What Is A Mid Century Modern Kitchen?

A sense of comfortable minimalism defines the typical mid-century modern kitchen; surfaces are practical and easy to maintain, while colours and geometric patterns add visual interest. Floor plans are as open as possible, and in-kitchen dining options are often part of the overall design.

Take one step into a mid century modern kitchen, and you’ll notice a few things immediately: The look is uncluttered, with charming retro touches that lend tons of personality. Light splashes of bold colour add just the right amount of intrigue.

Modern stainless steel appliances are right at home, although some homeowners prefer to add a playful vibe with a colourful stove or refrigerator. As coloured appliances are on trend right now, they’re easier than ever to find.

The History Of Mid Century Modern Kitchens

While the term “mid century modern” was coined in 1984 by writer and art historian Cara Greenberg, the movement itself took place between the 1940s and the 1960s. Though designs continue to evolve, it’s possible to see the influence of top designers including Le Corbusier and Bauhaus reflected in everything from mid century modern kitchen tables to elegant lighting solutions.

Kitchens built during the mid century movement tended to offer far greater convenience than their predecessors. Refrigerators were getting larger, and cooktops and ovens were easier to operate than older models. By the end of the second world war, kitchens had taken on vibrant colours that inspire the mid century modern spaces we enjoy today.

The 1950s witnessed an end to boring, bland kitchen designs; modern pinks, yellows, blues, and greens were favoured for everything from cabinets to appliances. The kitchen’s position in the home moved from the back of the house to the front, and open floor plans allowed the entire family to mingle.

As the heart of the home, the 1950s kitchen was brimming with appliances to make living fun and convenient. Hand-held mixers and stand mixers allowed mums to whip up delightful desserts; milkshake makers made it easy to add more options to the after-dinner menu. Fascinating reproductions of vintage appliances are available these days – perfect for spicing up a mid century modern kitchen.

When more women joined the workforce in the 1960s, the mid-century kitchen hit its heyday. Simpler, sleeker designs were easier to clean, and time-savers such as garbage disposals and dishwashers were gaining popularity. Although the bold hues of the 1950s are enjoying a resurgence today, the 60s saw many of these colours replaced with harvest gold and simple cream.

By the end of the 1960s, kitchen designs had mainly gone from streamlined to gaudy – and by the 1980s, homeowners were once again ready to enjoy the convenience and visual appeal of an efficient modern kitchen. Today, the mid-century modern kitchen is among the most coveted designs.

What Are The Design Details?

To understand the design elements that go into a typical mid century kitchen, it’s important to have a feel for the movement itself. Designer George Nelson famously separatedmid century modern design into three main categories: The machine, the handcrafted, and the bio-morphic.

Machine designs have a space-age look, straight out of The Jetsons. Whimsical geometric forms can make function a near afterthought in this design category; think of playful vintage clocks and ornate metal chandeliers with satellite-inspired details. Both are great examples of the design details that go into many mid century modern fixtures.

Handcrafted designs are minimalistic, useful, and sculpted to display a combination of contrasting curved and linear shapes. TheFinn Juhl 45 Chair is a classic example.

Bio-morphic designs feature curved, organic shapes with smooth surfaces. Think of a classic kidney- or boomerang-shaped table, and you’ve got the idea. Many classic-lookingEames mid century modern kitchen chairs fall into this category thanks to their smooth, curved lines.

The Kitchen Renovators at Houseace explain “Most mid century modern kitchens incorporate bits and pieces of each design category. The look is as uncluttered as it is charismatic, and with an open floor plan, the kitchen flows with the rest of the home.”

Mid Century Modern Design Ideas For Your Kitchen

There are so many mid-century modern ideas to explore when considering how best to proceed and make this trend your own. Updated countertops, cabinets, and lighting are anything but basic and with so many exciting design details to choose from, the process of creating an artfully inspired space is a fun way to unleash your inner designer.

Flexibility is one of the most appealing aspects of mid century modern design. There are no hard and fast rules; instead, it’s best to choose elements that appeal to you. An experienced kitchen renovations designer can work alongside you, creating a space that works for your lifestyle while providing the aesthetic experience you crave.

Play With Colour

There are many different ways to use colour. Bold colours are easily incorporated via bright, geometric shaped tile along the backsplash, or by the addition of a single colourful appliance. A vibrant accent wall is another alternative, as are brightly coloured cabinets.

You might want to go for multiple bold tones like those found inNancy’s back to the future pool house if you’d like to create an exciting space that really wakes up the senses. If bright teals, reds, or golds aren’t for you, you’ll be glad to discover that even a little bit of colour goes a long way toward creating a pleasing focal point in your kitchen.

Pastels including soft blue, mint green, and butter yellow are equally at home in a mid century modern kitchen design. Don’t be afraid to mix and match. At the same time, it’s perfectly fine to enjoy an understated look.

dd a Pleasing Pattern

Graphic patterns are an essential component of many a mid century modern kitchen design. Classic diamonds, starbursts, and boomerangs are easily incorporated via an accent wall finished with a retro wallpaper. If an entire patterned wall isn’t quite your cup of tea, you can add a touch of mid century fun via table linens or dish towels. As with bright colours, a little bit of patterned detail is plenty, particularly if your kitchen is on the smaller side.

Think About Laminate, But Don’t Discount Natural Stone

Many a mid century modern kitchen table features a laminate top, and a mid century modern kitchen island topped with sparkly laminate might be exactly the update your space needs. Of course, granite, quartz, and marble are excellent choices for countertops in a mid century kitchen as well, working beautifully alongside wood cabinetry in a complementary or contrasting shade.

Try Clean Whites

White cabinets have been getting the short end of the stick lately but if you’re among those who love the look of an all-white kitchen and you appreciate the mid-century modern aesthetic, then this trend is one you’ll want to embrace. Sleek, simple lines are the key here, along with mid-century style details. With textured tile, unique lighting, and decorative accents to contrast with the all-white motif, a clean white kitchen takes on a cosy, personalised feel.

If you go for a white working kitchen with mid century modern details, consider treating the space to a dark-coloured floor, which will really accentuate the bright, sparkly nature of the cabinetry.

In case all-white isn’t for you, consider allowing white to play a role. White quartz countertops are wonderful workspaces that contrast perfectly with wood or colour. White seating and at least one white wall can help create an open feel even when other hues take on starring roles.

Consider Natural Wood

Beautiful woodgrain shows up throughout mid century modern design and the kitchen is the perfect place to make the most of this natural material. Mid century modern kitchen cabinets in wood can be purely contemporary, or they can offer the perfect mingling of Scandinavian, farmhouse, or beach-inspired fusion.

Pine wood tends to offer a very light, casual presence, while oak is typically a bit darker and can appear more formal. Pair dark wood with colour though, and you’ll create a more tropical vibe.

Wood floors and wood-look laminate flooring are a natural match for a mid century modern kitchen, thanks to their ability to add pleasing warmth.

Whatever its colour and wherever it ‘s used, natural wood pairs beautifully with creamy whites, pale greys, and vibrant hues. So long as the aesthetic is streamlined and the kitchen’s elements are cohesive, the finished space will feel naturally inviting.

dd a Touch of Metal

Add a single mid century modern kitchen cabinet in metal or use them throughout the space. Whether you opt for classic bright white with chrome pulls or go for splashy colours to bring warmth and personality into your kitchen, you’ll find that these cabinets are pleasing to the eye while offering the ultimate in easy care.

Bring In An Authentic Vintage Piece or Choose An Amazing Lighting Option

Choose at least one retro art print or vintage clock to put on display in your kitchen. In case you’re unable to find something that speaks to you, mid century modern kitchen lighting can be a fine stand-in. Halogen can lights are ideal for creating illumination throughout the kitchen, while a mid century modern pendant can add plenty of visual pop.

Select Furnishings With Style and Comfort In Mind

If yours is a dine-in kitchen, you’ll want to create a focal point with a mid century modern kitchen table that complements your overall design. Simple seating in a contrasting colour will add instant visual interest. The same wisdom applies to counter height seating; pick stools with lean, tapered legs and minimalistic seats to keep your kitchen looking trim and tidy.

Decorate Carefully

Clutter detracts from the clean, open look of the mid century modern kitchen, so display only a few carefully curated objects that complement the space without overwhelming. Mid mod accents are typically lean and spare; if you prefer something more whimsical, add a touch of personality by putting a vintage cookbook on display, showing off a set of vintage mixing bowls, or even keeping your salt and pepper in a set of vintage shakers.

Embrace Transitions

Transitional mid century modern kitchen designs are among the most popular, as they combine traditional elements with contemporary ones. The clean, minimalistic edge is maintained, but there’s less of the actual mid-century era on display and perhaps a little more modern industrialism. In a transitional setting, materials mix and mingle effortlessly.

Elements such as modern acrylic or leather seating, wood or laminate flooring, clean white countertops, and simple, functional cabinetry come together perfectly. Streamlined appliances and a mixture of recessed and pendant lighting create the light, bright ambience that makes mid century modern kitchens such cheerful places to be.

Why Are mid Century Modern Kitchens So Popular?

