this look as many homeowners are, you can use it as a recreational room idea when planning out your space. Industrial lighting and furniture can really go a long way. Hanging up old art or building your own lighting systems out of reclaimed metal offer a unique sense of value to your home. Plus, your guests and fellow partygoers will really dig it.

10. Make Billiards the Star of the Room

Billiards brings everybody together. It is a universally loved game, and it goes without saying that pool tables are quite beautiful in construction. They look nice to have in your home, especially in a recreational room. If you love playing games with your family or friends, then it’s hard to pass up an opportunity to install a billiards room in your house. You can get custom carpeting on top of the table that matches the bold or calm colors in the rest of the room. For example, those who want to make a room pop might add a splash of red with the billiards table.

11. Home Theater

Go big with your recreational room ideas. An in-home theater is the perfect epic installment that you can add to your ultimate relaxation room. Treat your family to a night at the movies every night in the comfort of your own home. This requires some wall space for the biggest flat-screen TV you can get, and it might be worth investing in a surround sound system as well. The result will be well worth it. Bonus recreational room ideas include adding theater-like seating with plush upholstery and cup holders, or a bar behind the seating area so guests can drink and watch at the same time.

12. Dream Library

If you want your rec room to resemble something on the quieter side, why not build your own home library? A personal reading room can be one of the most relaxing and rejuvenating spaces to be in. Allowing yourself to have a quiet space with relaxing furniture and a pleasing color palette can do wonders for your health. Another one of the most popular ideas for a downstairs recreational room is to turn the basement into a study space, away from the rest of the home so there are no interruptions or distractions.

Small Recreational Room Ideas for the Home

Are you trying to make the best out of a tiny space? Those who don’t have full rooms to work with can still achieve the ideal rec room look. Small spaces can be used to relax in comfortably. It might be worth considering having a small set of lounge chairs or a loveseat in front of a wall-mounted TV. Add a lamp for lighting, and a couple of small decorations, as well as a side table to set down food and drinks. That’s all you need to have a relaxing, intimate, stay-at-home evening with family or friends.

Transform Your Rec Room with These Simple Ideas!

Turning your basement, garage, or spare bedroom into a recreational room is a great idea for those looking to add more function in their home. A rec room can expand a homeowner’s opportunities to invite neighbors and family members over for a relaxing time. The style and design you choose is up to you, and a lot depends on what role the rec room will play in your home. Will it serve as a relaxation space for you to have some alone time? Will it be a gaming and entertainment space for late-night parties? Or, will it be a relaxing video game hangout area

for your kids?

The opportunities are endless, especially when it’s a homeowner’s first time designing a rec room. How To Determine If A Deck Can Support A Hot Tub

Naturally, you want to inspect your deck to ensure it can hold a fair amount of weight. If it can’t, there are ways to add the proper amount of support. Decks are one of the most common (and most preferred) backyard locations for a hot tub, and there are ways to carefully plan for its structural integrity so that all is done safely.

The Formula

There is actually a specific formula that can help you determine the weight of your spa, and whether your deck is supported enough to hold it:

[Weight of Hot Tub + (Number of Gallons of Water in Your Tub x 8.34lbs) + (Number of Total People Hot Tub Can Seat x 175lbs)] / Number of Total Square Feet of Your Tub = Your Pounds Per Square Foot

There can be extra factors and variations added by the manufacturer, or by the professional contractor you’re speaking with. This is just a general mathematical formula to determine weight at the baseline, but other considerations are needed. This is especially true if your deck is already elevated, or if you plan on elevating it while installing a built-in hot tub.

The Rule of Thumb

It’s always recommended to check with the hot tub’s manufacturer for specific weight information first. It is also to speak with a renovation expert about the status of your deck before starting any projects on your own.

That being said, it is generally understood that decks situated just a few feet above the ground can hold roughly 100 pounds per square foot. If your hot tub’s manufacturer lets you know that the hot tub weighs less than 100 pounds per square foot (filled with water, of course), then you do not need to worry about adding extra reinforcements.

Extra Considerations

Of course, it’s important to consider extra weight factors such as yourself and your family while you enjoy the tub. Typically, the manufacturer takes this into account when giving you the numbers. But if you still aren’t feeling completely confident with how to reinforce a deck for a hot tub, you are encouraged to reach out to a contractor who can help you further your deck specifications for a safe – and stylish – spa construction.

Deck Designs With Hot Tub

While a deck with a hot tub isn’t the rarest backyard build, there are certainly some designs that stand out more than others. Designing a deck around a hot tub – or vice versa – is a great way to incorporate natural with man-made landscaping. Many homeowners see it as a harmony of the elements, with water and wood completing each other as one extending backyard unit. It flows well with an open-concept style home, where each individual element comes together to be a part of the whole.

Here are some of the top backyard designs to complement your yard, no matter the size or style.

1. Small Space Deck Tub

Our first hot tub on deck design features a smaller backyard, to emphasize the importance of space optimization, rather than expansion. A lot can be done with vertical space, and an elevated spa on top of a small deck can add that sense of depth and dimension to completely transform the space.

Not only will this make your backyard space look larger, but it will also make the hot tub the focal point of the entire display. This is a great idea for deck corners as well. Built-in spas can be incorporated into the overall design of the deck, and elevated spas will add to its value without needing a deck redesign.

2. Big Yard, Small Deck

If you plan on building a deck along with your hot tub, you don’t necessarily need to dominate the space. Big backyards can incorporate a number of elements and themes at once, much like a home. You can build a smaller deck that exists on just one side or corner of your yard, while the rest is complete with your other landscaping ideas.

When this type of construction comes into play, it’s important to take a piece of wisdom from the previous image. Stack the hot tub on top of the deck to give it more visual size growth. Again, expanding vertically gives you a lot more to work with. These decks can also rest on the ground level, so you won’t have to worry about the specifics of weight per square foot.

3. Raised Short Deck

Combine traditional and modern with a raised short deck and hot tub addition. Short decks are designed to elevate your backyard space while giving you all the luxury of a backyard retreat. One popular idea is to accent the space with seating and greenery while keeping your leisure area as the main focal point of the space. The deck can be built to accommodate the hot tub, or the hot tub can be measured and weighed for the perfect placement on your already-built backyard deck.

4. Rooftop Deck with Raised Spa

Even if you aren’t lucky enough to have a rooftop patio, this design might still be useful when it comes to planning out your space. Rooftop decks are not large, yet they can account for a lot of luxury. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in something more precious: privacy. Decks are meant to be an expression of privacy, especially when you can enjoy them in your own home.

