We have seen some good video game rooms, we have seen some unique ones, and we have certainly seen some wild ones. For video game lovers, having the right place to play your games is essential to your enjoyment and comfort. You could choose to play on the couch in the living room or on your bed but your back will punish you for it, not to mention all the disruptions from other people. Having a dedicated video game room allows you to play in quiet and comfort.

Video Game Room Design Considerations

There are no hard and fast rules regarding how you should set up your video game rooms. Different people will have varying tastes and needs. But there are some basic foundations you need to consider as you set up the ultimate video game room.

Comfort – Chances are you are going to be seated most of the time. Thus, it is extremely important that you be as comfortable as possible. Look for a chair that is soft and provides proper support to your back and spine. You should not experience any back pain by the end of your playing session.Cooling – gaming computers need to be powerful and this means they produce plenty of heat. The most important thing to remember when setting up your game room in the basement is safety. Make sure the basement is built to the required safety standards. This means having a second escape exit, smoke detectors, fire sprinklers and so on.

Not everyone has an unused basement or extra room lying around the house. In that case, you have to adapt to your current situation. One idea is to set up your gaming center in the living room. Note that this only works if you are single or have no kids around.

To prevent cables from messing up your living room style, buy one of the many cable organizers available in the market. Don’t forget to include adequate storage for your video games and other items instead of leaving them strewn all over the place.

3. The Corner Spot

If you cannot get an entire room to yourself, the corner spot gaming station is your best option. Depending on the situation at home, you can choose a secluded spot in the living room, the bedroom, your own home office or the home library.

Like the living room game center discussed above, you have to keep things minimal and neat. Get enough shelving for all your stuff and have a cable organizer at hand to keep your gaming area clean. You might need additional lighting around your spot, maybe a fan to wad away the heat and definitely a pair of gaming headphones to keep the noise to yourself.

4. Themed Game Room

One of the reasons why we highly recommend you use an entire room as a gaming center is the design freedom you get. Since it is your personal space, you can pretty much design it in any way you want. If you want to really personalize the space and create the best gaming atmosphere, choose the right theme.

Most gamers use their favorite games to theme their video game rooms. You can go vintage and create a Super Mario themed room with elements from the first Mario games released in the 1980s. If you are crazy about racing games, deck out your game room in all the racing posters and paraphernalia you can get your hands on. Same goes if you love swords, fighter jets games and sports games.

Some go beyond gaming to theme their rooms after their favorite movies. So if you have particular leanings toward Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean or Fast and Furious, feel free to theme your game room accordingly. This is especially if your game room also doubles up as a movie room.

5. The Minimalist Den

Video game rooms are often associated with miles of cables running across the room, tech hardware strewn all over and bits and pieces laying around without any apparent organization. Wherever you can, cut out the cables and opt for wireless hardware.

6. The Attic Game Room

If not down below in the basement, what about up above in the attic? The attic is a great place to set up a video game room. It is secluded and usually spacious. Talk with a contractor about what renovations are needed to convert the attic into a functional video game room.

One issue you have to focus on is temperature control. The attic is often vulnerable to extreme heating in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. We recommend looking at various insulation options for the attic. Again, this is an issue you should discuss with your contractor.

There are tons of sports ideas you can use when decorating the bedroom, as you will see in the images below. You can use actual sports items such as balls, a basketball basket, or hockey sticks. Instead of physical sports items, you can paint them on the walls. Another idea is to put up sports memorabilia around the bedroom. If the room is shared by more than two kids, you can find a single theme all of them love or allow each to select uniquely themed bedding.Do not do anything permanent. When you are choosing materials and items to decorate the bedroom, choose those that can be removed or painted over easily. As they grow, kids change quickly. They may love football this year, but are all about basketball the next. Some may even abandon their love for sports especially as they grow into their teenage years. With this in mind, do not make any permanent changes unless absolutely necessary.Be careful not to overdo it. Choose the colors carefully to prevent the bedroom from getting too overdone. Wainscoting provides the perfect mix of function and style by adorning the lower half of walls while also protecting the wall from scuffs and smudges. This form of wall paneling started back in 1300s primarily as a way to shield the lower half of plaster walls from damage from things like chairs and boots. Today, they make up an important part of interior design, helping add some warmth and style to a space. Wainscoting is especially great at styling up bare walls that would otherwise look dull and boring.

Traditionally, wainscoting (typically pronounced as Wayne’s-Coating) is made from solid wood panels. But these days, there is so much more variety in materials. You can get it in plastic, plywood or medium fiber board (MDF). For more money per square foot, you can get yourself custom made hardwood wainscoting panels. Other materials used, though less commonly, include stone, tile and acrylic.