People enjoy mid century modern kitchens for their clean aesthetics and pleasing lines, as well as for the unique design details that make them so very personal. It’s possible to work this design into any space new or old and create a look that suits the home’s surroundings. Whether this is accomplished with great lighting or a good view, the bright, open feel of a mid century modern kitchen is always appreciated.

Conclusion

With a mid century modern kitchen, the sky is the limit. This fantastic style works in kitchens of every size and with appliances of every description – even the latest smart appliances can work well in a mid century kitchen. The finished look can be warm and casual, modern and edgy, or posh and polished. Whether you fancy marble countertops and dark wood cabinets or whimsical options like coloured appliances and mica-flecked laminate, it’s possible to incorporate them into your personal design.

Interior Column Ideas For Living Room

Living room columns are an extraordinary yet basic approach to add detail and richness to your living room. The columns also help you to give a transition between the living room and dining room or kitchen, particularly in case you have an open concept kitchen.

For your living room, you can opt to utilize old style interior column ideas with appealing capitals, at the highest point of the columns. Also, classical interior column design ideas with eye-catching design subtleties can be used to make amazing details that will consistently catch the attention of the individuals in the room. Moreover, there are various ways one can utilize architectural details for the columns; settling on either basic or complicated designs

Furthermore, you can likewise utilize columns with the goal that they are the central point in the room. For example, this should be possible by arranging the furniture around the columns. Truly, giving the furniture a chance to manage how you organize your room can bring an exquisite presentation.

Homeowners can have columns made out of an assortment of materials, contingent upon their inclinations. In addition, columns can be produced using wood, stone, brick, or even concrete.

Columns work particularly well in houses with enormous open floor plans, since they give a smooth and exquisite transition. Be that as it may, you should be cautious about where you position them. For example, wooden columns fit in exceptionally well in a rustic theme.

In case your home needn’t bother with a structural column to help the entire structure, you can choose faux columns. To point out, faux columns are non-structural and utilized exclusively for decoration purposes.

Different Ways To Decorate Columns

This becomes a typical discussion among contractors and homeowners who would like to make an open floor plan by thumping down walls. The architect says an extremely significant structural column or two must remain, and all parties begin to lament a little for the ideal open space that now seems tainted. In case you wind up in this position, cheer up. Markedly, that column that originally resembled as an eyesore can turn into an element in its very own right with these interior column wraps.

First, you can use mosaic tile or wallpaper with a fascinating texture. Surely, this approach to spiff up your columns with a small investment of money and time.

Next, one of the most refreshing interior column wrap ideas is using bricks. The exposed brick walls are extremely popular in America’s coolest urban areas, and there’s a valid reason why. First, they add legitimacy to design that feels established in tradition and, along these lines, timeless. Particularly, you might be already acclimated with considering brick in the home as a fireplace surround. When in fact, it looks similarly as comfortable as cladding for thick columns like you see below.

On the other hand, if you’re not a fan of brick’s red tones, you can choose natural stones. For that rustic lodge feel, you can also pick a stacked-stone tile in a variety of tones that match your interior home column design ideas.

Moreover, wood-slatted columns proceed lightly on open-air living spaces while characterizing it as an intimate room. Besides, the space between the slats provides an impression of delicateness, with the steel frame barely noticeable underneath.

Meanwhile, who says indoor columns must be of uniform thickness? For instance, a tapered Craftsman-style column below represents the past as it supports the beam on the top.

Make Your Columns Functional

When designing a house, the vast majority of us become involved with the subtleties of making it look excellent by improving perspectives and having open spaces that give it an extravagant vibe. Then, the truth comes, particularly when we consult a professional who says that a huge room may require a load-bearing column in the middle to make it stable, or that the roof will require a couple of extra support columns in the middle to keep it stable even against extreme winds.

Having a column in the middle of an area can be unappealing as it removes the sentiment of receptiveness, but you can’t prevent it for your home’s safety. In case you are thinking about how to get around this issue, don’t stress! To demonstrate, we have interior home column design ideas that you can use to transform a dull column into a particular component that mixes into your home. Moreover, we show you interior column ideas on the best way to enhance solid columns or brick pillars to add magnificence and functionality to your home.

In case an enormous open-plan space has a concrete column in the middle, consider utilizing it as a visual divider that isolates the areas. In addition, you can paint the concrete column white and goes about as a support for the wooden pillars and beams that lay on it. In this case, the design divides the area into four smaller rooms – the living room, the foyer, the dining room, and a study. As a result, the white and dark-colored tones all throughout make a dazzling minimalist atmosphere.

Classic Columns That Won’t Go Out Of Style

Round and square columns are made up of three components. The capital or cap is wider than the pillar and can be designed in a variety of ways. Doric or Tuscan caps are ideal for understated interior design. Corinthian caps are ideal for luxury and eye-catching interior decor.

Round pillars can be plain or fluted. Stunning carvings on stone or hardwood columns can be coupled with Tuscan & Doric bases to complete gorgeous columns & enrich the modern interior design with these distinctive architectural components.

Classic columns are composed of granite and marble, precious metals, and carved wood, and they lend an ancient touch to modern interior design and decor. Modern columns and pillars can also be made of less expensive materials such as treated wood, fiberglass, and PVC. Decorative columns made of inexpensive materials are highly appealing and come in various forms appropriate for simple interior design and décor in a minimalist style, classic and elegant home interiors, and relaxing rooms in a country home.

Hardwood, stone, and marble are excellent choices for bearing big loads. Fiberglass and PVC are lightweight materials that are best used for decoration. Find pillars that are simple to install and paint, and use these architectural features to add stylish accents to your modern interior design.

Other Ways To Make Use Of Columns

First, a column can be a support for a recess. A column can fill in as support for a segment wall between two areas. For example, the concrete column with stone cladding offers a mitigating natural touch to the area. Moreover, designing a wall with a smaller width compared to the column enables you to make a recess into which you can have household furniture without causing the space to seem cramped.

On the other hand, another alternative for maximizing a loadbearing column in the social space is to utilize it as the base for the wall-mounted TV. Also, the wall can be covered with a rustic wallpaper or a design of your choice to carry a comfortable vibe to the area. Likewise, you can enrich the wall with a finish that matches the theme of your home, regardless of whether it’s modern, classic, or contemporary.

In apartments, it’s normal to discover a loadbearing column in an odd spot, like a foot away from the outside wall. In this case, an ideal approach to utilize the dead space is to fabricate storage shelves in the niche. Besides, you can use curtains to cover the niche to make it resemble a little window.

Interior Column Ideas In Big Houses

In an enormous home with a double-height roof, columns are needed to support the structure. Setting the columns in a circle to create a border for the seating space in the living room causes the area to appear cozier, particularly in big houses. In addition, it isolates the living room from the pathway prompting the stairs. Also, covering the columns with a natural stone finish and introducing floor lighting at the base of every column make a wonderful component that adds style to the living room, aside from the quietly enlightening the zone.

Meanwhile, making household furniture that fits superbly between the wall and the column can remove the attention from the placement of the support structure in the middle of an area. In this way, we can view how the top segment of the wooden partition has glass with the goal that it doesn’t compromise the natural light in the space. The bottom half can have an advantageous storage incorporated with the unit – ideal for sorting out things and keeping the living room of the house mess-free.

While structural columns are regularly present at the primary entrance to support the yard rooftop or the upper floor, you can get imaginative and break away from the conventional design of a solitary column and split it up into two. For instance, stone-clad support columns in the entrance with a hollow at the middle are ideal for setting a grower to design the space and make an all the more inviting feel.

Column Ideas Outside The House

In a home with a patio on the upper floor, while the view is the essential feature, safety is a significant aspect to be incorporated into the plan. In case the structure has a column at the edge of the patio for supporting the rooftop, the column can likewise be utilized to fix the steel and glass safety railing along the outskirt of the porch to keep the zone more secure.

On the other hand, when you have a home with an incredible view and would prefer not to obstruct it by building high boundary walls, brick columns can fill in as posts from which security fencing can be trailed around the property to secure it. Moreover, paint the columns in an appropriate shading to add a dazzling component to the outside perspective on the house. For instance, splendid red columns can improve the rustic style of the home.

Metal kitchen cabinets are not for everybody. However, if you’re searching for a smooth and modern shimmering spot to do your cooking and food preparation, then metal kitchen cabinets could be the ideal thing for you.

Way back in the 1930s and 1940s, retro metal kitchen cabinets were extremely popular. In addition, these great looking cabinets were easy to care for, low in cost, and for the most part, came in white. Although, if preferred, anyone could use spray paint in a different color.

While they looked somewhat cold and sterile, the fact that they were easy to maintain was a good trade-off. Moreover, all these vintage metal kitchen cabinets needed to look great again was scrubbing with a slightly wet washcloth or spray paint. Hence, this was a huge plus for those on a spending limit.

In the event that you have a contemporary kitchen with cutting-edge appliances, tile backsplashes, or possibly a concrete countertop, your good old wood kitchen cabinets may get a little bit out of place. Also, to keep a smooth and sleek industrial look that blends with the remainder of your style, you might need to replace your cabinets with something similarly modern and chic—metal cabinets kitchen.

