Place An Order For Supplies And Materials, Organize Tools

Prepare for the project by ordering the required supplies and materials. The delivery might take time, so plan ahead before the installation. If you are using local materials, buy the materials early to provide enough time for primer coating before installation.

Consider Prefinishing Siding Product

In case you’re not buying a prefinished siding item, consider painting or staining your material before installation. You need to prime the backs of the boards before putting them up in case you want to finish them after installation.

When the board is set in place, utilize a level to plumb the board and then drive fasteners to join it to the wall. Drive fastener heads just flat to dodge clasp divots that can hold water. Keep in mind that fasteners need to get into solid wood.

There are many places around your home you can add a mirror. An obvious place is the living area. A large wall mirror with a detailed frame can be just as elegant as an elaborate painting.

Other places include the hallway (along the wall or at the end), the bedroom, along the stairway and the entryway. You can even install a mirror outside on the porch or on a wall adjacent to the garden. The latter is an especially good idea for those with small gardens. The mirror creates a perception that the flowers have spread further than they actually have.

Whatever locations you choose, the secret to decorating with mirrors is positioning and knowing how to mix and match. Make sure the mirror properly captures any light coming in. After all, the beauty of a mirror is coaxed out by light. If there is too little or no natural light hitting the mirror add your own light fixtures. An overhead or wall light directed towards the mirror will create a beautiful effect.

In larger areas such as the living room, hang several mirrors with varying shapes and sizes. Just make sure the mirrors are complementing each other and not competing for attention. With decorative wall mirrors, the framing plays an even bigger role in the overall design. As much as you may want different frame styles for different mirrors, stay within a specific theme. There are plenty of vanity mirror ideas to borrow from. For instance, you can avoid the traditional rectangular mirrors and get a round vanity mirror installed. If you feel like round is still too traditional, there are many other shapes–heart, wavy, oval and diamond.

One other popular way to add the “cool factor” is to add lighting around the mirror. LED strip lights can turn your mirror into a beautiful focal point around which the rest of the bathroom decor flows. Did you know you can also buy bathroom mirrors that are already fitted with lights?

1. Decide on the Thickness

When buying a mirror, one of the features to check is the thickness. The thicker the mirror, the more expensive it will be.

The thinnest mirrors measure around 2.5mm to 3mm in thickness. Small bathroom and dresser mirrors are often this thin. For bigger vanity and decorative mirrors, the average thickness is between 4mm and 6mm. For much larger decorative mirrors, the glass can be as thick as 9mm. For projects such as a kitchen backsplash or a mirror accent wall, talk with your contractor to figure out the best thickness. For smaller projects, the average 4mm-6mm thickness is good enough.

Also consider the thickness of the framing. Thin frames tend to have a sleek modern look and are better for expanding a room visually. Thicker and wider frames on the other hand cast a homely country feel.

2. Use Mirrors to make the Room Feel Larger

If you have a room that feels small and stuffy, mirrors will come to your rescue. Put one large one on the wall or hang two big ones on opposite walls. The mirrors create the perception of depth and expansiveness. If you have a window in the room, put the mirror opposite it. By reflecting the light coming in, it will create an airier and lighter space.

3. You Don’t Have to Hang it

Yes, you don’t have to hang a mirror. One alternative is to place a full-size framed mirror on the floor and let it lean against the wall. This is especially ideal for bedrooms. Place the mirror at the end of the bed or beside it. You can also position it opposite a piece of art you want reflected back at you.

4. More Mirrors for a Bigger Space

If you have an expansive living room, hang more mirrors to match. They can even be identical, hang in symmetry across the wall. Make sure the mirrors align with something in the room such as the sofa, a dining table or the windows on the opposite wall.

For smaller spaces, be careful not to overwhelm the room with too many or excessively large mirrors. It might fill more like funhouse than a home.

5 Factors to Consider When Setting up a Cozy Nook

1. How Big Do You Want It?

By their definition, nooks are small spaces. So most of the nook ideas you will come across feature tiny spaces turned into cozy spots. But a nook can also be big and even fill up an entire room. It all depends on what you need.

If you are creating a reading nook for your two kids, you need to make sure it is big enough for both of them. If the space needs to accommodate 3 or more kids, why not turn the attic into a nook where they can play, read and have fun?