Back in the 18th century, before central heating, putting the wood to the lower part of a wall was an elegant and inconspicuous way to insulate a space. But just because wainscoting isn’t needed to keep your home warm doesn’t mean it’s lost its allure. With the correct combination, this once-outdated element can feel shockingly new and current.

What Is Wainscoting?

Wainscoting (or paneling) is a wall covering usually used for decorative purposes to provide architectural detail to an interior area.

Wainscoting was initially employed for two reasons: to insulate the chilly stone walls of ancient houses and to keep moisture out.

That is no longer the case, and the purposes and materials employed have developed significantly throughout the years.

The chosen material in 18th century Europe was light oak wood, but today it spans from other types of wood to plastic and fiberboard.

Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) engineered wood is a popular paneling material because it is denser than plywood and easier to work with.

Wainscoting panels are made out of a frame (rails and stiles) with a flat panel inside.

They might be flat (flat panel wainscoting) or elevated (raised panel wainscoting) (raised panel wainscoting).

The only distinction between the two kinds is the panel itself, not the frame.

Batten And Board

Board and batten wainscoting is made up of broader boards alternated with narrower battens.

This style adds informality to wainscoting and is even used for building exteriors.

The battens’ role is to provide strength to the structure.

In a small space where every single inch counts, sliding barn doors come in handy. A well installed sliding barn door offers great space economy for whatever room you use it in. Of course, you need to have enough adjacent wall space for the barn door to slide over when it is opened. But this is often preferable to similarly space-saving pocket doors that require much more work to install or remove.

A small disadvantage with sliding barn doors is that they may not close as quietly as traditional doors. But a good contractor should be able to install it in such a way that noise is reduced to a minimum.

Another advantage of sliding barn doors is their support system. Sliding barn doors use a track for movement. The entire weight of the door is therefore distributed along the length of the track. This allows for the installation of heavier-than-usual doors without affecting stability of ease of movement. For places that need more security but are limited in space, a heavy sliding barn door would work just fine.

There is also, of course, the aesthetics side of the sliding barn door craze. Some sliding barn doors have this rustic outdoorsy feel that creates a stunning contrast when indoors. This contrast is especially enhanced if the door is styled in a worn, rustic design that makes it seem like it was taken right from the barn outside and installed inside.

It glides to the side and hangs neatly against the wall, rather than opening and closing like a standard door. Coordination of hardware on a barn door is more about function than appearance. Remember, the hardware and door must extend past the opening, so make sure you have enough space and position the hardware, so the door slides past the wall base. The door should be wider than the opening, with the hardware on the outside edge.

How Much Space Do You Have To Work With

Many individuals with mobility impairments prefer to have a walk-in shower, while people who appreciate a good soak in a tub might not want a shower at all. The shower or tub will take up more space in your bathroom than any other fixture, so you’ll end up designing a lot of your space around it. That means that you should be clear on your preferences ahead of time. Be realistic when making this decision. If you really prefer baths to showers but find that much of the time, you’re hurrying through your bathing routine in the shower, you might need that shower more than you think. If you have small children, on the other hand, giving up the bathtub altogether probably isn’t a wise decision.

If a homeowner has the privilege of having more than one bathroom in the house, having a walk-in shower if you can in one of them is an excellent option. Have you already had a shower elsewhere in the house? Then, in the current renovation, a tub is usually sufficient. Otherwise, you should add a walk-in shower, if only as a long-term investment.

One of the many things you have to plan for when it comes to your home renovation is where to locate your lighting and electrical points. It’s not easy right off the bat, but we’ll guide you along and present some questions for you to think about as you do up your lighting and electrical plan along with your interior designer or contractor.

Plan waaay in advance

Plan early. It doesn’t have to be set in stone from the start, but you do want a proper idea of where the power points and switches go. A good interior designer or a contractor will do this with you in the early stages of your renovation.

Having a plan early will give allowances for switches and other power points when planning for built-ins. Knowing where everything goes allows the professionals to do the necessary carpentry work for any concealment if necessary. Get started on the lighting and electrical points once your interior design is more or less finalised and preferably before any work commences.

For homeowners considering a smart home system, make sure you accommodate for that early on. If you are going for the basics e.g. smart light bulbs, you may not need to plan for that at this stage. However, if you are going for the full kit (video doorbell, digital lock, motion sensors, light switches, etc.), you will need to do some wiring work, which is better done at the renovation stage than after.

Do several walkthroughs

When planning the lighting and electrical points for your home, you will want to do several walkthroughs in your new place. If you can, get everyone in the household involved because each one of us has different needs.

Go room by room and think about how you’ll spend time in each space. Think about the positioning of your furniture and built-ins and have an idea of where they should go. Think about where the electronics and appliances will be located.

Once you have a rough gauge, mark them out on your floor plan. In the subsequent walkthrough with your interior designer or electrician, pay heed to their professional opinions, in the aspects of safety, practicality and outlook and then adjust accordingly.

