A luxury walk-in shower creates a nice roomy feeling for your bathroom remodeling project. The lack of obstructions provides a seamless transition from the rest of the bathroom into the shower area. This is proof that you don’t need to put a lot of details to make your walk in shower extraordinary.

Various Luxury Walk in Shower Design Options

There are various design options for your walk in shower. One of the most common variations comes in the form of a glass enclosure, with the glass helping create a bright and airy feeling. For an even lighter effect, consider adding a window to the shower, if it is possible. If not, try a skylight. If neither of these is possible, an all-glass enclosure would be better because it remains bright enough even with artificial lighting only.

You can also opt for walk in shower designs without doors. Take a look at our bathroom remodeling ideas, compiled from our previous projects. You could have the other walls solid, glass-only or a solid base with a glass top half. One thing to note about the doorless walk in shower is that it does not allow for much privacy, and this is generally true for all walk in showers. If privacy is not your priority (or is already provided by other means) then a walk in shower is perfect.

Each design comes with its own logistical and construction headaches on issues such as drainage. So make sure you consider these when choosing what style to go for.

Luxury Walk in Shower Floor and Wall Designs

Like any other bathroom, you also have to consider the floor and wall design. If you plan to have a solid wall as part of your walk in shower, use a neutral tile color that maintains the airiness of the bathroom. One area where you can create a unique style is the back wall, which you can use as the focus of your walk in shower and bathroom as a whole. For instance, a nice stone mosaic back wall draws your attention to it immediately you set foot into the shower.

As for the floor, ceramic, stone and glass tiles are popular because they are waterproof. You can either choose a neutral walk in shower tile design that keeps up with the overall minimalist style or go for a unique eye-catching design to complement an equally attention-commanding back wall.

Finally, consider the role accessories play in the overall style and feel of your walk in shower. Circular showerheads create a warm traditional feel while square rainfall showerheads give the bathroom a more futuristic feel. Other accessories to consider include a soap dish, grab bars, a corner seat and a spa-style bench for larger walk in showers.

Things To Consider When Installing A Walk In Shower

We could spend all day looking at walk-in shower designs since they are so lovely! We used to obsess over them, figuring they were just destined for huge baths and fancy homes, but these stunning rooms have proven us wrong. It turns out that a walk-in shower may also function in a tiny bathroom. In fact, they are an excellent alternative for a small area because you eliminate the cumbersome tray and enclosure. They can also be used with any style, and you can currently find some really affordable designs.

Having a walk-in shower has various advantages. You will be able to use a small or awkward space where a bath or regular shower would not fit due to the lack of an appropriate enclosure. You’re also future-proofing your home by tanking the room because having waterproof surfaces will come in handy during bath time with little children.

A walk-in shower works nicely in a variety of bathroom designs. It’s a terrific alternative for small rooms because a standard shower enclosure can split up the area & make it look smaller than it is. A walk-in shower creates the sense of a larger room by providing a larger feel—primarily if you use a simple, frameless glass panel.

Because of their unobtrusive style, walk-in showers go in well with various bathroom trends. They add to the overall aesthetic and improve the overall design of modern bathrooms. They can lend a subtle contemporary edge to more classic bathrooms. You can design your walk-in bathroom in various colors, ranging from whites to dark blacks, to match any color scheme.

Select The Best Location For A Walk-In Shower

When preparing to install a walk-in shower, one of the first things to consider is the location of the drain. To reduce the chance of water escaping the room, the drain should be placed as far away from the bathroom door as feasible. If you have a hardwood subfloor, the location of your drain is determined by the way your joists run. To avoid any tricky wedging effects, you’ll also need to consider how the gradient falls towards the garbage will run.

Include An Elegant Partition In A Walk-In Shower

A walk-in shower divider may not be necessary in larger bathrooms, but to make them work in a compact area, you will most likely need something to keep water from splashing all over the place. Black Crittall-style shower partitions are incredibly trendy right now, and they appear to be in every bathroom on Instagram. They manage to make a statement while being subtle.

dd A Walk-In Shower To A Standard Bathroom

Walk-in showers appear to be associated with more modern bathrooms, although they can also be used in more classic bathrooms. The wall paneling in this bathroom is in keeping with the time, and the basic glass screen doesn’t break up the space or add anything too modern.

Take note of the shelves that have been incorporated into this walk-in shower; they are a terrific way to provide storage for your toiletries as well as decoration.

Make A Walk-In Shower Work Even In The Smallest Bathroom

As we mentioned, walk-in showers could be the greatest solution in a small bathroom. A shower enclosure would take up unnecessary space in this cramped space, whereas a walk-in shower offers a seamless look. The partition is a curtain on a sliding rail that can be placed against the wall when the shower isn’t in use, which is quite ingenious and looks fantastic.

Use Bold Tiles To Make A Walk-In Shower A Feature

A walk-in shower can be a focal point in your bathroom rather than a minor detail. Bold tiles are a great way to achieve this, and you don’t need to tile much of the area to create an impact; try tiling the back of your walk-in shower with a large statement pattern and keeping the rest of the room basic so the shower becomes the focal point.

Work Next To A Window With A Walk-in Shower

A window in a bathroom is a desirable feature, but it can limit where you can place your bathroom furniture. A walk-in shower avoids all of these issues since you can simply install a window in the shower—a functional solution that also looks great!

Make A Walk-In Shower Nearly Invisible

If you have a small bathroom, constructing a walk-in shower that fits seamlessly and nearly invisibly into your space is a smart idea. Match the shower tiles to the wall tiles and keep the surround slim and basic.

How Much Does It Cost To Install A Walk-In Shower

This is determined by the design chosen. For a simple tray & screen design, you can get a pre-fab unit for roughly $1,000, but the prices rise from there if you want something more opulent. You may pay anything from $8,000 and $15,000 for something completely customized.

You must also consider the cost of installation. It depends on how much plumbing work you require, but it might cost between $2,000 and $2,500 if pipes need to be replaced. You should factor in the expense of waterproofing the room, which is likely to be roughly $1,000. The cost of tiles and labor to install them should also be accounted for—obviously, this will vary depending on the tiles you select, but on average, you should spend $2,000.