Regardless of whether it is countertops, appliances, or backsplashes, stainless steel never goes out of fashion. So why not finish that sharp, metallic feel by installing some new metal kitchen cabinets?

Wood Versus Metal Kitchen Cabinets

There is nothing wrong with wood kitchen cabinets. In fact, they come in numerous shapes and styles. In addition, you can paint and stain them in every shade, and they look excellent when installed appropriately. However, particular advantages accompany vintage metal kitchen cabinets. Firstly, they’re sturdy. Consider why such a large number of garages come furnished with upright, metal toolboxes. It’s because these storage devices can’t be easily destroyed, look rough and rugged, and keep their contents protected and safe.

You can say the same with retro metal kitchen cabinets, which can stand some beating and yet still look great. Besides, since metal hardware is in style, your new metal cabinetry may already coordinate with your current installations. Below are some different benefits metal kitchen cabinets have over wood cabinets.

First, there is no refacing, ever. In fact, you’ll never need to reface, re-stain, or supplant your door fronts, which eliminates additional maintenance costs and weekend tasks.

Next, you no longer need to stress over peeling paint. Since the kitchen can get truly humid, this can be a typical issue in wood cabinetry, while old metal kitchen cabinets consistently stand up to the moisture.

On the other hand, speaking of humidity, warping is a usual concern among wooden cabinetry. Metal, obviously, has no issues against the warp.

Finally, metal kitchen cabinets are easy to install. Besides, most metal cabinets come pre-assembled, which implies that it comes as is. Hence, all you have to do is screw them into the wall.

Moreover, they will never rust or warp. Also, water cannot damage them. At last, stainless steel cabinets can make a kitchen look bigger since they reflect light.

How Do You Restore Metal Kitchen Cabinets?

Metal kitchen cabinets are a reminisce of the 1940s. Thus, unearthing a lot of these vintage metal kitchen cabinets is a fun find. Moreover, the cupboards will effortlessly supplement any retro theme you are attempting to create. However, rust is the greatest challenge with vintage metal kitchen cabinets. Notwithstanding, getting rid of the rust will make a smooth surface that will acknowledge new paint.

First, clean the cabinet thoroughly with an ammonia-based cleaner and a cloth. Expel all deposits from the surface. Next, with a steel-bristle brush, brush the cabinets briskly back and forth. This will thump free most of the rust.

You can now then sand the cupboards with medium-grit sandpaper to expel extra rust. In addition, the sandpaper will effectively work around curves and corners.

After that, spray the cupboards with phosphoric acid. In particular, phosphoric acid will transform any concealed rust into iron phosphate. Then, let the acid work on the metal cabinet overnight.

Next, brush the iron phosphate crust that developed overnight with a steel-bristle brush. This will get rid of any remaining rust.

Once done, apply a thin layer of oil-based primer to the cupboards using a smooth foam roller. Pick a bonding primer designed for metal surfaces. After that, allow the primer to dry.

Now, it’s time to paint them. First, put oil-based paint into a paint pan. Next, roll a smooth foam roller through the paint, getting rid of the excess paint from the roller. Apply the paint to the metal kitchen cabinets in a thin coat. Then, give the first coat a chance to dry. Finally, apply a second and third coat, utilizing a similar procedure.

What Kind Of Paint Do You Use On Metal Cabinets?

Normal paint won’t adhere to metal kitchen cabinets the same manner in which it would to wood or particleboard cupboards—not for long, in any case. However, if you are willing to make several additional steps, you can use a primer and paint combo that will create a lasting finish for whatever kind of kitchen cabinets.

But you might be wondering. Particularly, what is the best paint for metal kitchen cabinets?

Acrylic Paint

Acrylic paint is a well-known preference for painters since it is water-based. Also, it is simple to clean with water. Be that as it may, when it dries, it becomes water-resistant to protect your painted cabinets.

For the acrylic paint to stick, you should sand the surface first. In addition, you will also need to utilize a primer.

Chalk Paint

Striking and versatile, chalk paint is the favorite paint for enthusiastic DIY-ers. Notably, there is no prep required on your surfaces for this paint to adhere. For chalk paint, you should include wax or some finish after the coats have dried in order to seal the surface.

Spray Paint

If you want to paint with ease, spray paint is your best bet. For spray painting metal cabinets, you will need to clean the surface thoroughly and then utilize a sander to smooth the whole surface you need to spray paint.

Oil Paint

Utilizing oil-based paint with respect to your metal kitchen cabinets may be a bit excessive, but it is unquestionably the choice that gives you the best long term results. In addition, oil paint is extremely thick and made to stand up after for quite some time, which might be what you need if metal cabinets are in a high traffic area.

How Much Are Stainless Steel Cabinets?

Stainless steel cabinets are regularly more costly than even top-of-the-line wood types, but again they are amazingly sturdy and last longer. You can budget at least $350 to $500 per cabinet in solid stainless. On the other hand, allot $750 to $1,000 per custom cupboards, excluding installation. In general, metal cabinets will be more costly than wood cupboards. However, remember that these are just mere guides—the price can get a lot higher based on what you pick.

For instance, let’s say you have 30 cupboards in the kitchen, which is usual for an average to a big home. At $1,000 per cabinet, that brings the cost to a total of $30,000, excluding installation. At the point when the installation is figured in, you could wind up burning around $40,000 or $50,000. Notwithstanding, remember that cabinets are quite often the highest cost in kitchen plan or redesigning.

re Metal Kitchen Cabinets For You?

Metal kitchen cabinets offer a stunning and sleek alternative to the regular scene of wooden cupboards. Moreover, you may find metal cabinets kitchen accessible in a fresh, modern stainless steel, which comes in different hues, antique touch, or the glow of copper.

Either is excellent and provides a superb solution for designing your kitchen as per the subtleties of your own preference for home decor with their bright reflective finishes. In addition, you will find that there are kitchen metal cabinets, which include different wood types into their style. Once you have decided on a pattern, it is time to kick off your project by laying out your tile floor patterns. In fact, knowing how to lay out tile floor patterns will certainly save you time and stress later on.

When you’re assessing the amount of tile you will require for your project, include around 10 percent more tile to your cart. You will eventually end up wasting at least two or three tiles through the installation. Thus, you might need to keep a couple more tiles available for future fixes.

In case you are replacing existing tile or another kind of flooring, you’ll have to get rid of it totally, leaving just the subfloor. Since tile is a lot heavier than other kinds sorts of flooring, you’ll have to include an extra steady layer on top of the subfloor. This is particularly true if the subfloor is wooden. Adhere to the manufacturer’s directions to secure the cement backer board into place, and then you’ll be prepared to tile.

Finally, as long as you have extra time to work and a couple of instruments and supplies close by, laying 12×24 floor tile patterns is a DIY venture that you can pull off. All things considered, here is a list of what you will need to carry on with this project:

How To Design Floor Tile Patterns

It’s important to realize that in installing floor tile patterns in your home, it’s critical to set aside time to discover the ideal approach to organize the individual tiles. In many rooms, square and rectangular tiles will fit together in a straightforward grid pattern. To start with, build up a series of layout lines as your placement guide by discovering the midpoint of each wall and marking a line over the opposite wall. After that, you can start dry-fitting the tiles around the room’s middle point, working your way outward in sections to prevent uneven spacing.

Grid Pattern

The most well-known method for laying out square or rectangular floor tiles is in a basic grid pattern. Based upon the size of your tiles and the room, this can be cost-efficient and simple to apply a layout, since you might not need to cut tiles or experience wastage.

This is one of the ideal rectangle tile floor patterns in case you are utilizing encaustic concrete tiles that have their own pattern; or in the event that you don’t wish to bring a lot of attention to the floor. This straightforward design can likewise be attractive if you want it to be. Moreover, you can effectively utilize contrasting grout to feature the pattern. Also, you can alternate tile colors to make a further layer of pattern to include additional accents to your grid pattern.

MORROCAN TILE

PICKETS

Offset & Harlequin Floor Tile Patterns

Offset pattern, also called Running Bond or Runner pattern, is additionally an easy tile pattern to consider. In fact, it’s like you are laying bricks. In general, this pattern should be possible with either square or rectangular tiles. First, lay the initial row of tiles and afterward, as opposed to running the next row directly under the first, offset the row so the edge of the tile beneath sits at the middle point of the one above.

The upside of this tile pattern is that it makes some additional texture that softens the overall look of the area. Besides, this is specifically useful for kitchen spaces where cupboard and appliance doors can look somewhat sharp and angular. Moreover, it is additionally an incredible floor tile pattern to use with wood-look ceramic planks, as it better emulates genuine wood floorboards.

Exclusively utilized with square tiles, the Harlequin pattern is essentially a grid pattern but set diagonally at 45° to the walls. What this does is to offer an illusion of a larger space, causing rooms to appear larger than they are. Furthermore, it is particularly helpful in areas that have unconventional shapes, as the tile pattern pulls center.

In general, the Harlequin tile pattern is most usually utilized with black and white tiles to make the classic checkerboard pattern but works similarly well with one single tile shading.

DIAMOND

Meriwether Inc

The floor tiles are made by Daltile, from their Natural Hues collection.

