[Cleaning Tips] How to Clean 4 Types of Pillows

A high-quality pillow is a must for a good night’s sleep, but if the pillow is used for a long time, human secretions like sweat, saliva and grease could infiltrate and contaminate the pillow core, inducing the growth of mould. Therefore, regular cleaning of the pillow is very important. Pillow-cleaning is a hot topic on the internet, if you would like to know how to clean different types of pillows in different ways, let us share all of them with you here.

Interior Design: Happy Roof Interior

Four Common Pillow Types

Memory Foam Pillow(Space Cotton Pillow)Down PillowDurabilityAverageLongAdvantagesProvide good supportWill not deform easilyThe high degree of adherenceSoftWarmth-keepingPermeableWill not deform easilyDisadvantagesSlow heat dissipationNot washableThe hardness will change according to temperature and timeWeak supportNot washableNot suitable for people with respiratory allergies

Cleaning Methods

It is generally recommended that pillows be cleaned every three months to six months. While not all pillows can be washed and dried under the sun, so we must pay attention to the washing label of the pillow. If an unsuitable cleaning method is used, the life span of the pillow will be shortened, and it will be more likely to deform and lose its support. We will describe the correct cleaning method for the above four types of pillows.

Interior Design: Rezt n Relax Interior

Memory Foam Pillow (Space Cotton Pillow) Cleaning

Memory Foam cannot be cleaned with washing machines and dryers since the high temperatures will damage the tissues such as sponge and polyurethane and cause deformation. Therefore, we can only use a vacuum cleaner with a dust-mite removal function to remove dander and dust. In addition, memory foam pillows usually come with a washable protective cover, so we only need to clean that protective cover.

Latex Pillow Cleaning

Natural latex pillows are high-end pillows, which are generally more expensive, so we must handle them with care. It cannot be washed with washing machines and dryers since the latex will be torn if treated with force. On the other hand, washing with water will make the latex wet and even if the outer layer dries off, the numerous small holes in the inner layer may not be able to dry out completely. At the same time, high temperatures will also make the latex pillow brittle, so it should not be exposed to the sun.

Therefore, the cleaning method of the latex pillow is the same as that of the memory foam pillow, we only need to use a vacuum cleaner with the function of removing dust mites to absorb dander and dust, then place it in a cool place.

Down Pillow Cleaning

The advantage of down pillows is that they are soft and good at warmth-keeping since they are filled with animal hair. As it is animal fibre, we only need to expose it under the sun and air-dried in a position with good ventilation for sterilization and removing moisture and smell. Unlike down jackets, down pillows are not recommended to be washed in order to prevent the fluff from forming into balls due to water and losing the original shape of the pillow.

Polyester Pillow Cleaning

Polyester pillows are man-made fibres, very commonly used, relatively cheap and easy to clean. The gentle mode of the washing machines can be used to clean polyester pillows and they can be dried under the sun or in a clothes dryer. However, if you use a washing machine to clean and dry, please do not use long-term mode.

Tips for Machine-washing Pillows

Regardless of the type of pillow, if the laundry label states that your pillow can be machine washed, here are a few tips to keep in mind if you would like to extend the life span of your pillow:

Avoid using washing powder as if the washing powder does not dissolve, it will remain in the pillow, so it is better to use liquid detergent.Unlike laundry, pillow washing does not need to use softener as it will damage the bulkiness of the pillow.Consider washing two pillows at the same time to make the washing machine rotates more evenly.Pillows must be washed in a gentle mode since strong pulling and rotation may cause the pillow to deformIf you can use a clothes dryer to dry the pillows, the temperature should not be too high

The Life Span of Pillows

Even if you keep your pillows clean, pillows are always consumables, so pillows need to be replaced regularly to avoid losing support and worsening sleep quality. The following is the recommended replacement time for different types of pillows:

Memory Foam Pillow(Space Cotton): 2-3 yearsLatex Pillow: 2-3 yearsDown Pillow: 2-3 yearsPolyester Fiber Pillow: 3 months

63 Awesome Sliding Barn Door Ideas

The 50 Best Pictures of Barn Doors - Sebring Design Build

Featured Image Source: Natman.com via nj.com

Barn doors are not just for barns anymore. From the countryside barns, these wide sliding doors have entered the house to become popular interior décor pieces. From cozy bedrooms to rustic home offices and perfect room dividers, barn-style doors are all the rage for homeowners.

Why Sliding Barn Doors?

Barn doors come with both functional and aesthetic benefits. Functionally, they are big space savers. The traditional swinging door typically needs 9 feet or more of space to function properly. While this may not be an issue for large houses, more space-starved homes will find it more than a little problematic. They need all the space they can get for furniture, appliances and movement. Nine feet is a lot of space to leave to the door. French doors, as beautiful as they are, are even bigger space gobblers.

In a small space where every single inch counts, sliding barn doors come in handy. A well installed sliding barn door offers great space economy for whatever room you use it in. Of course, you need to have enough adjacent wall space for the barn door to slide over when it is opened. But this is often preferable to similarly space-saving pocket doors that require much more work to install or remove.

A small disadvantage with sliding barn doors is that they may not close as quietly as traditional doors. But a good contractor should be able to install it in such a way that noise is reduced to a minimum.

Other Sliding Barn Door Advantages

Another advantage of sliding barn doors is their support system. Sliding barn doors use a track for movement. The entire weight of the door is therefore distributed along the length of the track. This allows for the installation of heavier-than-usual doors without affecting stability of ease of movement. For places that need more security but are limited in space, a heavy sliding barn door would work just fine.

There is also, of course, the aesthetics side of the sliding barn door craze. Some sliding barn doors have this rustic outdoorsy feel that creates a stunning contrast when indoors. This contrast is especially enhanced if the door is styled in a worn, rustic design that makes it seem like it was taken right from the barn outside and installed inside.

Things To Consider Before Installing Sliding Barn Doors

Sliding barn doors are a big trend in interior design, owing primarily to the growing popularity of farmhouse-style homes. A sliding barn door is a door that can be installed anywhere in the house and typically consists of a wood or metal door hung on a sliding track. It glides to the side and hangs neatly against the wall, rather than opening and closing like a standard door. People adore them because they can easily change an area while also adding a lot of personality.

Timeless vs. trendy

Although sliding barn doors have been around for a long time, they have recently gained a “trendy” reputation. And, like with any trend, before buying in sliding barn doors, you should carefully analyze your motivation. There is a considerable difference between truly adoring a style and liking it because it is the fashionable thing to do at the time. Ask yourself, “Am I still going to adore these five years from now?” and “Will this house be worth anything when I sell it in a few years?” You’re good to go if you are able to see long-term potential.

Do you have sliding barn doors in your home?

Before doing any home improvement project, you must evaluate your home’s style. Traditional barn doors can complement a farmhouse, coastal, or traditional property. If you put them in a mid-century or modern home, they will seem completely out of place. There are also other styles of sliding barn doors available, each with a unique appearance. A more minimalist home, for example, might benefit from metal French-style sliding barn doors, but a modern home would benefit from a more streamlined metal.

Will you be able to have enough privacy?

This is a crucial aspect to think about when installing DIY barn doors: Privacy and sound. Sliding barn doors, unlike standard doors, do not block off the bulk of sound and noise. Remember that you will hear more sound through a sliding barn door than a standard swing door, because the edge isn’t as tightly sealed. In terms of privacy, you won’t be able to lock a sliding barn door in place, which could be inconvenient if you’re attempting to keep your family or roommates out!