Structurally-speaking, you may have special considerations to take into account if the deck is on the roof. Installing a spa might be easiest if you do so above-deck, creating the perfect space for privacy and relaxation – with a stunning view.

5. Your Own Private Spa

Don’t have time to go to the spa? Don’t have time for weekly hot tub dips or sauna cleanses? Take matters into your own hands and build a backyard spa that treats your every need in the comfort of your home. You can transform your deck into a private spa area by adding fencing to close the space in. Design steps leading up to an elevated deck, or add a gate to make entry even more private.

Build your hot tub in the deck. Add some comfy chairs or even a massage table in the space to really make it your own. Turn on some relaxing music, enjoy the sights and smells of your thriving gardens, and stay warm in the bubbling hot tub all night long.

Sebring Tip: Add a few drops of natural essential oils into your bubbling hot tub to produce a variety of lovely and calming smells, such as lavender or orange.

6. A Four-Post Structure

Is your backyard a little too free from privacy for your tastes? You can accommodate for that by building your own walls and hedges to keep the neighbors’ eyes away. A creative trend that many homeowners are investing in is the four-post structure style, creating lattice walls and trellis around three sides of the hot tub. That way, you can have a more private space on your deck without having to pay for expensive landscaping costs.

Plus, you can control how much privacy you want. With a trellis, you can plant vines, or create a wall of bushes to block the neighbors’ view while keeping up with a natural garden look.  Checkout these Spring Gardening Tips.

7. Wrap-Around Deck Stairs

There’s just as much opportunity with a real, built-in hot tub as there is with a hot tub stacked on top of the deck. If you want to go completely built-in, you can expand the design of your deck to offer something contemporary and unique. Wrap-around stairs are a popular and inexpensive addition to a deck that can blend the floor and deck levels together while also leading the eyes towards the prize: the hot tub.

Spas should always be a major focus of the backyard, one that suggests luxury and leisure. The hot tub can be made beautiful with all of the solid wood decking surrounding it. Wrap-around wooden deck stairs can frame the tub while adding more natural wood to your yard.

8. A Deck, With A Hot Tub On The Side

Maximizing your space to add a hot tub doesn’t mean you have to change anything about the way your deck currently looks. It’s always possible to add a side extension to your deck – perhaps even on an elevated level – to fit the hot tub while keeping the main area of your deck as the major focus that pulls the yard together. Add lots of greenery around the deck to blend natural and man-made in perfect unison.

Decks can hold a lot of important backyard pieces in its space. Make sure you have room for your table and chairs, fire pit, barbecue, or any other functional piece that makes your backyard experience complete.

9. Backyard Gazebo Oasis

For those who have as little space as possible to make any additions or changes, there is still hope. You can add layers of privacy, beauty, and dimension by building a gazebo around your hot tub. Raised hot tubs can be an eyesore if they don’t have a lot surrounding them. But you can easily box them in with a beautifully-built wooden gazebo that extends the look of your deck upwards and completes your backyard as a cohesive style.

Plus, this will add a layer of privacy that can keep you feeling safe and secure in your backyard – even if it isn’t the most closed-off space to begin with. Adding trellises with vines, slatted fencing, or lots of greenery can give you all the privacy you need.

10. Maximum Elevation With Built-in Benches

You can easily build a wooden bench that matches the height of your hot tub while also providing additional seating space. Not only have you just added new levels to your deck, resulting in a look of height and depth, but you’ve also created more function out of a valuable backyard piece that already serves you so well. This is a great way to maximize your form, function, design, and style all into one.

This works well with elevated hot tubs that are placed on the side or in the corner of the deck area. Lifting the wood up to meet the top of the hot tub makes it all feel like a cohesive unit, rather than just having an ugly spa sitting on top of a wooden deck. Now you have somewhere to safely enter the hot tub, or take a seat, or store your towels. It’s a win-win situation for form and function.

Transform Your Backyard Deck Into The Hottest Spa In Your Home!

It doesn’t take much to turn your deck into a spa-friendly place for the ultimate luxury and leisure. However, it’s important to speak with a professional before moving on to any of the steps in your backyard plan. There are lot of factors that need to be taken into consideration before a hot tub can be safely elevated onto a deck – or built into one.

Depending on the shape, size, and weight per square foot of the hot tub, you will have a number of options to build it into your deck. And if you can only place it on top, you can build extra accommodations to make it look like the tub has existed there all along.

It’s easy to do this in an affordable and reliable way with Sebring Design Build. Building Your Outdoor Kitchen

The art of outdoor entertaining can increase both your creativity and your land value. Outdoor kitchens are leisurely, allowing families to enjoy the feeling of a good cookout without having to stay indoors. But there are a few key considerations to understand when embarking on your outdoor kitchen journey. Take a look at some of these DIY outdoor kitchen ideas and tips to help you transform your backyard into the outdoor entertainment center you want it to be.

Take Accurate Measurements

You need to take the space and size of your backyard into account before deciding which outdoor kitchen ideas work best for you. You can get in touch with a professional contractor for help making measurements of your patio and kitchen area. Make sure not to put aside too much backyard space for the kitchen alone, as you still need an area for comfortable seating, tabling, and relaxation.

Think About Framing

Is your outdoor kitchen going to be the main focal point of the backyard? How many components of the outdoor kitchen do you plan on installing? Being able to answer these questions will give you a better idea of the design you’re looking for.

Plus, you should make sure that you have a sturdy foundation built up for you to base all of your appliances on. Make sure that whatever you’re building is solid enough to hold the backyard kitchen you plan on having.

Know Your Decor And Details

An outdoor kitchen isn’t complete without a nearby place to sit down and enjoy the food. Arranging your decor can be another big step in the decision-making process when looking for new outdoor kitchen ideas. And going beyond just form, you need function, too. Make sure you’ve planned for additional storage space for your cookware and dishes. Make sure you know where your water and gas lines are if you plan on installing a stove or sink. Get all the details before you set the design portion of your plan into motion.

Outdoor Kitchen Ideas For Small Spaces

Just because your backyard is small, doesn’t mean there isn’t a space for an outdoor kitchen. In fact, some of the best designs can be laid on a budget. The most important thing an outdoor kitchen needs is a functional space, not a large one. In fact, you can even design a kitchen that is closeby to your indoor one; that way, you can quickly run in and grab additional items without having to run all throughout the house. It also allows you to use many of the same gas and water hookups that you use for your regular kitchen. Saving energy and time go hand in hand with saving space.