One of the things homeowners ignore when designing a basement kitchenette is maintenance. Simply because you have added space to your home does not mean that you have to saddle yourself with even more endless cleaning. Keep things simple and use materials that are easy to clean. For the flooring, materials like vinyl and tile are great. Wood is not so advisable considering that a basement is likely to be more humid than the rest of the house, which makes it a bit harder to maintain. For the countertop, choose laminate, quartz, recycled glass and other low-maintenance materials.

2. Go Neutral

When it comes time to paint the walls, neutral colors are better. Colors like beige, gray and white create a light and airy atmosphere that can be helpful in space where space is limited. 5. Keep to the Basics

It is tempting to try and include everything in a kitchenette, attempting to turn it into a full mini-kitchen. But instead of a full functional kitchen, you will be left with a stuffy and cluttered space that no one enjoys. Instead, keep everything to a bare minimum.

As for the appliances–no more than three or four large ones. The most important ones are a mini-fridge (or a full one if you have the space), a microwave and a coffeemaker. If you have the space, you may be able to add a few additional small appliances.

Do not be tempted to go overboard with the cutlery. It will make it easier to maintain the kitchenette. The same goes for food items. Keep only a few snacks, beverages and things like coffee and tea.

Basement decoration is generally easy thanks to the open space. It is a good idea to begin with a general theme in mind. Do you want a minimalist ultra-contemporary look or a more laid back traditional decor? Do you prefer warm colors or the space-creating effect of neutral hues?

Once you decide the overall style you want, you can go ahead and choose the various colors and decorations you will use. This is easy if you have set up a single room only such as a bedroom. If your basement is going to look modern and clean, storage is essential. Whether you are setting up a bedroom, play area or family room, you are going to need a variety of storage spaces.

To retain the modern minimalist look, we recommend built-in shelves and cabinets. Try to include a wide variety from wall cabinets to pull-out drawers and wall shelves. Make sure that everything is easily accessible. For kids areas, go with low storage options that they can access without needing your help.

Some places also require fire safety measures to be put in place.Tackle the plumbing and wiring first before you begin any decorations. A Guide to Buying a Water Dispenser in Singapore

If you are looking to get a water dispenser for your home, chances are you aren’t looking for a machine that just dispenses hot and cold water. You are most probably looking for a device that can also filter out contaminants from the water or better yet, a gadget that can give you supposed additional health benefits.

Water dispensers with filters do give some of you peace of mind, so we aren’t here to see if their purported benefits hold true or not. This guide instead will look at some of the considerations you should take when buying one. We will also explore a few products and brands available in Singapore so you can get a better idea of where to shop.

Filter types/technologies

Sediment: When looking out for water dispensers, one of the very first things you want to check out are the filters they have. Most are equipped with a variety of filters that serve different functions. The most basic of which is a filter, made from materials like ceramic or polypropylene, that removes suspended particles, rust and other sediments.

Carbon/activated carbon: There are water dispensers that come with carbon and activated carbon filters that remove odours, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as well as chemicals like chlorine through absorption.

Ultrafiltration: This filter removes particles as small as 0.01 micron. It eliminates viruses, bacteria and suspended solids.

Reverse osmosis: Water dispensers with reverse osmosis (RO) filters allow only water molecules to pass through it. They remove contaminants like lead, arsenic, fluoride and nitrates, as well as viruses and bacteria to leave you with a clean, “soft” water. But the downside to RO is that it also removes important minerals along the way.

Nanofiltration: This filter type is similar to RO (although it has slightly larger pores) and can eliminate contaminants as small as 0.001 micron. What’s different is that it allows certain minerals such as calcium and magnesium considered beneficial to us to pass through. It also softens the water like RO.

Alkaline: Water dispensers with alkaline water options claim to balance out the pH levels in your body. Alkaline water typically has a pH of about 8 or 9, which is believed to neutralise the acid waste build-up in our bodies.

The science of this, alas, isn’t definite, and the counter claim is that acid is necessary in our bodies because it helps to aid in digestion, but there are lot of people who do see and feel the benefits of drinking alkaline water, so you will have to decide if it’s something you want in your water dispenser.