What Material Is Best For A Walk-In Shower

When selecting a material for your walk-in shower, you have many alternatives. Ceramic tiles or glass are some of the most popular shower wall options since they come in a variety of styles and are easy to maintain. Marble and natural stone also work well, but they can be expensive, so it all depends on your budget.

The ideal material for the walk-in shower flooring depends on your design—if you want a shower tray, you can select between acrylic and ceramic. If you’re going to tile the floor to match the rest of your area, you may need to be more selective.

Instead of a shower tray, opt for a walk-in shower or wet room, which enables the floor tiles to run to the shower area, adding visual space to a room. However, not all surfaces are suitable for usage in a wet environment, and it is critical to understand the slip rating of the material. To provide increased traction in damp situations, I recommend utilizing a material with a structured, textured finish. Mosaics are also an excellent choice for damp places since the grout lines between the tiles provide adequate grip.

Glass is usually an excellent choice for a bathroom. Glass, which is both transparent and reflecting, can make a space feel brighter and more expansive. Water-resistant marble appearance tiles may look truly sophisticated in wetrooms, and they also come in a variety of hues ranging from dark to light.

If you love spacey, bright and airy bathrooms, the luxury walk in shower could be just what you need. Despite its minimalist feel, there are numerous design styles to choose from. We have given you a few ideas above to get your creative juices flowing.

39 of the Best Wainscoting Ideas for Your Next Project

Sebring Design Build

Wainscoting provides the perfect mix of function and style by adorning the lower half of walls while also protecting the wall from scuffs and smudges. This form of wall paneling started back in 1300s primarily as a way to shield the lower half of plaster walls from damage from things like chairs and boots. Today, they make up an important part of interior design, helping add some warmth and style to a space. Wainscoting is especially great at styling up bare walls that would otherwise look dull and boring.

Traditionally, wainscoting (typically pronounced as Wayne’s-Coating) is made from solid wood panels. But these days, there is so much more variety in materials. You can get it in plastic, plywood or medium fiber board (MDF). For more money per square foot, you can get yourself custom made hardwood wainscoting panels. Other materials used, though less commonly, include stone, tile and acrylic.

Wainscoting Installation

While you can install your own wainscoting during your home renovation if you know your way around with tools, it is always best to hire a contractor to do a perfectly neat wainscoting installation. To save time and money, you can buy pre-made wainscoting panels so that the only work will be installing them onto the wall.

There are numerous styles, colors and patterns to choose from, ensuring that you can find something to match your décor. For instance, you can choose a recessed type of panel, raised panel or shaker panel.

The decorating ledge is awesome in this boy’s bedroom. Plus the varying sizes of the rectangle and square detail in the wainscotting makes it more interesting.

Wainscoting Height

An important part of wainscoting is its height. This greatly defines its look and how it impacts the overall style of the room. When planning a wainscot installation, the first step is to measure the height you want it to reach. Here are a few pointers on how to Measure Your Walls for Wainscoting Panels.

Generally, the wainscoting goes up to a 1/3 of the wall height. This is not a rigid rule; you can place it lower or higher depending on your specific décor preferences.Determine the height of the bottom wainscoting railing, which usually starts at 7.5 inches.Measure the width of the wall and divided it by the number of panels you want, determining the size of each panel.

For more accuracy, ask your contractor to help you take the wall measurements. Use these measurements in buying the right wainscoting panels and molding.

Ideas For Wainscoting

Wainscoting used to serve a simple utilitarian purpose. Back in the 18th century, before central heating, putting the wood to the lower part of a wall was an elegant and inconspicuous way to insulate a space. But just because wainscoting isn’t needed to keep your home warm doesn’t mean it’s lost its allure. With the correct combination, this once-outdated element can feel shockingly new and current.

What Is Wainscoting?

Wainscoting (or paneling) is a wall covering usually used for decorative purposes to provide architectural detail to an interior area.

Wainscoting was initially employed for two reasons: to insulate the chilly stone walls of ancient houses and to keep moisture out.

That is no longer the case, and the purposes and materials employed have developed significantly throughout the years.

Material Used For Ideas For Wainscoting

The chosen material in 18th century Europe was light oak wood, but today it spans from other types of wood to plastic and fiberboard.

Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) engineered wood is a popular paneling material because it is denser than plywood and easier to work with.

dvantages And Disadvantages

Wall panels are stylish and sophisticated. Consider luxurious flats and cottage houses throughout the ages.

They were found in medieval homes, as well as in Georgian and Victorian interiors.

Throughout history, they were seen as beneficial and fashionable, and they expanded all the way to America and European colonies abroad.

So paneling your home is a timeless style statement.

Wainscoting also serves two practical purposes: panels can conceal wall flaws while remaining repairable and interchangeable.

They can conceal abnormalities, protruding wires or cables, and even prevent wetness.

Wainscoting also helps to insulate the walls on the interior.

Even if you don’t have a moisture problem, your room could benefit from some soundproofing or thermal insulation to keep you warm in the winter.

Panels, on the other hand, require more care than many other types of walls.

Under certain conditions, wood can rot, distort, or lose moisture.

Of course, wall panels can be fixed or replaced. However, homeowners should still take care of them by ensuring that they are properly mounted and not deformed by external forces, painting them with the appropriate paint, or waxing them if the room conditions are too dry.

Another questionable disadvantage of wainscoting is its age.

While some consider them to be classy, many say they do not necessarily go well with a cleaner, minimalist modern style.

Wainscoting can be quite contemporary and modern-looking, as evidenced by our collection of over 30 ideas.

Types Of Wainscoting

There are several varieties of panels, including flat and raised panels, beadboard, and board and batten.

Typically, when we think of wainscoted walls, we think of panels.

Beadboard

Wainscoting with beadboard is an exception to this norm.

It is made up of panes that are mounted vertically next to one other and separated by a narrow bead (ridge).

Wainscoting panels are made out of a frame (rails and stiles) with a flat panel inside.

They might be flat (flat panel wainscoting) or elevated (raised panel wainscoting) (raised panel wainscoting).

The only distinction between the two kinds is the panel itself, not the frame.