Make It Separate

When it comes to cooking outdoors, you just need a place for your stove or oven to ventilate. As long as you can build sufficient space for that, the rest of your design can be resized to your liking. One clever idea is to build a small bar or island that can be designated especially for the outdoor kitchen. The rest of your backyard can be left the way it is, or reserved for other functions. It will help your space to feel larger while also having a special space put aside just for cooking.

Keep It Covered

A covered outdoor kitchen can actually expand its lifespan. Offering your outdoor kitchen a fair amount of protection from the elements or the sun’s constant rays can prolong the functionality of your appliances and utensils. Wooden archways or patio covers make excellent coverings for an outdoor kitchen and bar area. It can be solid or slatted to fit well with your already-existing style.

Combine Your Cooking And Seating Areas

Kitchens with attached bars look attractive for a reason. It can be both a fun and functional way to conserve space while making sure not to skimp out on any of the outdoor kitchen necessities. You can have a full seating area with some chairs and plenty of space for food and drinks on the bar, while your oven or stove is on the other side. This is sure to liven up your holiday barbecues, and this time you won’t be embarrassed to invite the neighbors.

Rustic Outdoor Kitchen Ideas

Something about old fashioned makes it always in fashion. The rustic, artisan style is popular for outdoor kitchens, especially those inspired by rustic country farms or Tuscan villas.

Make New Look Like Old

Rustic kitchens use a lot of slatted and reclaimed wood to decorate tables, provide awnings and offer unique decoration. Mixing a little bit of old in with the new – like leaving some vintage kitchen utensils on the bar for decor – can really go a long way by boosting the value of your yard. Using farm tools as functional decoration pieces (like the top of a pitchfork for hanging your spatulas, for example) will add both history and charm to your once plain backyard.

Work With Nature

You dont need to separate the kitchen part of your backyard from the garden part of backyard. Incorporate it all at once so you can get that true rustic farmhouse look. Build seating areas around tree trunks, or use old wooden flowerbeds as coolers to store fresh ingredients. There are a number of ways to enhance the design of your outdoor kitchen by giving it some old fashioned style.

Use Stone and Brick

It’s true that wood gives off a rustic vibe. But stone and brick can transform your outdoor kitchen into a quaint cottage or old-fashioned European home. The cool stone walls will help regulate temperatures as your cooking is sure to turn up the heat. Some homeowners even opt for built-in pizza ovens right into the stone, where hand-tossed pies can be cooked to perfection.

Make A Fireplace Retreat

Add a covering and a fireplace to your kitchen area for a true rustic outdoors experience. You can create your own little sanctuary in your old-fashioned outdoor kitchen. It’s your own escape from the stresses of modern life while you and your family can enjoy the feeling of living in simpler times.

DIY Outdoor Kitchen Ideas

Looking to build your outdoor kitchen with your own hands? There are a couple of designs that will help make your job easier – and more amazing.

Make An Island Frame

The best way to get the kitchen of your dreams with your own work and materials is to construct a frame for a kitchen island. No matter the size of the yard, it might be easy to have a separate piece made just for the kitchen, rather than having to rip up or replace certain parts of your yard that already exist. You should also know your materials. Wood is combustible yet affordable, and brick is heavy and long-lasting. Even if you are invested in a DIY project, you may still want to communicate with a professional contractor to ensure that you have all the materials and supply you need to build a reinforced structure.

Build A Patio Or Deck

Outdoor kitchens look wonderful on top of a patio or deck, where they are elevated to become the focal point of the yard. If you have parts of your outdoor kitchen ready, but nowhere to put it, you can start by designating a solid foundation to put your kitchen upon. Decks made of wood and patios made of concerete are both solid options – no pun intended.

Outdoor Kitchen Ideas On A Budget

Sometimes it’s good to get back to basics. When you’re working on a budget, you learn to really reflect on what’s necessary and what isn’t. There are several ways you can build your dream outdoor kitchen while sticking to your price plan. Some parts of the outdoor kitchen experience might be DIY, but that can be part of the fun, and all the more rewarding once it’s built.

TROPICAL

New Leaf Construction

What a relaxing place to have a cook out.

EXTERNAL BAR

Mihaly Slocombe

Amazing space that has all the high-end elements.

Plot Out Your Essentials

Designing a kitchen that has just the basics doesn’t mean it needs to look bad or bare. In fact, a little bit can go a long way. Spending some of your budget on a nice grill that comes with plenty of storage and cleanup space will save you the cost of separate cabinets and trash cans later. A basic table and chairs is all that’s needed to make an inviting dinner setting where your friends and family will enjoy dining with you under the stars. Or, you can build your own kitchen island and install some of your kitchen appliances inside of it to make it look like a full modular component.

Get Reused Or Salvaged Materials

Looking to make a wooden island frame but you can’t afford to cut a bunch of fresh lumber? There are still options available. Go to salvage yards or recycling centers where you can find reclaimed wood, stone, countertops, building materials, and even some appliances or machinery that might help you further your outdoor kitchen plans. Your local hardware store might even have “put-it-together” kits where you can install modular kitchen appliances without having to build every little thing from scratch.

Focus On The Seating

If you can’t afford much in the way of kitchen appliances, don’t feel like it’s going to dampen your idea of a picturesque backyard. You can enhance other parts of the kitchen design – such as the seating and tabling arrangements – in a more opulent way. Keeping in mind that both form and function are important, and what you lack in function you can make up for in form. Having a simple grill is enough to create an entire outdoor kitchen space.

Install A TV

Again, you can focus on the extra parts of the outdoor design to make up for a lack of actual kitchen appliances. Having a television set up next to your seating area can make it the best place for entertainment. What was once an empty space is now the go-to spot for family gatherings and neighborhood parties every summer. Simple outdoor kitchens are all you need to create a dynamic space.

Build Your Outdoor Kitchen Without Limits

Achieving your ideal outdoor kitchen design is not something that has to empty out your bank account. If you are working on a budget, there are plenty of design and decor options that will take a little bit and go a long way with it. In fact, some of the most popular outdoor kitchens have been made in small spaces or with a small budget.