Is the size of your door header proportionate?

Before beginning this DIY barn door project, keep in mind that a proportionate header is essential. A header is a substantial piece of wood that acts as an anchor for your barn door, distributing the weight and increasing stability. It also improves the aesthetic value. A proportionate header is critical for decorative hardware when decorating the opening. I feel that a simple block-finished edge with no additional ornamental trim is the easiest to execute, and it creates a clean, modern-cased opening for the barn door to be the major accent.

Is your hardware in sync?

Coordination of hardware on a barn door is more about function than appearance. Remember, the hardware and door must extend past the opening, so make sure you have enough space and position the hardware, so the door slides past the wall base. The door should be wider than the opening, with the hardware on the outside edge.

Final Thoughts:

Sliding barn doors can undoubtedly give a stylish touch to your property. Remember that if you do decide to install one, preparation is essential. If sliding barn doors aren’t for you, don’t worry!

5 Questions to Ask Every Home Remodeling Contractor Before You Meet

5 Questions to Ask Every Home Remodeling Contractor Before You Meet

Creative Boom

We receive 900 to 1000 new customer calls a year here at Sebring.  These calls can range from adding extra space in a basement to redesigning a dated kitchen into a chef’s dream.

Our process begins with a 15 to 20 minute conversation.  During this initial conversation we ask 5 key questions of our clients:

When do you want the renovation to start and end the project. Why are you renovating (more space, aesthetics…).Where are you renovating (kitchen, bathroom, entire house…).What changes do you want to make (change cabinets, new flooring…).How much are you planning to spend on the remodeling.

From there, we end up scheduling an in-home consultation with the 300 to 350 qualified clients. Approximately 70% of the people that call us are not the right fit for our project niche.

So what makes a client “qualified” or a project “not the right fit”?  These are great questions and things you should be focused on when interviewing contractors.  The days when any contractor was good at doing any type of remodeling to your home are gone.  The Jack of all trades tends to be the master of none. You will end up paying a lot of your hard earned money for a sub-par job. Hopefully, you won’t have to spend even more when you need repairs later on to fix the issues from the first time.

Hiring the best contractor for your project takes time to research and ask the right questions. But meeting with contractors can be a significant time commitment for both you and all involved.  So before you set up an appointment, it’s best for you to ask a few key questions over the phone to help ensure that an in-person meeting will be time well spent.

1. Am I Located in Your Service Area?

questions-to-ask-every-home-remodeling-contractor-before-you-meet-sebring-design-build

Pixabay

Not every contractor will travel across the entire Chicago Metro area.  Most have restrictions based on travel time.  Here at Sebring Design Build we try to keep our service area within a 40 minute driving radius around Naperville.  This covers areas like Oak Brook, Hinsdale, Elmhurst and most of Batavia.

We have found that keeping projects to a limited geographical area typically means a faster response time, which you should consider a plus.  Being close to your house means better customer service and you do not have to wait hours for us to arrive after making a call.

If you are located outside a remodeling contractor’s service area, consider asking them for a recommendation of another company that is closer. You can also do some research on your own before you start contacting contractors. Using Google (or other apps, such as Yelp), you can easily locate home remodeling contractors near you. But do not be afraid to contact your preferred contractor if they are located further away than is recommended. They just might make an exception for you depending on your type of project.

2. Is My Project Something You Specialize In?

Many contractors restrict the type of projects they will do. Keep in mind, this is a good thing!  The Jack of all trades with his fingers on everything is a bad idea for your home and your pocket. Before you call any contractors, write down on paper a short description of your project.  For example “I want to remodel our small kitchen and it will involve removing some structural walls.”  Not every home remodeling contractor has experience dealing with relocating of load bearing walls.

So ask the question and make sure your project is something they are interested in working on and that they are setup to handle as well. While a phone call is not the place to elaborate on the details, be careful not to leave out something that can help the contractor decide whether they can take on your project. Try to provide a short but exhaustive summary of what the project entails.

It is also worth asking whether the contractor has completed many such projects in the past. Knowing that a contractor is skilled and experienced in your specific type of renovation will give you peace of mind.

3. Can You Complete My Project by My Deadline?

questions-to-ask-every-home-remodeling-contractor-before-you-meet-sebring-design-build

Canva

This can be a difficult question for a contractor to answer because it involves how quickly the client can make decisions and not just how fast the contractor works. Some homeowners are really good at making selection and design decisions quickly, while other homeowners need time to think about these things.  There is also the issue of plans and permits, which may take several months before they are ready, especially for extensive renovations.

While a contractor may be able to give you a rough range of time, a more certain timetable can only be prepared after a full in-person consultation at your home. And even then, adjustments to the timetable may need to be made in the course of the project.

Remember two things:

A good home remodeling contractor should be in demand and typically carry a backlog of work.Rushing through the design process can ruin a project, so take your time. If you need the project completed quickly, you can talk with your contractor and see whether there are ways things can be speeded up without compromising the quality and integrity of the work done

This may sound like a weird question, but the more you get to know “each company’s why”, the more you will connect with the right company to hire.  I tell our clients all the time, in the beginning, treat the meetings and phone calls with contractors like a first date.  Would you want to see this person and their staff every day for 2-6 months? They will be ‘invading’ your personal space every day and things can get a bit testy over time, if you do not have a good relationship.

Find out why they love doing what they do, find out their mission statement, and their beliefs. Make sure their beliefs line up with yours, because when you sign that agreement, you enter into a marriage of sorts.  This marriage can be a long term trusting relationship or it can end in a nasty divorce.  And the only ones that are happy in a divorce are the lawyers.

5. My Budget Range for this Project is in a Range of $X to $Y.  Is this Realistic?

We use budget ranges to help our customers down a path of less frustration, almost like a restriction plate on a race car.  Good designers have a lot of great ideas, but if you can’t afford these exotic materials or designs, why waste your time.

Talking about money can be uncomfortable, but it’s important, particularly if you have a specific amount you want to spend.  So do your research on approximate remodeling pricing, so that you that you feel more confident in your discussions. Find out how much similar remodels in your area cost and then decide what budget range you are most comfortable with.

Be honest with your contractor!  If you don’t trust the contractor with this important information, you shouldn’t move forward with them. Do not be shy about discussing the possibility of lowering the budget range. A good contractor will work with you to see what can be realistically achieved with less cost.

If you are looking for a great website that can help with budgeting check out: Remodeling Magazine: Remodeling Magazine: Cost vs. Value.

One last tip

Make sure to have a phone conversation, not an email.  You really need to get an idea if your personalities will fit. Email doesn’t give you an idea of how they will be in person. So make sure to have a frank, honest conversation. By the end of the call you should be able to answer these two questions:

Is this contractor qualified to do my project. Will the company be the right fit.

6 Questions to Ask Before Starting a Bathroom Remodeling Project

Questions-to-Ask-Before-a-Bathroom-Remodeling-Project

Most people have no trouble imagining what would be in their dream bathroom–and it’s different for everyone. Some people have a vision of the entire bathroom, while others simply know what feature they’d like to add, but everyone can think of at least one thing that they’d love to have in their bathroom.

A bathroom renovation is the perfect opportunity to change it up and create at least a portion of that dream–but there are a few questions you’ll want to ask before you get started.

While upgrading a bathroom is at the top of many homeowners’ wish lists, total renovations can be costly—up to $18,000 or more, depending on the size of the bathroom and the fixtures chosen.

