Decorating with Mirrors

There are many places around your home you can add a mirror. An obvious place is the living area. A large wall mirror with a detailed frame can be just as elegant as an elaborate painting.

Other places include the hallway (along the wall or at the end), the bedroom, along the stairway and the entryway. You can even install a mirror outside on the porch or on a wall adjacent to the garden. The latter is an especially good idea for those with small gardens. The mirror creates a perception that the flowers have spread further than they actually have.

Whatever locations you choose, the secret to decorating with mirrors is positioning and knowing how to mix and match. Make sure the mirror properly captures any light coming in. After all, the beauty of a mirror is coaxed out by light. If there is too little or no natural light hitting the mirror add your own light fixtures. An overhead or wall light directed towards the mirror will create a beautiful effect.

In larger areas such as the living room, hang several mirrors with varying shapes and sizes. Just make sure the mirrors are complementing each other and not competing for attention. For instance, you can have several round mirrors with different sizes. Each can have its own slightly different frame that blends well with the rest.

A mirror combo usually works best when all the pieces are hang on a single wall. This creates a sort of a gallery that becomes the focal area of the room. Try to choose a wall that is directly opposite the windows. This allows the mirrors to reflect more light around and create an even more dazzling style.

Fun & cheerful bath.

You can also set up clever interplay between mirrors and other objects around the house. For example, a large mirror that reflects an art piece opposite it. Or a mirror positioned to reflect the view outside into the house. Or one of those cool mirror TVs where the TV transforms into a mirror when switched off. For maximum effect, get a framed mirror TV.

With decorative wall mirrors, the framing plays an even bigger role in the overall design. As much as you may want different frame styles for different mirrors, stay within a specific theme. Don’t have one mirror with an industrial-style wrought metal frame and another country-style one with a wooden trim. Even for mirrors setup in different rooms, try to work within one theme.

Mirror tiles are becoming increasingly popular. They make for stunning backsplashes (especially when combined with lighting) and are easy to maintain. Mirror tiles are also a common in other areas such as the bathroom. For pizzazz, go for mirror mosaic tiles. These come in a wide variety of patterns that will glam up any room they are used in. You can even create a full accent wall using just mirror mosaic tiles.

Bathroom Mirror Ideas

Bathroom mirrors deliver both functionality and aesthetics.

Functionality

Make sure that the primary bathroom mirror that is usually placed above the sink, is at the right height. Generally, the mirror should be tall enough that the tallest person in the house can easily see their image and low enough that the shortest person can also clearly see themselves. You can also install a full length mirror next to the sink where you can easily see your full image.

Great idea–create a gallery of your favorite mirrors.

esthetics

There are plenty of vanity mirror ideas to borrow from. For instance, you can avoid the traditional rectangular mirrors and get a round vanity mirror installed. If you feel like round is still too traditional, there are many other shapes–heart, wavy, oval and diamond.

One other popular way to add the “cool factor” is to add lighting around the mirror. LED strip lights can turn your mirror into a beautiful focal point around which the rest of the bathroom decor flows. Did you know you can also buy bathroom mirrors that are already fitted with lights?

In addition to the mirror itself, the frame is also a big part of the overall style. Using the framing alone, you can change the look of a vanity mirror. The most common strategy is to add a painted wood trim. A wide white frame gives your mirror a farmhouse or traditional look, black contrasts well with a neutral bathroom décor, bright colors like green and yellow have a warm mid-century feel while softer colors like silver and gray give your mirror a modern style.

One final tip to keep in mind when it comes to bathroom mirrors: bigger is usually better. Big mirrors fill up a space without stifling it. If anything, they add light, airiness and depth.

 Bonus Tips

1. Decide on the Thickness

When buying a mirror, one of the features to check is the thickness. The thicker the mirror, the more expensive it will be.

The thinnest mirrors measure around 2.5mm to 3mm in thickness. Small bathroom and dresser mirrors are often this thin. For bigger vanity and decorative mirrors, the average thickness is between 4mm and 6mm. For much larger decorative mirrors, the glass can be as thick as 9mm. For projects such as a kitchen backsplash or a mirror accent wall, talk with your contractor to figure out the best thickness. For smaller projects, the average 4mm-6mm thickness is good enough.