If you are in the market for multiple appliances and a designated kitchen setup in your yard, there are a number of ideas to help you enhance the space. As an example, building a deck or patio can add new levels and dimension to your yard, making it look bigger than it was before. Or, you can design a patio cover that will cover the kitchen area for a more private and peaceful place to enjoy the outdoors. If you’re looking for more guidance before starting your ultimate outdoor kitchen design project, you can check out Remodeling 101: A Free Homeowner’s Guide, which is available for download. More tips and ideas can give you a way to take your available space and budget and come up with your ideal outdoor kitchen design.

21 Wainscoting Ideas For Your Home Remodel

Featured Image Source: MantelCraft

Dating back centuries, wainscoting is a tradition that adds value to the home regardless of style or design. Installing unique wainscoting patterns in the bathroom, kitchen, or hallways can really boost your overall look. When it comes to these architectural accents, there is something for everybody to enjoy.

It is one of the simplest and most elegant ways to add architectural detail to your home. It is the perfect technique for making your plain walls a little more lively. Not only is it visually stunning, but it’s utilitarian as well.

Whether you want a simple trim, or you want to go all out with molding and chair rail details, there are a lot of ways to turn wainscoting into something useful. Below are our favorite bathroom wainscoting ideas, as well as some DIY wainscoting ideas for those of you who want to start this project as soon as possible.

Wainscoting, Defined

First, let’s take a look at what wainscoting means for your bathroom. According to Realtor.com, wainscoting began as a tradition in the early 1700s to provide more insulation to homes for added warmth. It also provides a fairly durable sheeting around your wall for extra protection. Nowadays, it’s used mainly for decorative purposes to create more visual appeal.

In the past, wainscoting has been made completely from wood. While that’s largely still the case, the art of wainscoting has grown to include a number of materials such as pressed wood, fiberboard, PVC plastic, and embossed metal. Even drywall can be used for wainscoting, although it is not often recommended for wainscoting ideas in the bathroom due to its inability to hold up to moisture.

When designed correctly, wainscoting should start partly up the wall with a chair rail, and have a base board at the bottom of the wall. While wainscoting typically does not go higher than 31” – 32”, it can be applied liberally if the design is right. Between the base molding and the top railing, what happens in between is up to the creative eye of the homeowner.

rtistic Designs for Living, Tineke Triggs

Beautiful touch of modern to complement the shower and bath.

Let’s take a look at some popular and artistic wainscoting ideas that can help spruce up your bathroom or foyer.

Unifying Wainscoting

Wainscoting is often installed in the bathroom in order to blend the room together. It’s a great way to join ceiling and floor, making everything look like one cohesive unit. It’s a good idea to match wainscoting to the color of your sinks or tub, for example, and then raise it upwards to the wall to incorporate elements at all levels. This can really help to elevate your bathroom from plain to sophisticated.

Matching Cabinetry

Another idea is to match your wainscoting to your bathroom cabinetry, which can make the whole room look more uniform rather than disjointed. This is well done in a traditional style, and can be incorporated into more contemporary looks as well. Wainscoting that is painted in the same color as the cabinets can extend the look of the cabinets upwards and outwards, which actually can make the room appear bigger altogether.

Merge With Backsplash

Speaking of making the room look bigger, merging the wainscoting with the backsplash can make your bathroom walls grow – literally. This is another ideal way to create a spacious effect. It will also make the wainscoting appear higher, since it blends so seamlessly with the backsplash. But this makes it easier for you to attach additional features to your bathroom such as towel rings, light fixtures, and wall art.

Floor Matching

Matching with cabinets and appliances might be one thing, but matching with the floor is another option as well. This serves to both elongate the room and bring it together. And by matching, not only do we mean matching the color of the floor, but the texture and pattern as well. Wood paneling looks great when extended upwards on the wall, or when finished across the room in a molding.

More Wood Paneling

When it comes to wood paneling on your wainscoting decoration, there are nearly countless ways to go about it. One thing that deserves to be brought to attention is the unique usefulness of horizontal lines. It’s no secret that most wood paneling is assembled vertically, and there’s good reason for that – it can accentuate features and elongate the look of the room. But there’s a place in design for horizontal panels too. In fact, it might serve to add some dynamism to the room if you combine both vertical and horizontal panels together.

Going Back To The Basics

One of the best DIY wainscoting ideas is to just stick with the basics. All you need for successful wainscoting is a top rail, stiles, and a baseboard. You have a number of style and material options at your disposal, and as long as you have the tools to accurately measure the walls and place the studs, you can transform your bathroom into something of elegance all on your own.

Updating Existing Wainscoting

Maybe you already have a wainscoting decoration in your bathroom, but you don’t like the way it looks. Instead of tearing it down and building a completely new one, you can apply some updates to what you have. An easy and budget-friendly way to do this is to repaint and re-stain your molding and baseboards to match a color you desire. We recommend using a semi-gloss paint, as they are more resistant to dirt and can be wiped down easily.

Forget Color

On the opposite end of the spectrum, sometimes adding more color is too much for your bathroom. Instead, leave the wainscoting white. This is an especially good bathroom wainscoting idea if you already have a lot of color and vibrancy to begin with. If you’ve chosen intricate flooring or brightly-colored cabinets, add white wainscoting to neutralize the area and offset the chance that someone will be visually overwhelmed. Plus, it adds a touch of class, which boosts the value of your home.

9. Use Wainscoting To Cover Up Tile

The great thing about wainscoting is that you don’t necessarily need to have a solid foundation behind it in order to build upon. If your bathroom has some damaged tile or vinyl on the walls, it can be cheaper to cover it up than to go through a full bathroom remodel. Simple wainscoting can be applied in front of your damaged tile to create a whole new look for a bathroom, increasing its value in the process. This takes “out of sight, out of mind” to a whole new level!

Wainscoting As The Defining Color

Some people have a lot of color in their bathrooms, and others don’t. For those who are lacking in something other than monotone, the wainscoting can be an excellent opportunity to add a splash of flair. Make the wainscoting the primary source of color in the room. Not only will it beautify the bathroom, but it will train the eyes to make the wainscoting the focal point of the room. This will make it even more appealing.

Replace Tiles

If you’re considering putting wall tiles in your bathroom, you might want to think about installing wainscoting instead. Not only can this save you money (especially if you are a DIY wainscoting kind of person), but it can actually amplify the visual and architectural appeal of the bathroom. Plus, tile in many cases actually adds an element of coldness to the bathroom, which may not be the type of ambiance you’re looking for.