PATTERNED TILE

Mosaic del Sur

These Mosaic del Sur encaustic cement tiles are simply stunning!

ITALIAN

Creative Stone & Tile

If you want to have a unique flooring, try a specially designed Italian porcelain like this one.

RED ACCENT

Giulietti Schouten Architects

Porcelain tile installed in a herringbone pattern with custom art glass accent tiles.

Herringbone Pattern

A most loved pattern in the wood parquet flooring area (and one of our preferred floor tile patterns), the Herringbone tile pattern is getting popular among tile fans. In fact, this is to such an extent that there are increasingly rectangular and small plank style ceramic tiles available on the market nowadays. Notably, this striking pattern is created by laying interlocking rectangular tiles set at a 45° angle to the wall. In general, you can lay the pattern length-ways along the longest wall to augment the impact.

The Herringbone tile pattern will be increasingly apparent based upon the size and style of your tiles. In particular, plank-style tiles with a 3:1 proportion will make a crisper, increasingly characterized herringbone pattern specifically when coordinated with dark grout. On the other hand, brick-style tiles with a 2:1 proportion make a more subtle herringbone design. Finally, either choice results in a general look that will add interest and texture to your floor.

Chevron Pattern

Like the Herringbone tile pattern, the Chevron design also has a major spotlight in tile flooring at the moment. In general, this is partially because of its remarkable capacity to make any room look elegant in an instant! You will definitely know Chevron has a moment since tiles producers wherever are reinforcing their collections to incorporate the parallelogram tile shape that one needs for this pattern. In the event that you can’t find that shape in the tile you like, then you can cut rectangular tiles in order to fit the pattern—but be certain to utilize excellent tile cutters to do it correctly.

The Chevron tile pattern is essentially rows of parallelogram tiles, with each line facing the other way to the one next to it, making a V shape. In addition, the perfect way the tiles fit together, the sharp focal line where the V meets, and the textured zigzag horizontal pattern all work collectvely to make this tile design very chic. Furthermore, utilizing slightly differentiating tiles hues to define the zigzags subtly, or mixing block-color tiles with wood-look ones are excellent approaches to work this look.

MOSAIC HEX TILE

Open Door Architecture

These mosaic hex tiles provide exciting accents to this all-white bathroom.

GEOMETRIC

Crogan Inlay Floors

Vinyl tile flooring with a geometric pattern in black and white.

Basketweave & Windwill Floor Tile Patterns

There’s a developing issue with this purportedly conventional tile pattern—everybody is doing various versions! Also, in its most simple structure, the Basketweave tile design is two block formed tiles set evenly against two brick-shaped tiles set vertically. Moreover, it’s a straightforward and simple tile pattern to accomplish and provides a textured field without a lot of effort.

To some degree, more labor-intensive and considerably more textured in appearance, the other Basketweave variant is where you install brick-shaped tiles in an interlocking pattern with smaller square tiles occupying the space in the middle. In case you like this rendition but need a simpler installation, some tile producers have mosaic Basketweave tiles already joined to backing mesh, so you don’t need to mess with the overly small square tiles.

One of the most-loved tile floor patterns, particularly in case you have some exceptional tiles to feature, the Windmill pattern is definitely great. Also made utilizing square and brick-sized tiles, the brick tiles structure a type of frame around the focal square tile. Although this pattern is challenging to lay, it gets faster once you get into the rhythm of the pattern. Furthermore, most mosaic tile creators are currently offering this pattern already backed on a mesh, which obviously makes it simpler.

On the other hand, utilizing the smaller mosaic Windmill variant results in a profoundly textured design that will pull attention in the room, so you can best utilize this with a plain or simple decor theme.

Hopscotch Pattern

Otherwise known as the Pinwheel pattern, the Hopscotch pattern is like the Windmill, although here you just utilize square tiles. In general, a small, square tile is encompassed by bigger square tiles. In addition, it is also possible to replace the single small square tile with four mosaic tiles.

Moreover, the general impact will base upon whether you decide to feature the tile pattern by utilizing differentiating highlight tiles for the small square or employ a similar tile all through to add texture to the visual field. In any case, it is an excellent tile pattern that suits many decor themes.

How to Create a Beach Themed Bedroom

The usual interest in creating a beach theme bedroom is because of the reflective feeling that the beach usually invokes. This kind of atmosphere alone is the best reason why you want to try it as a bedroom interior inspiration. Aside from just relying on the accessories there are also a lot of other ways for your bedroom to completely reflect the beach.

Color Palette

The best aspect of choosing a beach interior design for your bedroom is the color palette that you can actually choose from when you decide to repaint your walls. Since the beach is always associated with the sun’s warmth, the cool breeze of wind and the relaxing feel of the sand on one’s feet, you can recreate this environment by using the colors that would invoke the said elements.

Choosing a color palette for your sea themed bedroom needs to reflect the colors that we usually associate it with, that is why you need to work with the cool colors of blue and white as base. If you don’t want to stay with having a monochromatic room, you can always add contrasting colors of brown, green, yellow, orange and other shades that can help you recreate the beach environment. You can also try to be creative with the use of other colors that you want for your beach themed room as long as it will create that harmony that you want to achieve.

Have a Simple Layout

If you are doing a remodel of your own room, you need to decide if you want to keep the old layout of your bedroom. The most important thing that you need to keep in mind is to not overdo it with the accessories and furniture. Some beach themed bedrooms come off as tacky because of too many added unnecessary “beach related decors”. If you don’t want your room to give off that nautical museum vibe you really need to put extra effort in choosing the right pieces.

Do not force the accessories into your room, let the beach decor be natural and not overbearing. Choose a few pieces that go well with the furniture that you have picked for your room. Rather than being too concentrated on decor pieces that scream of the beach, you need to shift your attention into what will work well with your layout and room floor plan. Work with what your layout can actually offer and pick furniture that will show your personality and add the accents that will complete your desired theme.

MAHALO

RH Teen

BEACH WAVES

Kinderoo Interiors

When painting your walls with a different color appear to be less creative, making use of murals or wallpaper that reflects your theme is the way to go.

SEA BREEZE

Peter Chamberlain Photo

An ocean themed bedroom is not just about the bed, you can also incorporate the theme to your workstation or study area. Work on your walls!

WALL ARTS

DigsDigs

When you don’t want to overdo the beach theme, finding that right focal area and not extending it to other parts of the room still maintains the mood.

Make use of Textures

We’ve been talking about what the beach environment can give us because this theme is not just about what you see.  The experience that you personally have with the scenery is what actually made you decide to incorporate it with your bedroom interior. If you have fallen in love with water front property, a setting sun or had a great time while surfing the waves, this will be enough reason to push through with the beach decor for your bedroom.

Beachy bedroom ideas bring out the texture along with the experience that you had. Aside from your bedcover, accessories such as flor rugs, curtains and wall decors can introduce the texture that will help you complete your dream beach interior. If you really want to mimic the summer texture that you want for your room, you can always blend different paint colors or bring in wallpapers that will help to brighten the room.

WELL INTEGRATED

Living Spaces

Most of the key points needed for the beach themed bedroom decor were successfully integrated in this room. It is bright, airy and full of texture.

TOO COMFORTABLE

Beachfront Decor

Finding solace and having that comfort from the scenery in the beach is not out of reach in this bedroom interior. The accessories are perfect and on point!

PERFECT HIDEOUT

Madison Park

Wanting less for your beach house bedroom can be well executed by having wide windows and light curtains. The combination is just too perfect for photos.

GREAT DETAILS

Deny Designs

The sea themed bedroom won’t be completed without the actual ocean view. How about minimizing the furniture and going all out with the bedspread?

Modern and Traditional Accents

Some homeowners usually use traditional decors that they can think of which reminds them of the sunny beaches and breezy oceans. Beach themed bedroom accessories don’t really need to be all seashells and sandy, there are a lot of modern pieces that can transform your room with less effort. Mixing traditional and modern accents that will go along with the beach colors that you have for your bedroom will complete the contemporary look that you want to dress your room with.

Nowadays, surfboards can be used as accents to your room, especially if you like the sport. It is a great way to give an extra character and personality to your bedroom. Other options for beach themed bedroom decor ideas can be with simple rope rugs and bedspreads with subtle hints of the beach or the ocean. Adding a painting of sea creatures or even some nautical items will be a great accent to your ocean themed bedroom.

Thoroughly planning your beach room ideas and putting them together will be an easy feat if you have a clear picture of what you want in mind. Just like any other theme for your bedroom, outlining the work and following it will be a great way to go about it.

dditional Tips for Your Themed Room

Declutter Your Room

Before you start putting in any additional accents into your bedroom, make sure that you remove all unnecessary items from your room. Anything that has nothing to do with your planned theme should be thrown out or stored properly. Make room for any furniture or accessories that you might want to add in your room. Create a more comfortable space for your beach themed room to be peaceful and calm.

Maximize the Use of Natural Light

Aside from the sea and the sand, another charm of the beach is its natural lights. For you to recreate the interior design properly, you need to make use of whatever natural light that your room is getting. Keep in mind that the lights will play a big factor in order for you to properly carry out this design. If there’s not enough light, you can make use of a mirror to bounce off the light around the room.