Batten And Board

Board and batten wainscoting is made up of broader boards alternated with narrower battens.

This style adds informality to wainscoting and is even used for building exteriors.

The battens’ role is to provide strength to the structure.

Final Thoughts:

With so many styles to choose from, you are assured of finding one that is perfect for your home. Remember to get a style that will blend in well with your existing room décor and which you love. With the right choice, you can transform an ordinary kitchen or living room into a chic yet homely space.

Let Your Creativity Fly

Do not be bound so much by functionality and practicality that you forget about making the basement a fun place to be in. While playing it safe with the rooms above is understandable, let the space below be your own personal canvas. Try out a crazy theme, a cool wall art, a unique color pattern, or anything else that comes to mind.

Check out some cool basement ideas we have compiled below, in addition, you can take a look at our own Before & After Finished Basement Remodeling Ideas portfolio.  Included below is everything from themed finished basement ideas to small finished basement ideas.

On to the planning phase. Planning is essential to achieving the right finish for your basement. A good idea is to use one of the many online tools to create a cad drawing of the room. Put in the wall color, seat arrangements, and anything else you want to have an idea of how the basement will look.

Even if you do not use an online tool, plan extensively beforehand as to exactly what you plan to do. What color will the wall be? Will you put in any art? What flooring style will you go for? If your budget allows, you can consult an interior designer for recommendations. One advantage of such planning is that it allows you to set out a budget that you can work within, ensuring that you are not caught short of cash in the middle of your project.

Tips For Nailing Finished Basements Ideas

When most people envision their basement, they envision an unfinished place filled with cobwebs, odd trash, and cold concrete. Many homeowners fail to recognize the potential. Consider a fully realized area, tailored to fit into your ideal home, an extension of the quality and personality you instill in the rest of the house.

Designing Finished Basement Ideas

It’s a big step from an underutilized unfinished basement to a completely restored and finished basement. Before beginning building, there are numerous options to consider. One of the most enjoyable aspects of renovating is creating your unique vision. Whether you want to use modern basement ideas or functional basement ideas, the new room will reflect your unique creative touch. If you give yourself a few hours, you might be astonished at how many innovative basement designs you can come up with.

Home Theater System

When it comes to basement design, nothing beats the classics. This classic feature enhances the luxury and value of your home. Consider a cozy night in with friends and family to watch the latest blockbuster in the comfort of your own home theater.

Workout Room

This is the ideal complement for the multi-functional individual. With this function, you’ll never have to pay for another monthly gym membership. Make the most of your healthy living by investing in a fully equipped home gym perfectly suited to your workout requirements.

Recreational Area

In this relaxing area, recline in your favorite chair. Consider a room that has been specifically designed for technology-free leisure. There’s a pool table, a foosball table, a dartboard, a handmade board game table, a pingpong table, and more just down the stairs.

Dry Or Wet Bar

What better way to relax after work than with a refreshing beverage from the comfort of a personalized bar? This area can also serve as a terrific entertainment component for a lively get-together with friends and family for any occasion.

n At-Home Office

This practical basement design is ideal for those who have L-shaped basement floor plans. While optimizing productivity, enclose your workspace in a personalized home office. Go upstairs to leave your work at home.

Craft Shop

A multi-purpose craft room is a terrific little finished basement concept if you need extra space for hobbies. Building storage features and installing useful fixtures are wonderful methods to personalize your home makeover for this type of redesign.

dditional Living Area

As a family grows, the room becomes increasingly scarce. Creating a completely new area with new rooms and living areas ensures that your family will fit, no matter how large it becomes. Even modest basements can contain one or two additional rooms.

Basement Essentials

Whatever your creative orientation, there are certain elements that every basement redesign must include in order to improve the area. When planning your redesign, make sure you don’t overlook any of the following important details:

• An abundance of high-quality lighting fixtures.

• A bathroom, either full or half.

• Additional storage for unused furniture and objects; and

• An open concept design.

Basement remodeling can be stressful, and understandably so. But the styling aspect will provide some much-needed fun. Seeing your newly finished basement take shape as the flooring is installed and the walls painted will be exciting and there is no feeling like seeing it come to life as furniture is put into place and light fixtures are installed.

A man cave is a personal sanctuary where you can indulge your hobbies and guilty pleasures with freedom. It provides personal space for much needed me-time especially if you have a big family and busy days, as well as a great selling point for potential buyers. The best thing about it is that you have complete control over the aesthetics. So however crazy or unique you want the design to be, you can have it all.

There are three important factors to consider when planning a man cave; location, style and furnishings.

Location

The location of your man cave will depend a lot on where you can get extra space in the house. In many cases, the basement makes a perfect location. When properly refurbished, it is cozy and well insulated from the racket of the kids above. If you have no basement in your home or if it is being used for another function, there are plenty of great garage man cave ideas too. You can also use an extra room, an unused bedroom, or a secluded area in the house. If you have limited space to use as a man cave, don’t worry, there are some creative man cave ideas for small rooms below.

Wherever you locate it, what is most important is the feeling of privacy and personal space.

Man Cave Room Ideas

This is the most important part of the man cave. Be as creative, as crazy, and as unique as you want. The most common starting point is to decide what theme you want dominating the room. This will depend on your hobbies and activities. Some create replicas of submarines or airplane cockpits. Some fill their man cave with film or music regalia. It all depends on your passions. The trick is to create a theme that feels right at home with you, one that makes your heart race a bit every time you step inside the man cave.

Make sure that everything from the wall color, to the style of furnishings, to the flooring are aligned with a specific theme. While we have numerous man cave room ideas below to get your creative juices flowing, you should also check out our home remodeling ideas.

Furnishings and Accessories

A man cave is a home within a home. As such, it must be well accessorized to become a livable space. Furniture such as a sofa and recliner are a must. Also consider putting in a fridge, microwave, drinks bar (if size allows) and bar stools.

If you are a sports or movie lover, make space for a large screen TV. A pool table, poker table, or dart board are also great additions especially if you plan on having guests over often.

Other accessories include sports memorabilia, wall art, and personally crafted items.

Time to dig into the cool man cave ideas we have collected below and start planning for your own man cave.