Dark Wainscoting To Accentuate The Mood

Small half-bathrooms and powder rooms can benefit from some mood-amplifying wainscoting. You may think that adding architectural detail to a room that’s already so small is too overwhelming, but not when it’s done right. For example, a dark powder room with moody wallpaper can be accentuated by black wainscoting to give the once insignificant room a dramatic appeal. The same method can be applied with light, cheery colors as well.

Match Your Floor Tiles

You can match your wainscoting to your floor without having to completely make things color-for-color. If your bathroom has a nice floor tile pattern with multiple colors, choose the one you’d like to highlight the most. Paint your wainscoting in that color (or very similar shades of that color) to make the room pop. It creates a sense of cohesiveness in the meantime, too.

Wainscoting Around All Elements Of The Bathroom

You can help create a “pop” in your bathroom by wainscoting around the elements of the bathroom, rather than just the walls. For example, if your tub is built into the structure of the bathroom with a little bit of drywall around it, you can add the wainscoting around all four sides of the tub for visual appeal. This will definitely make the space in your bathroom appear larger, and it will give it some depth so you have different height levels to work with.

Wainscoting With A Pattern

You don’t need to limit yourself to the traditional paneling or bedboard style. Wainscoting has limitless decoration options, and it’s important to find one that you can get the most value and enjoyment out of. One of our favorite selections includes diamond-shaped panels between the railing and the baseboard to make things architecturally interesting.

How High Should The Wainscoting Wall Be?

Incorporating your wainscoting bathroom ideas can be a challenge if you don’t have a ton of wall height to work with. But thankfully, most wainscoting professionals aren’t too stingy on the specifics. While the traditional height of a wainscoting design reaches up to 32”, the average in bathrooms is extended to 36”. Some people with very tall ceilings in their bathrooms have reported their wainscoting measuring up to 52”. This is mainly up to a personal decision, but there are a few things to consider:

Building the wainscoting too high, or all the way up to the ceiling, will sacrifice the nature of the duality that wainscoting brings to the bathroom in the first place. You don’t want the wainscoting to overwhelm all other elements of the bathroom, but rather you want to use it as an accent.Wainscoting can be a good way to protect the bathroom walls against mildew, mold, and moisture buildup. But be sure to get an exterior grade paint that will ward that moisture off in the first place.

Remember that wainscoting is a textured wall paneling that adds to your existing wall, rather than replaces it. If you want floor-to-ceiling paneling, it can serve well in the way of design, but some people would be hard-pressed to call that actual wainscoting. It shouldn’t extend more than halfway up the wall, and in most cases, it covers even less of it. You want something that will add to your architectural height, not completely take it over.

Find Additional Wainscoting Techniques For Your Dream Bathroom Remodeling Project

Wainscoting is certainly not one of the top necessities of any room, but it can add plenty of value and architectural appeal. If you’re looking for ways to accentuate your half-bath, powder room, or full bathroom, wainscoting can be an elegant and affordable way to do it. In fact, improving on the trim around your walls, especially on your wainscoting, can really boost the net value of your home.

While most wainscoting projects can be done in a DIY fashion, it’s important to work with a professional contractor you can trust. That way, you know that each panel is installed correctly, and all external factors are taken into account. For example, you want to make sure that wainscoting is actually effective in protecting your wall against moisture and mildew. Then you won’t have to replace any of that broken or old tile that you’re sick of looking at.

More ideas for getting started with wainscoting can be found in our free eBook, Remodeling 101: A Free Homeowner’s Guide. In the book, you can get access to tips for designing the bathroom remodel you’ve always wanted. Additional information about home remodeling is included so you can be as prepared as possible by the time you are ready to make your first steps towards your remodeling project.

French Country Style, A History

At one point in time, French Country was considered “old school”. And that is perhaps what gives it some of its timeless charm. This design trend started in the Provence countryside, with old French villas and chateaus made of stone. The inside furnishings were exactly what you’d imagine – distressed wood ceilings, brightly-colored decorations, and vibrant wall coatings. The perfect combination of rustic and modern created this sense of chic design that hadn’t been done anywhere else before.

The style actually dates back as far as the 1600s, during the reign of Louis XIV. When he renovated the Palace of Versailles, he made it one of the first large-scale buildings to boast the French Country style. At the time, this was considered the height of luxuriousness and wealth, making people across all nations jealous of the fabulous style.

Over the years, the style evolved into something that citizens in simple country homes could adopt. It soon became a symbol of the elegant and rustic French countryside. People wanted to imitate the style of richness and elegance brought on by the palaces in Paris, but put to practical and affordable use. That is where the modern Country French dining room style began. As a result, the world has adopted the style to reflect both elegance and frugality, with a warm blend of rustic nature that appeals to many modern homeowners.

Things That Set A Country French Dining Room Apart

There are a few key elements that make a Country French dining room unique. There are times where it may get mistaken for a similar style—French Rococo, for example—but understanding the features that make it special can help you distinguish it from the rest.

These include:

Natural colors. The French countryside inspires this design, so naturally, many colors reflect neutral browns, bright yellows, rusty reds, and soft whites. Sebring Tip: If your dining room is on the smaller side, opt for more brilliant colors. If your dining room is large, you can introduce darker earth tones.Natural materials. Surfaces and flooring should also be inspired by nature. Also, French Country dining rooms use plenty of light-colored wood and timbers for ceilings and floors. This style also makes use of stone.French Country dining room furniture is unique to its style. Moreover, the table and chairs can genuinely make or break the whole scene. Furniture made from reclaimed wood is a popular choice. Farmhouse-style is ideal for bringing your Country French dining room to life. Furniture should also be functional; for example, large cupboards or sideboards with storage space are worth considering.Soft patterns. French Country dining rooms are not shy of decoration or style. It’s common to find a space in this style with animal-print styles or floral decorations.

Many other elements make up a French Country style. From adding warm and gentle furnishings to filling the room with accessories, you can create a look that makes your dining room look “lived-in.” Natural light, earth tones, and rustic furniture are priorities to consider when transforming your living space.

Decorating Ideas For Country French Dining Rooms

The above elements can be expressed in many ways to create the traditional Country French dining room style. Take a look at the following images, each highlighting a different feature that makes this style so warm and familiar – without sacrificing its uniqueness.

Opposites Attract

Remember that the key to defining a French Country style is with the peaceful marriage of sophisticated and rustic. Combining these elements can be done the right way. Your French Country dining room table and chairs are simple, made of solid or reclaimed wood, in an authentic farmhouse style. This leaves the sophisticated elements to the decor. Add fanciness with the drape patterns, chair cushions, or kitchenware.