To make the most out of your bathroom renovation, first, assess your needs and desires to make informed decisions. These six crucial questions can assist homeowners in avoiding renovation regret—or, worse, do-overs. Do you like to get it right the first time? Continue reading to learn what you should think about before starting your bathroom remodeling project.

How Much Space Do You Have To Work With

6-questions-to-ask-before-a-bathroom-remodeling-project

Canva

Bathrooms come in all shapes and sizes. Some of them have enough room for you to give your creativity free rein, while others have only enough space for the bathroom necessities. Before you start thinking about your dream bathroom, take a minute to look at the space that you actually have to work with. This will prevent the potential for costly mistakes down the line.

Many bathrooms have less square footage than other areas in the home, yet they must contain a wide range of necessities, from shampoo to toilet cleaning and from guest towels to toothpaste. While there may not be enough area in a bathroom for a full linen closet, you can add storage by thinking outside the box.

How Much Storage Do You Need?

questions-to-ask-before-a-bathroom-remodeling-project

Canva

If you have plenty of storage outside your bathroom, you don’t have to worry about cabinets and shelves–though you will want to make sure that you have plenty of room for all of your toiletries. On the other hand, if you don’t have a big enough linen closet to hold your extra towels, toilet paper, and other bathroom necessities, you’ll want to make sure that there’s plenty of storage room built into your bathroom. There are several ways to do this that don’t take up space that you’d rather be using for other things, including shelves and tower cabinets, but it’s definitely something that you should consider as you’re designing your dream bathroom.

Shower, Tub, Or Both?

questions-to-ask-before-a-bathroom-remodeling-project

Canva

While some bathrooms have plenty of room for a huge tub and a stand-alone shower, others only have the space for one. Which one you choose will depend on your needs. Many individuals with mobility impairments prefer to have a walk-in shower, while people who appreciate a good soak in a tub might not want a shower at all. The shower or tub will take up more space in your bathroom than any other fixture, so you’ll end up designing a lot of your space around it. That means that you should be clear on your preferences ahead of time. Be realistic when making this decision. If you really prefer baths to showers but find that much of the time, you’re hurrying through your bathing routine in the shower, you might need that shower more than you think. If you have small children, on the other hand, giving up the bathtub altogether probably isn’t a wise decision.

If a homeowner has the privilege of having more than one bathroom in the house, having a walk-in shower if you can in one of them is an excellent option. Have you already had a shower elsewhere in the house? Then, in the current renovation, a tub is usually sufficient. Otherwise, you should add a walk-in shower, if only as a long-term investment.

How Is The Room Shaped?

questions-to-ask-before-a-bathroom-remodeling-project

Canva

Sometimes, bathrooms are constructed around other areas of the house or given a strange shape to make room for pipes. You’ll have to work around the room’s shape when making decisions for your bathroom’s design.

What Features Are Most Important To You?

questions-to-ask-before-a-bathroom-remodeling-project

Canva

Whether you have a limited budget or a limited amount of space, there will come a time when you have to make decisions about what you “have” to keep and what you’re willing to let go of. If you’re desperate for a luxury shower, that might be the primary focus of your renovation.

Need A Seat In Your Shower?

questions-to-ask-before-a-bathroom-remodeling-project

Canva

Building it in might mean that you decide to give up a bathtub. The amount of water pressure you like in your shower will determine what fixtures are appropriate within it. If you’re designing a bathroom for your children to share, two different sinks might be an ideal way to put an end to bedtime bickering. Decide ahead of time what features are most important so that it will be easier to make decisions about what you really need.

This multipurpose equipment has the ability to drill, bore, grind, and turn.

25 Different Types Of Drills

1. Eggbeater Hand Drill

This is a gear-driven drill with a rotating driving wheel that spins when the handle is rotated. Once the wheel begins to spin, the drill travels in lockstep with the chuck, which causes the bit to rotate. This manual tool excels in drilling small holes in wood and metal.

2. Breast Drills

These tools operate in a manner similar to eggbeater hand drills, with the exception that they come equipped with a plate affixed to their back. This plate enables you to provide greater drilling pressure during operation by pressing against the drill with your chest. As a result, breast drills are more effective than eggbeater hand drills.

3. Brace Drill

The brace drill features a U-shaped spindle that provides for increased torque generation when cranking. Additionally, it has another spindle at the top that allows you to hold and align the tool. When working with wood, the brace drill is used to countersink.

4. Bow Drill

This item is also referred to as a fire drill, as it is capable of starting fires without the need of matches. The bow, hearth, spindle, and bearing block are all included. It generates heat through friction, which results in the formation of an ember in sawdust.

5. Crank Drill

The crank drill’s high helix angle increases its penetration efficiency, allowing it to cut deep holes in difficult materials. Additionally, it features a sharp tip that enhances its cutting capabilities. Crank drills are one of the few manual drills that are suitable for drilling into hard metals such as steel.

6. Gimlet

A gimlet is an extended drill bit equipped with rotation handles. This tool makes use of leverage to drill deep and wide holes. By extending its handles, you can generate additional force.

7. Push Drill

The push drill is a more powerful but smaller counterpart of the hand drill. It is equipped with a spiral ratchet that is used to rotate the bit. This drill is utilized in tasks requiring a high degree of accuracy or precision in woodworking.

8. Post Drill

They acquire their name from their mounting on posts. These hand-powered presses are capable of boring holes into iron, albeit the size and depth of those holes are determined by the operator’s strength.

9. Table Drill

This general-purpose drilling machine offers a large and solid working surface for your materials. However, because it is dependent on your strength, it may not be ideal for heavy-duty drilling.

Powered Drills

Powered drills have motors that power their activities. They are far more powerful than manual drills and do not necessitate any physical effort on your behalf. As a result, they are suitable for serious do-it-yourselfers and professionals alike. They are as follows:

10. Cordless Drills

Because these machines are battery-powered, they are extremely portable and may be used anywhere. Cordless drills, on the other hand, have the lowest power output of any powered drill type. Nonetheless, there are some very strong ones that are extremely pricey. Another downside of cordless drills is their short battery life. These drills are perfect for casual home users as well as professionals working on off-grid job sites.

11. Corded Drills

Corded drills are more powerful and lighter than cordless drills. They must, however, be attached to a wall socket at all times in order to function, which severely limits their portability. Despite this, they are excellent electric drills for heavy-duty use in the workshop.

12. Reversible Drills

These drills may rotate both clockwise and counterclockwise. As a result, they are ideal for quickly and effectively tightening and loosening screws.

13. Impact Drills

Impact drills are ideal for heavy-duty woodworking applications. This is due to the fact that, unlike ordinary drills, impact drills begin hammering the material when they face resistance, allowing them to cut holes in tougher materials. Nonetheless, they are bad at screw fastening since they have a tendency to jam fasteners into the surface.

14. Hammer Drills

The hammer drill receives its name from its working mechanism, which is characterized by a continual pounding motion. Hammer drills, like impact drills, are awful at fastening. They are, nevertheless, quite good at drilling holes in extremely hard objects.

15. Rotary Hammer Drill

This drill is most commonly used in masonry. It has an additional grip for enhanced control. The fundamental difference between it and a standard hammer drill is that it accelerates the drill bit with pistons rather than cam plates.