Man Cave Ideas At Home

When you like to get away from the stresses of contemporary life for a while, nothing beats a relaxing vacation to your man cave. These treasured areas allow us to slow down in a fast-paced environment and recharge our batteries for men. For many men with families, the man cave may be the only place in the house they can genuinely call their own. It is a location that is specifically designed for masculine energy and interests.

Our man caves are also personal sanctuaries where we may honor the various memories we’ve amassed throughout the years. It’s where we keep the things that are most important to us, such as our trophies, photographs, and even the baseball card collection we’ve had since we were kids. A man cave is similar to a closet. It is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your distinct style and individuality.

Man caves are, of course, great places to entertain. Home theaters, sports rooms with pool tables, and even indoor basketball courts are just a few of the ways that men use their man caves to unwind with friends after a long day at work.

Your man cave may become your ultimate at-home hideaway, whether it’s utilized to decompress after a long day at work, watch the big game, hang out with a group of friends, or get in a workout. Check out these ideas for establishing a man cave if you’re looking for ways to create your hangout at home!

Where To Put Man Cave Ideas

This is entirely up to you! Your ultimate man cave might be built in a variety of locations, depending on what you want to build and the available space in your home. These are only a few examples.

ttic Or Flex Room

Don’t know what to do with an attic or bonus room? Convert it into a man cave! Not only does this make use of previously unused space, but it can also provide your man cave extra privacy!

Basement

Basements offer privacy for your man cave! With a basement, you can have an entirely different décor and atmosphere from the rest of the house, allowing you to personalize it.

Garage

Because there is no carpet or furniture to worry about in this area of the house, a garage man cave can be a fantastic place for a home gym, workshop, or art studio where you can get a bit dirty!

Backyard Or Patio

The backyard is a wonderful place to barbeque, sit by the pool, play yard games, or simply enjoy the weather. If you enjoy spending time outside, a patio or deck could be the ideal location for your man cave!

Outbuilding Or Shed

Your man cave does not even have to be connected to the rest of the house! A detached building in the backyard can be converted into a man shed, ideal for loud activities like cheering at a game, using power tools, or playing instruments.

Extra Bedroom

Do you have an additional bedroom that you aren’t using? Underutilized spare bedrooms or other underutilized areas in the home are blank canvases begging to be transformed into a man cave!

By now, you must be brimming over with your own man cave ideas, or at the very least, you have found one or two ideas worth considering. If you are ready to go ahead with creating a man cave, we are here to help. We know more than a little about interior design and home remodeling. Our experience and expertise would come in handy in creating the coolest man cave of your dreams. Feel free to head to our basement finishing page for more info.

Kitchen Shiplap Options

Kitchen remodeling can get a little bit complicated when it comes to installing shiplap. For one, there are plenty of tight spaces and corners to work around including cabinets, outlets and other appliances. There are also issues of heat and water that must be considered.

For those who opt to go the DIY route, precision measurements are crucial in the kitchen. You might also want to think about a waterproof finish for shiplap that is likely to be in contact with water. Additionally, consider using tile for the backsplash as it is much better at repelling water and is easier to clean.

Like the living room, you can decide to use the shiplap on a specific part of the wall, making it the focal point. For example, you can use it on backside of the breakfast bar, the side where family members and guests sit. You can also install shiplap vertically in the spaces between upper cabinets.

Where Can You Use Shiplap?

Essentially, anywhere in your house.  From the bathroom, to the stairs, to the hallway; the options are endless. One of the advantages of shiplap siding is that it can be customized to fit any space, big or small. We have listed some great spaces you can use shiplap below.

Shiplap in Your Living Room

If your living room walls feel a bit lacking in warmth and style, shiplap is the perfect addition. You can choose to accent a single wall or install on all the walls in the room. Considering that this is the center of your home, it makes sense to make it as warm and cozy as possible.

Note that some areas such as the place around the fireplace may require another material (such as tiles or stone) that can withstand the heat and is easier to clean. While the traditional style is to lay out the planks or boards horizontally, you can decide to put them up vertically for a more unique style. You can leave the wood exposed with all its spots and pockmarks for a realistic cottage look. Bonus tip: exposed shiplap really goes well with exposed beams for a nice quaint look. Works great for a living room, home library, or home office.

To enhance its effect, you can finish shiplap with white paint. This looks especially good in homes with large windows where plenty of natural light streams in. It almost feels like you are sitting outside a farmhouse somewhere in the countryside.

Have you ever seen one of those cozy cottages in movies and wished you could live in one? Well, you would have to build your own cottage, but there is a cheaper and quicker way to create a similar effect in your home by using shiplap cladding. In recent years, there has been increased interest in shiplap-focused interior décor. Shiplap has appeared on HGTV shows, filled up interior décor blogs, and appeared in numerous magazine pages. In our latest home improvement guide, we take a look at Shiplap cladding, what it is and how you can use it in your home. It is one of those home improvement projects that should take you a single weekend and not too much money to complete.

What is Shiplap?

Shiplap is a type of wooden board traditionally used on the exterior of buildings. It is an effective and inexpensive way to clad a building and protect it against weather elements, especially water. Homeowners have recognized the beauty of shiplap and over time, it has found a place in the warm interiors of many homes.

When used inside, it creates a cottage-like, farmhouse or shabby chic effect. It is especially good at turning a dull and cold space into a warm, cozy and welcoming interior. You can use it to accent a specific part of a room such as the wall around the hearth, the space above the tub or the area above your bed. Alternatively, it can be used more extensively to panel entire rooms such as the bathroom, living area, or bedroom. There are numerous creative ways you can use shiplap in your home. We will go through them shortly.

If by the end of this guide you area leaning toward some shiplap for your own home, you have two installation options; you could DIY it or call in a professional. As a DIY project, it’s difficulty is moderate and you will need an extra hand or two to help. But if you are not sure, we always recommend letting a professional handle it.

Bedroom Shiplap Designs

Here the options are numerous. One common style that we see as a favorite for many homeowners is using shiplap to accent the wall behind the bed. By contrasting it with the other walls, it almost feels like a large headboard.

Related: 5 Reasons to Convert Your Basement Into a Bedroom For Your Teen.