Lots Of Toile

Toile is known as a French cloth used for decorating. While it literally means “cloth” in French, it also describes a fabric typically in beige or white background and covered in a repeating pattern. The pattern can be in many shapes or styles but most often depicts nature scenes (trees, animals, or farmers). Having this kind of pattern for your French Country dining room furniture can add credit to its value.

Make A Lot Out Of Your Lighting

Keeping things simple at eye level is a good idea. That allows you to add more of a sophisticated twist to the upper levels of the dining room. A hanging, antique-style lantern in your dining room can completely set the mood of the whole room. Make it a truly eye-catching piece with bright colors and fancy framing. This will look especially good against the simplistic backdrop of exposed beam ceilings or reclaimed wood chairs.

CUSTOM

Giffin & Crane General Contractors, Inc.

Rustic but elegant look to French dining room.

Thick Beams and Wooden Accents

Speaking of exposed beams, this is one of the most famous architectural elements of a French Country dining room. Using distressed wood for the ceiling beams can give your home an antique look, immediately adding to its value. This also adds a touch of charm to a room that instantly makes it more inviting. A style like this can be accented well with stone flag flooring. Your rustic French Country dining room sets are what blend everything together in this chic yet savvy look.

Add A Real Rustic Touch

It’s one thing to make some of the elements of your dining room look rustic, but it may be of use to incorporate actual antique pieces into your room. For example, antique farm tools, kitchen utensils, or silverware can look good displayed on the wall. Put a vintage vase out as the centerpiece on your French Country dining room table to show that you want nothing less than the real deal.

Use Ornate Colors

The French Country style is all about using natural colors…but it’s also about being elegant and inspiring a scene from French royalty. Use ornate colors like gold and silver – but especially gold – as an accent for some of the decorative items in your room. Gold drapes, gold drawer handles, or a duvet color made from gold fabric can make you feel Parisian and chic.

Use Motifs

Perhaps one of the most famous historical elements of the French Country style is its motifs on the window panels. Adding motifs to any wooden framing or molding is a creative way to turn something regular into something unique. Inspire fanciness with traditional French motifs on your windows. Your window treatments should be one of the more elaborate elements of your French Country dining room, as you want it to stand out.

Make A Statement With Old And New

Again, it’s important to incorporate both elaborate and simplistic pieces into your dining room. When you are finished with your design, it should look like you sourced your French Country dining room sets from an upscale antique store or a quality flea market shopping spree. The perfect combination of high-end and homemade, of ultra-modern and antique, of calm and noisy, is what gives this style its own definition.

SOFT WHITE

COZY

Don’t Let the Patterns Overwhelm

It’s all too easy to get carried away with the diverse and multi-colored fabric patterns that the French Country dining room furniture style typically has to offer. And while almost any fabric pattern choice will help improve the look of your dining room, it’s essential not to use it too much. Adding just a little bit of something fancy and colorful—like toile fabric upholstered on the chairs, for example—can go a long way. It shouldn’t be so much that it becomes the entire focal point of the room. Leave that to your excellent dining set or your natural exposed beams!

Add Lots of Artwork

If it’s one thing the French Country style loves to do, it’s decorating the walls. Harkening back to the times of Louis XIV and the Palace of Versailles, one way to express the status of wealth was by hanging plenty of artwork on the walls. You can even imitate the style of the olden days by framing your portraits and paintings in large, gold-gilded wooden frames. Not only does it enrich the room, but it also gives it dimension.

Don’t Forget the Little Details

You can make something fancy out of even the most ordinary things. Adding those little details to the room can really bring it to life, giving it a warm and familial characteristic. Rustic decor pieces like an old wine rack are a unique focal point and a convenient storage space for your everyday items. Keep the furniture vintage, but you can marry rusticism with modernity with colorful seat upholstery. Think about what kind of light you want hanging above the table or what your centerpiece will look like. Use these little things as opportunities to add the vintage and rustic touches without making the room lose its poise.

Dark and Light

Bright colors in small rooms and dark colors in big rooms go a long way. But no matter what size your dining room is, you can add something both bright and vibrant. Dark-colored flooring goes great with white walls, white ceiling lights, and white French Country dining room sets. And vice versa; dark chandeliers, rich wood-colored furniture, and light floors with light-colored beams atop can make the room stand out.

Keep Things Symmetrical

It’s okay for the French Country to look a little asymmetrical at times, as this is part of its charm. But in some cases, and especially for large dining rooms, it might be wise to be symmetrical. The best way to keep the room in balance is to keep some of the focal points lined up. This can mean lining up your lanterns directly over the table, securing your rug in the middle of the room, or ensuring that there are an equal amount of decorations on each side of the room. While it doesn’t need to look so straight to the point of being static (you still want the room to look lived-in!), it can keep the eyes from getting too overwhelmed when entering such a bright and dynamic room.

Consider French Country In Your Kitchen!

French Country is a timeless style that will never steer you wrong. If you are considering remodeling your dining room, you can learn more about how the French Country style can work with you. 43 Stunning Wine Cellar Design Ideas That You Can Use Today

A great wine cellar is all about creating a controlled environment.  Whether it is located in a sprawling mansion or in a tiny apartment, design options are virtually limitless.  However, if temperature and humidity are not controlled properly, your precious wine may not age in the right way.

Our wine cellar ideas roundup showcases some of the most creative designs. If you are thinking of setting up your own wine cellar at home, these design ideas and guidelines should provide some inspiration.

Once you make a decision to build a wine cellar at your home, your first consideration should be maintaining the right conditions all the time. How you do this will depend on the size of the wine cellar and where it is located. A large basement wine cellar will require considerably more work in climate conditioning compared to a small wine cellar. If you opt for a pre-made wine closet or cabinet; chances are that it comes with climate control mechanism already installed, relieving you of most of the burden.

Here are some of the climate control actions you need to take when building a wine cellar:

Full room insulation to keep temperatures at a steady range. Make sure the insulation is also a good vapor barrier. For large wine cellars, a wine cooling system may be necessary. This will also require an adequately sized exhaust room to absorb expelled heat.If the location of the wine cellar tends to get too dry, a humidifier will be required.

Once you have the climate control part figured out, you are ready to get started on your wine cellar. Our home wine cellar image round up is a good starting point to help you figure out the design that works best for your needs and budget.