16. D-Handle Drills

A D-handle drill is essentially a hammer drill with the trigger located at the rear rather than the front. D-handles are equipped with powerful motors that enable them to create continuous speed and power. They are also utilized in mixing applications, in addition to drilling.

17. Combination Drill

This instrument, sometimes known as a combi drill, can be used as both an impact and a hammer drill. As a result, it is an excellent bargain for someone who requires both. Combination drills can also be used on soft and tough materials.

18. Mechanic Drill

A mechanic drill has a versatile design that allows it to be used for both light and heavy-duty tasks. As a result, rather than purchasing separate drills for softwood and metals, a single mechanic drill should suffice.

19. Auger Drill

This is a bigger drill used to drill holes in the ground. It is available in both one- and two-person variants. The motor is located above the bit and is controlled by huge grips.

20. Core Drill

When drilling huge holes in walls or surfaces, a core drill comes in helpful. They have a secondary grip and a safety clutch for improved handling and safety.

Pneumatic Drills

Pneumatic drills, sometimes known as jackhammers, are powered by compressed air. They are incredibly strong, making them perfect for heavy-duty applications like drilling in rocks or breaking up pavements. Pneumatic drills are appropriate for usage in potentially explosive situations. Among these drill kinds are:

21. Straight Air Drills

Straight air drills have a tiny chassis that makes them excellent for usage in small locations. Furthermore, they are excellent alternatives to standard power drills since, despite their size, they produce more power.

22. Gun Handle Drill

Straight air drills are not as effective as gun handle drills. As a result, they are ideal for industrial applications. They are the most often used form of corded drill.

Heavy-Duty Drills

A drill press is the greatest option if you run a workshop that handles a lot of heavy-duty drilling because they are massive and powerful. Among them are:

23. Portable Drill Press

It is also known as a benchtop drill press and has smaller proportions than regular drill presses, making it an excellent alternative for do-it-yourselfers. It can, however, hold its own in an industrial setting.

24. Floor Drill Press

The tabletop drill press is a larger and more powerful variant of the benchtop drill press. For drilling long and solid objects, the floor drill press is suitable.

25. CNC Drill Press

This multipurpose equipment has the ability to drill, bore, grind, and turn. Because it can be programmed, it is commonly used in mass production companies to generate accurate holes.

How To Choose From Different Types Of Drills

Consider how you will utilize your drill. Before purchasing a drill, consider what you intend to use it for.

Consider the following questions:

What surfaces will you have to drill into?Do you need to be able to position or hold it in a specific way (for example, at a straight angle)? Will you have to move around with it a lot, whether it’s climbing ladders or walking back and forth on the ground? How long will you need to use your drill at a time?

Answering questions like these will help you narrow down what you’re searching for in a drill.

Determine Whether You Want A Corded Or Cordless Drill

Cordless

Cordless drills are well-known for their versatility, as they are often easier to use and lighter than corded drills.

When selecting a cordless drill, keep the following factors in mind:

Power: You’ll want to keep an eye out for two metrics here: voltage and torque. The basic rule is that a greater voltage indicates a more powerful drill. The majority of cordless drills on the market today are 18V, while lower (7.2V) and higher (20V) alternatives are available.

Torque is measured in newton-metres and represents the twisting power (Nm). Some drills allow you to vary the torque settings so that you can use more torque for stronger materials and less torque for sensitive materials.

Speed will be measured in revolutions per minute (rpm). Many drills have two speeds (300rpm for drilling and 800rpm for screw driving), but choosing a drill with variable speed settings (including speeds up to 1,000rpm) will give you greater control.

Batteries: One of the most popular forms of batteries today is lithium-ion, which charges faster, lasts longer, and is lighter than other types such as NiCd (Nickel-Cadmium). Lithium-ion batteries also offer continuous drain until the power is totally depleted.

Keep two things in mind: the battery charger and the battery’s Amp hour (Ah). Some chargers can recharge a battery in as little as 15 minutes. Others will take three hours, a significant variance that can have a significant impact on your productivity. Another important parameter that provides you an indication of a battery’s storage capacity. A greater Ah value, once again, generally signifies a longer battery life.

Corded

Corded drills are suited for heavy-duty applications. When it comes to finding one, there are several variables to consider. Some are similar to cordless drills (torque and speed), but you must also consider:

Power is measured in watts for a corded drill. Higher wattage, like higher voltage, indicates a more powerful drill.

SDS (Special Direct System) drills concrete are designed to hammer with greater force. This allows you to complete more difficult tasks faster, and you can even add chisel bits to turn your SDS drill into a mini-jackhammer (breaking through concrete, removing tiles, and other light demolition projects). They are the best drill for concrete.

Whatever drill you choose – whether a cordless drill driver or a corded hammer drill – what matters is that you select the drill that is most suited to your needs and is ready to assist you in getting the job done.

How to Plan the Lighting and Electrical Points for your Home

One of the many things you have to plan for when it comes to your home renovation is where to locate your lighting and electrical points. It’s not easy right off the bat, but we’ll guide you along and present some questions for you to think about as you do up your lighting and electrical plan along with your interior designer or contractor.

Plan waaay in advance

Plan early. It doesn’t have to be set in stone from the start, but you do want a proper idea of where the power points and switches go. A good interior designer or a contractor will do this with you in the early stages of your renovation.

Having a plan early will give allowances for switches and other power points when planning for built-ins. Knowing where everything goes allows the professionals to do the necessary carpentry work for any concealment if necessary. Get started on the lighting and electrical points once your interior design is more or less finalised and preferably before any work commences.

Design: Rezt n Relax Interior

For homeowners considering a smart home system, make sure you accommodate for that early on. If you are going for the basics e.g. smart light bulbs, you may not need to plan for that at this stage. However, if you are going for the full kit (video doorbell, digital lock, motion sensors, light switches, etc.), you will need to do some wiring work, which is better done at the renovation stage than after.

» You can read our review of the Schneider Electric’s Wiser Smart Home System here, and see the importance of planning early!

Do several walkthroughs

When planning the lighting and electrical points for your home, you will want to do several walkthroughs in your new place. If you can, get everyone in the household involved because each one of us has different needs.

Go room by room and think about how you’ll spend time in each space. Think about the positioning of your furniture and built-ins and have an idea of where they should go. Think about where the electronics and appliances will be located.

Once you have a rough gauge, mark them out on your floor plan. In the subsequent walkthrough with your interior designer or electrician, pay heed to their professional opinions, in the aspects of safety, practicality and outlook and then adjust accordingly.

Understand the three types of lighting (ambient, task, accent) for each space

Consider a layered lighting approach when planning out the lighting points. Not every space will need all three types of lighting, but it’s good to have a variation as it adds to the depth and function of the space.

Example of a layered lighting plan.

Image source: Eat and Travel Later With Us

Ambient lights refer to a general type of lighting that will be able to light up the entire area evenly. Task lights are more focused and are targeted at areas where you need to handle tasks. Accent lights are for ambience, to uplift the mood, highlight certain features or boost the aesthetics of a room.

Design: Charlotte’s Carpentry

Here’s an example of how you can do up your lighting plan for the different areas of the home:

Kitchen / Dining

Ambient: Recessed lighting or flush mount lighting

Task: Concealed LED strip lights under cabinets (to light the prep counters and cooking zone), lights inside drawers and cabinets, pendant lights over the island and dining table

Accent: Toe-kick lights, wall sconces

Pro tip: When planning where your recessed lights should go, make sure the light source isn’t blocked when you open up a top cabinet door.