Deionisation: Some water dispensers will also provide deionised water that is usually used with a number of other filters. The deionisation process is a chemical purification process to remove ions in the water. It uses ion exchange resins to replace minerals and contaminants such as calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium, chloride, sulfates and nitrates with hydrogen and hydroxide ions that recombine to form water. The result of deionisation is a purer, “softer” form of water with no minerals and salts. As a side note: PUB categorises our water as only “moderately soft”.

UV filter: A UV filter exposes harmful pathogens like bacteria and viruses as well as other living organisms to UV light, killing them. However they do not get filtered out, which is why a water dispenser with a UV filter needs to work with other filters.

For reverse osmosis and alkaline water: Coral Pure Premium 9

There are nine filters in Coral Pure’s Premium 9 water dispenser. These include a reverse osmosis and alkaline filter. To work around the loss of minerals, the dispenser is also able to generate back 72 types of natural minerals including calcium, magnesium and zinc.

It comes with a carbon block filter that removes chlorine as well as a nano positive filter that eliminates germs, heavy metals, moss all while preserving the good minerals.

Tank or Tank-less?

When buying a water dispenser, consider how much space you would like to set aside on your countertop for it. For smaller homes, new and trendy tank-less options take up significantly less space. In lieu of tanks, they have cooling and heating pipes that provide instant hot and cold water. This does mean that they will need direct piping to a water supply. Tank-less dispensers have less chance of contamination since there isn’t any stagnant body of water for bacteria to grow.

Small, yet stylish: Wells The One

This tank-less, eye-catching water dispenser comes in three hues, white, red and black, and features an ultra-slim design with an 8.8cm diameter so that it doesn’t take up a lot of space on your kitchen countertop. The normal filters remove heavy metals and microorganisms but you can opt for an alkaline filter for alkaline water.

Water dispensers with tanks come with hot and cold water tanks that store water. These are bulkier, but they are also higher capacity and they dispense water at a faster rate compared to tank-less models. Some are installation-free and portable without needing to be connected to a water supply, so you can place them anywhere in the home. The downside to them is that they are constantly using power since the water in the tanks need to be constantly heated to stay hot.

Don’t like the hassle of installation? Consider Novita’s W11, which needs zero installation. It comes up with a 4.6-litre tank and has five temperature settings. Water also gets dispensed really quickly—just one sec for a cup of 90 deg C hot water. It features a 5-stage filtration system, including one that removes heavy metal ions.

Temperature and water volume settings

Like having your tea at a specific temperature? Want to ensure your baby formula is at a safe enough temperature for your baby? Need to down a chilled drink after your workout? You will want to go for a water dispenser that has different temperature settings to suit different needs. The more, the merrier, obviously, but you should make sure they have at least hot water, warm water, room temperature water and cold water settings.

Water volume settings are also another bonus feature to look out for. No need to lug out the measuring jugs when you know precisely how much water it dispenses each time depending on the button you press. Convenient if you are making instant teas and coffees or for following recipes.

Maintenance

Consider also the amount of maintenance needed and whether that will be at a level you are comfortable with. Some will require regular servicing, which will incur a charge at your end. What’s more popular nowadays are those with self-cleaning, sterilising functions, so these machines basically clean themselves.

Most will require you to change the filters regularly. How long before you need to change the filters will depend on usage. On average, it’s about six to 12 months. Filter replacement is usually DIY, but you will need to pay for the new filters.

All you have to do is pull out the front facade, twist and turn out the old filters, lock in the new ones and place back the cover. Other features to look out for

Child-safety lock: A must if you have young children at home or you are planning to locate your dispenser at an accessible location. You don’t want them fiddling around with the buttons on your water dispenser and accidentally scalding themselves with the hot water.

Price of filters: Besides looking at the price of the machine, you will want to account for the prices of the filters since you are likely replacing them once every 6 months or so.

Energy saving: Water dispensers with tanks tend to continually use power even when you are not using it since they will need to keep the hot water tank warm and ready for use. So it’s best to pay attention to the power usage and whether there is an eco mode.

Tank-less options aren’t as big an issue since they don’t use power when not in use.

Adjustable or removable drip tray: This is not only useful for cleaning, it is also a good-to-have if you want to fill up taller containers or water bottles.