Also consider the thickness of the framing. Thin frames tend to have a sleek modern look and are better for expanding a room visually. Thicker and wider frames on the other hand cast a homely country feel.

2. Use Mirrors to make the Room Feel Larger

If you have a room that feels small and stuffy, mirrors will come to your rescue. Put one large one on the wall or hang two big ones on opposite walls. The mirrors create the perception of depth and expansiveness. If you have a window in the room, put the mirror opposite it. By reflecting the light coming in, it will create an airier and lighter space.

3. You Don’t Have to Hang it

Yes, you don’t have to hang a mirror. One alternative is to place a full-size framed mirror on the floor and let it lean against the wall. This is especially ideal for bedrooms. Place the mirror at the end of the bed or beside it. You can also position it opposite a piece of art you want reflected back at you.

4. More Mirrors for a Bigger Space

If you have an expansive living room, hang more mirrors to match. They can even be identical, hang in symmetry across the wall. Make sure the mirrors align with something in the room such as the sofa, a dining table or the windows on the opposite wall.

For smaller spaces, be careful not to overwhelm the room with too many or excessively large mirrors. It might fill more like funhouse than a home.

5. Don’t be Afraid to be Unique

Some of the mirror ideas are out of this world–they include unusually shaped mirrors and intricate designs that seem straight out of an engineering workshop. So don’t be afraid to go for the unusual. If it captures your heart and personality unlike anything else you have seen, go for it. If anything, it will provide a conversation starter for guests.

So remember, mirrors are an easy and inexpensive way to add some style to a space.

5 Factors to Consider When Setting up a Cozy Nook

1. How Big Do You Want It?

By their definition, nooks are small spaces. So most of the nook ideas you will come across feature tiny spaces turned into cozy spots. But a nook can also be big and even fill up an entire room. It all depends on what you need.

If you are creating a reading nook for your two kids, you need to make sure it is big enough for both of them. If the space needs to accommodate 3 or more kids, why not turn the attic into a nook where they can play, read and have fun?

If the nook is for you, make sure that you are going to be comfortable in it. Can you stretch your legs when inside? Can you easily get in and out? Otherwise, there is no point creating something that makes you feel cramped and claustrophobic.

The size will also be determined by what you plan to use the nook for. If it is simply for relaxing or reading, a small one will do just fine. If the kids need a place to play with their toys, create something large enough for them to jump and run around. If you are looking for a private space to do your art or work on your book, you’ll need a fairly sizable nook.

2. Where Will it be Located?

Most nooks are small, making it easy to find a place around the house to set one up. One of the most common locations is under the stairs. Depending on how large the space is, you can set up anything from a day bed for reading to a mini-bedroom for daytime naps.

Room corners are also ideal locations. Some dinning nook ideas take advantage of the seclusion offered by room corners. You will also come across small breakfast nook ideas that utilize a single corner to create a restaurant-style breakfast space.  You can set up a corner nook for your kids in their bedroom. Use color and furnishings to separate it from the rest of the room.

DETAILED

Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B

Pretty detail and ample storage around this kitchen nook.

Here are other nook location ideas you can use:

Attic –  The low and sloping roof makes the attic feel warm and comfy. If you need a larger nook, the attic is perfect. You can set up a personal library, a private sleeping space or a kids’ play area. The only downside is that it may require more work and money to renovate.

Basement – If you have a finished basement, you could borrow a small part of it to set up a nook. The corner spaces are especially great. You can use it for work, reading or one of your many hobbies. Another idea is to create a small wet bar where you can enjoy a special beverage after a long day.

Hallway –  Instead of leaving a boring dead end at the end of the hallway, why not set up a cozy space anyone can relax in? Add some warm lighting for those who want to get lost your latest novel.

HIDDEN GEM

Cozy Nook Ideas You’ll Want in Your Home - Sebring Design Build

Sebring Design Build

You almost miss this cute little corner space.   A tranquil area for the kids (or Mom if she’s having a bad day).

Window – A padded bench under the window is the quintessential reading nook. At the very minimum you can simply place a bench under the window and make it your own bookworm nook. For something a bit fancier, you can have a contractor build something more elaborate complete with padding and storage.