Understand the three types of lighting (ambient, task, accent) for each space

Consider a layered lighting approach when planning out the lighting points. Not every space will need all three types of lighting, but it’s good to have a variation as it adds to the depth and function of the space.

Ambient lights refer to a general type of lighting that will be able to light up the entire area evenly. Task lights are more focused and are targeted at areas where you need to handle tasks. Accent lights are for ambience, to uplift the mood, highlight certain features or boost the aesthetics of a room.

Here’s an example of how you can do up your lighting plan for the different areas of the home:

Kitchen / Dining

Ambient: Recessed lighting or flush mount lighting

Task: Concealed LED strip lights under cabinets (to light the prep counters and cooking zone), lights inside drawers and cabinets, pendant lights over the island and dining table

Accent: Toe-kick lights, wall sconces

Pro tip: When planning where your recessed lights should go, make sure the light source isn’t blocked when you open up a top cabinet door.

Living Room

Ambient: Recessed lights, flush mount or a large pendant light if you have enough height

Task: Adjustable floor lights or swinging wall lights for reading

Accent: Spotlights casting light at pictures, table lamps or track lights to highlight certain features

How many power outlets and switches and where to locate them?

The number of outlets you need in each room will depend on the number of electronics and appliances you have and how many are used at a time. Also consider any plugged-in lighting you may have and make sure you account for the existing outlets you are planning to keep.

You don’t need one outlet for every single electronic or appliance, only for those that are permanently plugged in. For everything else, think about the frequency of use and the number of electronics or appliances you are using at any one time.

How do you usually spend time in each room? Take into consideration your lifestyle habits before allocating the positioning of switches and outlets. And if they tend to stick out against your sleek interiors, you will also want to think about how to conceal them.

Here are some tips when planning out switches and electrical outlets:

Kitchen / Dining

Appliances that are usually fixed in place: Hob, hood, ovens, refrigerator.Countertop appliances: How many will be left out on the counters—those will require fixed outlets. These appliances are commonly left on counters: Kettle, steamer, air fryer, blender, rice cooker, toaster, coffee machine, pressure cooker, etc.For appliances don’t have a permanent place on the counter, where are they usually used? You’ll want to locate a couple of outlets there to make sure cords aren’t running across the stove or across the floor.Do you have a baking station? Include outlets for appliances like your stand mixer.Most portable appliances don’t have very long cords, so you’ll want to make sure the outlets for them aren’t located too high.Will you be using any appliances/electronics at the dining area e.g. hot pot, fan, etc? If so, you’ll want to include an outlet near the dining table.Will you be working at your dining table? If so, include extra outlets for charging laptops and phones.Group several outlets together to minimise visual clutter.Where to hide outlets? Underneath top cabinets, within cabinets, the side of counters and cabinets, recessed outlets and blending in with the walls or backsplash.

Electronics that will likely need a fixed outlet: TV, sound bar, fans, speakers, air purifier, dehumidifier, table and floor lamps, vacuum cleaners.For those with large open spaces, think about going with a two-way switch so you can control the lights from more than a single location. This is useful to minimise foot traffic.Do you need an outlet for charging devices by the sofa?If your TV’s wall-mounted, consider an outlet that is located near to the middle of the wall. If your TV’s positioned atop a console stand, an outlet nearer to the floor will make more sense.A built-in console is a great spot for hiding outlets for media units. Make sure you let your designer know in advance so that he or she can accommodate room for them.Where will you be placing your floor or table lamps? This should be planned out early if you don’t want to see too many cords running across the room. Outlets for floor lamps should be located closer to the floor, while outlets for table lamps should be around side table height.Will the switches of your wall lights be located in the same area as your other light switches? If not, consider how to place your wall light switches at a more discreet location.

Bonus: include a USB outlet for charging phones.Make sure you know the dimensions of your bed and bedside table when locating your outlets. You don’t want to be caught in a situation where you’ll have to shift your nightstand just to charge your phone.If you have a dressing table in the bedroom, have outlets for plugging in appliances that you are likely to use there like your hairdryer, straightener, etc.Consider a dimmer switch for the bedroom so you can adjust the lighting in this space. Warm lights are great for unwinding but if you want to read before bed, a cooler light will be more suitable.Will there be a TV in the bedroom? If so, make sure you account for that.

The height of the bed frame matters, especially for the young, elderly or people with mobility issues. If a taller mattress is desired, then a lower bed frame profile will be needed to balance out comfortably. When necessary, you can also custom order the bed frame at the desired height.

c. Choose the material and built wisely

In general, solid hardwood or metal is the preferred material for a sturdy bed frame. Check the hardware and joinery system that is used to hold and keep the bed frame construction together.