Living Room

Ambient: Recessed lights, flush mount or a large pendant light if you have enough height

Task: Adjustable floor lights or swinging wall lights for reading

Accent: Spotlights casting light at pictures, table lamps or track lights to highlight certain features

Design: UNO Interior

Bedroom

Ambient: Flush mount or pendant lighting near the centre of the room, track lights for the closet area

Task: Table lamps or wall-mounted lights by the bed, LED strips lights inside the wardrobe, vanity mirror with built-in lights

Accent: Concealed lighting under the base of your closet, table lamps with dimmer function

Design: Fifth Avenue Interior

Bathroom

Ambient: Recessed lights

Task: Wall sconces or pendants by the side of the mirror to prevent casting shadows over your face

Accent: LED strips along the mirror or under the vanity cabinet

Design: Azrul Yusoff Interior Studio

Home Office

Ambient: Flush mount ceiling lights and take into account natural lighting!

Task: Desk lamps that are adjustable or floor lamps

Accent: Monopoint lights for highlighting certain parts of the room

How many power outlets and switches and where to locate them?

The number of outlets you need in each room will depend on the number of electronics and appliances you have and how many are used at a time. Also consider any plugged-in lighting you may have and make sure you account for the existing outlets you are planning to keep.

You don’t need one outlet for every single electronic or appliance, only for those that are permanently plugged in. For everything else, think about the frequency of use and the number of electronics or appliances you are using at any one time.

How do you usually spend time in each room? Take into consideration your lifestyle habits before allocating the positioning of switches and outlets. And if they tend to stick out against your sleek interiors, you will also want to think about how to conceal them.

Here are some tips when planning out switches and electrical outlets:

Kitchen / Dining

Design: Starry Homestead

Appliances that are usually fixed in place: Hob, hood, ovens, refrigerator.Countertop appliances: How many will be left out on the counters—those will require fixed outlets. These appliances are commonly left on counters: Kettle, steamer, air fryer, blender, rice cooker, toaster, coffee machine, pressure cooker, etc.For appliances don’t have a permanent place on the counter, where are they usually used? You’ll want to locate a couple of outlets there to make sure cords aren’t running across the stove or across the floor.Do you have a baking station? Include outlets for appliances like your stand mixer. Most portable appliances don’t have very long cords, so you’ll want to make sure the outlets for them aren’t located too high. Will you be using any appliances/electronics at the dining area e.g. hot pot, fan, etc? If so, you’ll want to include an outlet near the dining table. Will you be working at your dining table? If so, include extra outlets for charging laptops and phones.Group several outlets together to minimise visual clutter.Where to hide outlets? Underneath top cabinets, within cabinets, the side of counters and cabinets, recessed outlets and blending in with the walls or backsplash.

Design: Next Door ID

Living Room

Design: Arche Interior

Electronics that will likely need a fixed outlet: TV, sound bar, fans, speakers, air purifier, dehumidifier, table and floor lamps, vacuum cleaners. For those with large open spaces, think about going with a two-way switch so you can control the lights from more than a single location. This is useful to minimise foot traffic.Do you need an outlet for charging devices by the sofa?If your TV’s wall-mounted, consider an outlet that is located near to the middle of the wall. If your TV’s positioned atop a console stand, an outlet nearer to the floor will make more sense.A built-in console is a great spot for hiding outlets for media units. Make sure you let your designer know in advance so that he or she can accommodate room for them.Where will you be placing your floor or table lamps? This should be planned out early if you don’t want to see too many cords running across the room. Outlets for floor lamps should be located closer to the floor, while outlets for table lamps should be around side table height. Will the switches of your wall lights be located in the same area as your other light switches? If not, consider how to place your wall light switches at a more discreet location.

Design: Key Concept

Bedroom / Bathroom

Design: Earth Interior Design

Electronics that will need outlets: Phone charger, TV, bedside lamps, hair dryer, curling iron, straightener, electronic shaver, electronic toothbrush, fan, air purifier, dehumidifier, garment steamer, etc.Go with a bedside switch that can control the main lights of your bedroom, so you won’t need to get up from the bed to turn off the lights.Plan for enough outlets by the bed for charging your devices. Bonus: include a USB outlet for charging phones.Make sure you know the dimensions of your bed and bedside table when locating your outlets. You don’t want to be caught in a situation where you’ll have to shift your nightstand just to charge your phone. If you have a dressing table in the bedroom, have outlets for plugging in appliances that you are likely to use there like your hairdryer, straightener, etc.Consider a dimmer switch for the bedroom so you can adjust the lighting in this space. Warm lights are great for unwinding but if you want to read before bed, a cooler light will be more suitable. Will there be a TV in the bedroom? If so, make sure you account for that.

Design: Rezt n Relax Interior

The Ultimate Guide for Choosing the Perfect Bed Frame for your Slumber Haven

Design: Diva’s Interior Design

The bed frame is a major and hence the most important piece of furniture in the bedroom. Therefore, it is typically the starting point for bedroom decoration. Furthermore, having a good night’s rest starts with a good bed frame since it provides support for the bed mattresses. In some cases, it doubles up as storage too.  Unfortunately, most homeowners are not aware that there are as many as 9 different types of bed frames to choose from! So, read on to find out which type of bed frame is the right fit for your lifestyle and personality!

#1. Four poster bed for a dramatic room makeover

Design: Free Space Intent

The 4 poster bed, sometimes known as the canopy bed frame, has been slowly gaining popularity in recent years. Characterised by 4 posts at each corner of the bed frame, its ability to allow fabrics to be draped over the bed frame, makes the room feel more inviting and cozy. Hence, they work best in bedrooms with large vertical spaces and high ceilings. They are also recommended for bedrooms that are bathed in a lot of natural light. In addition, mosquito nets can be used instead of draped fabric to keep out the bugs.

Design: The Roomakers

Do you know?
Canopy bed frames make use of fabric drapes to create a dramatic impact. As a result, the effort of maintaining the 4 poster bed is higher since dust tends to be trapped on top of the fabric canopy. In addition, the canopy bed tends to be heavier than other bed frame due to its size and construction.

#2. Sleigh bed for a classic style

Design: D’ Initial Concept

The sleigh bed features a high scrolled headboard and lower footboard. As the name suggests, the bed design resembles a sled drawn by reindeers. In order to give a modern touch and update this classic look, some sleigh bed frame designs no longer feature the curved head or the footboard. Sleigh beds come in a variety of styles, ranging from upholstered to solid wood designs and hence, they are suitable for bedrooms that feature classic and grand interior decorative elements like ceilings with elaborate ornate moulding.

Design: LemonFridge Studio

Do you know?
A sleigh bed is not suitable for a compact sized bedroom since its scrolled headboard and/or footboard takes up unnecessary space.

#3. Platform bed for less visual clutter

Design: HYLA Architects

Platform beds are typically characterised by a lack of head and footboard, and the mattress sits on a low-lying profile, horizontal platform frame. Due to its simple and minimal design, it is commonly featured in Japanese “Zen” inspired or minimalist home interior designs.

Design:  Charlotte’s Carpentry

Do you know?

The platform bed frame design is most suitable for space challenged bedrooms since its minimalist, sleek design takes up less space and the simple profile creates less visual clutter.