A dull bedroom can be instantly transformed by installing shiplap all-round and painting them in a warm relaxing color. A unique style that can also be applied to shiplap in other rooms is to use more than one plank along a single row. The seams created where two planks join come together to create a stylish masonry effect.

Trendy Shiplap Bathroom Ideas

While shiplap tends to result in a countryside/cottage look in other spaces, it creates a trendy beach effect in the bathroom.

You could fill up the entire bathroom with shiplap paneling or use it on specific areas. For instance, shiplap installed just above the bathtub creates a cozy space to take a bath in. You can also install it on a single wall, above the cabinet area, and wherever else you see fit.

Because of moisture issues, it is highly recommended that you buy shiplap that has already been primed. This reduces moisture absorption by the boards ensuring that they last. It is also a good idea to skip shiplap in the shower, where running water can easily cause damage, although if chosen in that space, it is quite an amazing look.

Woman/Man Cave or She-Shed Shiplap Options

The versatility in style of shiplap allows you to choose a design that fits your man/woman cave theme. If you are going for the chic-look, watch for wood that has been aged distressed by wind and water.

Types of Shiplap

Traditionally, cheap wood such as pine was used in making shiplap boards. Today, homeowners have a range of material options to choose from. The most common is real wood, where your planks of wood are installed stack-style along the height of a wall. Real wood is especially ideal if you are planning to leave it exposed but it can also be a bit pricey.

Other less expensive options include plywood, MDF or hardboards. With these, you might have to apply a nice finish on top, such as painting, to create the full cottage effect. You can find these materials at most home stores including Home Depot.  Shiplap can also be categorized depending on their design. Some types of shiplap consist simply of planks of wood, MDF or plywood. Other types come with a design that allows them to fit snugly into each other. They are referred to as tongue and groove shiplap.

If you are doing a DIY installation, it is important that you understand the different types of shiplap and how installation varies among them.

Shiplap Wainscoting Works Everywhere

Instead of the traditional wood paneling for your wainscoting, why not try using shiplap? It creates a nice decorative effect, with unique detailing. Shiplap can work on all kinds of wainscoting from one that stretches to just a few inches above the crown molding to one that goes past half the wall height. Instead of the usual horizontal stack-style shiplap, you can also put the planks in a vertical design.

Shiplap in the Basement

One of the challenges of basement remodeling is turning it into an adequately warm and comfortable space. Shiplap is a perfect solution. If the basement is well insulated, you do not have to worry about moisture damaging the shiplap boards.

Whatever you decide to turn the basement into, whether a bedroom, family room, kitchenette, bar, or home cinema, shiplap makes for a perfect addition to the walls and ceiling or both.

Ceilings With Shiplap Installed

Shiplap is not just for the walls, you can also use it for the ceiling. Just as shiplap walls give a room the perception of more space, shiplap ceiling creates the feeling of more depth. For an even more spacey effect, extend the shiplap on the walls to the ceiling.

There are plenty of things you can do with ceiling shiplap. Painting it white spreads light around, enhancing the depth feeling. Leaving the shiplap exposed creates a spacious farmhouse style. Giving it an aged finish adds a vintage air to the home. A blue-painted shiplap ceiling brings a clear blue sky right into your home.

Of course the mechanics of installing shiplap on the ceiling are a bit different and can be more challenging than installing shiplap on the walls. If you are not sure of your handy skills, it is best to hire a professional.

Pros and Cons of Shiplap

Shiplap Advantages

One of the best things about shiplap is that it brings dramatic change without requiring a big investment in money and time. You can spend a single weekend putting up shiplap siding on a wall and less than $500 but the effect will be priceless. It changes the room drastically; producing a look that, using other methods, would have cost thousands of dollars.

Another advantage is the simple installation. Whether you are using plain planks, MDF, or tongue and groove shiplap, the installation process is fairly simple and straightforward. If you have someone to help you that has the right tools, you can do a quick and easy installation. There is no ripping out walls or messing around with utilities. Additionally, as many homeowners would agree, it is a pretty fun home improvement project to fill up your weekend.

Even if you opt to call a professional, the installation cost will not be too much. The décor benefits of shiplap are very worthwhile and with just several planks, a plain room transforms into a magazine-worthy space full of character. A cold bedroom suddenly overflows with warmth. A dull bathroom instantly feels like it has been built on a beach. A boring home office turns into a dreamy workspace that spurs your creativity.

Another advantage is its flexibility. It can be used in a wide range of applications both inside and outside the home. Just to mention a few that we have already shown above, it can be used for the ceiling, wainscoting, full wall paneling, creating a wall accents and so on.

Overall, shiplap is an efficient, highly effective, and inexpensive way to renovate your home.

Exterior Shiplap Cladding

While shiplap is better known for its use in interior décor, it was first used in exterior cladding. With a light finishing, you can also use shiplap on the outside of the house. In some climates you can include it in the porch, an outdoor sitting area, an outdoor kitchen, and exterior wall cladding.

Disadvantages of Shiplap

There are a few downsides and concerns we must make note of. One, shiplap in certain areas like the bathroom and kitchen are at a bigger risk of damage because of the moisture. Without proper finishing, the wood will start to warp or even rot.

Another problem arises when you need to repair damage to the shiplap or the wall underneath. Usually, it becomes necessary to remove a large chunk of the shiplap even for simple damage repair.

The world of interior design never stays still; new ideas and innovations keep coming. Shiplap is one of the best interior décor ideas you can use in your home. If not for any other reason, just the fact that it creates the exact style you want without draining your bank account.

To get the best out of shiplap our best advice is to be creative. There are many more ideas and ways to use shiplap at home than those we have highlighted above. Using this inspiration, find a design and style that is perfect for your home and go for it.

[Cleaning Tips] How to Clean 4 Types of Pillows

A high-quality pillow is a must for a good night’s sleep, but if the pillow is used for a long time, human secretions like sweat, saliva and grease could infiltrate and contaminate the pillow core, inducing the growth of mould. Therefore, regular cleaning of the pillow is very important. Pillow-cleaning is a hot topic on the internet, if you would like to know how to clean different types of pillows in different ways, let us share all of them with you here.