THE BEACHFRONT

mber Interior Design

The main attraction of this room aside from its high ceiling is the inviting sliding doors at the side. Can you imagine the breathtaking beachfront behind it?

HIGHLIGHTS

Beth Lindsey Interior Design

When the accessories of your room truly fits the theme, there is no need to overdo it. Creating the beach feels was not very easy for this bedroom.

VIBRANT

Brittney Nielsen Interior Design

The designer delivered an interior inspiration with less beachy themed accessories but more on the vibrant colors we can usually observe in the beach.

SOMETHING OLD

Maries Manor

Yes this is how an old cottage room would feel when the interiors are done properly. Texture, accessories, and the warm vibe makes you feel more relaxed.

Select a Beachy Lamp

Another thing that can set the ambience of the room is the use of beachy lampshades. Instead of using fluorescent white lights, you can try a bulb that gives off an atmosphere of warmth in the beach during the daytime. Choosing blue, green or turquoise light shades is the easiest way to replicate the warmth of the beach splendor.

Use Scented Candles or Air Fresheners

If the lights are not enough, getting yourself beach scented candles and ocean scent air fresheners will also do the trick. The mood will automatically change once these scents are in action. However, before spraying these scents, make sure that your room doesn’t have any other odors. Ventilate your room properly, open the windows to air out your room. After everything smells fresh you can spray or light that candle at once. Always keep an eye on the candles though to avoid accidents.

MINIMALISTIC

Caron’s Beach House

Yes, you heard it right! Here’s how a minimalist beach bedroom should look like. Less highlight accessories and more on the texture that sets the mood.

JUST ENOUGH

Zulily

Want the theme but doesn’t want to overdo it? Make use of less focal points, change the floor rugs and make use of beach colored comforters.

CREATIVE

rt Wall Stickers

What makes this room unique is its creative way of making you feel the beach theme. It is masculine yet soft because of the wall sticker and the warm sheets.

THE CALM

Three Birds Renovations

Does this room also make you think of that calm feeling while snorkeling? Well, we can thank that painting above the bed for that illusion.

Make Use of Murals

Another helpful tip will be to paint a beach themed mural on your walls. Monochrome lovers who don’t want to make use of different shades of paint can also decorate a wall to the theme for it to get along well with the whole design. If you don’t know how to paint, there are wall stickers that can pass off as murals once stuck on the pristine white walls. You can actually buy them from many online stores. One of our featured photos actually made use of the said sticker. Put a little care while working on it so that it will not have obvious creases once stuck.

BARELY THERE

Donna Guyler Interior Design

Yes the theme is barely there, but this bedroom interior is just so relaxing for us not to include on the list. Less is more, yet this design is worth the try.

NAUTICAL BUNK

Chango & Co.

Nautical wallpapers, bunk beds and what looks like a relaxing rattan swing for your kids actually works for their themed room. It looks very inviting and relaxing

Embracing The Coastal Style

With shorelines being such a big draw, it’s no surprise that easygoing coastal style is a popular look, and what better place to develop a similar carefree and serene vibe than in a beach-themed bedroom? Cool colors, well-worn natural textures, and coastal patterns can be used to create a fresh, easygoing style that will make every day feel like a summer vacation.

Begin with the correct backdrop, whether it’s stark, whiter-than-white, a cream-based color, or a stormy grey tone, and create the design from there. Other natural colors to consider include whites, greys, misty greens, marine blues, sand, and driftwood browns.

Use white-painted or weathered-wood furnishings to keep the look fresh but relaxed (the more beaten the better). Then, to soften the plain white or grey palette, add texture to the room with paneling, baskets, woven rugs, and knitted throws or cushions.

Finally, enjoy the holiday spirit with plenty of coastal-inspired items, such as nautical-motif pillows and storm lanterns, and add character to your space with driftwood-look wood.

Final Thoughts

You have all the freedom when it comes to decorating your room. It will be possible to carry out all of your design ideas but you cannot simply give it a go. Whatever comes into your mind you need to list it first, gather all of your ideas and see what would work for your room. Always try to make the interior cohesive, create a more harmonious design by sticking to the basic and knowing the right accessories that you can incorporate.

If you feel that you are going overboard with the beach theme it will never hurt to ask someone else’s opinion. Seeing the whole thing from another person’s perspective might just be the way to keep yourself in check. For any theme that you want your bedroom to have, you always need to keep in mind the preferences that the room owner would love. As long as the theme does not limit the room’s function and the accessories do not get in the way of your daily activities, this beach room design idea will be worth the try.

23 Pink Tile Design Ideas for Your Kitchen & Bath

Featured Image: RLB Architecture

Designing or decorating your home is an enjoyable task. The bedroom and the living room are often the first rooms to get a makeover, but how about the other spaces in your home? Your kitchen and bathroom should not be left behind. The kitchen is probably one of the areas in your home where activities are high – you cook your meals there every day. You should, therefore, make it a place where cooking will be a joy and not a bothersome chore. On the other hand, a bathroom is a place where you do very personal activities, so designing it to give off a vibe that will help you relax is imperative. What do these two areas have in common in terms of the materials used in them? The answer: tiles. Tiles have significant effects on the overall look of your kitchen and bathroom.

Vintage tiles are great to use in the kitchen – whether as flooring, walls, or splashbacks – because you can easily wipe them clean, and they are very durable. In the bathroom, tiles cover almost everything except the ceiling, perhaps. The tiles you choose to use in these spaces will affect the ambiance. With the right tiles, you may feel like walking into a deluxe spa. Aside from the materials, you also have to consider the color of the tiles you will use. We recommend pink tile as the color is calming, letting you chill while doing your activities in these rooms.

The History Of Pink Tile For Kitchen & Bath

In America in the 1950s, pink was one of the most popular bathroom tile colors, with 5 million to 10 million families estimated to have pink bathrooms in their homes. Some even have pink bathtubs, pink toilet bowls, and pink sinks, not just pink tiles! Whether this was a trend is unclear, but these pink bathrooms survived through ages and managed to still be present in many homes today. Some simply find renovating expensive, so they maintained their pink bathroom, while others like the nostalgic appeal the pink bathroom gives.

Also, back in the 50s, pink was a popular color for kitchens, at least for those who were carefree at heart and would not go with the standard colors such as white or wood tones. Others, however, say the pink’s popularity started when then First Lady Mamie Eisenhower, wife of US President Dwight Eisenhower, who was elected into office in 1952, made it known that her favorite color was pink. Since then, pink had been known as a feminine color, and because the kitchen was at that time seen as a place for women, kitchens were often colored pink. Nowadays, women, of course, are no longer bound by such stereotypes, as they have secured their rightful place in society. Though we welcome this change, pink kitchens are still very welcome.

Excited to have your kitchen and bath look fresh? Pink tiles will surely give that effect. These pink tile design ideas will help you if you do not know where to start.

Going With Common Pink Tile Materials

In terms of materials, You have many options to choose from when having pink bathroom tiles or kitchen tiles. The most common ones are ceramic, marble, and subway.

Pink ceramic tiles fit well in kitchens and bathrooms. Their durability and elegance make them perfect as flooring. Because they have a very solid surface, dirt does not easily cling to them, making cleaning with mop or sponge a breeze. Ceramic tiles are also more affordable than other flooring materials.

Marbles are also known for their durability. Builders have used these natural stones for centuries. Pink marble tiles will surely look great on your bathroom or kitchen as flooring. And if that is not enough to convince you to get them, hear this: marbles keep away dust and pollen, making them hypoallergenic and sanitary. And during summer, marble tiles stay cool. Marbles, however, are not recommended to be used as a kitchen countertop because acidic substances used in cooking may damage them.

Subway tiles perhaps are one of the most recognizable types of tiles for the kitchen and bath. These are the 3×6-inch tiles, usually white, laid in a running-bond arrangement. They are called subway tiles because they were first used in the 1900s in subway stations in New York. The tiles being durable and easy to clean made them popular among residential homeowners. Using pink subway tile instead of the usual white will make your kitchen or bath look exciting.

Other Types Of Pink Tiles To Use

If you are worried about solid pink flooring tile being dull, ceramic producers actually have tiles that are embossed or printed, so you will never go out of options. You can have pink tiles with hardwood or natural stone finish. You can also mix and match tile patterns to get a look that you would genuinely appreciate.

If you want your bathroom or kitchen to stand out, install pink glass tiles as backsplash. Their luminosity will surely transform any boring kitchen into a work of art. Another good thing with pink glass tile is that it reflects light, making your kitchen or bathroom look brighter and bigger. Also, because they are easy to install and commonly available in stores, they make excellent materials for do-it-yourself renovations in your kitchen or bath.

Glass subway tiles are also great if you cannot choose between pink subway tile and pink glass tile. Why not have both, right? The glass finish adds a modern twist to the familiar subway pattern. It’s a union of the old and the new.