Wine Cellar Climate Control

Climate control will make or break your wine cellar. Wine is a delicate thing. It tolerates temperature and humidity changes only within a narrow band. If it goes above or below, then the aging process is likely to go awry.

When it comes to temperature, 55 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Celsius) is the accepted sweet spot. A range of 3-4 points above or below this temperature is acceptable. In chemistry, we learn that an increase in temperature increases the rate of reaction. If your wine cellar is too warm, your wine will age too quickly and produce other unwanted reactions. This will damage the quality and taste of the wine. On the other hand, if the conditions are too cool, chemical reactions slow down and your wine ages at a much slower pace.

There is also another aspect of temperature that can damage the wine and that is variability. Without proper climate control, temperatures in the wine cellar will keep swinging between cold and hot. In many cases, the cork sealing the wine is not 100% airtight. As it expands and contracts with temperature variations, oxygen finds its way inside the bottle. As any wine connoisseur knows, too much wine will damage wine flavors because of over-oxidation.

As for humidity, the slightly damp conditions of a basement are actually good. Slightly high humidity keeps the cork from drying out, which could compromise the quality of the seal. The ideal humidity level is 57%, with an ideal maximum of 70 percent and minimum of 50 percent. If it goes too high the biggest risk is the development of mold in the cork, which could damage the wine. Additionally, it can damage any labels on the wine bottle.

Proper Wine Storage Tips

No matter what wine storage design you choose, there are some essential basics to consider. Keep the following tips in mind to ensure your bottles are stored properly, which means more enjoyment when you finally pop the cork:

Keep the temperature stable. Wine doesn’t hold up well to major fluctuations in temperature. The longer you store your wine, the more stable the temperature its environment should be. So if you have a growing collection, and you’re waiting to open that bottle of Barbaresco until at least another five years have passed, then it’s best to choose a wine storage design that isn’t in a space that sees lots of changes in temperature (top of the fridge, we’re looking at you!). If you only keep enough bottles in the house for easy enjoyment, and drink your bottles within a few months after purchase, then temperature fluctuation is less of a concern.Keep the temperature cool. When possible, keep your wines stored somewhere within the cool range of 50°F to 59°F. This is often cited as the ideal temperature to store wine, though bottles can certainly withstand exposure to lower and higher temperatures. The essential idea is that heat accelerates the aging process, so as mentioned above, higher temperatures (though not exceeding 68°F) are less of a concern if you are simply buying wine to drink fairly quickly. A dedicated cool space is more important for long-term storage plans.Keep bottles away from intense light. Light, too, can play a big factor in the quality of wine. For wines that will be stored for more than a year, and for bottles of bubbly, it’s best to keep these away from direct, strong sources of light.Keep corks moist. When a bottle’s cork dries out, it shrinks and allows oxygen to creep inside. Oxygen is great for letting a wine breathe and develop its flavors, but a wine should be consumed shortly after exposure. Within a few days, oxygen turns even the sturdiest of wines into rancid vinegar. The easiest way to keep corks from drying out is to store bottles on their side.

Smart Storage: Take Advantage of Unused Spaces

Utilize existing furniture for smart storage: add custom shelving in a kitchen island or a buffet side table. Even the smallest nooks, like spaces between the refrigerator and wall, can be turned into clever wine storage spots. Remember, however, that warmer areas like the kitchen are best for people who aren’t storing wine bottles for the long haul.

The colorful kitchen island pictured here includes an impressive wine rack, while there is still plenty of additional cabinet space for storing china, pantry items, and smaller appliances. A sink built into the island, with easy access to the wine collection, makes this kitchen is a great spot for making drinks and entertaining guests.

Diagonal planks make the most of storage space, and are frequently used in wine cabinet and rack designs. The rack here is flanked by clear fronted cabinets, and the wet bar is complete with sink and beverage cooler. This basement bar design truly stands out thanks to the bright, backlit subway tile.

This elegant design is takes advantage of vertical space, with limited room under a kitchen counter making way for a small collection of wine bottles stored on their side. The crisp white lines of the wine rack are the perfect complement to the marble kitchen countertop.

This kitchen island highlights another example of vertical storage design. Instead of dedicating the entire end space to cookbooks, the island has shelving on either side of the clear fronted cabinets. It simple yet smart design holds up to ten wine bottles.

This basement kitchenette has additional overhead shelving to accommodate a well stocked wine bar. This remodeled interior features a richly hued, traditional cabinet design that feels bright and open. There is also plenty of countertop space for another rack for more storage options.

Sleek Wine Cooler Designs

Wine coolers are a great idea for any true wine lover, keeping bottles at a set temperature to ensure they keep well over time. Some models are dual-zone, meaning that you can store both red and white wines at different temperatures. Consider adding a wine cooler to your kitchen island, wet bar, or even outdoor entertaining area.

This unique wine cooler design is perfectly suited alongside the main refrigerator. The matching stainless steel appliances are the perfect complement to the kitchen’s traditional wood cabinets.

LONDON FARMHOUSE

Wine Cellar Ideas - Sebring Design Build

lhadeff Architects

This lovely wine cellar is located in a London farmhouse.

Location

The basement is one of the most common places to locate a wine cellar. It provides a large space to set up a decently sized wine cellar and is fairly easy to maintain in terms of temperature and humidity. Unlike other rooms in the house, the basement does not experience much variation in both temperature and humidity.

If you do not have a basement or it is being used for some other purpose, look for a corner of your house that is not in the direct line of sunlight or draft. One increasingly common and creative idea is to set up a mini-cellar under the stairs. Often enclosed by glass, under-the-stairs wine cellars can look quite dramatic especially when you plan the lighting properly. If you have a pantry with no windows, that would also make an ideal location for a wine cellar. If you have bar area, you can set up a small wine storage cabinet behind the bar.

Generally, the location depends on the size and design of your home. Wherever you decide to locate it, make sure you are able to control the conditions so as to maintain the integrity of the wine.

Storage

Once you have decided on location, you need to figure out what kind of storage you are going to use. Most people opt for wine racks. Wine racks come in a wide range of styles and some companies even offer custom made options.

Even in a small wine cellar, racks can take up surprisingly little space, allowing you to store a significant number of bottles in a limited area. Most wine racks are made from wood though you will come across other made from metal. Make sure you choose the right size. Some racks are small enough to be set down just about anywhere in the house. Others will take up an entire room. For really vast storage, such as one consisting of hundreds or thousands of bottles, consider getting custom wine racks that perfectly match your needs.  One other thing to be careful about when buying wine racks is the size of the opening. Some bottles such as Magnum and champagne bottles require large openings.