#4. Storage bed to boost the bedroom space

Design:  Free Space Intent

Storage beds are designed to conceal storage beneath the mattress. Most storage beds come with a hinged frame and are fitted with a hydraulic mechanism so that the entire mattress can be easily lifted to reveal the storage compartments. Storage beds are gaining popularity since they help to keep the bedroom neat and tidy. Furthermore, more homeowners decided to customise the storage bed frames to blend them with the overall interior design.

Design: Free Space Intent

Do you know?
There are also storage beds that come with additional headboard storage, where storage is within easy reach, without having to lift the entire mattress.

#5. Murphy bed to free up space in a unique way

Design: D’ Initial Concept

Murphy beds are also known as wall, pull-down beds, or fold-up beds. It is specially designed to be hinged at one end so that it can be stored vertically against a wall and hidden in a closet or cabinet. The main advantage of using a Murphy bed is that it can be tucked away and free up space when it is not used.

Design: D’ Initial Concept

Do you know?
Murphy beds are usually designed to be multi-functional. Hence, they are configured to pull dual or triple duty as storage shelves, or even converted into a sofa, after it has been folded up against the wall.

#6. Adjustable bed to cater to varying sleeping positions

Image: Tempur

For many years, adjustable beds have been synonymous with hospital beds and perceived as beds meant for the medically unfit. However, if you like reading or using devices or watching TV in bed, you can consider purchasing an adjustable bed, where it can convert into various levels of sitting positions.

Image: Tempur.com

Do you know?
Adjustable beds provide certain health benefits, such as relieving chronic pain, as they are able to take the pressure off aching joints. In addition, adjustable beds can improve blood circulation once the upper back or lower body is lifted.

#7. Bunk bed for privacy between siblings

Design: The Orange Cube

Using a bunk bed is the most effective way to maximise the vertical space since it is made up of one-bed frame stacked on top of another. Bunk beds are popular alternatives to trundle beds,  where the bed frame hides one mattress underneath the other, which can be pulled out in a drawer style. To address the space constraints, some bunk beds are designed as an L-shaped bunk bed, sometimes known as a corner bunk.

Design: Mr Shopper Studio

Do you know?
The bunk bed is suitable for siblings sharing a room, since it is able to maintain the privacy and individuality of the occupants.

#8. Loft bed to get the most out of a compact bedroom

Design: Charlton Design

A loft bed is a bed frame that is specially designed to be raised on supports that are built high enough, to free up the floor area beneath the bed for other purposes. The space can be used as a play area, a study nook, or a chill-out corner with a mini double seater sofa. The freed-up space can also be used to set aside ample space for a closet or bookshelf.

Design: Rezt & Relax Interior

Do you know?
A corner loft bed is made up of two loft beds, arranged in an L-shape. It is suitable for children who are sharing a room, since the entire space can be fully utilised. Thus, the loft beds are suitable for bedrooms with high ceiling.

#9. Day bed for a space-conscious bedroom

Image from: Island living

Daybeds have dual functions, as they can double up as a sofa for lounging and reclining in the bedrooms. In fact, they are a “crossbred” between a Chaise Longue and a bed. Day beds are great options for small spaces like studio apartments, where there is a need for the bed to multifunction as the sofa during the day.

Image from: Island living

Do you know?
Daybeds are typically marketed as a more stylish alternative since they usually spot a grand design and upholstered in a luxurious fabric, which is associated with lounging.

4 bedframe tips for that perfect sleep

Design: Hock Hoon

a. Scale and balance matters
A general rule of thumb for furnishing your bedroom, is to have a place for everything. Hence, it is not practical to have a huge canopy bed frame that dominates the bedroom, while leaving little for other necessities, such as wardrobe and bedside table.

Design: Diva’s Interior Design

b. Pick the right height
The height of the bed frame matters, especially for the young, elderly or people with mobility issues. If a taller mattress is desired, then a lower bed frame profile will be needed to balance out comfortably. When necessary, you can also custom order the bed frame at the desired height.

Design: Urban Habitat Design

c. Choose the material and built wisely

In general, solid hardwood or metal is the preferred material for a sturdy bed frame. Check the hardware and joinery system that is used to hold and keep the bed frame construction together. Keep a lookout for signs of warp and sags, since these are indications of a weak or flimsy low-quality bed frame. In addition, a well-built bed frame should not creak and make noises when it is used.

Design: 19EightyThree

d. Protect the floor from the bed frame legs

Always protect the bedroom floor from the legs of the bed frame with glides or covers. Otherwise, the bed frame legs could snag your carpet or scratch the hardwood floor. The protective covers also prevent the bed frame from moving about.

You Need To Know These Tankless Hot Water Heater Pros And Cons

tankless-water-heater-pros-and-cons-sebring-design-build

Featured Image: Fresh Water Systems

Tankless water heaters are becoming popular across the globe thanks to their advantages. No system is perfect though, and when it comes time for you to upgrade to a new water heater, you need to weigh up the pros and cons.

We’ve spoken to some hot water experts and collected the pros and cons of tankless water heaters that you need to know before you commit.

Pro: Only Pay for the Hot Water You Use

One of the biggest tankless water heater advantages is that their running costs are cheaper. This is because you only pay for the water you heat.

Traditional water heaters heat up a whole tank of water and keep it warm, regardless of how much hot water you actually use. This is why it’s so important to get the right-sized tank so you’re not heating more water than you need.

Tankless water heaters, however, only heat water when you turn the hot water tap on. You could save between 8 and 34 per cent of your water heating energy with a tankless water heater depending on your hot water usage.

With water heating accounting for 18% of your home’s energy use, your energy bill could be 6.12% cheaper with an instant hot water system.

Con: More Costly Upfront

Compared to traditional storage tank hot water systems, tankless units are more costly to purchase upfront. A tankless water heater tends to be almost twice as expensive to purchase as conventional water heaters. That’s not including installation!

Choate’s HVAC

Pro: Never Run Out Of Hot Water Again

Are you tired of having to wait for your storage tank to reheat the whole tank after everyone in the house has had a shower except you? You won’t have that problem with a tankless water heater.

Tankless water heaters heat water as it is passed through the unit. So long as the hot water tap is turned on, water will continue to be heated by your tankless water heater. It’s essentially an endless supply of hot water!

Con: Tankless Water Heaters Are Limited By Their Flow Rate

While you don’t have a finite amount of hot water with tankless systems as you do with storage types, you are limited by a maximum flow rate. This can range from four to eight gallons per minute (GPM).

If you use your shower, washing machine and dishwasher all at once, you might exceed your unit’s flow rate. Instead of your shower suddenly running cold, the hot water will be spread out between all the appliances and fixtures. This results in only lukewarm water, with an inconsistent temperature.

The solution to this problem is to spread out your hot water use, rather than using all your hot water appliances at once. Alternatively, you could have more than one water heater if water demand is so high.

Pro: More Energy-Efficient And Environmentally Friendly

Because you’re only heating the water that you use, a tankless water heater is more energy-efficient than a traditional water heater. It takes a lot of energy to keep a tank full of water hot!

Alongside energy efficiency, you’ll usually find increased environmental friendliness. Water heating is the largest contributor to residential greenhouse gas emissions. An electric storage tank hot water system releases 16 to 27 per cent more greenhouse gases than a tankless type in a three-person house. Gas instant hot water systems are even better.

Upgrading to a tankless system will not only help save you money, but you’ll be doing the environment a favour too.

Con: Hot Water Isn’t Instant

Despite the name, instant hot water system, you don’t actually get hot water instantly. Because you don’t have any stored hot water, it takes some time for your water heater to heat your water from cold to the set temperature.