However, if you want your kitchen and bathroom to be eye-catching, use pink mosaic tile, which is a combination of other materials mentioned earlier. Pink mosaic tiles are perfect if you want your kitchen or bath to be attention-getting geometric patterns. These materials are pieced together like a puzzle to form intricate yet beautiful patterns. You may have various shades of pink and a bit of other colors in your mosaic tiles that you can use as a backsplash, countertop, or even flooring. The tip is not to use pink tile too much and instead just have it as an accent.

What Paint Color Matches Pink Tiles

Now that you know the different tile materials and you have decided to go with a particular type or a mix of different types, you also have to think of the paint that will go with your tiles. After all, not everything in your kitchen and bath will be covered in tiles. Here are some ideas.

To update a vintage kitchen with pink bathroom tiles, paint cabinets, or walls with pastel teal. Teal adds a harmonious contrast to pink because the green in teal and the red in pink are on the opposite sides of the color wheel. Following this, aqua or blues also makes a great choice of paint color.

If you want to make pink still present but not empowering, tone it down with ivory-painted walls and ceiling. Light gray will also work well in toning down the pink tile down. The color can also lower the temperature in a pink kitchen or bath.

You can also paint walls and ceiling in platinum. Paired pair pink tiles, your kitchen or bathroom will look glamorous. If you do not want to go overboard with the paint color to go with your pink tiles, try painting a small portion of the room first. If you get excited upon seeing the combination, then continue painting more.

Other Things To Consider

So you have decided to go with pink tile, and you have identified the material you want. One thing you should not forget is the grout. Since you are going with pink, a choice for grout color would be white, if not a lighter shade of pink. The grout you choose affects the overall look of your tile, so it is of crucial importance.

Other important things to consider are the pink tiles’ finish, durability, and sanitariness. Glossy and smooth tiles, like glass, are more stylish than the tiles with a dull finish. They are good to have on walls or backsplash as they are also easy to clean. For pink flooring tile, you cannot have it too smooth and glossy as it can be slippery. When going with pink ceramic tile as flooring, add abrasive glaze for slip resistance.

Pink bathroom tile may be pretty, but you also have to make sure that it is durable and hygienic. That’s why for recommend pink flooring tile, especially in wet areas, we recommend ceramic tile as they resist moisture and last longer than other materials. Pink marble tile and pink ceramic tile earn another point for being hygienic as they are easy to clean. Therefore, they are also great for the kitchen where you prepare food.

The kitchen and bathroom cannot be dull. We hope you got great ideas to splash them up with pink tiles and admire these rooms daily.

An expert designer can enable you to make it all come together for a style you will love. You can additionally utilize a designer software program or try your hand in the interactive features from home remodeling sites.

If you have black cabinets kitchen, the lighting is as crucial as the color choices to keep a balance between the dark color of the cabinets and the light of the kitchen. So you will have to take into consideration the quantity of natural lighting and windows already within the room and what extra lighting you will need to accomplish the desired effect.

For a big kitchen with a lot of cabinets, think about putting an island with black cabinets in the middle, and then make the majority of the cabinets white. This can provide you a fresh, contemporary look without going totally black so that you won’t overwhelm the senses. A burst of color, such as red combined with tan, makes for the dramatic and exciting look.

Transform A Small Kitchen With Black Kitchen Cabinets

Black kitchen cupboards in a small space? You bet! While it is true that colors that are dark can make space seem to be smaller, it is not often the case. It truly depends on just how much light is in the kitchen. Many property owners are attracted to kitchen with dark cabinets, such as black. When integrated thoughtfully, black kitchen cabinets can render your home design feel stylish and modern, even if you have a small space.

In case you are searching for suggestions on how you can utilize black in your home layout, check out these strategies for tastefully working with black, or maybe some dark cabinetry, in smaller kitchen spaces—without making them feel overly cramped or crowded.

Black Kitchen Islands – Islands are among the most flexible design elements in the kitchen since they include more countertop room for food preparation or even seating— two huge advantages when space is limited. The kitchen below shows precisely how black will help your island mix into its surroundings, particularly with darker flooring. This can help move the distinct focus up and to various areas of the kitchen. Additionally, you can use glass inserts for the cabinet doors on the edge of the island. This is an excellent way to produce the impression of more space.

Glass Cabinet Door Inserts – While we are on the subject of glass, glass cabinets let you see all the way to the rear of the kitchen cabinet. This can help add visible space to the kitchen cabinetry. In case you are not really a fan of clear glass, think about various textures, including frosted and etched glass, that offer far more privacy while keeping a lighter feel and look.

Getting Creative With Black

The kitchen area is a room that inherits the tradition of gathering the household members in a single spot. Today, the kitchen has got the tendency to mainly fulfill the idea of a beautiful and functional space.

Due to its role in connecting the household, it must be positioned in place that is suitable for the home. The arrangements in the kitchen area count on the size and shape of the area.

Sometimes, to get a proper and good arrangement of elements, it’s actually essential to change the position of the windows and doors in the kitchen.

First of all, make a summary of planned components and appliances in the kitchen. The furniture for the home is regularly changing, following the emergence of new products in the kitchen.

When you decide what you should buy, be sure the kitchen is wide enough to store all of the planned elements and appliances since in the contemporary residential spaces, the kitchens usually have smaller dimensions.

With regard to enhancing the cooking area, we recommend the use of the black cabinet in the kitchen. Combined with black kitchen cupboards, lighter countertops reflect light and produce distinctions inside your layout. In order to amplify this particular effect, consider glass ceramic tiles to help you make your kitchen seem to appear bigger. The intrinsic luminosity of glass complements virtually any countertop material and will complete the transition between your dark kitchen cabinets, along with lighter countertops.

The Rise Of Black Kitchen Cabinets

Black kitchen cabinets are becoming increasingly popular. White kitchens have dominated kitchen interior design for many years. In fact, they are admired for their simplicity, cleanliness, and ability to brighten a room. They can, however, necessitate continual upkeep, and anything that doesn’t belong there stands out like a sore thumb.

Today, we see a shift away from white kitchens and toward more color. Two-tone kitchen cabinets have become popular in interior design this year. However, we begin to see what occurs when we look into the opposite of the all-white kitchen fad.

Black kitchen cabinets are sleek and stylish, and they stand in stark contrast to the long-dominant white kitchens. Is the popularity of black kitchens due to a desire to defy fashion? I believe that black kitchens have more to offer than disobedience since they are investments rather than fads.

Final Tips:

In case you’re brave and bold and enjoy its elegance, a black kitchen could be the ideal option for your house. As a neutral color, black never ever goes out of style. One place where it’s specifically used will be the kitchen. The black is extremely flexible, and it may be integrated into the interior of your kitchen in several ways.

Black isn’t merely black! You will find various textures for every shade, and you can select a fascinating texture that can be your guiding principle when designing your stylish black colored kitchen. Matte black kitchen cabinet may be the ideal option for the kitchen area made of wood.

In case you would like a beautiful and luxurious style, we recommend choosing a glossy black which is going to reflect floors and light. Thus, the mix of dark kitchen cabinets with light floors is a wise idea.

Pros:

Variable speedErgonomic gripReasonable cost

Cons:

There is no vacuum-hose adapterThe dust filter sometimes does not stay in place

Sebring Tip:

If you’re searching for an excellent option at a somewhat lesser price than the Bosch Palm Sander, the SKIL SR211601 Random Orbital Sander is a great option. It is powerful at 2.8 amps, and it’s also a little faster, with a maximum speed of 13,000 orbits per minute.

However, while this sander includes an easy-to-clean, highly effective dust collector, it can’t trap particles as fine as the Bosch’s filtration system, and it lacks a vacuum-hose adapter, which would allow you to connect the sander to your shop vacuum.

Pros:

This is a portable cordless random orbit sander. You can bring it to an outdoor job site or a work site that doesn’t have access to electricity yet so you can work.It has variable speed dial. Go from 7,000 OPM to 12,000 with a touch of the dial.It comes with a universal hose adapter, dust canister, extension adapter, and two 80-grit sandpaper.

Cons:

The handle is too chunky to be comfortable. The battery is not yet included in the package.

Sebring Tip:

Milwaukee Electric Tools was established years before sliced bread reached bakeries and supermarkets. It’s one of those brands that you can trust when it comes to quality and reliability. The Milwaukee Electric Tools 2648-20 M18 Random Orbit Sander is no different.

It has a reliable and powerful motor, plus variable speed dial that allows you to control the tool’s performance. Both the on and off switch and the variable speed dial are located on the handle so you can easily reach them.

You’re not limited by a cord, so you can bring it to any job site as long as you have a fully charged battery. It has a plastic dust canister, but you can still connect it to your shop vac thanks to its universal hose adapter.

Keep in mind, however, that this is more expensive than your ordinary starter orbital sander. This is a Milwaukee tool, after all, so this is to be expected.

You can hold the top handle or its pistol grip with one hand as you work or with both hands around the regular handle and the auxiliary handle. The trigger is positioned underneath the handle. It has a lock-on button so you don’t have to keep pressing the trigger while working. The vibration is kept to a minimum despite its powerful motor. You can use the Makita dust bag if using a shop vac is not an option. It is lightweight so you can use it for vertical or overhead applications.

Cons:

It doesn’t come with an adapter for your shop vac.