If you need smaller wine storage, there are many options beyond a wine rack. You can have a wine refrigerator small enough for 50 bottles or a bigger one for a couple hundred bottles or more.  Another option is a walk-in vault. These vaults are mini-cellars complete with built-in storage and climate control.  Other storage options include wine cabinets and wine lockers.

Design and Lighting

Design is an essential part of wine cellars. After all, the collection is a point of great pride for its owner. The design needs to reflect that. When designing a wine cellar, consider working with a contractor to decide on these design elements.

Many wine enthusiasts opt for hardwood flooring to match the wooden wine racks on the walls. Others opt for stone flooring to contrast with the wood racks and create a vintage style. Glass is also a popular material especially for enclosing smaller under-the-stairs wine cellars.

One of the most important aspects of the design is the lighting. There are two things to consider when deciding what kind of lighting to install. One is of course the style. Do you want a warm darker feel or a brighter futuristic vibe? A good idea is to install lights that can change color to reflect the current mood. The second issue is heat. Halogen or incandescent bulbs should never be used because they emit too much heat, which is bad for the wine. LEDs are the best. You can choose from puck lights, strip LEDs or track lights depending on the style you are going for.

Try to highlight specific areas such as wine racks and any other interesting displays. You can also have an assortment of overhead lights providing general illumination.

Bonus Tips

Here are a few extra tips to keep in mind:

Select a strong door that is insulated to protect the wine cellar climate. If you want a glass door, make sure it has exterior-grade insulation and should be double-paned. Ideally, a wine cellar should not have windows. If they are present, they should be as properly insulated as the door. For flooring, most materials including wood, tile, vinyl and marble are acceptable. The only no-no is carpet. It will develop mold and mildew because of the high humidity levels. For a large wine cellar, consider adding a tasting center. This often consists of a table and chairs. Add more seating space if you plan on holding tasting events often.Don’t forget about security. Always keep the door to the wine cellar locked to prevent any unauthorized individual from going inside. For really big collections, install a monitoring alarm system as well as cameras.

Setting up a wine cellar is no easy task. There are so many components to work on including storage, climate control, design and security. But if you love your wine, there is no end to the enjoyment after the wine cellar is complete. It becomes a personal sanctuary where you can relax, be happy and admire your priceless collection.

The fundamental hues are commonly dark—black, brown, gray, blue, and green. However, you can always include a few bright colors like yellow, red, or even purple if you like.

The selection of materials is significant for attractive men’s bedroom ideas on a budget. In particular, they ought to be rough yet, at the same time, still welcoming for both young men and young ladies. To clarify, men’s bedroom decorating ideas are usually very minimalist since the style suits manly quintessence very well.

In addition, rustic wood, rough concrete, and brick walls are some of the things that suit cool men’s bedroom ideas. Indeed, exemplary style is always in fashion—warm shades, vintage suitcases, and squared pattern instead of a nightstand is the style we’re aiming for. Furthermore, animal horns, prints, and different antlers would add some sexuality to any room.

Decorating Men’s Bedroom

For the man who is married or living with a partner, having the option to decorate your room may not always be the case. In any case, for men who are carrying on with the single life, one of the most significant rooms in the house is the bedroom. Thus, it should be stupendous.

Aside from the fact that we rely on the bedroom as a secluded sanctuary for relaxation, we also rely on its decor to assist us in other ways, like a cozy theater or a hangout after a romantic date.

Regarding design and style, there are numerous things one can do to make a room all the more welcoming. Similarly, from an attached walk-in closet to a bathroom with a Jacuzzi, a broad scope of floor plans is intended to give you the ideal refuge from the busy life. This section will discuss men’s bedroom decorating ideas rather than design and concentrate on the components you can add yourself without contracting a group of renovators.

Apparently, the most significant part of any bedroom, your bed, needs more attention and careful planning. In most cases, you need to choose your mattress and boxspring separate from the frame. With this in mind, while it’s impeccably worthy of purchasing a bundled bed, you’ll be given a more extensive scope of design components in case that you buy each part exclusively. Also, you will be more comfortable as the exceptional mattress providers more often than not sell their items independently.

Choosing Furniture For Men’s Bedroom Ideas

Besides the bed, furniture is a need for any bedroom. Obviously, the furniture expenses are cut if you have an existing built-in closet, but for many seasoned homes without walk-in closets, having chests, dressers, and cabinets is fundamental. As a base, you’ll need at least one huge dresser that can be utilized both for storage as well as a table for pictures or someplace to put your TV or stereo.

Also, it’s an insightful plan to have an end table on each side of the bed. Whether you don’t utilize them consistently, they help hold everything from a bedside valet to an alarm clock or table lamp.

In case your bedroom is massive enough, one thing worth considering is a tiny sitting area. For instance, this can be two seats by the window or a different living space with lounge chairs and an end table. In general, the room will consistently be your most unwinding and tranquil room in the house.

Moreover, having a region other than the bed to unwind in can be very quieting following a hard day at work. From sitting to watch TV to reading a novel or working, it’s one spot you won’t have guests in but will invest a lot of time without anyone around or with a special someone.

Color Palette

Ultimately, a room should be cohesive, and each piece should match agreeably with each component in the room. It’s flawlessly satisfactory to have feature walls or design elements that pop, but it must remain with the flow. Regarding settling on what scheme you need to go with, you need to consider a couple of things to make it work.

Use

Other than rest and sleep, what do you utilize your bedroom for? For instance, is it your library where you sit and read each afternoon, or do you use it for your romantic adventures every night? On the other hand, is it a home theater for late-night films or a play area for morning snuggles with your children? Surely, considering each of the bedroom’s essential uses is a surefire approach to guarantee it’s designed perfectly for your way of life.

Overall Style Of The Property

In case that the remainder of your house is minimalistic or modern, but your bedroom resembles a French palace during the 1600s, odds are you should think about a renovation. Although your bedroom is a different and private enclave, it should still, to some degree, reflect the remainder of your home.

Also, painting your bedroom wall dark when the rest of the house is light blue may be somewhat of a stun to the senses when you walk into your bedroom for the evening. Additionally, except if you’re Dracula, nobody wants to go with plain black walls.

You can also keep the summer heat at bay and simultaneously make your room more stylish by installing one if these ceiling fans