Interior Design: Happy Roof Interior

Four Common Pillow Types

Memory Foam Pillow(Space Cotton Pillow)Down PillowDurabilityAverageLongAdvantagesProvide good supportWill not deform easilyThe high degree of adherenceSoftWarmth-keepingPermeableWill not deform easilyDisadvantagesSlow heat dissipationNot washableThe hardness will change according to temperature and timeWeak supportNot washableNot suitable for people with respiratory allergies

Cleaning Methods

It is generally recommended that pillows be cleaned every three months to six months. While not all pillows can be washed and dried under the sun, so we must pay attention to the washing label of the pillow. If an unsuitable cleaning method is used, the life span of the pillow will be shortened, and it will be more likely to deform and lose its support. We will describe the correct cleaning method for the above four types of pillows.

Interior Design: Rezt n Relax Interior

Memory Foam Pillow (Space Cotton Pillow) Cleaning

Memory Foam cannot be cleaned with washing machines and dryers since the high temperatures will damage the tissues such as sponge and polyurethane and cause deformation. Therefore, we can only use a vacuum cleaner with a dust-mite removal function to remove dander and dust. In addition, memory foam pillows usually come with a washable protective cover, so we only need to clean that protective cover.

Latex Pillow Cleaning

Natural latex pillows are high-end pillows, which are generally more expensive, so we must handle them with care. It cannot be washed with washing machines and dryers since the latex will be torn if treated with force. On the other hand, washing with water will make the latex wet and even if the outer layer dries off, the numerous small holes in the inner layer may not be able to dry out completely. At the same time, high temperatures will also make the latex pillow brittle, so it should not be exposed to the sun.

Therefore, the cleaning method of the latex pillow is the same as that of the memory foam pillow, we only need to use a vacuum cleaner with the function of removing dust mites to absorb dander and dust, then place it in a cool place.

Down Pillow Cleaning

The advantage of down pillows is that they are soft and good at warmth-keeping since they are filled with animal hair. As it is animal fibre, we only need to expose it under the sun and air-dried in a position with good ventilation for sterilization and removing moisture and smell. Unlike down jackets, down pillows are not recommended to be washed in order to prevent the fluff from forming into balls due to water and losing the original shape of the pillow.

Polyester Pillow Cleaning

Polyester pillows are man-made fibres, very commonly used, relatively cheap and easy to clean. The gentle mode of the washing machines can be used to clean polyester pillows and they can be dried under the sun or in a clothes dryer. However, if you use a washing machine to clean and dry, please do not use long-term mode.

Tips for Machine-washing Pillows

Regardless of the type of pillow, if the laundry label states that your pillow can be machine washed, here are a few tips to keep in mind if you would like to extend the life span of your pillow:

Avoid using washing powder as if the washing powder does not dissolve, it will remain in the pillow, so it is better to use liquid detergent.Unlike laundry, pillow washing does not need to use softener as it will damage the bulkiness of the pillow.Consider washing two pillows at the same time to make the washing machine rotates more evenly.Pillows must be washed in a gentle mode since strong pulling and rotation may cause the pillow to deformIf you can use a clothes dryer to dry the pillows, the temperature should not be too high

Interior Design: Elique.co

The Life Span of Pillows

Even if you keep your pillows clean, pillows are always consumables, so pillows need to be replaced regularly to avoid losing support and worsening sleep quality. The following is the recommended replacement time for different types of pillows:

Memory Foam Pillow(Space Cotton): 2-3 yearsLatex Pillow: 2-3 yearsDown Pillow: 2-3 yearsPolyester Fiber Pillow: 3 months

63 Awesome Sliding Barn Door Ideas

The 50 Best Pictures of Barn Doors - Sebring Design Build

Featured Image Source: Natman.com via nj.com

Barn doors are not just for barns anymore. From the countryside barns, these wide sliding doors have entered the house to become popular interior décor pieces. From cozy bedrooms to rustic home offices and perfect room dividers, barn-style doors are all the rage for homeowners.

Why Sliding Barn Doors?

Barn doors come with both functional and aesthetic benefits. Functionally, they are big space savers. The traditional swinging door typically needs 9 feet or more of space to function properly. While this may not be an issue for large houses, more space-starved homes will find it more than a little problematic. They need all the space they can get for furniture, appliances and movement. Nine feet is a lot of space to leave to the door. French doors, as beautiful as they are, are even bigger space gobblers.

TRANSITIONAL DINING

Nest Designs LLC

Red barn door with a full view of the dining table.

In a small space where every single inch counts, sliding barn doors come in handy. A well installed sliding barn door offers great space economy for whatever room you use it in. Of course, you need to have enough adjacent wall space for the barn door to slide over when it is opened. But this is often preferable to similarly space-saving pocket doors that require much more work to install or remove.

A small disadvantage with sliding barn doors is that they may not close as quietly as traditional doors. But a good contractor should be able to install it in such a way that noise is reduced to a minimum.

Other Sliding Barn Door Advantages

Another advantage of sliding barn doors is their support system. Sliding barn doors use a track for movement. The entire weight of the door is therefore distributed along the length of the track. This allows for the installation of heavier-than-usual doors without affecting stability of ease of movement. For places that need more security but are limited in space, a heavy sliding barn door would work just fine.

There is also, of course, the aesthetics side of the sliding barn door craze. Some sliding barn doors have this rustic outdoorsy feel that creates a stunning contrast when indoors. This contrast is especially enhanced if the door is styled in a worn, rustic design that makes it seem like it was taken right from the barn outside and installed inside.

Things To Consider Before Installing Sliding Barn Doors

Sliding barn doors are a big trend in interior design, owing primarily to the growing popularity of farmhouse-style homes. A sliding barn door is a door that can be installed anywhere in the house and typically consists of a wood or metal door hung on a sliding track. It glides to the side and hangs neatly against the wall, rather than opening and closing like a standard door. People adore them because they can easily change an area while also adding a lot of personality.