Sebring Tip:

It’s easy enough to like this Makita BO5041 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander. Its performance is impressive, removing a lot of imperfections on wood and delivering a finish that is free from swirls.

What I like most about it are the multiple handles. You can hold it with one hand (top and pistol handles) or both hands (auxiliary handle and pistol handle). You can say goodbye to aching hands and arms as you sand and finish that large cabinet.

The price is not bad at all considering its impressive performance. Overall, this is a great tool for professionals and hobbyists alike.

Random Orbital Sander 101

Random orbital sanders are power tools used for smoothing, shaping, and polishing different types of materials. It can also be used to remove rust from metal, as well as for stock removal. You can use these tools on different materials, including wood, plastics, non-ferrous metals, and sheet steel.

A random orbital sander is just one of the many power sanders available for hobbyists, woodworkers, contractors, and other professionals right now. There’s the disc sander, belt sanders, detail sander, and drywall sander. Table sanders, orbital sanders, oscillating spindle sanders, and file sanders are also available for different applications.

But if you want versatility and excellent performance, then the random orbital sander definitely has a place in your garage or workshop. This handheld power tool’s design is similar to the regular orbital sander. But instead of a square pad, this particular power tool has a round pad.

The shape of the pad is just one of the differences between the random orbital sander and the regular orbital sander (also known as sheet sander or finish sander). With the regular orbital sander, you have to attach the sandpaper to the tool using built-in metal clamps. On the other hand, the sandpaper or sanding disc is attached to the random orbital sander using hook-and-loop (Velcro) or pressure-sensitive adhesive.

The sanding discs used by random orbital sanders are pre-cut to 5-inch or 6-inch in diameter. These special sandpapers generally come with holes in the middle which you have to align with the holes on your tool’s pad. The purpose of these holes is to draw the sawdust away from the work surface and into the dust canister or your shop vac, ensuring a cleaner and less toxic work area. But there are also some models that use sanding discs that do not come with holes (such as this 3M 20317 Random Orbital Sander

So, why is this particular orbit sander described as “random.” The answer lies in the motion it produces. A regular orbital sander produces a simple back and forth motion while sanding. A random orbital sander, on the other hand, not only produces a back and forth motion, but also an unpredictable or eccentric circular motion while sanding.

Because the orbital or sheet sander simply moves back and forth, it is inevitable for it to leave visible marks on your workpiece. The random orbital sander, however, produces a more aggressive action and removes more stock from your workpiece.

But the good news is the finish it produces is smoother compared to the ones produced by sheet sanders. Plus, the resulting cross-grain scratches are a lot less visible compared to orbital/sheet sanders.

In addition, random orbital sanders also have variable-speed settings that allow you to control the aggressiveness of the sanding action.

But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its disadvantages. The sanding it produces is so aggressive that you have to be careful when leaving it in one area of your workpiece for a long time. And because it is rounded, getting in corners or sanding tight spaces is virtually impossible.

Check out this video for some tips on how to use your random orbital sander properly.

Random Orbital Buying Guide

Dust Collection

Some random orbital sanders include dust bags that catch some of the wood dust produced while sanding. Others include dust collection accessories that can be linked to a regular wet/dry vacuum hose. These dust collecting systems will not eliminate every speck of dust (you should always wear a dust mask when sanding), but they will considerably reduce it, so they’re helpful options to consider, especially if you’ll be sanding indoors.

Power Options

Random orbital sanders are powered by one of three methods: rechargeable batteries, electrical cords, or compressed air (pneumatic). Each option has advantages.

Corded: Corded sanders are always ready to use because there is no battery to recharge, as long as there is an electrical outlet nearby. Connect your corded random orbital sander and begin working.

Cordless: Cordless sanders are helpful when working far from a power source, such as when you’re building a treehouse for the kids and doan’t have an extension cord long enough to reach. The run time of a cordless sander, on the other hand, is limited by the battery (usually 30-45 mins on a single charge). The majority of users have a spare battery on hand.

Pneumatic: Pneumatic sanders, powered by compressed air, are an excellent alternative for the woodworker who has a central air compressor to power various air tools. However, small, pancake-style air compressors are not always powerful enough to run a sander without frequent breaks to recharge with air. Use your pneumatic sander with an air compressor that can produce an air volume of 40 cubic feet per minute (CFM) or greater for the best results.

Variable Speed

Random orbital sanders produce an aggressive sanding motion that can sand  away a lot of your workpiece if you’re not careful. That’s why it’s important to choose a tool with a variable speed setting. The general rule is the wider the range of speed, the better as this gives you more control when it comes to sanding.

The Right Type of Handle

Most random orbit sanders have a palm grip design. This allows you to grasp the top handle located directly on top of the pad and fully control the direction of the tool.

This design, on the whole, is ergonomic and keeps hand fatigue at a minimum. The problem is that some models have a bigger palm grip compared to others, making them difficult to grasp for people with smaller hands.

Palm sanders are ideal for smaller projects thanks to their compact and lightweight bodies. Apart from the palm grip, you can also hold them around the neck for greater control.

If you want greater control and a more secure grip, then check out random orbital sanders with D-handles. Some models even have the trigger switch located right below the handle for a more convenient operation.

If you want to reduce hand and arm fatigue while maintaining a firm grip on your tool, then check if the model has an auxiliary handle. A random orbital sander with an auxiliary handle is more convenient, and you can be assured that you can apply just the right amount of pressure to the tool while working.

It is also easier to use the tool vertically or overhead when it has an auxiliary handle. Some units have built-in auxiliary handles, while others have auxiliary handles that can be adjusted and removed when necessary.

Disk Diameter

Choose a 6-inch random orbital sander if you want to take on larger projects as it covers more area. But if you’re a hobbyist who tackles smaller projects or you want something lighter and budget-friendly, then go for 5-inch random orbital sanders.

Conclusion:

The truth is every one of these random orbital sanders is outstanding in their own way. But, of course, there can only be one, and the best random orbital sander is…

Bosch GET75-6N Electric Orbital Sander

So, what makes it the most outstanding random orbital sander in the list?

What I like most about this 6-inch sander is its ergonomic design. I’m confident that all random orbital sanders in the list perform well and are durable, but you have to consider user comfort if it’s going to be a mainstay in your workshop and you have an extensive project that requires you to sand away at several workpieces for hours on end.

There are a lot of options for handling the tool. There are the barrel and rubber-molded top handles. It also has an adjustable auxiliary handle that makes it easy to work on large surfaces or sand a vertical or overhead surface.

It has a pad guard that protects the front or side surface of your workpiece (in the case of cabinets or floors). It also has a longer dust exhaust port at the side which, for the most part, doesn’t get in the way.

It only has two-speed settings or sanding modes (normal and turbo mode), but it is still possible to get a finer finish when you set it to normal mode and an aggressive performance when you set it to turbo mode.

But it is heavy, so make sure that you consider that before buying this random orbital sander. It is also pricier than your regular random orbit sander. This might not be the ideal tool for you if you’re new to woodworking or you’re an occasional user.

Pros:

The BDEG400 is a valuable purchase because of its tested durability. Compared to other tools, this one is considered affordable. With the hand guard in place, optimal protection while using this grinder is very much assured.

Cons:

The BDEG400 might not be able to accommodate work that requires  higher power levels.Perfect choice for modest jobs but the motor might break down once tested for high volume jobs.

Sebring Tip:

If you are looking for a heavy duty tool, you might need to look for something else. The BDEG400 can handle a modest load of job fit for home remodeling but nothing like the huge scale of industrial work.

Even if this tool is not fitted for heavy duty jobs, most beginners like this grinder because it is easier and more convenient to use. This tool also has a metal case protection that enables ease of storage.

How Are Angle Grinders Used?

An angle grinder is a handheld power tool that is usually used for polishing, sanding, cutting, and sharpening. Depending on the disc or blade inserts you attach to the machine, this tool can do a lot of things for your workshop.

Metal Cleaning – A wire brush attachment is what is needed for your angle grinder if you want to use it to clean rust and dirt from tools and other metal surfaces. To ensure safety, see to it that the brush rolls away from the edge instead of towards it because this might cause the brush to kick-back towards you.Sharpening blades – Angle grinders are just the perfect tool for sharpening different kinds of blades and saw. However, while sharpening your tool using the grinder make sure that the blade guard is positioned to block off sparks from coming towards you.   Cutting (rods, bars, and bolts) – Mounting a metal cut-off wheel to your machine will enable you to cut metal rods, bars, and even bolts. To stop the blade from being stuck, you just need to make sure that the smaller piece falls off on its own. The machine’s weight can do this trick for you if you learn how to properly angle the tool while cutting the piece of metal.Cutting (tiles, concrete, and stone) – Sometimes standard tile cutters might not be able to cut stone or ceramic tiles properly. Using a diamond blade wheel, your angle grinder can make cutting the said materials easily.Grinding and cutting old mortar – You can use a chisel or a hammer when removing old mortar but using a grinder will make the process much faster. Keep in mind to use thicker wheels for the bricks not to get damaged.