The cold water you feel is what was left in the pipes from the last time you turned the hot water on. It doesn’t take long for your water to become hot, thankfully. This does mean you’ll waste a small amount of water waiting for it to heat up, however.

Off Grid Permaculture

Pro: Less Risk Of Leaks And No Chances Of Explosions

Storing hot water isn’t as simple as just keeping it in a sealed tank. A storage tank can leak water as it corrodes and a faulty pressure relief valve puts you at risk of it exploding.

These risks are eliminated from tankless water heaters, as they don’t have the challenge of storing water.

Con: Inconsistent Temperatures

You’ll often experience inconsistent temperatures if your tankless water heater’s flow rate is too small. For reference, here are some common flow rates of plumbing fixtures and appliances:

faucets – 0.5-1.5 GPMbathtub faucet – 4-7 GPMshower head – 1.5-2.5 GPMdishwasher – 1-1.5 GPMwashing machine – 1.5-3 GPM

Given that you’ll find tankless systems with flow rates between four and eight GPM, you need to consider how much hot water your home uses at once.

Pro: Saves Space

One of the pros of tankless water heaters is their compact size. Unlike traditional water heaters which have a bulky storage tank, tankless water heaters are only a small, wall-mounted unit. This makes them a great option for homes with only a small amount of land or apartments.

Not only that, but you no longer need to look at an ugly storage tank!

Con: Tankless Water Heater Installation Is More Specialised

All the benefits of tankless water heaters are thanks to their advanced design and features. This all comes with a more specialised installation, however.

If you’re installing a tankless water heater where a storage tank once was for the first time, you’ll likely need new wiring, piping or gas lines. Some manufacturers also require that a water softener is installed to prevent mineral buildup in the system. Your warranty could be voided if this isn’t installed.

Storage tank systems have been around for much longer too, so more plumbers are familiar with these systems too. This means it’s even more important to ensure the plumber who is installing your tankless water heater is fully licensed and has plenty of industry experience.

KTAR News

Pro: Longer Lifespan

While there are measures in place to prolong the lifespan of a storage tank, storing water in a metal tank only works for so long. Eventually, the tank will corrode and you won’t be able to use it to heat water anymore. More often than not, this is the reason why your hot water system needs to be replaced.

The benefit of not having to store water in the first place means this isn’t a problem for tankless water heaters. A tankless water heater will have a longer lifespan than a storage hot water heater.

Con: Requires More Maintenance

All kinds of water heaters require regular servicing to work efficiently and prevent costly hot water system repairs. Because of how tankless hot water heaters work, they tend to require more maintenance than a traditional water heater.

The system should be flushed annually to remove any mineral buildups which can cause blockages and stop internal parts from working. The filters, fans and other components also need to be checked to ensure they are working as they should.

This is no DIY job and so one of the cons of tankless water heaters is that you’ll need to hire a licensed plumber for this. If you don’t follow the service requirements as specified by the manufacturer, your warranty might be voided too.

Pro: Longer Warranties

Remember how we said tankless water heaters tend to last longer? This often means manufacturers provide longer warranties on these systems too.

Provided you follow the manufacturer’s instructions, some warranties last up to 20 years! So if anything goes wrong, you won’t be the one to foot the bill.

Con: No Power, No Hot Water

A major con of tankless water heaters is that if the power goes out, you’ve got no hot water. Even gas-powered tankless water heaters require electricity to operate a control panel.

This is one area where conventional water heaters have a major advantage over tankless systems. In the event of a power outage, a gas water heater will continue to heat water and an electric system will at least store whatever hot water is left in the tank.

tankless-water-heater-pros-and-cons-sebring-design-build

Out Of This World Plumbing

Pro: Clean Hot Water

A big challenge for storage water heaters is the cleanliness and safety of the stored water. If the tank corrodes, your water will end up rusty and have a brown-red colour. This is due to the iron content in the water.

Thankfully, rusty water isn’t harmful to you but isn’t pleasant to look at. It’s best not to consume this water though, in case the cause is not a corroding water heater but something else.

The major concern with stored water is the risk of bacterial growth. Storage tanks should be set to 140°F (60°C) to stop this. Else, you run the risk of bacteria such as Legionella pneumophila growing in the tank. This can cause Legionnaires’ Disease and other health problems.

Because a tankless water heater doesn’t store any water, this risk of rust or bacteria is eliminated. You can rest knowing your hot water is clean from a tankless water heater.

Con: Difficult to Get Lukewarm Water

For a tankless hot water heater to turn on, a set minimum volume of water needs to flow from a faucet. This means there’s a bit of a jump between cold and the coolest warm water where the system turns on. Those of us with extremely low-flow faucets and shower heads can struggle to trigger the water heater to turn on too.

So if you’re someone who enjoys a barely warm shower, you might find it difficult to get this with a tankless water heater. For the vast majority of us who enjoy a searing hot shower, this isn’t a problem.

Pro: Gas, Electric and Solar Models Available

Instant water heaters can be powered by gas, electricity and even solar, so no matter where you are in the world, there’s an option for you. Gas models tend to be the most efficient of the three power sources, but not everyone has access to natural gas.

Solar models harness the power of the sun to heat your water, so you can recoup the additional installation costs more quickly too. When the sun’s not out and there’s not enough energy to heat your water, these systems can have gas or electric boosters to take over the heating power. This means you’re never left without hot water.

The Verdict – Are Tankless Water Heaters Worth It?

Tankless water heaters have a range of benefits that make them attractive options for the modern homeowner. They aren’t without their faults, though, and it’s up to you to weigh up all the pros and cons to make the right decision.

Installing a tankless water heater means you get great energy savings, unlimited clean hot water, a longer-lasting unit and so much more. This is at the price of a higher upfront cost, more specialised installation and no hot water during power outages, to name a few cons.

Most homes will get more benefits from a tankless water heater than disadvantages. There are limited circumstances where you might experience more cons than pros with this system, including:

large homes with big hot water demandspeople who like cool/lukewarm showersextremely low flow fixtures are installed that stop the system from turning onupfront installation costs are too much

If you don’t fall into any of these categories, then your home can experience some major benefits by upgrading to a tankless water heater.

Are you looking for a cut off saw?

A cut-off saw, sometimes known as an abrasive, is a circular saw used to cut metal and masonry. An abrasive disc, comparable to a thin grinding wheel, performs the cutting action. This isn’t technically a saw because it doesn’t cut with consistently formed edges (teeth).

You are in luck because today, we are going to review the best 9-inch cordless cut off saws in the market.

Sebring Tip:

The Milwaukee 9-Inch Cut Off Saw is a new tool in the Milwaukee portfolio, and the designers paid attention to the market and designed a competitive cut-off saw. The friction glide adjustable guard, which the user can modify to any position without using any pre-set detents, was one of our favorites. This feature gives the saw a lot of leeway in terms of how it fits with workpieces and the user’s stance.

The Milwaukee concrete saw is the only one with the One-Key mechanism. This feature allows users to trace the position of their tool, lockout/disable the saw from unauthorized users and manage tool inventory through the One-Key app.