Closet – This is another location that is as popular as under the stairs. Because of the small space, closet nooks are usually for one person and are just big enough for reading.

This list could go on and on because there are so many places you could set up a nook. So don’t be limited by our suggestions. These are just the obvious ones. Go around your house and you are sure to find the perfect secluded spot for a cozy nook.   You could have a nook in the kitchen, in the middle of a room and even outside. With a little bit of creativity, your options are endless.

3. Decorating and Furnishings

Decorating and furnishings not only make a nook special and warm, it also makes it practical for whatever activities you are planning.

You don’t have to do a full renovation when decorating a nook. Often a new coat of paint will do. We recommend a color that stands out from the rest of the room while still creating a cozy and relaxing atmosphere.

As for furnishings, what you need depends on what you plan to use the nook for. If it is reading, make sure you have something comfortable to lie back on. Consider throwing in a few pillows for maximum coziness.  A small bookshelf would also come in handy. If you have the space, you can hang a few pictures. If it is a play area for kids, add some storage for the toys. If it is a work area, a comfortable desk and lighting are essential.

4. Lighting

Don’t forget this crucial aspect when setting up a nook. Whether it is for reading, playing or eating, lighting is essential not just for illumination but also for setting the nook apart in terms of style and décor.  The type of lighting you use–overhead, wall or floor lamp; will depend on the unique architecture of your nook.

In some locations such as under the stairs, a recessed overhead lamp is great. If you have a bench under the window, a portable floor lamp will be handy when you want to read at night. For locations such as the attic or end of the hallway, you can take advantage of the space and use multiple lighting styles.

5. Not Just For Humans

You don’t have to fit into a nook for it to be a legit nook. Sometimes you can create a nook to house an art piece, a picture or a vase. These types of nooks are usually created out of recessed wall spaces and are mostly for decorative effects.

You can also create a larger nook for your pet. For instance, you can set up a cozy sleeping space at the corner next to the radiator for your pup. For your cat, a raised sleeping nook would be heaven.

Small spaces are not always the picture of comfort. But a well-designed cozy nook is a relaxing escape from the hustle of bigger spaces. For kids, it is a fun place to enjoy a book and make great childhood memories.

The best part is that creating a nook is not a big investment of your time, money or effort.   Consider setting one up this weekend!

Diameter of the Range Hood Ductwork

One of the most important factors to consider while selecting a range hood is the diameter of your ductwork. This diameter will need to fit your unique kitchen installation needs. In most cases, the diameter of the ductwork is usually around 4 inches, and this implies that this diameter is considered ideal for typical installation tasks. Be that as it may, you can go for a diameter that is slightly smaller than the recommended 4 inches depending on the exact installation needs of your kitchen.

There are several recommendations for the diameter of a range hood, and these recommendations are meant to enable you to have a rough idea in terms of what should be the appropriate diameter for your ductwork. The ultimate diameter should be determined by the size of your vent hood CFM.

Length of the Ductwork

In addition to the diameter of the ductwork, another important aspect that you should consider when it comes to selecting the perfect range hood for your kitchen is the length of the ductwork. The overall length of the ductwork will to a large extent determine how effective the installation will be at getting rid of exhaust gases from the kitchen.

There are several general guidelines that should guide you on the length of your metal or wood range hoods.  First one being that shorter ductwork is better longer. This is because shorter ductwork is more effective when it comes to getting rid of exhaust gases from the kitchen. Second, straight ductwork is recommended.

Type of Wood or Metal Used

An important thing to consider when it comes to selecting the best metal or wood range hoods is the type of material used in the overall construction of the structure. It is important to ensure that the material is indeed appealing enough since it is the most visible aspect of the installation. When it comes to wood range hoods, the best wood types to use include hard maple, red oak or cherry. These materials feature a classy look when subjected to the right finish, thus serving to enhance the aesthetic appeal of your kitchen area.

When it comes to metal range hoods, you might consider using appropriate metal types such as the zinc range hoods that are quite popular in the market. Furthermore, the overall appearance of your range hood can be enhanced by the color of the finish you choose to apply on the wooden or metallic surface.