Timeless vs. trendy

Although sliding barn doors have been around for a long time, they have recently gained a “trendy” reputation. And, like with any trend, before buying in sliding barn doors, you should carefully analyze your motivation. There is a considerable difference between truly adoring a style and liking it because it is the fashionable thing to do at the time. Ask yourself, “Am I still going to adore these five years from now?” and “Will this house be worth anything when I sell it in a few years?” You’re good to go if you are able to see long-term potential.

Do you have sliding barn doors in your home?

Before doing any home improvement project, you must evaluate your home’s style. Traditional barn doors can complement a farmhouse, coastal, or traditional property. If you put them in a mid-century or modern home, they will seem completely out of place. There are also other styles of sliding barn doors available, each with a unique appearance. A more minimalist home, for example, might benefit from metal French-style sliding barn doors, but a modern home would benefit from a more streamlined metal.

Will you be able to have enough privacy?

This is a crucial aspect to think about when installing DIY barn doors: Privacy and sound. Sliding barn doors, unlike standard doors, do not block off the bulk of sound and noise. Remember that you will hear more sound through a sliding barn door than a standard swing door, because the edge isn’t as tightly sealed. In terms of privacy, you won’t be able to lock a sliding barn door in place, which could be inconvenient if you’re attempting to keep your family or roommates out!

Is the size of your door header proportionate?

Before beginning this DIY barn door project, keep in mind that a proportionate header is essential. A header is a substantial piece of wood that acts as an anchor for your barn door, distributing the weight and increasing stability. It also improves the aesthetic value. A proportionate header is critical for decorative hardware when decorating the opening. I feel that a simple block-finished edge with no additional ornamental trim is the easiest to execute, and it creates a clean, modern-cased opening for the barn door to be the major accent.

Is your hardware in sync?

Coordination of hardware on a barn door is more about function than appearance. Remember, the hardware and door must extend past the opening, so make sure you have enough space and position the hardware, so the door slides past the wall base. The door should be wider than the opening, with the hardware on the outside edge.

Final Thoughts:

Sliding barn doors can undoubtedly give a stylish touch to your property. Remember that if you do decide to install one, preparation is essential. If sliding barn doors aren’t for you, don’t worry!

5 Questions to Ask Every Home Remodeling Contractor Before You Meet

5 Questions to Ask Every Home Remodeling Contractor Before You Meet

Creative Boom

We receive 900 to 1000 new customer calls a year here at Sebring.  These calls can range from adding extra space in a basement to redesigning a dated kitchen into a chef’s dream.

Our process begins with a 15 to 20 minute conversation.  During this initial conversation we ask 5 key questions of our clients:

When do you want the renovation to start and end the project. Why are you renovating (more space, aesthetics…).Where are you renovating (kitchen, bathroom, entire house…).What changes do you want to make (change cabinets, new flooring…).How much are you planning to spend on the remodeling.

From there, we end up scheduling an in-home consultation with the 300 to 350 qualified clients. Approximately 70% of the people that call us are not the right fit for our project niche.

So what makes a client “qualified” or a project “not the right fit”?  These are great questions and things you should be focused on when interviewing contractors.  The days when any contractor was good at doing any type of remodeling to your home are gone.  The Jack of all trades tends to be the master of none. You will end up paying a lot of your hard earned money for a sub-par job. Hopefully, you won’t have to spend even more when you need repairs later on to fix the issues from the first time.

Hiring the best contractor for your project takes time to research and ask the right questions. But meeting with contractors can be a significant time commitment for both you and all involved.  So before you set up an appointment, it’s best for you to ask a few key questions over the phone to help ensure that an in-person meeting will be time well spent.

1. Am I Located in Your Service Area?

questions-to-ask-every-home-remodeling-contractor-before-you-meet-sebring-design-build

Pixabay

Not every contractor will travel across the entire Chicago Metro area.  Most have restrictions based on travel time.  Here at Sebring Design Build we try to keep our service area within a 40 minute driving radius around Naperville.  This covers areas like Oak Brook, Hinsdale, Elmhurst and most of Batavia.

We have found that keeping projects to a limited geographical area typically means a faster response time, which you should consider a plus.  Being close to your house means better customer service and you do not have to wait hours for us to arrive after making a call.

If you are located outside a remodeling contractor’s service area, consider asking them for a recommendation of another company that is closer. You can also do some research on your own before you start contacting contractors. Using Google (or other apps, such as Yelp), you can easily locate home remodeling contractors near you. But do not be afraid to contact your preferred contractor if they are located further away than is recommended. They just might make an exception for you depending on your type of project.

2. Is My Project Something You Specialize In?

Many contractors restrict the type of projects they will do. Keep in mind, this is a good thing!  The Jack of all trades with his fingers on everything is a bad idea for your home and your pocket. Before you call any contractors, write down on paper a short description of your project.  For example “I want to remodel our small kitchen and it will involve removing some structural walls.”  Not every home remodeling contractor has experience dealing with relocating of load bearing walls.

So ask the question and make sure your project is something they are interested in working on and that they are setup to handle as well. While a phone call is not the place to elaborate on the details, be careful not to leave out something that can help the contractor decide whether they can take on your project. Try to provide a short but exhaustive summary of what the project entails.

It is also worth asking whether the contractor has completed many such projects in the past. Knowing that a contractor is skilled and experienced in your specific type of renovation will give you peace of mind.

Questions-to-Ask-Every-Home-Remodeling-Contractor

3. Can You Complete My Project by My Deadline?

questions-to-ask-every-home-remodeling-contractor-before-you-meet-sebring-design-build

Canva

This can be a difficult question for a contractor to answer because it involves how quickly the client can make decisions and not just how fast the contractor works. Some homeowners are really good at making selection and design decisions quickly, while other homeowners need time to think about these things.  There is also the issue of plans and permits, which may take several months before they are ready, especially for extensive renovations.

While a contractor may be able to give you a rough range of time, a more certain timetable can only be prepared after a full in-person consultation at your home. And even then, adjustments to the timetable may need to be made in the course of the project.