Pros:

Cutting is safer than using a grinderDesign with ergonomics in mindA 9-inch diamond blade is includedFor increased safety, a wheeled skid plate is included

Cons:

There are no notable drawbacks

Sebring Tip:

Cutting masonry, metal, and other materials with a mains-powered disc cutter is perfect. Unlike a grinder, this tool was created with the sole purpose of cutting. Benefits include a huge cut capacity for the blade size, as well as an ergonomic design that improves user posture while increasing safety and accuracy. The higher angle on the strengthened skid plate lifts the blade off the floor, allowing the machine to be placed down straight after the cut. Built-in wheels improve precision and reduce user fatigue when performing lengthy, straight cuts at ground level. All varieties of masonry, including reinforced concrete, are easily handled by the powerful electric motor. The balanced center of gravity is provided by the central location.

Why Invest On 9 Inch Cordless Cut-Off Saws

Stihl was the first business to release 9-inch cordless Stihl chop saws in 2015. The second was Husqvarna. Both of these saws ran on 36 volts and had a reputation for long run times, although they lacked power.

DEWALT then released the 60V FlexVolt in 2018, which we tested last winter and have been using on our job sites. Milwaukee was the last to market in the fall of 2019.

Why would you need a 9-inch cut-off saw, you might wonder?

It’s a reasonable question. These saws are more of an expansion tool for people who are already on the platform than entry-level instruments. We call them “80 percent tools” since they can perform 80% of the duties that a gas tool can.

Cordless cut-off saws have a wide range of uses and “niche wins.” Mechanical contractors use it for fast, ultra-straight cuts in 8” PVC tubing, masonry and foundation contractors use it for basement drainage, and “first-pass” door entrance cuts are just a few examples.  Once space is occupied, don’t forget about call back cuts or punch list applications.

Here are the advantages of 9 inch cordless cut-off saw:

Fast Ramp Up Noise and vibration are reducedOverhead is easier to useLighter

Different Types Of Cut Off Saw

A cut off saw is a simple yet effective cutting instrument that is commonly used in metal cutting. A cutoff saw is a word that relates to two different types of power tools. First, there’s the miter saw, which is commonly employed in the woodworking industry. The abrasive saw, on the other hand, is used to cut hard materials like metals and ceramics. Miter saws are used to make precise angled and bevel cuts. Let’s have a look at the many varieties of cut-off saws.

Manual Miter Saw

A manual miter saw is a metal guide that works in conjunction with a miter box to make precise miter cuts. These cut off saws are still infrequently used in picture framing and manual woodworking, but power woodworking tools have mostly superseded them.

These cut off saws are still infrequently used in picture framing and manual woodworking, but power woodworking tools have mostly superseded them.

Power Miter Saw

A power miter saw is a gadget that allows you to make quick, precise cuts at the specified angle. It is extensively utilized in framing and mold cutting activities. The majority of miter saws are light and portable, with blade widths ranging from eight to twelve inches.

brasive Saw

An abrasive saw is a power tool that is used to cut hard materials. The cutting motion is performed by an abrasive disc that looks like a thin grinding wheel. For cutting, the abrasive saw does not employ standard-shaped edges. The cutting wheel & motor are mounted on a free arm fixed to a permanent base plate, and it features an integrated vise or clamp.

Since its introduction, the electric cut off tool has aided in the seamless operation of construction sites. Because of their portability, these instruments are also ideal for lightweight steel construction and workshops that use constant power cold saws.

The safety of the workers is critical while utilizing a power tool such as a battery operated saw. So, here are some safety precautions that you may use to keep yourself safe while using a cut off saw.

Cut Off Saw Safety Tips

Although a set of safety goggles may appear to be sufficient, a face cover is strongly recommended to protect yourself from potentially fatal injuries.

If the dust collection system isn’t working properly, you’ll need to cover your nose with a mask.

Before mounting the cut-off wheel, inspect it for any cracks or damage.

Applying sideways force to the parting-off wheel is never a good idea. Because the parting-off wheels have very narrow cross-sections, this can result in wheel fracture.

During the cutting operation, there are visible sparks. To avoid a fire hazard, keep flammable objects away from chop saws.

Cutting wood, plywood, plastic, and other materials with a cut off the wheel can cause the wheel to load up, resulting in wheel breaking.

These are the several varieties of cut off saws from which you can choose the one that best suits your needs. When using this tool, you should also be concerned about safety, so follow the safety precautions listed above and stay safe when using these power tools.

Pros And Cons Of Using Cut Off Saw

Pros: A cut off saw is a powerful tool that will devour almost anything you put in front of it. A metal cutting cut off saw is by far the greatest option for reliably cutting big chunks of metal.

Another significant advantage is the speed with which metals and other materials may be sliced. Cut off saws prioritize speed and power over precision. Thus, many feature footswitches that allow you to feed metal quickly with both hands.

Furthermore, because the abrasive wheels on cut-off saws are thinner than those on circular saw blades, there is less waste.

Cons: To begin with, cut off saws are more difficult to control, which is primarily an issue when making complicated, angled cuts. However, I believe it is still worth addressing. Furthermore, the cut off saw is unsuitable for producing precise cuts. Finally, keep in mind that using a cut off saw is a little more difficult than using other types of saws.

Cut Off Saw FAQs

What is the purpose of a cut-off saw?

Abrasive saws, also known as cut-off saws or chop saws, are circular saws (a type of power tool) used to cut hard materials, including metals, tile, and concrete. An abrasive disc, comparable to a thin grinding wheel, performs the cutting action. This isn’t technically a saw because it doesn’t cut with consistently formed edges (teeth).

These cut off saws come in different forms, including tabletop, freehand, and walk behind. The cutting wheel and motor are installed on a pivoting arm coupled to a fixed base plate in tabletop variants, which are widely used to cut tile and metal. Tabletop saws are frequently powered by electricity and feature a built-in vise or other clamping mechanisms. On construction sites, freehand designs are commonly used to cut concrete, asphalt, and tubing. The handles and motor are close to the operator, and the blade is at the far end of the saw. Because the materials being cut are heavier & larger, freehand saws do not have a vise. Walk-behind models, sometimes known as flat saws, are larger saws that cut into concrete floors, asphalt, and concrete paving materials from a stand or cart.

What is the distinction between a chop saw and a cut-off saw?

The blade and angle of their blades are the key differences between the two. Miter saw blades can be oriented in a variety of ways, whereas chop saw blades are always inclined at 90 degrees because it is the only cut they can make.

Is it possible to cut wood using a cut-off saw?

A protractor fence and a straight fence are common on chop saws. Although abrasive cut-off saws are typically used to cut metal or PVC, with a few simple tweaks, they may be designed to cut wood as well.

Conclusion:

Our clear winner is none other than Dewalt. The Dewalt FLEXVOLT 60V Cordless 9″ Cut-Off Saw boasts a 3.25″ cut depth and a brushless motor w/ a no-load speed of 6,500 RPM. This allows for no messing around with gas, instant-on, and rapid cutting and scoring of concrete and masonry materials. It cuts through steel and rebar with the same efficiency as gas saws. The guard is positioned out of the way to allow for a clear line of sight and good vision in congested areas. There are no belts to change, tension, or maintenance on the Dewalt DCS690 because it has a beltless all-metal drivetrain. The battery and terminals are also protected from water, dust, and other materials by the latched and sealed battery box. A duel-feed water system provides an OSHA Table 1 compliance option for dust management when cutting concrete and masonry materials. The Flexvolt 9″ cut-off saw, 2x DCB609 Flexvolt Batteries (9.0Ah), Dewalt Fast Charger, 9″ Diamond Concrete Blade, and 9″ Abrasive Blade are included in the DCS690X2 package.