Angle Grinder Buyer’s Guide

The usual considerations for hobbyists and professionals when picking an angle grinder are disc size and motor power. These factors aren’t wrong but aside from these two, there are other things that you also need to look at if you will be picking the perfect tool for you. Look at the list below to help you decide on what model to get.

Speed – An average grinder may have a range of 5,000 – 10,000 RPM. Safety risks are involved with machines of higher speed that is why you need to keep in mind your expertise in operating the tool. The excessive speed of a grinder may cause bodily harm to the user and also to the quality of work that it will be producing. A machine that can give you a good speed variation will be your best option. It is vital to choose a grinder that will work for your skill level to optimize the tool’s functionality.Power Source – Choosing between a corded tool and a cordless one comes down to the limitation of work you can do with both machines. The cordless tool will make you wait for about an hour in order to fully charge the battery when you run out of power in the middle of working. While the corded grinder will limit your work and range of motion by its distance to the power source. This simply means that each tool has its own merits that is why you need to be knowledgeable as to how and when you will often be using the grinder.Wattage – Most of the time, wattage indicates the grinder’s power level. Aside from that, it will also give you an idea of how durable the tool was manufactured. Tools with higher wattage are made with motors that are engineered for heavy use. Safety Features – As previously mentioned, this type of tool is considered to be dangerous by many. This is the exact reason why most manufacturers make this tool with hand guards. Having this protective measure will secure your hands from sparks and splinters. Dust Sealed – Having a dust sealed design for your angle grinder will protect the model of your tool. Incorporating a special seal or a unique design pattern that keeps the dust from the motor of the tool is how it is usually accomplished. When most of the sensitive electrical workings of the motor is protected from dust, your tool will surely be of use for a much longer time. Price – As always buying a tool that will cost you an arm and a leg will not be worth it if you will only be using it for minor carpentry or masonry works. You can always opt for affordable angle grinder models. Getting a fairly decent tool that can handle your range of work is enough.

Conclusion:

Investing your money on a power tool which will make every dollar’s worth is the ideal way to go. There are a lot of choices for what we can consider as the best angle grinder in the market. However, as the person who will be using it for the job that you will be finishing, what matters the most is your final decision.

Even though grinders come with higher price tags than usual, budget buyers will surely find the tool that will fit within their spending money. Doing some research and scouring the internet for useful information might lead you to choose the perfect equipment. I hope we were able to help you out.

Pros:

The drilling jig can be removed to accommodate different-sized workpieces.Jig can be secured to the workspace to prevent slippage. The adjustable depth adjustment knob ensures precise holes. It is lightweight due to its aluminum body. The built-in dust collection makes cleaning and maintenance a breeze.Massca’s extra accessories are free of charge.

Cons:

In comparison to other brands, there are just two drill jigs available.

Sebring Tip:

Plastic parts don’t always stand up to the demands of DIY work, which is why Massca’s aluminum pocket hole jig is such an appealing solution. This set performs everything a good pocket hole jig should do and more. Because of its long-lasting all-metal structure, this jig will be producing pocket holes for a long time. When you applied rivals’ jigs to wood, you may have felt clumsy and even dusty. With this set, you won’t have that problem. A fast pull on the clamp’s handle secures the piece, and a rubber bumper protects the wood. With an easy turn of a knob, you may modify the depth setting. As you drill, a dust spout connector keeps your workstation clean. This pocket jig also comes with a set of tools, including a stop collar, drill bit, hex key, and a starter set of screws.

Pros:

The General Tools 854 Adjustable Pocket Hole Jig is one of the most durable pocket-hole jigs on the list thanks to its all-metal construction. The clamp is already integrated into the body, so there’s no need for you to buy a separate one.The drill bit, stop collar, and hex wrench are already included in the package. You’ll also get a square drive bit, wood screws, and hex head screws. It is an affordable pocket-hole jig.

Cons:

The body is made of aluminum. While it is lightweight and durable, it sometimes feels flimsy. It does not come with a carrying case, so get a box for it or place it where you can easily find it.

Sebring Tip:

This General Tools 854 Adjustable Pocket Hole Jig is a departure from the usual nylon pocket-hole jigs we have on this list. It has all-aluminum construction, ensuring a lightweight yet durable construction. Perhaps a little too lightweight for some people, but it will do if you’re a DIYer or even a professional.

What I like about it is its built-in clamp. You don’t need to buy a separate clamp unlike other pocket-hole jigs in the list.

Some accessories are already included (hex wrench, step drill bit, stop collar, etc.). This is a good starting pocket-hole jig for DIYers and professionals alike, but it could use some improvement.

Pros:

The stop collar, drill bit, hex key, and an assortment of screws are already included. This is a lightweight and portable pocket-hole jig.It comes with a durable carrying case.It is the most affordable pocket-hole jig on the list.

Cons:

While portability is one of its main advantages, it does have a flimsy feel to it.The guide holes are lined with aluminum not hardened steel.

Sebring Tip:

If you’re new to woodworking and you’re not sure if you’re going to stick to this new hobby, then the Massca Twin Pocket Hole Jig Set is a good starter tool for your arsenal. It is easy to use, and it comes with a few of the accessories that you need to get started, such as the drill bit, stop collar, hex key, and a few screws.

It is the most affordable pocket-hole jigs in our list. But keep in mind that this is a very basic set, so the cost of purchasing a clamp, compatible screws, and other accessories can add up to the cost.

I really like its lightness, but that can be worrying especially if you want to use it for many months. The guide holes are also made of aluminum and not hardened steel (as is common), so consider that before buying.

Sebring Tip:

What’s great about this MulWark Pocket-Hole Jig System is that it already has the important accessories you need to finish your project. From the drill bit to an assortment of screws, everything you need is right here.

But you might need to fork out additional money for the clamp if you don’t have one in your workshop. You might not also like the plastic screw plugs that are included in the package. Just buy one from your local hardware to apply finishing touches to your shelf, table, or bench.

What Is A Pocket-Hole Jig?

You’re welcome to skip this section if you’re an experienced builder or DIYer and you’re just here for the product reviews. But if you’re new to woodworking or you simply want to buy a gift for your dad, husband, or boyfriend and you’re clueless about how to start, then read on.

A pocket-hole jig is a popular woodworking joinery tool used to easily drill pocket holes into wood at a certain angle. After drilling a hole in one piece of wood using a drill bit, you then attach the first piece to the another piece of wood with a self-tapping pocket screw attached to a square driver bit.

The result is a stronger joint and more superior furniture that will likely last for many years. You don’t have to glue (although you can do that too) the pieces of wood together to create a stronger joint as the angled screws take care of that.

Check out this video for a demonstration on how a pocket-hole jig works.

Make no mistake. You can drill pocket holes even without using a pocket-hole jig or you can just toenail it, but this tool offers more accuracy and precision as it already has a wood thickness measuring the scale at the sides, as well as a drill depth setting scale. These tools make your work more efficient as they take the guesswork out of joinery.

Drilling a pocket hole without a pocket-hole jig might also damage the wood you’re working. The joint it produces is weaker, and the angles of the holes you will drill will likely not be consistent with each other.

Take a look at this video to learn more about the pros of using a pocket-hole jig.

Tips On Buying The Best Pocket-Hole Jig

Material

The majority of pocket-hole jigs are made of two different materials: nylon 66 and aluminum. Both are durable and lightweight, but each has its pros and cons.

Nylon 66 (also known as nylon 6.6 or nylon 6,6) looks a lot like regular plastic. The difference, however, is that nylon 66 is stiffer and more resilient, making it perfect for any woodworking workshops. It can also resist extreme temperature, and doesn’t warp easily.

Aluminum pocket-hole jigs, on the other hand, are also lightweight and durable. Plus, they are corrosion-resistant.

Both nylon 66 and aluminum pocket-hole jigs are affordable. It’s rare to find a pocket-hole jig that costs more than $40 even when a variety of accessories are included. There are just some brands (Kreg, for example) that are more expensive than most in the market.

Make sure that the guide holes have a hardened steel core too.

Number Of Holes

Dual-hole jigs are the most popular configuration on the market. It will do whether you’re a woodworker or a DIYer.

There are single and triple hole configurations (such as the ones produced by Kreg), but these are relatively rare.

When buying a pocket-hole jig for the first time, make sure to choose one that already includes accessories, such as the step drill bit, a stop collar, square drill bit, and a hex key.

A good pocket-hole jig system also includes an assortment of square drive screws in varying sizes, dowels (either wood or plastic), and a carrying case to keep them all together.

Also, some pocket-hole jigs have built-in clamps, while others have clamps included in the bundle. Others, on the other hand, omit the clamp entirely. Make sure that you have a clamp at home or you’re planning to buy one if a clamp-less unit strikes your fancy.

Conclusion:

What most impressed us was their adjustable depth setting knob. You can easily adjust the depth of the drill on your wood piece. It accurately measures the depth of the hole and eliminates splinters during drilling.

You must have encountered difficulties in stabilizing the wood piece while drilling. If this is the case, the Smart clamping pad on this jig is specifically designed for you.

You can now snugly lock your wooden piece to the jig punch for smooth and effortless drilling; it also prevents your drill from breaking at high speeds.