Remember two things:

A good home remodeling contractor should be in demand and typically carry a backlog of work.Rushing through the design process can ruin a project, so take your time. If you need the project completed quickly, you can talk with your contractor and see whether there are ways things can be speeded up without compromising the quality and integrity of the work done

4. Why are You a Home Remodeling Contractor?

questions-to-ask-every-home-remodeling-contractor-before-you-meet-sebring-design-build

Canva

This may sound like a weird question, but the more you get to know “each company’s why”, the more you will connect with the right company to hire.  I tell our clients all the time, in the beginning, treat the meetings and phone calls with contractors like a first date.  Would you want to see this person and their staff every day for 2-6 months? They will be ‘invading’ your personal space every day and things can get a bit testy over time, if you do not have a good relationship.

Find out why they love doing what they do, find out their mission statement, and their beliefs. Make sure their beliefs line up with yours, because when you sign that agreement, you enter into a marriage of sorts.  This marriage can be a long term trusting relationship or it can end in a nasty divorce.  And the only ones that are happy in a divorce are the lawyers.

5. My Budget Range for this Project is in a Range of $X to $Y.  Is this Realistic?

We use budget ranges to help our customers down a path of less frustration, almost like a restriction plate on a race car.  Good designers have a lot of great ideas, but if you can’t afford these exotic materials or designs, why waste your time.

Talking about money can be uncomfortable, but it’s important, particularly if you have a specific amount you want to spend.  So do your research on approximate remodeling pricing, so that you that you feel more confident in your discussions. Find out how much similar remodels in your area cost and then decide what budget range you are most comfortable with.

Be honest with your contractor!  If you don’t trust the contractor with this important information, you shouldn’t move forward with them. Do not be shy about discussing the possibility of lowering the budget range. A good contractor will work with you to see what can be realistically achieved with less cost.

If you are looking for a great website that can help with budgeting check out: Remodeling Magazine: Remodeling Magazine: Cost vs. Value.

One last tip

Make sure to have a phone conversation, not an email.  You really need to get an idea if your personalities will fit. Email doesn’t give you an idea of how they will be in person. So make sure to have a frank, honest conversation. By the end of the call you should be able to answer these two questions:

Is this contractor qualified to do my project. Will the company be the right fit.

6 Questions to Ask Before Starting a Bathroom Remodeling Project

Questions-to-Ask-Before-a-Bathroom-Remodeling-Project

Most people have no trouble imagining what would be in their dream bathroom–and it’s different for everyone. Some people have a vision of the entire bathroom, while others simply know what feature they’d like to add, but everyone can think of at least one thing that they’d love to have in their bathroom.

A bathroom renovation is the perfect opportunity to change it up and create at least a portion of that dream–but there are a few questions you’ll want to ask before you get started.

While upgrading a bathroom is at the top of many homeowners’ wish lists, total renovations can be costly—up to $18,000 or more, depending on the size of the bathroom and the fixtures chosen.

To make the most out of your bathroom renovation, first, assess your needs and desires to make informed decisions. These six crucial questions can assist homeowners in avoiding renovation regret—or, worse, do-overs. Do you like to get it right the first time? Continue reading to learn what you should think about before starting your bathroom remodeling project.

How Much Space Do You Have To Work With

6-questions-to-ask-before-a-bathroom-remodeling-project

Canva

Bathrooms come in all shapes and sizes. Some of them have enough room for you to give your creativity free rein, while others have only enough space for the bathroom necessities. Before you start thinking about your dream bathroom, take a minute to look at the space that you actually have to work with. This will prevent the potential for costly mistakes down the line.

Many bathrooms have less square footage than other areas in the home, yet they must contain a wide range of necessities, from shampoo to toilet cleaning and from guest towels to toothpaste. While there may not be enough area in a bathroom for a full linen closet, you can add storage by thinking outside the box.

How Much Storage Do You Need?

questions-to-ask-before-a-bathroom-remodeling-project

Canva

If you have plenty of storage outside your bathroom, you don’t have to worry about cabinets and shelves–though you will want to make sure that you have plenty of room for all of your toiletries. On the other hand, if you don’t have a big enough linen closet to hold your extra towels, toilet paper, and other bathroom necessities, you’ll want to make sure that there’s plenty of storage room built into your bathroom. There are several ways to do this that don’t take up space that you’d rather be using for other things, including shelves and tower cabinets, but it’s definitely something that you should consider as you’re designing your dream bathroom.

Shower, Tub, Or Both?

questions-to-ask-before-a-bathroom-remodeling-project

Canva

While some bathrooms have plenty of room for a huge tub and a stand-alone shower, others only have the space for one. Which one you choose will depend on your needs. Many individuals with mobility impairments prefer to have a walk-in shower, while people who appreciate a good soak in a tub might not want a shower at all. The shower or tub will take up more space in your bathroom than any other fixture, so you’ll end up designing a lot of your space around it. That means that you should be clear on your preferences ahead of time. Be realistic when making this decision. If you really prefer baths to showers but find that much of the time, you’re hurrying through your bathing routine in the shower, you might need that shower more than you think. If you have small children, on the other hand, giving up the bathtub altogether probably isn’t a wise decision.

If a homeowner has the privilege of having more than one bathroom in the house, having a walk-in shower if you can in one of them is an excellent option. Have you already had a shower elsewhere in the house? Then, in the current renovation, a tub is usually sufficient. Otherwise, you should add a walk-in shower, if only as a long-term investment.

How Is The Room Shaped?

questions-to-ask-before-a-bathroom-remodeling-project

Canva

Sometimes, bathrooms are constructed around other areas of the house or given a strange shape to make room for pipes. You’ll have to work around the room’s shape when making decisions for your bathroom’s design.

What Features Are Most Important To You?

questions-to-ask-before-a-bathroom-remodeling-project

Canva

Whether you have a limited budget or a limited amount of space, there will come a time when you have to make decisions about what you “have” to keep and what you’re willing to let go of. If you’re desperate for a luxury shower, that might be the primary focus of your renovation.

Need A Seat In Your Shower?

questions-to-ask-before-a-bathroom-remodeling-project

Canva

Building it in might mean that you decide to give up a bathtub. The amount of water pressure you like in your shower will determine what fixtures are appropriate within it. If you’re designing a bathroom for your children to share, two different sinks might be an ideal way to put an end to bedtime bickering. Decide ahead of time what features are most important so that it will be easier to make decisions about what you really need.
